Abstract:
This study aimed to explore the model that can be used to improve local community participation in ecotourism development processes. The study was conducted at the communities adjoining the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A mixed methods design was adopted by the study during collection and analysis of data. A total of 384 respondents were sampled through convenience sampling technique. Questionnaires were used to collect data through face-to-face surveys. The study found that local communities had not been actively participating in ecotourism development processes, especially those undertaken within the rural setting as a result of different socio-economic factors including lacking necessary skills. This study asserts that this gap could be mitigated through implementation of local community participation improvement model (LCPIM) based on its potential for influencing enactment and/or amendment of policies on ecotourism development

Abstract:
Ecotourism is sustainable tourism, which is based on the ecological principle and sustainable development theory. There is emergent need of capacity building for local people for ecotourism in the villages of Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP). Ecotourism involves local community for the conservation of the area’s ecology and biodiversity, in return, provides economic incentives to the community. This paper studies the ecotourism perspective from the point of view of major stakeholders of ecotourism, i.e., local communities, tourists, ecotourism operators, and government officials in Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) of Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh. This study determines the various issues related to ecotourism and these stakeholders’ opinions about these issues. A lack of knowledge and awareness exists in the local community about ecotourism and its benefits, while the other stakeholders have strong opinions for various ecotourism statements. An ANOVA test is conducted followed by a Scheffe test to the different groups of stakeholders. The paper gives some suggestions to increase ecotourism awareness, capacity building for ecotourism for the local community, and community participation for the development of ecotourism in GHNP.

Abstract:
Ecotourism has a high potential impact on remote communities, by improving economic opportunity and natural resources conservation, and is increasingly accepted as an alternative livelihood for rural people. This study examines ecotourism development from the perspective of participation and economic impact for the Bousra people in Cambodia. A total of 237 households were selected as the sample size. Data collection was carried out with face-to-face interviews and analyzed using logistic regression and ordinary least square methods. Results revealed that local households depend mostly on agriculture (i.e., crop plantation and farming) and utilize ecotourism as a secondary source of income. Most households acknowledged ecotourism had a positive impact on environmental, social, and economic perspectives, while some signaled negative backlash due to depleted natural resources and impact on local culture. Household participation in ecotourism was not significantly affected from assistance issued by government or non-governmental organizations. However, causal relationships were found based on household demographic factors, attitude to environmental conservation, and village life. It was shown that the percentage of people involvement in ecotourism is high, but their income percentage is low due to education, skill, and capacity to expand. As a low-impact alternative to standard commercial tourism, community-based ecotourism has potential in becoming a transformative form of economics for local communities.

Abstract:
This study aims to: (1) analyze the level of community participation in the development of ecotourism referrals; (2) analyze what factors are related to the level of community participation in the development of referred ecotourism; (3) analyze what strategies can be applied to increase community participation in the development of ecotourism referrals. The research method used in this research is descriptive method. The research was conducted in Kerujuk Hamlet, Mengala Village which was selected by purposive sampling with the consideration that the hamlet has an ecotourism program that involves the community. The determination of the number of respondents was determined by proportionate stratified random sampling using the Slovin formula and the number of respondents was determined to be 43 respondents. The collected data was then analyzed using a scoring system, Spearman rank correlation test analysis and SWOT analysis. The results showed that the level of community participation was included in the low category because community involvement was still lacking in all stages of activities carried out in an effort to develop ecotourism referrals. Factors related to the level of community participation are non-formal education (skills), income, length of stay and age. The strategy that can be applied in an effort to increase community participation is the WO strategy or weakness-opportunity, where cooperative efforts with the government or educational institutions are carried out to improve the quality of human resources to be more independent in managing creative and innovative referral ecotourism.

