Full textIn the mid-eighteenth century, Sicily became a new destination for European travelers. Witnessing the changes in the traditional European Grand Tour and the social and cultural upheavals of the continent, the travelogues in Sicily help to crystallize the perception of identities from the Self and the Other. The representations of ancient and modern Sicily expressed among the travelers of the eighteenth century will profoundly mark the collective imagination. In search of new viaticus experiences, remnants of ancient Sicily, on the one hand insular exoticism that fascinates readers since the "discovery" of the Pacific Islands andthe Indian Ocean, travelers will also be confronted with the destabilizing experience of the unknown and displacement. Giving meaning to the Sicilian otherness that expresses it selfbefore their eyes then becomes a necessity. And the use of theories of the time and stereotypes then allows to build a portrait of Sicily that reflects as much the representation of the Other Sicilian, as the travelers themselves. The historical and cultural heritage of Sicily makes it a destination in its own right. Taken by the attempts to share large geographical and cultural groups between the East and the West, of which Sicily, neither quite nor quite the other, seems on the contrary, to form this point of junction in the heart of the Mediterranean. Full textThe articulation between the nation-building process and the increasing references to western european countries, which caracterizes the xixth century in latin america constitutes the scope of this study. In the aftermath of independence, the quest for legitimacy by the new powers as well as the task of constructing the state led the "nation-builders" to study, analyse, diffuse and use in the public debate the political experiences of the european countries. The first part of the work offers a study of the use of european political rhetoric within the public debate in Colombia, in the years 1840 to 1860 : the mecanisms by which an "imaginaire" from Europe is diffused by the political actors for their own partisan needs is studied with particular detail. The second part examines the development of travel to Europe among the political elites by that time. Being a subject of discussion in the national context, the fact that overseas travel becomes generalised has a multiple impact on Colombian politics: as well as reinforcing national feeling through the real discovery of "difference", it invites a closer inspiration from the European models of nation-building. Finally, the third part depicts the intents to import institutionnal models (state, education, army, church) fostered by the political powers during the three last decades of the century. Whilst those attempts generally end up in failure with regard to the state-building process, the nationalist ideology created by the governments to compensate their use of foreign models leads to the definition of the political myths which will dominate XXth-century olombia

Full textThis dissertation is at the crossroads of two distinct disciplinary fields : African American studies and the history of the book. More specifically, it examines the publication, circulation, and reception of antebellum slave narratives—the narratives of Frederick Douglass, William Wells Brown, and Harriet Jacobs, as well as a number of lesser-known works. The story of the slave narrative is well rehearsed : narratives of ex-slaves, critics say, were usually written in collaboration with white abolitionists, with antislavery societies subsidizing publication ; they met with considerable success, going through multiple editions and selling in the tens of thousands ; they were largely directed toward a northern white audience ; and they soon emerged as a distinct genre in antebellum America. None of these statements is fundamentally untrue. The overall picture they paint of antebellum slave narratives is, however, a distorted one. Slave narratives were produced through a variety of authorial economies. Investigating these economies allows to shed new light not only on the slave narrative as a genre, but also on African Americans’ print practices at a time when the publishing industry was still emerging and when book people were reluctant to publish and distribute antislavery literature—at least before Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin came out in 1852. Acknowledging the heterogeneous and fluid nature of what is often perceived as a homogeneous and strictly codified genre gives us a better sense of how slave narratives might have been variously received and consumed in the decades preceding the Civil War
