Abstract:
To mark Edgar H. Schein’s 90th birthday, a metalogue between him and David Coghlan took place to explore selected themes of their shared organization development scholarship. A metalogue is a reflective dialogue where the mode of conversation reflects the topic being explored. The themes explored are interiority, a philosophy of practical knowing, and inquiring in the present tense. The aim of the article is both celebratory and exploratory, with the latter seeking to offer readers insights from the metalogue on some core themes in the exercise of the applied behavioral science of organization development and to advance the notion of metalogue as an approach to shared inquiry.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Career Orientation Inventory model proposed by Edgar Schein is one of the most discussed methods for identifying individuals’ career orientations. However, there are several gaps related to its implementation for developing countries using factor analysis and digital open access data. We conducted exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis for a sample of 116 employees of a contact center in Colombia to test whether there were significant differences among career anchors (CAs) and gender, educational attainment, or age. The results show: a different number of factors from those proposed by Schein; variances in security/stability and managerial competence CAs concerning gender and educational attainment; and lifestyle is not the dominating CA in women.

Abstract:
Abstract Using a phenomenological methodology, this research study examines the phenomenon of organizational culture through the perceptions of those who experience it. Rather than studying how organizational culture affects organizational behavior and success, the researchers focus on employee perceptions of culture as a consequence of experiences with managerial behaviors as personal enactments of culture. The notion of personal enactments is drawn from the work of Edgar Schein. Schein [1985] has identified three levels of organizational culture: artifacts, values and beliefs. Among artifacts, Schein identifies the personal enactments of organizational values by senior managers as one of the more important. The researchers derived the data describing these personal enactments from 20 volunteer subjects reporting in self-administered questionnaires their experiences with managerial behaviors. Respondent perceptions are described in their own words, conveying their understandings, feelings, emotions and behaviors. Responses are categorized into units of relevant meaning, organized into clusters of similar meaning and then into themes. From these themes the researchers draw some insights and understanding of how system actors both live and experience culture in an organizational setting.

Wall, Michael. "Understanding the values of Christian organisations : a case study of 'Across' (1972-2005) using the organisational culture theory of Edgar Schein." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2014. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/15773/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the research question: Is Schein’s theory useful for understanding the values of Christian organisations? The research method used is a case study of ‘Across’. Across is a Christian mission organisation working in South Sudan, which was founded in 1972 after the Addis Ababa Agreement brought to an end the First Sudanese Civil War (1955-1972). Schein’s theory of organisational culture states that ‘the essence of a group's culture is its pattern of shared, basic taken-for-granted assumptions’. In this thesis these ‘basic assumptions’ are referred to by using the term organisational values. According to Schein organisational values manifest themselves at the level of ‘observable artifacts’ and ‘shared espoused values’. Schein then sees that the task of the researcher is to ‘decipher’ these two elements so as to identify the actual, underlying organisational values. After reflecting theologically on the appropriateness of using such a theory in a Christian context the research method then leads to a two stage process being followed. Firstly, to analyse the organisational values of Across from the founding of Across in 1972 until 2005, when the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983-2005) came to an end. The steps in this first stage of the process are to identify the actual organisational values of Across, to look at the factors that caused these values to emerge in Across, and then to track how significant an influence these organisational values were on the organisational behaviour of Across. The Across organisational values identified and selected for study can be summarised in the terms: partnering; integrating (integral mission); focusing on ‘the South’, and identifying with the Sudanese. The second stage in the process is to evaluate how useful Schein’s theory has been in understanding Across, and to assess whether Schein’s theory would therefore be useful in understanding other Christian organisations. The conclusion of this research is that Schein’s theory of organisational culture is useful in understanding the values of Christian organisations, and that this understanding can enable the leaders of Christian organisations to lead more effectively.

Cook, Lisa C. "That's a Wrap! The Organizational Culture and Characteristics of Successful Film Crews." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2012. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5171.

Abstract:
This study seeks to determine through survey research what characteristics film production crews possess that makes them so successful as an organization. The factors of age, gender, years of professional experience and education level were tested for their significance on how the respondents view their culture. Hofstede's six dimensions of organizational culture survey questions were rewritten to be applicable to the freelance film crew sample. The presentation of findings focuses on the resultant organizational profile of a film production crew, the workplace values of this group and the influence that the education level of the participants had on responses. The data presented here are valuable for organizational culture scholars, management scholars and those interested in applying the successful techniques of the film production crew to other business organizations.

Abstract:
Drew Pearson carried on a four-year campaign against the Red-baiting Joe McCarthy that ended with the senator’s censure. For Pearson, their clash caused the loss of his radio and television sponsors, and a substantial cut in his income, along with a physical beating by McCarthy. Since the senator had made himself a good source, the “Merry-Go-Round” treated him well until his speech in Wheeling, West Virginia, accusing the State Department of harboring known Communists. Pearson rebutted these charges and devoted numerous columns to McCarthy’s irresponsible accusations. He also targeted McCarthy’s young aides, Roy Cohn and G. David Schine. The column’s reports that Schine had evaded military service led to his being drafted. Cohn’s efforts to win special privileges for Private Schine then precipitated the Army-McCarthy hearings. Pearson’s stand against McCarthyism also caused his permanent estrangement from FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover.