Abstract:
Community and tourists are two inseparable stakeholders that are complementary to each other in many respects in the development of ecotourism destinations. The assessment of perceptions of community and tourists on ecotourism development in the protected areas is a baseline on which ecotourism potential of the park is completely dependent. It is proved in many cases that there is a better understanding between community and tourists in the conservation of protected areas through the development of ecotourism. This paper explores how theecotourism project has brought about considerable changes in the perceptions of community and tourists. The data collected from the residents of buffer area of the park show a positive response towards the promotion of eco friendly tourism in Similpal National Park. Similarly, the results of the analysis of the perceptions of tourists demonstrate a huge responsibility to the conservation of flora and fauna and sustainability of the ecotourism attractions. The outcomes of the research will have immense impact on the park authority to involve the community in all decision making process of ecotourism project in the future. The findings of the paper have practical relevance for park authority and tour operators that are trying to develop low impact tourism or responsible tourism. This research will lay foundation for future research work on the ecotourism in the protected areas.

Abstract:
The sustainability of ecotourism initiatives represents a major challenge. The aim of this study is to enhance our understanding of how community participation in ecotourism management can contribute toward achieving more sustainable results by identifying key factors that make it possible to potentiate a broader range of economic, social and environmental objectives. Based on the theory of collaborative planning and the strategic focus of community tourism, our work adopted a mixed approach to compare and explain the differences between two local cooperatives on the coast of the state of Nayarit, Mexico. The results reveal statistically‑significant differences between the benefits obtained through ecotourism and identify the factors that foment active community participation by local residents that, in turn, generates positive correlations with those benefits. Findings were supported by qualitative interviews with external informants. Our conclusion is that the level of benefits obtained can be reasonably explained by a set of six key factors

AbstractThis study assessed the level of community awareness and participation in ecotourism in Old Oyo National Park, Nigeria. Data were collected in communities located in four ranges (i.e. administrative and protection zones) of Old Oyo National Park, Oyo State, Southwest Nigeria. The ranges are Tede, Marguba, Sepeteri, and Oyo-Ile. Seven (7) communities out of 27 that are in Tede range were selected, eight (8) were selected from 12 communities in Marguba range, eight (8) were selected from 17 communities in Sepeteri range while eight (8) were selected from 30 communities in Oyo Ile range. The study was a questionnaire survey involving 150 respondents that were randomly selected from communities in the four (4) ranges of the Park. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey’s HSD, t-test and logistic regression. Results revealed that 48% of the respondents were aware of ecotourism while 52% were not. Also, 46% participated in ecotourism while 54% did not participate. A relationship exists between ecotourism awareness and participation (p<0.01). Community type (p<0.01) was the only predictor of community awareness of ecotourism while community type (p<0.01) and awareness (p<0.01) were the predictors of participation in ecotourism in the park. Awareness, active involvement of communities in stakeholder meetings, decision-making and provision of start-up capital are important for ecotourism development in the park.

Abstract:
Travel and tourism have become a fast-growing industry and a major source of income for many developing countries (Wood, 2002), including Indonesia. Approximately 35% of major nature tourism product portfolio is ecotourism (Kementerian Pariwisata dan Ekonomi Kreatif, 2019). Ecotourism development is based on the awareness of understanding in every environment condition which oriented in conservation and concern of the local culture as well as local civilization. Hence, the existence of community interaction is a guarantee to the sustainability of ecotourism development (Damanik, 2013; Wood, 2002). Many benefits offered by the concept of ecotourism, does not keep this concept away from several critics, related to the low of local community involvement in ecotourism management. This study aims to analyze the local community involvement as well as the affecting factors in managing the ecotourism in Indonesia by systematically reviewing 29 articles published in Sinta Ristekdikti’s accredited journals with the qualifications of Sinta 1 and Sinta 2. The discussion about local community involvement will be reviewed from the ecotourism planning level, participation in ecotourism development implementation and participation in its use (Lukman, 2017). Meanwhile, the affecting factors will be analyzed from the operational, structural and cultural perspective. The results show that the involvement of local communities in ecotourism management in Indonesia is still limited to the level of utilization. From the operational perspective, limits to local community involvement are come from limited information availability about ecotourism to local communities, centralized tourism management and the lack of coordination among stakeholders. Limited number of trained human resources, legal system that does not support the participatory practices, the uncooperative attitude of professionals and the dominance of local elite are still become the limitations to local community involvement from a structural perspective. Meanwhile, cultural barriers include apathy and a low level of public awareness of the potential benefit of ecotourism in their area. We can conclude that the empowerment efforts to local community in ecotourism destinations must be further improved. Educating the local community to understand their rights, informing them about the ecotourism management in their area would be the right first step to execute, because due to the lack of knowledge and information they have, frequently triggers disturbances from the local community which actually will thwart the ecotourism purposes.

