Abstract:
Semiconductor materials based on metal high crosslinked-vinyl polymer composites were prepared through loading of Pd(OAc)2 on both Poly(ethylene-1,2-diyl dimethacrylate) (poly(EDMA)) and poly(ethylene-1,2-diyl dimethacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) (Poly(EDMA-co-MMA)). The thermochemical properties for both poly(EDMA) and poly(EDMA-co-MMA) were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis TGA technique. The dielectric permittivity, AC electrical conductivity and conduction mechanism for all the prepared polymers and their Pd(OAc)2 composites were studied. The results showed that the loading of polymers with Pd(OAc)2 led to an increase in the magnitudes of both the dielectric permittivity and AC electrical conductivity (σac). The value of σac increased from 1.38 × 10−5 to 5.84 × 10−5 S m−1 and from 6.40 × 10−6 to 2.48 × 10−5 S m−1 for poly(EDMA) and poly(EDMA-co-MMA), respectively, at 1 MHz and 340 K after loading with Pd(OAc)2. Additionally, all the prepared polymers and composites were considered as semiconductors at all the test frequencies and in the temperature range of 300–340 K. Furthermore, it seems that a conduction mechanism for all the samples could be Quantum Mechanical Tunneling (QMT).

Abstract:
Abstract. A chronology called EDML1 has been developed for the EPICA ice core from Dronning Maud Land (EDML). EDML1 is closely interlinked with EDC3, the new chronology for the EPICA ice core from Dome-C (EDC) through a stratigraphic match between EDML and EDC that consists of 322 volcanic match points over the last 128 ka. The EDC3 chronology comprises a glaciological model at EDC, which is constrained and later selectively tuned using primary dating information from EDC as well as from EDML, the latter being transferred using the tight stratigraphic link between the two cores. Finally, EDML1 was built by exporting EDC3 to EDML. For ages younger than 41 ka BP EDML1/EDC3 is based on dated volcanic events and on a match to the Greenlandic GICC05 time scale via 10Be and methane. The internal consistency between EDML1 and EDC3 is estimated to be typically ~6 years and always less than 450 years over the last 128 ka (always less than 130 years over the last 60 ka), which reflects an unprecedented synchrony of time scales. EDML1 ends at 150 ka BP (2417 m depth) because the match between EDML and EDC becomes ambiguous further down. This hints to a complex ice flow history for the deepest 350 m of the EDML ice core, which amongst other reasons may be caused by spatial variations of the geothermal heat flux.

Abstract:
Objective. To estimate the density of calcium deposits of atherosclerotic plaques of coronary and carotid arteries in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 using multislice computed tomography (MSCT).Material and methods. 251 patients with multifocal atherosclerosis (MA) were examined using MSCT. Determined equivalent density of calcium deposits (EDCD) atherosclerotic plaque of coronary and carotid arteries.Results. According to the data of MSCT in patients with MA irrespective of concomitant diabetes was a high incidence of calcification of the coronary and carotid arteries. In Group 1 EDCD coronary arteries was 0.235 (0.214; 0.254) mg/mm3, in the group 2 - 0,219 (0,192; 0,242) mg/mm3. EDCD of carotid arteries in patients with diabetes was 0.183 (0.171; 0.193) mg/mm3, in patients without diabetes - 0.226 (0.199; 0.247) mg/mm3. There was a significant difference in the groups EDCD values for coronary (p = 0.017), and the carotid (p = 0.000003) artery.Conclusion. Using index EDCD obtained on the basis of routine MSCT coronary and carotid arteries in patients with MA with DM compared with those without diabetes had significantly higher density calcifications in projection of coronary and low density of calcium deposits carotid arteries without regard to the degree of Agatston calcification scale.

