Full textAfter having identified the use of the masculine gender in the French language and the use of the word "man" as "a tool of disinformation", I conducted a research-action, during 10 years, within an optic of journalistic ethics, on the means used in the French language to inform about women as well as men, which led me to adopt a graphic mark (·) the single median dot, named 'dot of otherness' for its potential recognition of human diversity, so as to signify a common gender identification. This research’s review and its continuation within information and communication sciences have enabled me to develop functional linguistic and classical grammar analytical procedures within the scope of what I define as «francography». I used the analysis of a Tisséo poster (Toulouse public transportation) as a methodological matrix, to develop and display parity measures using the notions of feminine / masculine / outbound genre, arbitrary / semantically motivated and apparent / non apparent gender (read the above examples in French language). Finally didactical proposals are presented as a new way of "transmutation of values"

Full textThis work consists in studying the linguistic defreezing phenomenon. We establish three typologies of studying cases chosen from the French satirical weekly newspaper "Le Canard enchaîné". The typologies are made in three parts. The first typology is of structuralism, the second one consists in classifying the defreezing cases by transformations, the last one is a typology of three primary functions of predication. In doing so, we propose different linguistic approaches in treating the problematical defreezing phenomenon, which causes problems in teaching, comprehension and computational linguistic treatment in French

Full textIn the mid-eighteenth century, Sicily became a new destination for European travelers. Witnessing the changes in the traditional European Grand Tour and the social and cultural upheavals of the continent, the travelogues in Sicily help to crystallize the perception of identities from the Self and the Other. The representations of ancient and modern Sicily expressed among the travelers of the eighteenth century will profoundly mark the collective imagination. In search of new viaticus experiences, remnants of ancient Sicily, on the one hand insular exoticism that fascinates readers since the "discovery" of the Pacific Islands andthe Indian Ocean, travelers will also be confronted with the destabilizing experience of the unknown and displacement. Giving meaning to the Sicilian otherness that expresses it selfbefore their eyes then becomes a necessity. And the use of theories of the time and stereotypes then allows to build a portrait of Sicily that reflects as much the representation of the Other Sicilian, as the travelers themselves. The historical and cultural heritage of Sicily makes it a destination in its own right. Taken by the attempts to share large geographical and cultural groups between the East and the West, of which Sicily, neither quite nor quite the other, seems on the contrary, to form this point of junction in the heart of the Mediterranean. Keywords : travel books, Sicily, representations, identities

Full textThrough the analysis of eroticism and the way it is used in short tales authored by women of Central America, this thesis demonstrates the significance of the study of the erotic discourse as well as its evolution and the latest trends. In the first chapter- the introduction- we briefly explain the social and historical context of Cen-tral America, in order to draw attention to an area still unknown at the current time. Afterwards, we will intro-duce our method of analysis, the objectives and the consulted sources. In the second chapter we submit a chronology of eroticism in literature which starts by The Song of Songs and finishes by a debate about Gender Studies and the Queer Theory. It is crucial to observe the evolution of eroticism as well as its significance

Full textThe constitutional status of women is a new question, which became interesting since the second half of the XXth century. The militancy of a few women permitted them to reach important positions in the public and civil life, and to get certain autonomy in private relationships and in their families. These successes, even if they were relative and limited, constituted the first step to the awareness that women could reach and obtain equality with men. France and United States don't give the same importance to the concept of Equality, America choose Common Law, France uses a system based on Civil Law, and the two States have opposite models for their constitutional justice system. All these differences invited us to study Equality in a comparative and abstract approach, so that we could show that the french and american constitutional notions, interpretations and methods are noticeably different (First part). But, and it is probably the " application paradox ", the concrete, pragmatic and thematic study of women's position in politics, administrations, work relations and family law, shows a real convergence of the solutions in France and United States. Sexual Equality, even if it is not achieved, is really advancing in a similar way in the two States. This research also includes a bibliography and an alphabetical index of contents

