Schulte, William. "An attitudinal study of Gannett newspaper editors about journalism graphics." Virtual Press, 2003. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1260626.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the research was to look at how editors at Gannett, America's largest newspaper chain, perceive the role of journalism graphics and graphic artists in the newsroom.Nineteen editors from newspapers of various circulation sizes, participated from across the country. They sorted Q statements that covered areas related to journalism graphics as: use of color, balancing graphics with other content, graphics relationship with design, reader needs, and how graphics serve literacy. An analysis of the Q statements collected for this study showed two distinct factor types. They were identified by this researcher as the Communitarians and the Zealots. The Communitarians were characterized as trying to balance graphics with other aspects of journalism such as story, photo and design in an attempt to put the reader first. They were unwilling to elevate graphics to a necessity in presenting a story. The Communitarians saw graphics as one tool among many to conveyinformation. The Zealots saw graphics as an absolute necessity for any worthy journalistic endeavor. They saw graphics as the answer to attracting young readers, to serving a population with literacy issues, and to enhancing any work the newspaper is doing. The Zealots rejected statements that did not show graphics in the most positive way.Two camps emerged within the Gannett ranks regarding journalism graphics. The Zealots hold on to the allure of color and graphics made popular by USA Today in the 1980s and early 1990s. Communitarians acknowledged that graphics are an effective tool, but considered the practice of similar importance with other methods of conveying information.
Department of Journalism

Gunter, Heather M. "A Q study of Indiana religion editors' attitudes toward religion news." Virtual Press, 2000. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1177975.

Full text
Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine what attitudes Indiana religion editors and reporters hold toward religion news and what attitude patterns exist among them.Using Q Methodology, this study explored the attitudes of religion reporters and editors at 22 Indiana daily newspapers. Newspapers included in the study had a religion reporter or editor who covered local religion news. The concourse for the study was developed by using statements from Ranly's 1977 study and from articles from trade and scholarly journals. The Q-sample included a total of 54 statements related to personal religious beliefs, the state of religion news and working as a journalist. The subjects completed a questionnaire, which included questions about their professional and religious background, and interviews were conducted with the subjects. The typical Indiana religion reporter was: a Caucasian female who had worked as a journalist for less than 10 years, who had held the position of religion reporter for less than five years, who held a bachelor's degree in journalism or English, and who had at least one college religion course. She had exposure to religion while growing up, is now involved in religious activities, and attends church weekly.QMETHOD software was used to tabulate the Q-sorts, and the investigator determined that two factors could be drawn out from the results. Hypothetical reporter types were labeled as "moderate" and "traditional." There was a high correlation between the two factors. Moderates were more news-oriented in their approach. They believe that religion news should be covered like any other news topic. Traditionalists were more faith-oriented. They believe that their faith and their jobs are not conflicting.
Department of Journalism

Podos, Marnie Alexis. "'A Story of Words, Opinions and a few Emotions': Leonard Woolf as Editor, Publisher, and Critic." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.491212.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines a trio of Leonard Woolf’s professional pursuits: his work as a literary editor, as an independent publisher, and as a critic. It seeks to elucidate Woolf’s cultural significance, which has been mostly neglected, through an assessment of his critical influence on the intellectual climate of twentieth-century Britain. Supporting evidence is drawn from Woolf’s published and unpublished correspondence, his autobiography, his weekly column for the Nation and Athenaeum (1923-1930), the literary careers of his authors, and a range of works published by the Hogarth Press. The introduction underscores Woolf’s critical legacy and situates him at the centre of an illustrious web of novelists, essayists, and reviewers who worked with him. Chapter One examines Woolf’s general approach to editing and his relationships with specific contributors to the Nation and Athenaeum. Chapter Two addresses the stratification of the literary taste in post-war Britain through a close analysis of Woolf’s critically overlooked column, “The World of Books”. It compares his articles to essays written by Virginia Woolf during the same period on corresponding subject matter. Chapter Three examines Woolf’s pragmatic approach to the business of publishing and his creative vision for the Hogarth Press. Chapter Four offers case studies of three authors who benefited from Woolf’s guidance. Chapter Five addresses Woolf’s innovation as a pamphleteer. Concentrating on the Hogarth Essays, the first Hogarth Series, it examines Woolf’s publication of critical works on issues of aesthetic, political, and social importance to his generation. Chapter Six examines the Hogarth Lectures on Literature and the Hogarth Letters, focusing on their instructive value, and suggests that, collectively, the Hogarth Series are a vital contribution to literary modernism. The conclusion argues that Woolf deserves to be recognised as a cultural conductor of the twentieth century.