Abstract:
“About the show:Professor Neil Gemmell uses cutting-edge environmental DNA science to unravel the mystery of the Loch Ness monster. Neil’s high-tech monster hunt opens a new chapter in the search for Nessie as he puts the leading theories to the ultimate scientific test.” [i]This description misleads in every important respect. The mystery is not unraveled; the leading theory is not even mentioned, and Gemmell’s reason for embarking on this project — namely, to spread awareness of the potential benefits that can accrue from research on environmental DNA (eDNA) — is not well served, because there is no useful explanation of what eDNA science does, what it can and cannot accomplish, and why [ii]. That lack is all the sadder because the results in this case with respect to Nessies are not only incomplete, they are inconclusive and probably even wrong in an important respect.[i] https://www.travelchannel.com/shows/loch-ness-monster-new-evidence[ii] That eDNA work is not easy or infallible is pointed out in a comment on Roland Watson’s informative and reliable blog: “as with any tests that involve biologicals, there are error rates. And eDNA is not immune to these errors. . . . eDNA testing is also affected by seasonal changes — of how creatures operate in their environment, as well as the quality of the effluent at different times of the year, and so on. . . . [F]or eDNA testing to detect creatures properly there would have to be such testing throughout Loch Ness on a quarterly basis over probably at least two years, and probably have close to 350 to 450 sampling points — and doing this at least at five or six different consistent depths. I think that Roland correctly pointed out that nothing was taken way down deep, and there probably should have been. Also, eDNA actually lasts much, much longer in soils than in water. So taking samples off the Loch bottom might be a fruitful endeavor.” Indeed, there are several clues indicating that Nessies spend most of their time down deep, possibly in the two basins known to be deeper than 200 m (Shine & Martin 1988).

Abstract:
Background Environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys are appealing options for monitoring aquatic biodiversity. While factors affecting eDNA persistence, capture and amplification have been heavily studied, watershed-scale surveys of fish communities and our confidence in such need further exploration. Methods We characterized fish eDNA compositions using rapid, low-volume filtering with replicate and control samples scaled for a single Illumina MiSeq flow cell, using the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA locus for taxonomic profiling. Our goals were to determine: (1) spatiotemporal variation in eDNA abundance, (2) the filtrate needed to achieve strong sequencing libraries, (3) the taxonomic resolution of 12S ribosomal sequences in the study environment, (4) the portion of the expected fish community detectable by 12S sequencing, (5) biases in species recovery, (6) correlations between eDNA compositions and catch per unit effort (CPUE) and (7) the extent that eDNA profiles reflect major watershed features. Our bioinformatic approach included (1) estimation of sequencing error from unambiguous mappings and simulation of taxonomic assignment error under various mapping criteria; (2) binning of species based on inferred assignment error rather than by taxonomic rank; and (3) visualization of mismatch distributions to facilitate discovery of distinct haplotypes attributed to the same reference. Our approach was implemented within the St. Regis River, NY, USA, which supports tribal and recreational fisheries and has been a target of restoration activities. We used a large record of St. Regis-specific observations to validate our assignments. Results We found that 300 mL drawn through 25-mm cellulose nitrate filters yielded greater than 5 ng/µL DNA at most sites in summer, which was an approximate threshold for generating strong sequencing libraries in our hands. Using inferred sequence error rates, we binned 12S references for 110 species on a state checklist into 85 single-species bins and seven multispecies bins. Of 48 bins observed by capture survey in the St. Regis, we detected eDNA consistent with 40, with an additional four detections flagged as potential contaminants. Sixteen unobserved species detected by eDNA ranged from plausible to implausible based on distributional data, whereas six observed species had no 12S reference sequence. Summed log-ratio compositions of eDNA-detected taxa correlated with log(CPUE) (Pearson’s R = 0.655, P < 0.001). Shifts in eDNA composition of several taxa and a genotypic shift in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) coincided with the Hogansburg Dam, NY, USA. In summary, a simple filtering apparatus operated by field crews without prior expertise gave useful summaries of eDNA composition with minimal evidence of field contamination. 12S sequencing achieved useful taxonomic resolution despite the short marker length, and data exploration with standard bioinformatic tools clarified taxonomic uncertainty and sources of error.

Abstract Analysis of proposed 400×10 Gbps super dense wavelength division multiplexing (SD-WDM) system has been evaluated in term of crosstalk and optical signal to crosstalk ratio (OSCR). Amplification is carried out using RAMAN-EDFA hybrid optical amplifier (HOA) for the transmission of 300 km. The pump power of 550 mW at 1520 nm and 580 mW at 1530 nm are set to RAMAN and EDFA optical amplifier respectively. Further, the power level of 0 dBm with channel spacing of 100 GHz has shown the remarkable outcome of controlling the fiber nonlinearity to maintain the best rating optical communication for long haul distance.

