Eco•In•D, the Ecological Innovation Demonstration, is the title of the Indianapolis Urban Ecovillage designed in this project. There is a growing need to reevaluate how humans live on this planet and determine an alternative, wherein consumption does not exceed available resources and detrimental impact on the environment is minimized or negated. The project considers the intentional community model as well as the concepts of urban sustainability and permaculture to drive the development of the built environment, enabling the planet's ability to absorb the impact of the escalating human popula

Abstract:
The challenge of facilitating a shift towards sustainable housing, food and mobility has been taken up by diverse community-based initiatives ranging from "top-down" approaches in low-carbon municipalities to "bottom-up" approaches in intentional communities. This paper compares intervention measures in four case study areas belonging to these two types, focusing on their potential of re-configuring daily housing, food, and mobility practices. Taking up critics on dominant intervention framings of diffusing low-carbon technical innovations and changing individual behavior, we draw on soc

Reimagining Art and the Ecovillage develops an expanded understanding of art and the way it functions in the ecovillage within the broader context of the environmental, sustainability movement. Although art plays a vital role, there is little extant research in this field, a shortcoming that this thesis addresses. My overarching question asks whether the ecovillage can be reimagined as a work of art, not in terms of what a work of art is but, drawing on the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari, what is enabled by an expanded conception of art. As early as 1987, the Brundtland Commission, in its report “Our Common Future,” already suggested that we would need to come up with a different way of living our life which allowed a sustainable environmental development. Beginning in the 1990s, western nations started to examine the consequences of living an unsustainable life and proposed the idea of Eco-village, where a community would live harmoniously with nature. Humans in the rich nations must consume fewer resources if we are to achieve environmental sustainability. This thesis examines a group of people who have chosen to create an intentional ecovillage community in order to lower their resource use and live simply. By understanding why the members of this ecovillage have chosen to pursue the ecovillage lifestyle we can understand how to encourage others to partake in similar environmental actions.