Full textThe field of imagology is defined by comparatists as a frontier domain, somewhere in between comparative literature, history and ethnopsychology. We have approached the subject matter from an imagological perspective in order to describe the image formation stages of the Romanians in several French writings in the 18th and 19th century. These stages are marked by several reference texts along the history of the French-Romanian relations, we mention here the first great work on the Moldo-Vlachs by Jean-Louis Carra, following Stanislas Bellanger’ book to Abdolonyme Ubicini’s writings, without forgetting those of various French consuls or historians, friends of the Romanians.Romania has not come into being within a single day. The French people’s image on the Romanians crystallized along the 19th century. True, in the 13th century French military men and merchants arrived in the lands inhabited by the ancestors of the Romanians. But the attraction of the Orient, cultivated especially in the 18th and 19th century, as well as the apprehension exerted in Europe by the Ottoman and Russian Empires determined more and more adventurers, revolutionaries, exiles, politicians and soldiers to travel towards Eastern Europe. Even if they were written during a stay in the Romanian countries, at first, the French writings about the Romanians bear the influence/ mark of the Moldo-Vlach chronicles and earlier texts. As transport is getting better and the keroutza is replaced by train or ship along the Danube, later works become increasingly personal without disregarding previous writings. We have demonstrated that this resuming of the same fragments of images referring to recurring domains (history, habits, dwellings, morals, organization, natural resources, landscape and ethnic groups) resulted into composing an image which is far from the touch of the negative cliché. The scriptural records about Romanians in the 19th century would prepare the ground for the foundation of the Romanian nation. This point coincides with the appearance in the official texts of the words Romanian, Romania, everything preparing the ground for the great France-Romania friendship. We are mainly interested in the period when the writings are scarce, as compared with the French books appearing in the 20th century. The study of these writings constitutes in the analysis of various documents, historical essays, memoirs, travel narratives and embassy reports. This analysis operates with concepts of image (meaning representation), stereotype, ethnotype in the terms of perceiving the Other with everything Alterity has characteristic. The finale image is appearing of recurrence of the same elements which the authors insist on (stereotypes)

Full textThe object of research is, on the one hand, to identify didactic obstacles faced by the actors on the educational stage in an eighth grade class in teaching (learning to produce and assess a narrative including a descriptive and meaningful sequence as well as a substantial dialogue in French as a Second Language in Burkina Faso), and on the other, to provide them with ways of remediation. From a field test that was based mainly on an analysis of written products schemed around an analysis of professional practices, difficulties have been noted not only in the learners but also in the teachers; difficulties faced by students are mainly linguistic and conversational. Those faced by teachers arose in a didactic sequence requiring students to produce a narrative including description and dialogue. It appears that these didactic issues are due on the one hand to the fact that teachers do not assess the linguistic needs of their students enough and as a result do not allot enough time to practicing the production of written material; on the other hand, they give little attention to differentiated instruction and didactic assessment. There have been suggestions for better equipment. Among them we have the training of teachers in teaching writing and their equipment with appropriate teaching resources. An example of a didactic sequence has also been provided

Full textThis thesis studies the image of the marriage and of the woman offered by the literature of the middle of the nineteenth century. In a first time, the analysis of the preparation of the girls for the marriage is linked to the image given by this institution, very debated since the previous century. This study permites to specify the role of the parents and to define the feminine education. The type of the ideal fiancee proposed by the literature helps us to precize the dobble sexual moral established from the middle of the century. The analysis of the impact of the literary movement about the image of the woman and of the marriage shows us the limited influence of romantism and the conformity of the first "realistic" novel. In a second time, the analysis of the marriage and of the role of the woman, displays the genesis of the myth of "the angel of the family", in the middle of the nineteenth century, under the influence of the church and of the ideology of the middle-class. The woman, enclosed in her domestic role as a wife and a mother, gains a social mission and a redemptive role, linked to a sacred vision of the family and the marriage. The leetingness of the feminist desire expresed by a generation of women writers in the fourteenth's, conweys the domination of the traditionalist ideology of the middle-class. In brief, from the second part of the century, the woman is relegated to the private life, and this event constitutes a retreat in relation to the enlightenment