Dong, Shuyun. "Transcript-Specific Cytoplasmic Degradation of YRA1 Pre-mRNA Mediated by the Yeast EDC3 Protein: A Dissertation." eScholarship@UMMS, 2007. https://escholarship.umassmed.edu/gsbs_diss/352.

Full text
Abstract:
mRNA degradation is a fundamental process that controls both the level and the fidelity of gene expression. Using a combination of bioinformatic, genomic, genetic, and molecular biology approaches, we have shown that Edc3p, a yeast mRNA decay factor, controls the stability of the intron-containing YRA1 pre-mRNA. We found that Edc3p-mediated degradation of YRA1 pre-mRNA: 1) is a component of a negative feedback loop involved in the autoregulation of YRA1, 2) takes place in the cytoplasm, 3) is independent of translation, 4) occurs through a deadenylation-independent decapping and 5΄ to 3΄ exonucleotic decay mechanism, and 5) is controlled by specific cis-acting elements and trans-regulatory factors. Cis-regulation of YRA1 pre-mRNA degradation is complicated and precise. Sequences in exon1 inhibit YRA1 pre-mRNA splicing and/or promote pre-mRNA export in a size-dependent but sequence-independent manner. Sequences in the intron dictate the substrate specificity for Edc3p-mediated decay. Five structurally different but functionally interdependent modules were identified in the YRA1 intron. Two modules, designated Edc3p-responsive elements (EREs), are required for triggering an Edc3p-response. Three other modules, designated translational repression elements (TREs), are required for repressing translation of YRA1 pre-mRNA. TREs enhance the efficiency of the response of the EREs to Edc3p by inhibiting translation-dependent nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD). Trans-regulation of YRA1 pre-mRNA is governed by Yra1p, which inhibits YRA1 pre-mRNA splicing and commits the pre-mRNA to nuclear export, and the RNP export factors, Mex67p and Crm1p, which jointly promote YRA1 pre-mRNA export. Mex67p also appears to interact with sequences in the YRA1 intron to promote translational repression and to enhance the Edc3p response of YRA1 pre-mRNA. These results illustrate how common steps in the nuclear processing, export, and degradation of a transcript can be uniquely combined to control the expression of a specific gene and suggest that Edc3p-mediated decay may have additional regulatory functions in eukaryotic cells.

Thus, our objective is to verify the concept of body culture present in Children's Education through the National Curriculum Referential analysis for Children's Education and the National Curriculum Guidelines for Children's Education; Identify the concept of human being/child, regular education/children's education that the National Curriculum Reference for Children's Education, the National Curriculum Guidelines for Children's Education and the National Policy for Children's Education support. Our hypothesis is that there is no scientific concepts in documents dealing on body culture and that this lack of scientific undertakes the process of learning in kindergarden. Therefore, our investigation aim to answer the following issues: What is the concept of human being/child and education/children's education wich sustain those official documents for teaching in Children's Education? In particular, what is the concept of body culture they assume? The starting point to build this work was given by the defense of the historical dialectical materialist knowledge's theory. Whereas research technique, we used the content analysis. We have presented the concept of human being, analyzed how this concept directs the course of training; then we have treated the specifics of child development, pedagogical concepts present in Children's Education institutions and the role of teachers in this development process; we have analyzed the concept of body culture and its role in the development process in childhood; after that, we have presented the analysis of the documents. Finally, we have found that the guiding documents of early Children's Education originate from a biologicist concept of development and are based on the pedagogy of "learning to learn". In conclusion, we seek to summarize the analysis results, we criticize the pedagogy of "learning to learn" and point out the importance of the children own the elements of body culture from an early age, realizing that they must be transmitted based on scientific concepts .
Sought to highlight the importance of the formation of the subject through an (auto) biography understood as life history and their overlaps with the (trans) formation of the educator. I conducted a qualitative research working with narrative analysis, through interviews, study of documents, photos and observations of teacher practice. All this guided by research problem: it is possible to observe whether the contemporary Jesuit tradition, so solidly built, and continues to solidify perpassando on identity and belonging in employees' attitudes and postures of the College Anchieta through the study of an autobiography of life? While Ignatian educator as (trans) forming from its practice Fernando has essence of life inspired by the example of entrepreneurship and boldness of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. The main objective of this work is to visualize the Jesuit tradition in education: identity and sense of belonging to the mission, with its principles and values and the process of (trans) formation of the educator in an institution like the College Anchieta, in the present, through a history of life.It is revealing in light of Ignatian Pedagogy, education is a fertile field for (self) training, bringing the capacity of (trans) form people. Hence the example of Ferdinand touched by Ignatian pedagogy that flooded the soul of his trainers Jesuits, became, as lay teacher, plus his personal qualities, a multiplier genuine. Managed to attract, encourage and further serve as a model for hundreds of young people, to live the experience of the passion for scientific knowledge, made their career choices with more discernment