Simes, Wyno. "Die historiese debat oor keasionisme en evolusie, met spesifieke verwysing na 'n seleksie van briewe in Die Burger (1999-2002)." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/17407.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The debate about the validity of evolution versus creationism started long ago when Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species. Yet today the debate about this issue still engenders a lot of controversy – not only in South Africa, but also, and especially, in the United States. This study investigates articles and letters to the editor in an Afrikaans daily newspaper, Die Burger, over a certain period, and will look at the arguments for and against evolution and creationism. The fact that creationists – despite so much evidence to the contrary – pursue a form of pseudoscience by (sometimes) interpreting the Bible literally, and, amongst other things, deny the real age of the earth. There has never been an in-depth look at the public debate about evolution versus creationism in a South African newspaper. The purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth investigation into this particular debate in the media, with specific reference to correspondence in the letters pages of Die Burger, with regard to the possible influence which the debate about evolution and creationism in an Afrikaans daily newspaper might have on people’s consciousness regarding modern science. It will also explore how some individuals, often conservative believers, still cling to ancient viewpoints and which have repeatedly been disproved by science.

Abstract:
Both popular and scholarly observers have portrayed New Orleans as a city both supported and burdened by its image as a diverse cultural other within the American South, historically tolerant of certain sins of the flesh. This image has been used by proponents and critics alike in order to push their respective agenda regarding the Crescent City. This thesis will not seek to discredit this image that is based largely on fact. However, using Prohibition as a case study, this thesis will use letters to the editor to uncover attitudes of New Orleanians in opposition to this reputation to reveal alternative and historically silenced voices of New Orleans, since for instance people of a certain age, gender, or ethnicity were silenced in the halls of government. This paper will reveal the opinions of New Orleanians regarding Prohibition and what these opinions can tell us about New Orleans’s image.

Kovalyova, Natalia Vasilyevna. "Rhetorical markers of democratization." 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/11664.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was motivated by a variety of democratic experience in the world that interchangeably perplexes and inspires students of politics. To understand the processes by which democracies emerge, this study was launched to examine new democracies from a discursive perspective. Four main questions guided the inquiry: (1) Is there a rhetorical/discursive counterpart to the process of democratization? (2) If so, what are the rhetorical features and markers of democratic changes? (3) What specific discursive practices correlate with growth and/or decline of democracy? and (4) What practical value might there be to having a more sensitive measure of democratic growth and/or decline? To answer these questions, a critical discourse analysis was conducted on two genres of Russian public discourse juxtaposing lay (letters to the editor) and elite (editorials) voices in three national periodicals during four election seasons between 1996 and 2008. The analysis of lay discourse revealed (a) that ordinary Russians enjoy expressing their opinions, (b) that they are argumentative, (c) that their repertoire of political voices is rather small, and (d) that their discussions are gradually sliding toward trivial matters. These findings portrayed a public that is attentive to public affairs and speaks out in a forum. Elite voices, on the other hand, were found (e) to be mesmerized by politics, (f) to think of the political world as detached from ordinary life, and (g) to envision the audience of ironic bystanders. Together, these findings pointed to a conclusion that ordinary Russians are rarely summoned either to renew democracy or to improve upon it. Consequently, they rarely identify themselves as true democrats, although many of their discursive practices resemble those that are thought of as a staple of the democratic public sphere.
text

Abstract:

Abstract:
Journalism is not a perfect art, a perfect form. News editors are faced everyday with myriad stories. They have to make instant judgements, important stories fall by the wayside and are ignored. Many other things operate to take our interest, which is in Palestine and Israel, out of focus for a while. But the main point I want to make is that when the story is covered, as it is from time to time now, and as it used to be more consistently, it should be covered properly. And my case is that over the past 20 years now, the BBC particularly, but the other broadcast media as well, and to some extent, newspapers which had been sympathetic to the Palestinian cause or Palestinian legitimate aspirations for equal rights, have not done the job properly. As to the BBC, I say this not because I am anti-BBC, and not because I’m a resentful ex-employee. I still admire the BBC. And I think the institution should remain. But it does not do the Israel/Palestine job properly. It listens to the voices of government and it takes into account the voices of pressure groups instead of listening to public opinion, which as we know, steadily over the past 25 years or so, has moved away from open support of Israel and taken, especially in Britain and in Western Europe, the Palestinian cause seriously.