Full textThe actual sociological data let appear an ageing of the population and an increasing augmentation of the divorces. The result of that is a very great number of single women. That's why we have thought it would be interesting, through the law does not make any difference between men and women, to study the patrimonial comparative situation of the widows, divorced or legal separated women in french law. That sudy has been led concerning, on the one hand, the civil law (ist part), on the other hand, the social and fiscal legislation (2nd part). In the sight of the civil law, the following themes have been taken up : protection of the familial housing, professionnal activity of the women, the ressources and the goods of the woman. In the sight of the social law, a careful study of the actual social protection of the single woman has been realized in the scope of the general and "specific" laws. In the sight of the fiscal law, a double aspect of the imposition has been considered : incometax and imposition on the capital. A comparative balance is made at the end of the study of each of these themes
Elmaleh, Cazes Victoria. "La femme entre le monde et le retrait du monde : l'attitude de Jérôme et d'Augustin." Paris 2, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1992PA020021.
Full textFathers of the church but men moving in their times, jerom and augustin have dualist conception about woman: equivalent to men by her soul, she is submited to their authority owing to the posteriority of her body's formation, the originel sin, the influence of the old testament, roman laws and morals. However, they give her an office and a promotion inside the christian church if she adheres to their ideal of chastity. Classifed in an ascending order, married women, widows, virgins create the christian feminine elite with whom monastics are closely associated. If they build up more a theology about marriage than rules of law they give, in the other hand, many advices for lack of laws again about virginity, widowhood and feminine monachism. The strength of their exhortations prove of the reserve of laic society strongly yet impregnated by paganism but also they give a clear indication of solicitude with regard to them

Full textThe rights granted to the wife are not equal in all the laws that organize the conjugal relationship. Some laws, having distinguished between the rights and the duties of the spouses, have made today equal rights and duties, and this in some developed countries such as France whose Civil Code no longer uses the terms wife and husband to distinguish between the married woman and the married man ; this point sign the equality between the spouses. In Third World countries, such as some Arab countries including Libya, the distinction between wife and husband in respect of rights and duties remains applicable on the ground that Libya, in particular, applies Islamic law in personal status issues. In Islamic countries, the fact of distinguishing between the spouses gives the wife rights that France does not confer on her, such as the dowry, the right to the expense, the exclusive right of custody of the child after the marriage. The right to a salary from this care and another salary related to breastfeeding and also the right not to be deprived of the inheritance of her husband in all cases. These rights which constitute the theme of our research do not exist in French law for the sole reason that they do not comply with the principle of equality between the spouses, considered principle of public order in the said law. These rights also proved that the inequality between spouses applied in Islamic law and Libyan law is not an advantage for the husband and a black spot for the wife, but on the contrary that this inequality can cover all the needs of the wife to the detriment of her husband regardless of the financial status of both spouses

Full textThis thesis deals with the expression of a mystique lacking in the presence of God, in the French works of Cioran. The spiritual experience is considered from the works of some Christian mystics. Lucidity leads Cioran to the experience of emptiness. And yet, self-disgust never overcomes a tenacious passion for being, which is the sign of the nostalgia for Unity. It seems to be a perpetual conversion. As he's about to give in to a fearsome nihilism, the mystic way opens up for Cioran. The question is how this experience doesn't lapse into a syncretic mysticism. Cioran considers the ontological question from the Christian anthropology point of view. By expecting a confrontation with God, this experience is more than an anxious introspection. The mystique exceeds the psychology area and concerns epistemology as well. The mystique is the evidence of the limits of philosophy and metaphysic and goes on by means of the act of writing, grappling with the temptation of silence

Full textJ. -P. Manchette postulated that the pioneering American writers of the "Série noire" focused on social criticism, and created a style that speaks to cinema. In the 1970's, he describes sensational actions that deliberately leave his caracter's intentions ambiguous. He inspired C. Chabrol, J. Deray, Y. Boisset, J. Bral and A. Delon. What these directors overlook in his work, however, is his denunciation of the social crisis facing France after 1968. In his critique of leftist politics, Manchette refuses militancy and terrorism. Although he claims that literature loses its purpose when stripped of political engagement, his male characters look like neurotic individuals affected by imported American culture. By announcing the feminist movement, he palliates a writing of disillusionment, and in fact reinvents the roman noir. Manchette reveals, then, the "impossible" or unyielding nature of literature, wich constantly regenerates itself through the very attempt by authors to go beyond it