Abstract:
Industrialization and "development" during the last 200 years have led to an increase of pesticides, an intensified use of synthetic chemicals, higher levels of environmental pollution, and more exposure to hazardous working conditions. Environmental toxins, many of which are endocrine disruptors, are stored in fat tissue, increasing reproductive health risks for both women and men. Women’s bodies are particularly vulnerable as sites for creating, growing, feeding, and nurturing the next generation. And yet, women’s lives are consistently devalued, especially in a capitalist economy, so that a woman’s rights to her own reproductive health are no longer guaranteed. In this thesis I first review ecological destruction, environmental policies, and food safety/security issues for women. I then examine neoliberal globalization as an active participant in the destruction of the environment and an attack on global health. I discuss how utilizing feminist theory effectively, and actively, will ensure women the right to their health. I employ postmodern feminist and refigured ecofeminist theory to demonstrate how a feminist perspective is necessary in the development of policies that address the problem of endocrine disruptors in terms of women’s reproductive health and the health of future generations. Finally, I suggest that the precautionary principle must include a feminist perspective to fully succeed.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the categories of 300+ environmental chemicals measured in the blood and urine of Americans by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some are endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and substitute for endogenous hormones in a variety of metabolic processes affecting sexual health, obesity, diabetes, and behavior. The Monotonic Dose-Response (linear dose-response) is inappropriate when evaluating the health consequences of EDCs. Nonmonotonic Dose-Response Curves are better for considering the affinity of the ligand for the receptor, receptor saturation, ligand specificity, and tissue specificity of the receptor distribution. These factors combine to explain why ambient levels of many environmental chemicals cause damage to tissues or development and why low-level exposures can create disease different from higher level exposures. Exposure during critical stages of fetal development may cause permanent changes not apparent until adulthood. Environmental chemicals that are not EDCs may harm by altering genetic material and causing apoptosis.

Branded content is an advertising format that integrates brand equity with content of interest that engages the audience, and it does so in a natural, emotional, and non-intrusive way. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of branded content versus conventional advertising on young audiences by using neuromarketing techniques. A content analysis of 31 branded content case studies selected by the Branded Content Marketing Association (BCMA) in Spain was carried out, and the electrodermal activity (EDA) of 70 subjects between 18 and 30 years of age was recorded when they were exposed to branded content stimuli in advertisements. The results confirm a greater impact from the stimuli of branded content, even though there was no significant difference.

