Full textFar from being exhaustive, this thesis presents a first attempt to a more cohesive and comprehensive understanding of the Arab modal system of a period of time spanning about five centuries. One aim of this research is, following Amnon Shiloah, "to leave once and for all, the legend of lethargy" and remove the clause of "stagnation" and "dark ages" long attached to this epoch. It appears through the pages of this research that the modal system never lost its liveliness. On the contrary, historical, philological, systemic and semiotic studies conducted during this thesis show the presence of a thread that binds, from one end to the other, the tradition of the thirteenth century to that of the nineteenth century

Full textThe Ps.-Aristotelian treatise Περὶ θαυμασίων ἀκουσμάτων (De mirabilibus auscultationibus), a collection of 178 brief chapters dealing with a wide range of topics, has been transmitted to us in little more than 20 Greek manuscripts, copied between the XIIth and the early decades of the XVIth century. The present study aims to reconstruct the relations between all the extant witnesses in view of a new edition of the text, which will finally substitute the one established by Immanuel Bekker in 1831: to this end all manuscripts have been collated afresh and studied in detail from a palaeographical and codicological point of view. The main results of our research may be summarized as follow: 1. The direct tradition of the text can be divided in three main branches (αβγ); the first two families, however, seem to be closely related and it is possible to infer the existence of a common ancestor (ψ) linking these branches of the stemma. 2. After a careful eliminatio codicum descriptorum, only 7 manuscripts turned out to be independent witnesses: only these Greek manuscripts should therefore be retained for the constitution of the text. The study also includes some preliminary observations on the text of the extant Latin translations (the one by Bartholomew of Messina, XIIIth century, and the later Latin paraphrase by Antonio Beccaria, XVth century) and on the fragments of the medieval translation by Leontius Pilatus, preserved only in brief quotations by other authors (mainly Boccaccius and Domenico Silvestri). A section of the work is consecrated to the study of the most ancient indirect tradition (testimonia) and the early printed editions of the text (from 1497/98 up to the XVIIth century). The dissertation is concluded by a new edition of the Greek text, with an Italian translation, and a philological commentary

Full textThe “chanson de geste” Guibert d'Andrenas, included in the cycle of Guillaume d'Orange, is known through five manuscripts, two from the great cycle (B. M. , ROYAL 20 D XI and B. N. , FR. 24369) and three from the little one (B. M. , ROYAL 20 B XIX, B. M. , HARLEYAN 1321, and B. N. , NOUV. ACQ. FR. 6298, of which fragments only remain). Two previous editions of this “chanson de geste” are available, each of them based upon the B. M. , ROYAL 20 B XIX manuscript. The new edition relies on the B. M. , ROYAL 20 D XI manuscript. The revised text is presented with variants, notes, a substantial though not exhaustive glossary, and an index of names inventorying all the occurrences of names from the selected manuscript. The text is preceded by an introduction comprising the following: a study of the manuscripts (description, classification, selection of one manuscript, revision of the text), a linguistic study of the selected manuscript, a study of versification, an analysis of the poem, and a literary study (which aims to situate this work within the cycle, especially in relation to the “narbonnais”, and bring out its literary characteristics). Full textThe sermons of Ademar of Chabannes (989-1034), Ms Berlin, Phillipps 1664 (f. 68-170), which are given in their first critical publication, bear witness to the eleventh century upheavals, and allow one to evoke the hardships of the Peace of God in Aquitaine. They are also a testimony of a man who set great store by a church beyond reproach, precursor of the « gregorian » reform to come. As autographs, they enable one to study a man who is in the act of composing. Such a transparent material, through its advances and its « remorse », gives us an insight into the work of a controversial person who is hard to grasp. The most famous side of his activity is his involvement in the defence of the apostolicity of Saint Martial, blending personal interests, abbatial prestige and financial consequences. Thus, Ademar set about developing frantically a corpus of authorities : the Sermones in concilio are a recomposition of « Pseudo-Isidorus ». Some subjects for studying have emerged, besides the obsession of Ademar for the apostolicity of saint Martial : pax and caritas, science and the meaning of numbers, the relationship of the copist with the auctoritas and the origin, the respective positions of the author and the audience, the defence of the Church, the legend on Mahomet. These sermons, which were meant for a personal reading and edification/instruction were not preached : they were too long and looked rather like a collection, they cannot be always called « sermons ». The first use of the statistical methods concerning the lexical analysis shows its relevance to specify the characters of the writing and the framework of Ademar's thought, and makes the social structures stand out

This work, born in southern Germany in the second quarter of the XIIth century and then spread across Europe, was transmitted by about fifty manuscripts. Using late-antiquity commentaries (Servius, Fulgentius), scholia about classical authors, and medieval works (Remigius of Auxerre), the treatise offers, in a constructed form illustrated by numerous citations, a succession of studies about various gods and heroes of classical mythology. It proposes historical, physical and moral explanations that can justify, in the Christians' eyes, the reading of Latin works, especially poetry

