Full textFrom its beginings, the conquest generated a very important discursive production which aimed to know and learn about Algeria. We suggest a reflection on the issues of the otherness, which defines the other on its constant confrontation with the self. Deep idiological divisions cross the speeches which separates the military, politicians and colonial representatives. It is here where the notion of " discursive formation " seems to be pertinent, underlining the necissity to take into account the variations of the positionings of the enunciative subjectivity. How do these writings expess the otherness? In which contexts of enunciation, narration and description do they do it ? These are the basic questions which allow to understand the figures of otherness through the social espace, the conflictual tensions and the historical determinations. In this analysis, we examine the contextual use of the praxemes : djihad, barbary, raid, arab nationality. . . This study tries to understand the contradictions within the corpus itself

Full textThis study seeks to get a more accurate knowledge of public opinion and morale of French soldiers during the year 1916. The basis of the analysis consists of weekly reports on soldiers’ briefs. These reports were kept by military archives services. They are able to offer the evolution of public opinion as well as the main everyday cares of warriors. An opinion pulls has been tested and reconstituted appropriated to these corpus. The study then endeavors to determine the ideals, beliefs and ideological features on which the opinions were based: strength of patriotism, sense of national duty, conviction in victory and large shared submission to the fate of war

Full textThis dissertation is a contribution to the contemporary study of the relationship between knowledge and empire. It examines the modalities of the involvement of French officers in the production of knowledge on theOttoman Empire in the framework of French imperialism. In this regard, this study aspires to present a socialand intellectual history of French military knowledge. Its case study deals with the writings of officers of theThird Republic on the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, from the Congress of Berlin (1878) until the outbreak ofthe Second World War (1939). The production of these writings is considered within the framework of thetransition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey, i.e. from an empire to a nation state. Throughan analysis of the officers’ careers, the study situates the Ottoman and post-Ottoman spaces within a largerfield that takes into account the circulation between metropolitan France and its colonies. It also allows forsituating these forms of knowledge vis-a-vis the very field that functions as a space for both acquisition of andexperimentation with it. Thus, two kinds of circulations are defined: the trans-colonial and the trans-Ottoman.Both the officers and their forms of knowledge circulate within and between these multiple and connectedspaces. The construction and use of these forms of knowledge are examined first for an imperial center in timesof peace, i.e. Istanbul during the reign of Abdülhamid II, and second for the Young Turk period. The studyfocuses on the forms of interactions (collaboration and resistance) between the French officers and theirprivileged interlocutors, the Young-Turk military elites who play a central role in the political developmentsof the country from the revolution of 1908 to the foundation of the Republic of Turkey (1923). The choice ofthe French army as an object of study reveals the regionally specific forms of both the French presence and ofthe forms of knowledge intricately tied to it, particularly in the provinces during military missions (OttomanMacedonia, 1904-1914), wars and occupations (Dardanelles, 1915, Istanbul, 1918-1923, Cilicia, 1919-1921).In these contexts, the production of knowledge serves the course of action (conquest, administration, pacification). This study also questions the redefinition of the role of the officers and their knowledge duringthe Republic of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1923-1939). The diversity of the media of knowledge production(knowledge production internal to the army, publications) and of the discourses of French officers(consistencies, discontinuities) who are part of the imperial project contradicts the idea of a Grande Muette, a“Great Mute [army]” whose agents are conceptually reduced to the role of mere recipients of orders

Full textThe objective of our research is to interpret the types of errors made in written documents by Korean junior officers studying French. In the South Korean Military Academy for the Army French grammar is the most important part of the syllabus, though now more importance is given to communicative aspects of language training than previously. In communication the two competences (written and spoken) are both priorities in foreign language training. The organization of language training in the South Korean Military Academy for the Army and the distance between France and South Korea means our research has concentrated on the analysis of errors in written communication and ways to improve these. This work is in three parts. The first examines the current situation with language teaching at the South Korean Military Academy for the Army. This allowed us to follow the motivation and attitude of students learning French and to find out how it is taught in this school. The second part concentrates on the theory and methodology based on language research for learners of the language, using comparative research and starting with comparative analysis of the study between languages. The third part analyses in detail the linguistic difficulties in written French (both text and structure) encountered by intermediate level students at the South Korean Military Academy for the Army. This detailed analysis allows us to better understand the learning process for French language by these students at the South Korean Military Academy for the Army and to propose areas for improvement in the teaching of French
Buton-Maquet, Kevin. "L'individualité militaire et ses vertus : Ethique et écrits tactiques de la Révolution française à la décolonisation." Thesis, Lyon, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LYSE3028.
Full textThis work aims at introducing to a philosophical history of French tactics from the late eighteenth century to the decolonization wars. The focus is on the military individuality. The rise of the individual is indeed a reality even prior to the French Revolution . However, it becomes increasingly significant as the soldier steps into its newfound role as a citizen, thereby raising the issue of its status and conceptualization in military thinking. Is the individual a factor of irrationality and unpredictability in a formation, which should therefore remain incheck through scientific use of tactics? Or perhaps the individual in its singularity should rather constitute the starting point of an empirical investigation? The progressive individualization of the soldier in tactical doctrine ― whether in combat, at the barracks, or generally as a citizen ― is analyzed through a body of texts rarely studied by philosophy. These texts arewritten by French military writers (often officers writing outside the bounds of a strict orthodoxy towards official doctrinal teaching), who are attempting to restore some intelligibility to modern warfare and to the action of the individual in its midst

Carré, Daniel. "Loeiz Herrieu : un paysan breton dans la Grande Guerre : analyse de sa correspondance avec son épouse." Rennes 2, 1999. http://www.theses.fr/1999REN20015.
Full textThe Breton writer and publicist, Loeiz Herrieu (1879-1953), devoted a great deal of his work to the first world war : his war journal +kamdro en ankeu ; (turning point of death)is one of the most important pieces of contemporary literature written in the Breton language. However, without disregard of his writing abilities, the main concern of this thesis is the man himself, his nature, his personality, his family ties, his relationship with other soldiers, the evolution of his ideas and his personal perceptions and experiences of war. . . This is achieved by a highly detailed analysis of his private mail to his wife (620 letters) kept so far safely within close family. Beyond the soldiers's honesty (largely justified by comparing his accounts with military archives and the accounts of other soldiers (with similar background, academic level, opinions. . . ) And by the fact that he met the criteria of a +good witness; as defined by Norton Cru), the analysis also reveals the man, husband, father, catholic, countryman and Breton cultural militant faced with the war (which he hates because it is degrading to mankind) and with day to day militarism (which he dismisses in the name of moral standards and honesty). His letters reveal an extraordinary man, driven by intense inner thoughts; in order to keep going he refuses to make any compromise with the world around him. His strong sense of duty and his total submission to god's will nurture his undying hopes of seeing Brittany and his family once again, and the triumph of law and justice, which are worthes he accepts suffering for. The thesis and documents (corpus of 275 letters, detailed biography of L. Herrieu between 1879 and 1914, miscellaneous documents) are written in Breton