Abstract:
Mitochondrial DNA is an important tool for human identification and is used to differentiate between human and animal blood at the crime scene, because in extreme conditions nuclear DNA is severely destroyed while Mitochondrial DNA contains multiple copies (200–2000) per cell and resists harsh and more stable conditions. Seventy-two blood samples were collected from humans (Homo sapiens), sheep (Ovis aries), goats (Capra hircus), and cows (Bos taurus) (18 blood samples for each). All blood samples were withdrawn by a technician and 5 ml were aspirated using an aseptic technique and transferred to EDTA-Na2 tubes. They were mixed well and stored in a refrigerator. The collection took 2 weeks (May 15, 2019–May 30, 2019). All samples were collected from Al-Diwanyia city. The results of PCR testing revealed that the primer pairs were specific and non-specific products did not appear for all samples. The amplification of Homo sapiens mitochondrial DNA with primer pairs of other (Ovis aries, Capra hircus, and Bos taurus) and amplification of each with primer pairs of another genus gave negative results, and this is primary evidence for primer pair specificity. The amplicon of 16S rRNA gene of Homo sapiens was 1200 bp, Ovis aries was 1060 bp, Capra hircus was 820 bp, and Bos taurus was 1300 bp. The sequencing revealed that no cross-reactivity of designed primer pairs and the PCR assay based on the designed primer pairs will be simple, fast, sensitive, specific, and cost-effective. There is sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in the designed species-specific primer pairs and applicability of the designed primer pairs in forensics to investigate blood spots or evidence belonging for human, sheep, goat, and cow.

"Characterisation of Endo-Polygalacturonases Activities of Rice (Oryza sativa) Fungal Pathogens in Nigeria, West Africa." In Grain and Seed Proteins Functionality. Full text
Abstract:
Rice (Oryza sativa) is cultivated in swampy geographical locations of tropical Nigeria, West Africa. Here it is infected by a host of fungal pathogens on the field or contaminated at postharvest. This has led to its loss and reduction in its production in both the national and global market. Lasiodiplodia theobromae and Rhizoctonia solani have recently been identified as the major fungal phytopathogens causing the deterioration of this grain on the field and at postharvest and affecting its production in Nigeria leading to gross capital loss. Hence the need to determine physiological control measures for the eradication of both phytopathogens on the field and at postharvest. In this study, tropical strains of Lasiodiplodia theobromae and Rhizoctonia solani obtained from deteriorated rice (Oryza sativa) were grown in a growth nutrient medium composed of MgSo4.7H20, K2HPO4, FeSO4.7H20, potassium nitrate and pectin at 30°C. Endo-Polygalacturonase activities were produced by the fungal isolates in the growth medium within ten days. The endo-polygalacturonases from both fungi were purified by a combination of ammonium sulphate precipitation, dialysis, gel filtration (on Sephadex G-100 column) and ion-exchange chromatography (on CM-Sephadex C-50 and CM-Sephadex C-25 columns). The molecular weight of endo-polygalacturonase from the Lasiodiplodia theobromae using Sephadex G-100 was estimated as 124,000 Daltons while that of the Rhizoctonia solani was estimated as 92,000 Daltons. The purified endo-polygalcuronase from the Lasiodiplodia theobromae exhibited optimum activity at 30°C and at pH 4.5 while that from the Rhizoctonia solani exhibited optimum activity at 32°C and at pH 5.0. The purified endo-polygalacturonases from both fungi exhibited optimum activities at 0.2% pectin concentration. They were stimulated by Ca2+ but inhibited by ethlylenediamine tetracetic acid (EDTA) and 2,4-dinitrophenol. The purified endo-polygalacturonase from the Lasiodiplodia theobromae lost 80% of its activity within 20 minutes of heat at 80°C. While the purified endo-polygalacturonase from the Rhizoctonia solani lost 82% of its activity within 20 minutes of heat at 80°C. Potassium nitrate as nitrogen source in the defined growth medium with pectin as carbon source supported highest activity of endo-polygalacturonase by the Lasiodiplodia theobromae while ammonium chloride as nitrogen source in the defined growth medium with pectin as carbon source supported highest activity of endo-polygalacturonase by the Rhizoctonia solani. In conclusion, the conditions inhibiting endo-polygalacturonases from Lasiodiplodia theobromae and Rhizoctonia solani capable of degrading the pectin portion of rice (Oryza sativa) can be adapted as feasible control measures limiting the infection and contamination of rice (Oryza sativa) by these phytopathogens on the field and at postharvest. Temperature and pH extreme from 30°C and pH 4.5 will be feasible inhibitory control measures for the growth of Lasiodiplodia theobromae on rice (Oryza sativa) in Nigeria while temperature and pH extreme from 32°C and pH 5.0 will inhibit growth of Rhizoctonia solani on the grain. These physiological conditions will preserve pectin in rice (Oryza sativa) from degradation by these two fungal phytopathogens.

