Abstract:
Gender inequality has specific causes in each country. In today's Georgia, this is primarily due to the low level of Georgian political culture, the extremely polarized political environment, and public distrust of political parties based largely on the "language of hate" and not on ideological competition. Achieving gender equality at all levels of government is a matter of democracy and human rights protection. Making the most of a country's talent and expertise has a beneficial impact on development, economic prosperity, and security. Expanding and refining the quota policy is important for

Innovation has been shown to be a key factor in determining a country’s competitiveness and economic growth potential. Through investments in education and research and development, many developing countries have tried to avoid the “middle income trap” of stagnation by working to create high-value employment opportunities. To better understand country-level readiness to innovate, we have compiled a set of publicly available data indicators and created a data tool to illustrate innovation capabilities and infrastructure by country. Our approach builds on and advances existing national innovatio

Uzbekistan has aimed to attain high-income country status by 2030 which implies that institutional reforms, innovation, macroeconomic stability, and regional development are among key priorities. Therefore, fostering the economic complexity of produced goods and services may become one of the benchmarks to assess the quality of economic growth. Countries with increased economic complexity index are associated with higher GDP per capita and life satisfaction indices at the country level.

The advent of Big Data and computational tools has transformed macroeconomic analysis, introducing real-time, high-frequency text-based indicators such as the economic policy uncertainty (EPU) index pioneered by Baker et al. (2016). However, constructing the EPU index for developing economies remains a challenge, mostly due to limited press coverage. Our study focuses on the Central American region, comprising Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic (CAPADR). We construct country-specific EPU indices using a combination of local and regional s

This paper examines the economic effects of employment protection legislation in a sample of developed and developing countries. Implementing a difference-in-differences test lessens the potentially severe endogeneity and omitted variable problems associated with cross-country regressions. This test is based on the hypothesis that employment protection regulations are more binding in sectors of activity exposed to higher volatility in demand or supply shocks. The analysis indicates that more stringent legislation slows down job turnover by a significant amount, and that this effect is more pro

This Country Program Evaluation (RE-365) covers the period 2003-2008, which was marked by the consequences of Jamaica's financial crisis which had erupted in 1995. During the crisis, the Bank remained the major multilateral partner engaged in the country. However, it underestimated the impact of the crisis, which left a legacy of debt overhang that continues to dominate and constrain the country's performance. Specifically, the Bank failed to recognize until quite late that the need to meet debt payments would require strong adjustment measures, undermining the public investment program. In li

Economic Freedom of North America measures the extent to which the policies of individual provinces and states are supportive of economic freedom—the ability of individuals to act in the economic sphere free of undue restrictions. It includes a subnational index for comparison of individual jurisdictions (provincial/state and municipal/local governments) within the same country, and an all-government index for comparison of jurisdictions (federal governments) in different countries.
