Experts project that if current trends continue, one of every three U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050. Abstract:
Human activity is causing rapid loss of biodiversity. Although the direct drivers of this are well understood, the indirect socio-economic drivers are not. This thesis examines the role of economic inequality in predicting rates of biodiversity loss at two different scales. First, I perform a cross-national analysis of the proportion of plant and vertebrate species that are threatened, as defined by the IUCN (World Conservation Union) red lists. Second, I examine the role of land cover and socio- economic variables in determining trends in bird species richness in the USA. At

The purpose of this thesis is to disentangle the causes behind differences in regional employment across the 81 Swedish LA regions. Thus, two questions will be answered; which factors causes regional disparity in employment and which where the least and the

most affected regions during the economic crises of the 1990’s? The answer to these questions are imposed by certain chosen restrictions, where only the situation within two manufacturing industries will be investigated; the car- and machine manufacturing sectors. Economics
Ph.D.
This dissertation makes a contribution to the question of how best to set the rate of unemployment compensation. Previous research on this topic has emphasized the behavioral response of non-workers to various incentives created by unemployment insurance. Recent work has emphasized two new features. One is the importance of including savings in the model, and the other the recognition that skills tend to rise during employment and fall during unemployment spells. This thesis seeks to combine all three features, search incentives, savings, and skill change effects. The str

The purpose of this thesis is to accurately identify residents of a boomtown who are either experiencing a higher level of well-being, or lower level of well-being. By definition, we consider the former to be winning, and the latter to be losing. Multivariate ordinary least squares regression analyses help to distinguish between winners and losers by generating statistical coefficients which will show both strength and direction of the relationship between individuals and various indicators of social well-being. The data used in this thesis are from a community impact study issued in the spr

Continuous improvement of various processes within a company is a necessity to remain competitive on the market. There are many different improvement methodologies to streamline work routines; however the different methodologies do not sufficiently embrace administrative processes or the employee motivation regarding changes. The purpose of this thesis has been to develop a model for streamlining administrative processes, while maintaining the employee motivation during the improvement projects implementation phases. The model has been developed theoretically through literature reviews includi