"pology) should help the student acquire a holistic approach to health and disease and to recognize the interrelationships of cultural, social, psychologi-cal, and environmental factors with the psysiological and biochemical pro-cesses of the body" (Willard Report, 1966, p. 27). Evaluation of the Mandate The important potential role of sociology in the curriculum of the family physician programs has been endorsed repeatedly before, during, and since the publication of the above-mentioned blue-ribbon commission reports (Silver, 1963, p. 74-77; GP, 1966, p. 225-246; Harrell, 1970, p. 61-64). That potential role has been greatly enhanced by the passage of the Health Educa-tion and Manpower Act in 1976, which mandated that by 1980, 50% of all medical students graduating from medical school should be entering residen-cies in the three designated primary care specialties—internal medicine, pediatrics, and family practice. An additional aspect of this act was the allocation of some $40,000,000 for the expansion and improvement of existing family medicine residencies and for the creation of additional resi-dency programs. The question at hand—almost 12 years after these recommendations were submitted to medical educators-is whether a new breed of physicians is being produced by training in family medicine. Is there a new type of physi-cian who is "aware not only of his patient's physicial illness, but also of interrelations of family members and of family and community and socio-economic factors affecting the health of family members?" (Silver, 1965, p. 188-189). There are clearly two elements that must be distinguished in evaluating this mandate to train family physicians—one quantitative and the other qualitative. As far as quantitative changes in the attention paid to training family physicians, there can be no doubt that significant shifts have occurred in the past decade. In 1967, there were only three family medicine training programs in the United States, at the Universities of Miami (Florida), Roches-ter, and Oklahoma. By 1970 there were 49 programs, in 1975 there were 233, and in 1977 there were well over 300. In 1970 family practice became a." In Family Medicine. Abstract:
A well characterised anti-thrombospondin (TSP) monoclonal antibody (Mab) LYP8 was used to investigate the presence of TSP receptors on Glanzmann thrombasthenic (G.T.) platelets. LYP8 inhibited platelet aggregation induced by low concentrations of thrombin (0.05 U/ml) or collagen (0.5 ug/ml). The presence of LYP8 did not affect the number of sites and Kd of 125I-fibrinogen binding to thrombin-stimulated normal platelets. Binding of LYP8 to normal platelets was minimal in whole blood (300 IgG molecules/ olatelet), increased in citrated PRP (1187 ± 209 IgG molecules/ platelet) and washed platelets (2967 ± 1278 IgG molecules/platelet) . Thrombin stimulation of platelets, washed in the presence of 2 mM calcium, increased the number of LYP8 binding sites (14917 ± 42n IgG molecules/platelet). Addition of EDTA (5mM) to thrombin-stimulated platelets did not reduce the number of LYP8 binding sites. The number of LYP8 binding sites on thrombin-stimulated platelets of three Glanzmann thrombasthenic patients (showing an absence of the glycoprotein (GP) lib and IIIa)was similar to normals in the presence of 2 mM calcium or 5 mM EDTA. In competitive binding, Mab LYP18 directed against the GPIIb-IIIa complex did not inhibit the binding of labelled monoclonal antibody LYP8. These results strongly suggest that TSP binds to a membrane receptor different from the GPIIb-IIIa complex in the presence of calcium or EDTA. This unidentified receptor may be GPIV also known as GPIIIb (Asch, A. et al. Clin. Res. 1986, 34:450A).