Full textThe present PhD thesis in the field of Information and Communication Sciences analyzes media representations of foreign women in contemporary France. It entails communication, political and sociological approaches of the subject in light of cultural studies, colonial studies, postcolonial and gender studies. Also included is a detailed study of subalternity within the new representations of French women of foreign origin. The presented research is based on discourse and content analyses of newspaper articles published between 2007 and 2013, as well as on field surveys with participant observations, performed in several organizations. From media analyses and field analyses, representations of foreign women within novel political issues can be understood ; settings where the question of women’s bodies remains central. Using gender as an analytical grid is the basis of the reflections is this thesis. This allows a rethinking of the notions of power and domination in society. The inquiry also describes the transformation of social representations of women of foreign origin and the practice of gender as an instrument of power applied to the female body. A transformation that has evolved with political mutations in society. An in-depth study of the relationships between gender, sex, body and the concept of intersectionality leads to a multitude of constructions and unique identity models. Finally, the political upheavals and current practices of power stir up more than ever collective memories and identity issues in French society through a major investment in the question of women
Choi, Nag-Hyun. "La politique dans les écrits intimes et la correspondance de Stendhal." Paris 8, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998PA081439.
Full textStendhal, in turn dragoon, civil servant and diplomat, was more conscious than any man of belonging to a world contunually in motion. Curious and eager for knowledge, he recounted the main political upheavals of his day in france and italy. He was interested above all anecdotes, which he felt to be of far greater significance than elevated theoretical discourse. His style of recounting political events did not in fact differ greatly from his manner of writing novels. The key feature in both is a linear narrative style, and the contradictions evident in his judgements are reminiscent of the hesitations of the heroes in his novels. Stendhal consistently takes up the opposing position to that of his interlocutor in order to ensure that the discussion remains open rather than petering out in a dreary consensus. However, this does not cast any doubt upon his political convictions, which though complex were nevertheless profoundly felt. His relationships with napoleon and the great writers and thinkers of his day (mme de stael, chateaubriand) also seem complex and passionate. Stendhal, with his open approach to the world, was not content to merely play the spectator to the great debates of his time concerning the freedom of the press, political intrigue, elections and so on. At the same time, it is remarkable that he never abandoned his passions, which occasionally overlapped withy the world of politics. As regards politics, stendhal managed to retain a casual stance while showing great eagerness for details. His personality is reflected in his ambiguous attitude. His political thinking is first and foremost illustrative of stendhal the man

Despite recognition of this right to work, various constraints persist and give rise to discrimination. Discrimination is sometimes de facto, in which case it is based in retrograde attitudes, and sometimes it is legal, in which case it is manifested in legal shortcomings. The legal tools used to promote women’s rights at work and to fight against all forms of professional discrimination are not completely identical in France and Cameroon. Nevertheless, the gains of one country can be perfectly transposed onto the other

Full textOn April 2nd 1874, the Club Alpin Francais enters the alpine adventure. Mouniaineering is then officially recognized and marks the beginning of the "conquerants de l'inutile" -- pioneers of useless conquests. Do women belong to this evolution? Do they also participate in this conquest? Based on officiaI materials published by the "CAF", on public and private archives, and on sports and feminist articles, this work questions the specificity of female mountaineering shows the effects of gender on the evolution of mountaineering. Therefore the male aspect of mountaineering, women are not only integrated within the CAF, right from the start, but their number is steadily increasing between 1874 and 1919. Women's involvement is nevertheless restricted to activities more appropriate with the contemporary representation of their status. They slowly manage to outgrow these boundaries to discover new frontiers and new difficulties. They claim and obtain new rights but without ever questioning hierarchy between genders and the female specificity. Ln doing so they foment changes in the female identity toward a freer, more dynamic and more educated image. Ln spite of these changes, the most adventurous ones do not gain access to the utmost revered position in mountaineering, called the " sans-guide ", which consists of leading the rope. This submissive attitude toward the male gender allows women to be tolerated and at the same time initiated by men and the alpine institution. The CAF participates in the creation of a new female persona, educated, strong and brave, devoted to her nation but following scrupulously the gender ruIes. By giving women the right of speech and vote, by organizing the training of young women, the CAF is ahead of its time with respect to other sports organizations. It participates in what it calls the "sane feminism"