Abstract:
Abstract Opinion articles (which may be called Viewpoints, Commentaries, Perspectives, or other terms) are commonly published in biomedical journals and often address timely clinical topics or issues involving policy, law, or ethics. This chapter provides guidelines and suggestions for writing informative and compelling opinion manuscripts. As explained in the chapter, these articles may discuss topics for which there is insufficient evidence and present the authors’ point of view, particularly for situations in which readers need to rely on the experience or advice of experts. Opinion articles may or may not be solicited by the editors, and usually are not linked to another article in the journal. Authors of opinion manuscripts should ensure than the manuscript is evidence based and discusses both sides of an issue as much as possible, and they should be familiar with the journal and its format for opinion articles.

Abstract:
Abstract Bina Venkataraman, the editorial page editor for the Boston Globe, argues in this chapter that opinion journalism plays a powerful role in shaping public dialogues and decisions. Great opinion writing provokes readers to think in new ways and to question or affirm their own views on a subject, Venkataraman notes, and it should draw on all three persuasive modes: ethos, logos, and pathos. Counterarguments should be directly engaged, and the values and trade-offs inherent in taking the writer’s position should be wrestled with. But most importantly, in a media ecosystem rife with Twitter tirades and broadcast punditry, opinion journalism backed by rigorous reporting and thoughtful analysis can still rise above the din and become both a meaningful endeavor for any writer and a great public service.

Abstract:
This chapter chronicles the effort by white editors in South Carolina to battle northern public opinion supporting civil rights reform in the South. As the black community’s interpretations of public events received greater attention in the mainstream white press, Charleston editor Thomas R. Waring Jr. led the campaign to break through the so-called “paper curtain” that he claimed northern media used to silence the voices of white southerners who supported segregation. As 1960 approached, Waring and and political reporter William D. Workman Jr., worked to build a new political home for white racial conservatives in a revamped Republican Party. In 1962, Workman left journalism to run for the US Senate as a Republican. The effort failed narrowly, yet his campaign signaled the arrival of the conservative Republicans as a new force in Deep South politics.

Abstract James Crichton-Browne retired from the post of Superintendent of the Wakefield Asylum in 1875, and he was then appointed the Lord Chancellor’s Visitor in Lunacy. His successor was not willing to continue publishing the West Riding Asylum Reports, and there was no obvious medium in Great Britain suitable for representing neurological opinions. In 1878, under the joint editorship of J.C. Bucknill, James Crichton-Browne, David Ferrier and John Hughlings Jackson, the prestigious quarterly journal Brain was founded. The first number appeared in April 1878. To begin with, Crichton-Browne did most of the editorial work. Dr. A. de Watteville came to assist the harassed Editors in 1880; in 1883, he joined the Editorial Board and was appointed Acting Editor in 1885.

Abstract:
Abstract When trying to identify the polemical target of Discours de métaphysique § 3,where Leibniz rebuts the thesis of those who ‘believe that God could have made things better’, editors and commentators are unanimous in identifying Malebranche as the author who would have sustained that God could have done better than He did with the creation of this world. This conviction is not shaken by the doubts which might arise from the variants in the text, which these same editors accurately note and which seem quickly to lead one in a completely different direction. ‘Nor can I approve the opinion of certain moderns’ writes Leibniz in the final version of the Discours, correcting an earlier version which reads: ‘nor can I approve the opinion of certain scholastics’. And again: ‘I also believe that a great many passages from Sacred Scripture and the holy fathers will be found favoring my opinion, but scarcely any will be found favoring the opinion of these moderns. ’This time the ‘moderns’ substitutes for the ‘new scholastics’ from the previous version. In the final version of the Discours,Leibniz has rendered his critique more general, alluding to all those in recent times who held that God could have created a better world.

In XII Congress of the ICLA. Georgian Comparative Literature Association, 2025. https://doi.org/10.62119/icla.4.9028.

