Abstract:
Abstract: In Science and Health (1875), Christian Science founder Mary Baker Eddy (1821–1910) discouraged followers from reading “nauseous fiction,” that is, “[n]ovels, remarkable only for their exaggerated pictures, impossible ideals, and specimens of depravity” (195). This essay examines Eddy’s views on fiction alongside Christian Science novels written around 1900 by followers such as Clara Louise Burnham, Mrs. Georgie Sheldon, and Katherine Yates. Eddy tentatively supported these authors’ literary productions but refused to grant them the endorsement of The Christian Science Publishing Society. Had Eddy endorsed their fictions, she might have attracted more followers and strengthened her religion’s place in literary history.

Abstract:
After the passing in 1910 of Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the rapidly increasing Christian Science movement, the governing Christian Science Board of Directors of The Mother Church in Boston faced the daunting task of unifying the sometimes unruly and overly exuberant members of a faith noted for its efforts to reintroduce healing to the religious scene. This essay demonstrates that over the next fifteen years the Directors skillfully consolidated their authority and so established centralized control over the fastest-growing religious group in the United States. Divisive litigation between the Directors and the independent-minded Trustees of the Christian Science Publishing Society, 1919–1921, was resolved in favor of the Directors and so provided the capstone for their efforts to bring order to the new faith. In their actions, the Directors often followed business and societal practices, as a means of attaining routinization of charisma.

Johnson, Kathleen Carlton Ph D. "A Comparison of the Feminist Theological Positions of Mary Baker Eddy and Rosemary Radford Ruether." Diss., 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1143.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to compare the feminist principles of two American Christian women, Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) and Rosemary Radford Ruether (b. 1936-). Although separated by one hundred years, they are both considered to be Christian Feminists in the sense that they have both tried to extend women's voice into the male world of religion. Further they compliment each other in the struggle and opportunity they see for Women in the Church. Mary Baker Eddy, founder of Christian Science, was dedicated to "equality" of the sexes in her Church. . Despite Eddy's insistence on "equality", she was more interested in her Church as a healing institution rather than in a Church that was known for its Feminist principles. Rosemary Radford Ruether is a contemporary academic whose writings have become the standard texts for female theologians. She has written with outstanding scholarship on the androcentricism in the Christian Church.