Abstract:
Ecotourism is a type of sustainable tourism that aims at conservation of the environment through maintaining a balance between conservation and empowerment of local residents. However, for developing countries like India, proper implementation of ecotourism is questionable. The present study has selected Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary (BKWS), Odisha, India, which is the second largest mangrove ecosystem in India. An attempt is made to examine how far ecotourism has been successful in empowering the locals socially, culturally, and psychologically through their involvement in different organizations and its implications in achieving the conservation goals. Both primary and secondary data were used in the study. The study uses a variety of econometric techniques and case studies for finding the results. The study finds that with the creation of employment opportunities locals also have been made aware for participation in community development programs, including ecodevelopment clubs and self-help groups. However, these organizations have failed to empower the communities. Although some positive attitudes have come in discussions, the results mostly indicate that ecotourism certainly has not met the principles of empowerment. Organizational participation has therefore not been successful for the reduction of dependence on natural resources in Bhitarkanika. The support of the locals is highly essential for successful conservation policy. Thus, proper strategies need to be designed for an inclusive ecotourism approach in BKWS and beyond, one that is socially effective, psychologically and politically empowered, culturally progressive, and environmentally sustainable.

Abstract:
Abstract. In some societies, studies involving blood draws, oral vaccinations, or supplementation are surrounded by myths and disbeliefs. If not clarified, they may affect study implementation and negatively impact the outcome of well-intended studies from inadequate participation. Through participatory action research, this paper suggests how future trials could be enhanced with reference to community mobilization, drawing from the experience of two interventions in Zambian children with nutritionally enhanced, biofortified orange maize conducted by the National Food and Nutrition Commission and Tropical Diseases Research Center (Zambia), and University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA). The preparatory phase included site visits, signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, equipment inventory, hiring staff, and community meetings. Prior results were shared before the second intervention. After Institutional Review Boards’ approval of procedures, written informed consent was obtained from caregivers. There was overwhelming community participation attributed to the demystification that the project was run by satanists prior to and during the study. Participation led to excellent compliance with 92.8 and 96.4% of subjects completing the final blood draw in 2010 and 2012, respectively. The results of the trials were successfully shared with the district officials and communities from where the study participants were drawn. The positive response by partners and communities, including information sharing, suggests that community mobilization, with the use of varied methods, is effective for full participation of the target groups in feeding trials and would be the case in similar trials if effectively carried out. Community participation in research studies may result in long-term adoption of biofortified foods.

Abstract:
Many stakeholders believe that developing community-based ecotourism (CBET) in vulnerable nature reserves is an effective method of ensuring greater conservation of natural and cultural resources, empowering host communities, and improving their socio-economic well-being. This paper assesses the current status of the CBET development in the Aksu-Jabagly nature reserve (NR), located in the south part of Kazakhstan. In order to understand ecotourism development status, 222 representative households from two neighboring communities of Aksu-Jabagly NR were surveyed with 5-point Likert scale questions. At the same time, two tourism relevant experts were interviewed. The results of examining the three indicators (community tourism relevance, community participation rank, and community empowerment), showed that the neighboring community relevance with the tourism in AksuJabagly NR was low, the community residents' participation rank in tourism was also at the lower level, and the community’s empowerment status is not ideal. As a result, we initially asserted that the status of CBET development in Aksu-Jabagly NR is not well, in particular, the positive economic and social impact of tourism development is not so obvious.

This study inspects on the potential of mangrove ecotourism and its management efforts in a conservation zone based on the subtleties and status of ecosystem impairment. It is receded that the mangrove forest ecosystem is currently undergoing pressures that affect the shrinkage of mangrove area. Mangrove conservation can be carried by promoting conservation activities and community participation. To achieve these tasks, there are requirements to support from the government of Surabaya City in preparing the facilities, provide means and infrastructure, empower the surrounding community as well as what more important is to promote the region as an alternative tourist destination.