Full text"The Against Nature" manuscript, kept in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (n. A. Fr. 15 ; microfilm M4608), is the only known trace of the pre-editorial phase of the novel, published in may 1884. With its addenda, deletion, textual variations, in the margins and unfinished attempts, this draft richly conveys the writer's craftsmanship. This critical edition is intended to facilitate comparisons with the published text. Indeed, although the novel's content is essentially present in this hand-written version, some changes may initially appear to be of nature pertaining solely to detail (such as the examples of "Des Esseintes" nightmare and the extracts from chapter IX on his former mistresses, studied in the annex) however, they do more the improve the novel's style or provide nuances : the alter its structure and plot. Our introduction thus illustrates that "Against Nature" doesn’t represent so much a break from the Naturalist movement as a distancing from the Masters : Zola and even Baudelaire. From this oscillation between filiation and emancipation, a particular style is born. One which Huysmans would refer to as a "spiritualistic naturalism" in The Damned (1891). Against Nature provides a mise-en-abyme of experimentation : the protagonist's complete isolation and his attempt to ignore time - the times in which he lives as well the time which passes with the changing of the seasons and the evolution of his neurosis-end in failure, symbolized by the sudden burst of heat and the arrival of the doctor. A nosgraphy of neurosis, "Against nature", which is obsessed with the sacred, even if subverted, is also a nosography of conversion

In the introduction part, i suggest a definition for "baile" in the 16th and 17th centuries, then i explain the remarks on the transcription and on the edition. Next, i suggest a transcription for the first thirty "bailes" of the manuscript, metric pattern and critical notes for each of them as well. Full textDating back to the second half of the 12th century, the epic poem of Aiol has been handed down to us through a single manuscript (Paris, BNF fr. 25516). With the objective of forming an artificial “Cycle de Saint Gille,” the “chanson” of the adventures of the young Aiol was transcribed in the same manuscript with the “chanson” of Elie de Saint-Gille. Except for the prologue (consisting of alexandrines), the text is composed of two more or less equal parts, the first containing essentially decasyllabic lines (with the caesura after the 6th syllable), the second alexandrines. In the first part of the poem, Aiol’s father, Elie, has pacified the kingdom of France, but nevertheless been sent into exile. The man responsible for this act is none other than Elie’s own brother-in-law (and Charlemagne’s son), the Emperor Louis, who has succumbed to the advice of the traitorous Macaire. Thanks to the heroic deeds of Aiol, Elie’s former dignity at the royal court of France will eventually be restored and the traitor Macaire will be thrown into prison. However, before achieving these feats in the first part of the poem, Aiol abducts Mirabel, the daughter of a potential foe of Louis, the Saracen king of Pampelune, Mibrien. In the second part of the poem, Macaire, who has escaped from Louis’ jail, captures Aiol and Mirabel in the midst of their wedding festivities. Subsequently, during the young couple’s lengthy imprisonment, Mirabel gives birth to twin brothers. From this time onwards, the text is composed of a succession of more romantic elements, such as secret imprisonment(s), separations, incursions into southern and western countries, struggles against pagans and recognitions. And these in turn lead to a last battle near Pampelune, the elimination of Macaire (who is quartered) and the satisfying submission of Mibrien. Beyond providing information about the manuscript and the two 19th century editions, the present ‘thèse’ proposes a study of the ‘picard’ language of the scribe (the text being considered as the work of a ‘remanieur” and not of the first author), analyses of the literary features of the text, a summary of its content with a diagram exposing the relationships between the protagonists, and a map for geographical locations and itineraries. Critical notes, an exhaustive index of names and a glossary will complete this edition. The transcription attempts to maintain as close a reading as possible of/to the manuscript version. Corrections and additions are added thus only to facilitate direct reading of the text

Full textCharles-Simon Favart (1710-1792) was a prominent figure in the theatre, in the 18th century in France and in Europe. He wrote and composed a lot of works and contributed to the evolution of vaudevilles towards a new genre of opera-comique. Many comments have been written about him yet many gray areas remain. The unfortunate experiences, of which his wife, famous Madame Favart and himself were the victims, have contributed to altering the numerous accounts of their lives. By criss-crossing various documents and exploring some new manuscripts, we were able to give a fairer account of their lives. Concentrating on the beginning of Favart's career, we publish his first work, Ninus and Semiramis, which is a real fairytale written at the age of 15. Through the study of five other manuscripts written at the beginning of his career, that is two prologues, Le Génie de l'Opéra-comique, Les recrues de l'Opéra-Comique, two parodies which were censored, les Amours de Gogo, Sansonnet et Tonton and another parody, Harmonide, we analyse his drama work, except the work he wrote in collaboration. He was a skilled writer of vaudevilles. We publish his Clef de vaudevilles as the likely initiator of the Caveau moderne. We hereby publish the complete libretto of Harmonide