Full textThis dissertation is a contribution to the contemporary study of the relationship between knowledge and empire. It examines the modalities of the involvement of French officers in the production of knowledge on theOttoman Empire in the framework of French imperialism. In this regard, this study aspires to present a socialand intellectual history of French military knowledge. Its case study deals with the writings of officers of theThird Republic on the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, from the Congress of Berlin (1878) until the outbreak ofthe Second World War (1939). The production of these writings is considered within the framework of thetransition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey, i.e. from an empire to a nation state. Throughan analysis of the officers’ careers, the study situates the Ottoman and post-Ottoman spaces within a largerfield that takes into account the circulation between metropolitan France and its colonies. It also allows forsituating these forms of knowledge vis-a-vis the very field that functions as a space for both acquisition of andexperimentation with it. Thus, two kinds of circulations are defined: the trans-colonial and the trans-Ottoman.Both the officers and their forms of knowledge circulate within and between these multiple and connectedspaces. The construction and use of these forms of knowledge are examined first for an imperial center in timesof peace, i.e. Istanbul during the reign of Abdülhamid II, and second for the Young Turk period. The studyfocuses on the forms of interactions (collaboration and resistance) between the French officers and theirprivileged interlocutors, the Young-Turk military elites who play a central role in the political developmentsof the country from the revolution of 1908 to the foundation of the Republic of Turkey (1923). The choice ofthe French army as an object of study reveals the regionally specific forms of both the French presence and ofthe forms of knowledge intricately tied to it, particularly in the provinces during military missions (OttomanMacedonia, 1904-1914), wars and occupations (Dardanelles, 1915, Istanbul, 1918-1923, Cilicia, 1919-1921).In these contexts, the production of knowledge serves the course of action (conquest, administration, pacification). This study also questions the redefinition of the role of the officers and their knowledge duringthe Republic of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1923-1939). The diversity of the media of knowledge production(knowledge production internal to the army, publications) and of the discourses of French officers(consistencies, discontinuities) who are part of the imperial project contradicts the idea of a Grande Muette, a“Great Mute [army]” whose agents are conceptually reduced to the role of mere recipients of orders

Full textIn Palestine, gender-related acts of violence against women is a taboo but is practised in silence, accepted and even socially justified. The answer to this domestic violence requires a criminal remedy in three steps: a moral awareness concerning this form of violence, criminalizing these acts, really resorting to the courts. Palestine still has a long way to go before it reaches this goal. It is essential to set up a concerted action so as to make sure that Palestine meets its international obligations in order to prevent and ban these acts of violence towards women. After making an inventory of this form of violence inflicted on women and analysing the historical, cultural, social and legal context in Palestine, this comparative research between the French and the Palestinian systems will unfold around two lines. In the first part, the main principles of the protection of human rights are highlighted as mentioned in the international conventions and as necessarily applied to women. Most important are the principles of equality and dignity which can help change women’s situation. Criminal law must echo the protection of these fundamental values by endeavouring to include the incrimination of behaviours which are contrary to these principles. If French criminal law widely includes this protection, on the other hand it is still at the rough stage in the criminal law as applied in Palestine because it is strongly influenced by cultural tradition. The tolerance for polygamy and the incrimination of adultery are striking examples of the inequality between men and women and of the discrimination. The second part more precisely deals with the criminal remedies for gender-related acts of violence, through the honour crime and sexual offences. The comparative study also shows huge differences between the French and Palestinian legal systems: tolerance and sometimes justification of these offences in the second one and on the other hand, increased repression in the first one. This thesis would like to offer solutions to reduce gender-related acts of violence against women. To do so, it seems adequate to encourage the creation of a workshop on the state of law in Palestine (legal and practical range), as well as recommend a precise and adequate legislation. Consequently, it is necessary to set up actions to inform and educate the youth, decision-makers, law enforcement bodies, magistrates and religious Imams so as to modify the mentality of the Palestinian society. Thanks to the education of citizens, the criminal principles will approach the requirements of a modern society, as they are inspired by Beccaria’s thought on the demands linked to offences and penalties. Fundamental principles must appear in the Palestinian criminal law: absolute equality between men and women and incrimination of any violation and act of discrimination toward women. However, it is not enough to assert principles; they have to lie upon a solid basis and should merge without leading to incompatible results. We thus hope we have managed to highlight some core principles in the present research, while leaving to the facts the importance they must have

Full textBy the end of the XXth century, when the fall of moral values is obvious, when technological advances are multifarious, and when the drop of birthrates in western countries is unquestionable, it seems interesting to study the way French law has considered the problems relating to pregnancy. It took good account of two sets of rights the rise of which was due to sociological moves: * the right of the going-to-be-born child : it recognizes to the becoming child right to enjoy a biological life and a satisfying legal one : * the right to bear the child : it raises problems of ethics, since it cannot be unbounded. Conception, without which pregnancy would not exist, is at the focal point of doctrine and of case law in this field. French law thus watches for the conceived child's protection, by means of the law of family and of civil law, which is very normative, and somewhat cautious in front of the multiplication of marital lives. French law also watches for the conceived child bearing woman, by means of a very dynamic and much evolutive social law, which is targeted at political regulation. Social law does not hesitate to grant woman exorbitant privileges regarding regular standards of law, at the risk of making her the victims of an overprotection