Abstract:
The movement of the public sector in development has become important in relation to the governance agenda (Pomerantz in Bevir,2011;164) . Development failures in many developing countries are due to the presence of insignificant community participation in poverty alleviation (Grindle,2004;526). Surabaya is an example of a city that is trying to continue to empower its people through various activities under Dinas Pertanian dan Ketahanan Pangan. The potential of coastal areas that are rich in mangroves in Surabaya along the East Coast of Surabaya (Pamurbaya) is the choice to empower the community with mangrove ecotourism designn. Theoretically the phenomenon of empowerment in the view of researchers is interesting to study. Considering even though there have been many empowerment programs implemented in Pamurbaya. The existing program has not been able to fully complete community capacity development. Active community participation was also still limited and the achievement of prosperity that needs to be improved.

Abstract:
Community participation in conservation activities is an important mechanism to coordinate the conflicts between conservation and local development. Hence, it is necessary to understand farmers’ preferences for different conservation and development policies. By surveying households residing inside and outside the four giant panda nature reserves in the Qinling Mountains, China, in 2018, this study uses a choice experiment model to evaluate participation willingness and stated preferences regarding the establishment of national parks (NPs), ecotourism development, ecological public welfare forest compensation, and provision of ecological jobs. Our results suggest that these conservation and development policies all have a positive impact on community participation in conservation. Among the different conservation and development policies, farmers seem to prefer the government developing ecotourism most, followed by providing ecological jobs, establishing NPs, and finally the compensation amount and period of ecological public welfare forests. Moreover, farmers with different characteristics have different preferences regarding conservation and development policies. Age, education level, whether the respondent is a village cadre, family forestland area, family income, and whether the respondent lives in a nature reserve are relevant socio-economic characteristics of the affected farmers.

Abstract:
Thekelan Village, Kopeng District has a special potency of ecotourism. Thekelan Village is located at an altitude of + 2000 masl with magnificent scenery and surrounded by protected forest areas. The social characteristics of the community are homogeneous, distinctive, and strong highland culture. Thekelan Village has annually received visits from universities and schools for both comparative study and live-in programs. However, the sustainability of the tourism needed to be evaluated since the community has not participated much in the tourism activity (just lodging and communication). Indicators were established to evaluate the sustainability of existing tourism in Thekelan Village. Moreover, a survey, in-depth interview, and focus group discussion have been conducted to the community to assess the readiness to develop sustainable ecotourism. The results showed that the existing tourism has failed to be sustainable. Nevertheless, the community are ready to implement a new program to improve the management of community participation in the rural tourism setting. Therefore, a sustainable ecotourism can be developed and bring more economic benefits to the local people.

Abstract:
This study aims to (1) describe the model development of Giyanti village’s traditional cultural heritage, and (2) how it elaborates the community and the government in developing the ecotourism of Giyanti Hamlet. This research is a qualitative research. Methods of the data collection in the field is by using observation techniques, interviews, and documentation. The collected data were then analyzed by describing the results of the study in detail and systematic. Then, the results are presented informally, namely the formulation with ordinary words in the form of narrative texts. In this study, it is argued that the development of culture towards the ecotourism of the Giyanti village was wrapped in the Community Based Tourism model, which was able to elevate the culture, social, economy of the local community. However, full participation from the community is not enough if there is no good colaboration with the government. Therefore, there must be a good colaboration between the community and the government as the organizer of the ecotourism in the village of Giyanti, Wonosobo Regency.

Abstract:
The Nariva Swamp on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean is being degraded due to increasing human activity. However, its conservation is desirable, as it is an internationally recognized wetland. The study examined an ecotourism project, with an emphasis on community participation, as a conservation approach to the Swamp, via benefit–cost analysis, where the benefits of conservation were measured by contingent valuation. Contingent valuation showed that the residents of Trinidad were willing to pay an average of $56 for conserving the Swamp. The analysis also showed that ecotourism represents an economically feasible use of ecologically fragile resources of this wetland.