Abstract:
Abstract Chelating agents are used to stimulate high-temperature carbonate reservoirs and remove mineral scales. For field applications, commercial chelates—EDTA, DTPA, GLDA, etc.—are commonly supplied as 3550 wt% (1.2-1.7 M) solutions and diluted two times in water. However, the dependence of the reaction rate on the concentration of chelate in solution has never been quantified. This paper focuses on determining the kinetics of calcite dissolution as a function of the dilution factor of commonly used chelates at acidic pH. Using a rotating disk apparatus, the kinetics of calcite marble dissolution in 0.10.25 M EDTA (pH=4.9-5.0), 0.1-0.25 M DTPA (pH=3.5-5.0), and 0.28-0.85 M GLDA (pH=3.7-5.0) solutions has been investigated. The dissolution of calcite in all chelates has a negative fractional-order that increases with temperature in the range -0.6 < n< -1.9. Thus, less concentrated chelate solutions react faster with calcite, and the effect of chelate dilution becomes less pronounced with a temperature increase. For example, three times dilution of pH=3.7 commercial GLDA solution—from commonly used 50 vol% (0.85 M) to 16.7 vol% (0.28 M)—increases calcite dissolution rate 8.4, 4.9, 2.7, and 2.0 times at 98.6, 116.6, 134.6, and 188.6°F, respectively. Dilution of pH=5.0 EDTA and pH=3.5 DTPA from 0.25 M to 0.1 M increases the dissolution rate of calcite 1.4-3.1 times at 98.6-188.6°F. Probable reasons for such an unusual reaction behavior are discussed in the paper. Presented results are integral for designing the stimulation operations in carbonate reservoir rocks and the removal of carbonate scales.

Abstract:
We have recently shown that platelets possess specific binding sites for Clq, a subcomponent of the first component of complement, Cl, and that occupancy of these receptor sites correlates with the previously described inhibitory effect of Clq on collagen-induced platelet aggregation. To further characterize platelet Clq receptors, washed platelets were solubilized in 5 mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 7.5 containing 10 mM EDTA, 150 mM NaCl, 10 mM EACA, 0.5 mM PMSF, and 1% Triton X-100. After dialysis against 5 mM phosphate buffer pH 7.5 containing 10 mM EDTA, 20 mM NaCl, 10 mM EACA,0.5 mM PMSF and 0.1% Triton X-100, the lysate was passed over Clq-Sepharose-4B affinity columns. A single protein peak eluted with buffer containing 300 mM NaCl. This peak was composed of two predominant molecular weight species (85-95K, 60-66K) as assessed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under non-reducing conditions. When 125-iodine surface labeled platelets were solubilized and applied to Clq-Sepharose affinity resins, the same two molecular weight species eluted and could be visualized by autoradiography following SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Immunoabsorption studies performed under nondenaturing conditions using protein A and the IIl/Dl monoclonal antibody, which binds specifically to platelets and inhibits platelet-Clq interactions, revealed that the 85-95K molecular weight component was preferentially absorbed, but incomplete immunoabsorption of the 60-66K molecular weight constituent was also noted. Affinity purified Clq binding sites sedimented as a single peak during 5-40% sucrose density ultracentrifugation with an S value of approximately 2.4. In addition, both the 85-95K and the 60-66K molecular weight species coeluted in the void volume of Sephadex G-100 columns. The data suggest that the 85-95K and 60-66K molecular weight species represent platelet membrane Clq binding sites, and that these sites may form weak, noncovalently associated complexes.

Abstract:
Abstract The micromix (MMX) combustion concept is a DLN gas turbine combustion technology designed for high hydrogen content fuels. Multiple non-premixed miniaturized flames based on jet in cross-flow (JICF) are inherently safe against flashback and ensure a stable operation in various operative conditions. The objective of this paper is to investigate the influence of pressure on the micromix flame with focus on the flame initiation point and the NOx emissions. A numerical model based on a steady RANS approach and the Complex Chemistry model with relevant reactions of the GRI 3.0 mechanism is used to predict the reactive flow and NOx emissions at various pressure conditions. Regarding the turbulence-chemical interaction, the Laminar Flame Concept (LFC) and the Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) are compared. The numerical results are validated against experimental results that have been acquired at a high pressure test facility for industrial can-type gas turbine combustors with regard to flame initiation and NOx emissions. The numerical approach is adequate to predict the flame initiation point and NOx emission trends. Interestingly, the flame shifts its initiation point during the pressure increase in upstream direction, whereby the flame attachment shifts from anchoring behind a downstream located bluff body towards anchoring directly at the hydrogen jet. The LFC predicts this change and the NOx emissions more accurately than the EDC. The resulting NOx correlation regarding the pressure is similar to a non-premixed type combustion configuration.