Abstract:
Goal of any type of censorship (quite often – pseudo-goal) is protecting society. In a totalitarian state it gains different essence and scale. Its main task becomes protecting the ideology of a totalitarian state and punishing its opposers in different forms. Caucasus Censorship Committee (1848-1906) was the main mechanism for the political and ideological control of Georgia and other nations of the Caucasus, which were part of the XIX century Russian Empire. The control mainly concerned the cultural-educational sphere, as other state institutions were under the Empire anyway. Responsibility for the national-liberating tasks in Georgia in XIX century was taken by Georgian literature and press, therefore, censorship fought against them, killing the free opinion at its appearance. Censorship reviewed any kind of texts by Georgian writers, critics, playwrights and persons working working in Georgian space in general – be it fiction, critical-publicist or scientific texts – and it was at the decision of censorship to publish, remake or to prohibit them. Not only creative freedom was restricted, but there was also pressure on national and public opinion. Restrictions were expressed in taking out or remaking free pinion from an article or fiction work, its distortion; as punishment, a magazine could be closed down, an issue of a magazine could be banned or an editor could even be arrested. Repression censorship banned for prolonged period of time such well-known Georgian periodicals as, Tsiskari, Iveria, Droeba, Imedi and others; or even closed them down permanently. This happened to the first satire-humor magazine Khumara (Joker). Only one issue was published and the magazine was closed down; its editor Akaki Tsereteli was arrested for mocking a public servant… In parallel with restrictions and punishments, Georgian literature, criticism, publicist work gradually transferred to defense regime and did not obey the ideological-political course of the Empire. Fiction, critical-publicist, scientific texts were being veiled, coded, disguised with symbolic-allegorical images; this is well confirmed by all the materials found in the texts by Georgian classics and non-classic writers and justifying statements sent by editors to censors. Goal of the article is to show, from the work by the Caucasus Censorship Committee, the interrelation of censors and editor, based on the decrees, reports by censors and justifying statements by editors.

Abstract:
Abstract:
. This article is a continuation of the idea about developing a gaming prototype generator from natural language text. Game balance theme, which mentioned in previous authors' papers, fully opens up from theoretical and practice standpoints. Many expert opinions and definitions were analyzed to understand the identity of that problem. As a result, a full understanding of the problem was formed and challenges were listed, which exists in this direction. The purpose of the research is automation of game-designers routine in the prototyping stage. For this, the problem of generation of game balance from text documents is solved, so a number of scientific papers are considered, which offer algorithms, optimizing and automating approaches and computer games balance. The functionality of the dynamic balance editor Machinations is presented in detail, and the principle of operations is illustrated. To check the availability of approaches in the overall collection of the prototype generator work, a number of experiments were provided. They prove effective work with exhaustive diagrams and saves important development team resources. In addition, a particular problem of formalization and visualizing connection between gameplay and plot was solved, which is justified by the context dependence of the game balance. In conclusion, plans for the further development of a full-featured tool for the game scriptwriters and designers are given. As a conclusion, we state that automatic correction of the game balance is possible as well as its generation based on text.

Pérez, Rigoberto, and Ana Jesús López. "Economic data analysis with ADE+. Summarizing presential and virtual experiences." In Statistics and the Internet. International Association for Statistical Education, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.52041/srap.03308.

Abstract:
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have introduced main changes in the dissemination and treatment of the statistical information, also affecting the teaching and learning methods. The universities must currently face the challenge of ensuring that technological innovation really serves education, adapting their degrees and teaching methods to the new social demands and making an efficient use of the ICT facilities. These requirements are especially clear in the field of Statistics, where the access to Internet statistical servers and the availability of statistical software provide a wide spread of teaching resources. However, the election of a suitable sofware for teaching purposes is not easy, especially in the case of the introductory courses, where professional applications does not seem to be adequate. Since we have also detected some important objections related to the use of spreadsheets, we have developed the software ADE+ as an easy–to-use didactical tool organized in three different areas (a text editor, a spreadsheet-like data table and an object container) allowing a comprehensive treatment of the statistical information. Our experience with ADE+ has proved to be satisfactory for students and teachers in both presential and virtual education. In the case of presential courses, computer-assisted sessions are periodically organized, dividing the classgroup into small workteams. Although these sessions are supervised by a profesor, the active participation of students and the group interaction is highly encouraged. After some years of presential experience, we have developed the ADE+ website, (http://www.aulanet.uniovi.es/ade+) which has proved to be extremely useful, allowing the students to download updated versions of this software and providing an on-line user guide and some example workfiles. A new step of this experience started with the implementation of the online course “Economic Data Analysis” included as a free-election subject in AulaNet, (virtual campus of the University of Oviedo) and also in the Shared Virtual Campus of the so-called G9 Group of universities. The practical contents of this course are fully based on the ADE+ software, including solved problems and proposed exercises. Since the subject aims to give a realistic view of economic information, most of the practical material is based on actual data, extracted from some well- known statistical servers such as the Spanish Statistical Institute (http://www.ine.es), United Nations (http://www.un.org), or the World Bank (http://www.worldbank.org). An outstanding characteristic of “Economic Data Analysis” is the online examination, where ADE+ plays a main role. To end, we must stress that the use of ADE+ in both presential and virtual courses has lead to satisfactory results according not only to the academic results but also to the teachers and students opinions. The practical contents and the software ADE+ have obtained high average punctuations together with low Pearsons coefficients, confirming the representativeness of these answers.
