Abstract:

Handbook of Higher Education in Japan. Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463724678.

Full text
Abstract:
This Handbook tells the story in 25 chapters of how Japan’s HE system has become what it is now, ending with a very tentative glimpse into the rest of the 21st century. A variety of themes are covered by scholars—both established, senior figures and younger researchers with their own fresh look at current circumstances. Chapters that concentrate on governance look at the distinction between "national," "public," and "private" institutions; others consider important topics such as internationalization, student recruitment, faculty mobility. More innovative topics include "Women of Color Leading in Japanese Higher Education." All provide copious references to other authorities, but rather than just toe the conventional line they include opinions and proposals that may be contentious or even revolutionary. The editor provides an overview of the subject and its treatment in an Introduction. -- Rights Statement: Amsterdam University Press has exclusive rights to sell the print Handbook in all territories excluding Japan, Taiwan and Korea. --

Dickerson, Donna L. The Reconstruction Era. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216006015.

Full text
Abstract:
As the sole purveyors of news and opinion, Reconstruction-era newspapers bent and spindled American public opinion with little regard for independent journalism and great regard for party politics. In other words, the newspapers of the Reconstruction era served political rather than social needs. The issues facing the nation were momentous, and opinions on how to deal with the problems were vigorously presented and defended. Using editorials, letters, essays, and news reports that appeared throughout the country's print media, this book reveals how editors, politicians, and other Americans used the press to influence opinion from 1865 to 1877. Issues such as civil rights, constitutional amendments, a presidential impeachment, Indian wars, immigration, and political corruption dominated the newspapers and gave journalists opportunities to advance their agendas. Each of the 30 chapters of this book introduces an event or issue and includes news articles representing opposing sides of the issue as it affected Americans. Readers can use the introductory essays and primary source documents to understand how newspapers and magazines presented vital events and issues to Americans of the day. This invaluable reference source presents hard-to-find opinions in the words of those who wrote them.

Fontanarosa, Phil B., Annette Flanagin, and Philip Greenland, eds. Principles of Scientific Writing and Biomedical Publication. Oxford University PressNew York, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780197783030.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Principles of Biomedical Writing and Publication is a practical, comprehensive, state-of-the-art guide designed to enhance understanding of the principles of scientific publication, promote improved writing and manuscript preparation skills, and help navigate the seemingly complex pathway from manuscript submission, through peer review and revision, to successful publication. The book presents common issues that arise during the scientific publishing process; describes the ethical and practical aspects related to manuscript preparation, reporting research, and writing reviews and opinion articles; and guides authors on effectively interacting with journal editors. The unique feature of this book is that all contributors currently serve or have served as editors for major biomedical journals, including JAMA and the JAMA Network Journals, or have extensive experience and knowledge related to biomedical publications and information dissemination. Collectively, the authors of the 41 chapters in this book have published thousands of articles, including research reports and opinion articles, and have hundreds of “editor-years” of experience serving as editors of major journals. The authors also have been extensively involved with numerous aspects of biomedical publishing, including developing and implementing editorial policies and procedures; organizing and participating in international and national conferences and committees on peer review, scientific publishing, reporting guidelines, and biomedical information dissemination; and teaching scientific writing and publishing at academic centers and major conferences. Accordingly, the information, recommendations, and advice in this book are based on the collective insights of experienced editors and other experts in biomedical publication and will help guide the preparation of high-quality manuscripts suitable for publication in biomedical journals and demystify the scientific publication process.

Balkin, Jack M., ed. What Obergefell v. Hodges Should Have Said. Yale University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.12987/yale/9780300221558.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The authors of this book, sitting as a hypothetical Supreme Court, rewrite the famous 2015 opinion in Obergefell v. Hodges, which guaranteed same-sex couples the right to marry. In eleven incisive opinions, the authors offer the best constitutional arguments for and against the right to same-sex marriage, and debate what Obergefell should mean for the future. In addition to serving as Chief Justice of this imaginary court, the book's editor provides a critical introduction to the case. He recounts the story of the gay rights litigation that led to Obergefell, and he explains how courts respond to political mobilizations for new rights claims. The social movement for gay rights and marriage equality is a powerful example of how — through legal imagination and political struggle — arguments once dismissed as “off-the-wall” can later become established in American constitutional law.

Gardner, Jared. The American Magazine in the Early National Period. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252036705.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter recounts the struggles of publishers, printers, editors, and contributors to American magazines of the national period. It shows how the magazine occupies a liminal place at best in the history of print in the early republic. The book and the newspaper dominate far more space in the story of the print's rise, and rightly so, as the magazine seems dominated by random posturing, by armchair moralists with neoclassical pseudonyms offering their opinion on everything from fashion to dueling. It is no wonder that modern readers have favored two forms—novel and newspaper—whose genealogies are more immediately traceable into the twentieth century.

Full text
Abstract:
American newspapers redefined journalism after the Civil War by breaking away from the editorial and financial control of the Democratic and Republican parties. Smythe chronicles the rise of the New Journalism, where pegging newspaper sales to market forces was the cost of editorial independence. Successful papers in post-bellum America thrived by catering to a mass audience, which increased their circulations and raised their advertising revenues. Still active politically, independent editors now sought to influence their readers' opinions themselves rather than serve as conduits for the party line.

Full text
Abstract:
This encyclopedia brings together leading scholars to provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date resource on politics and religion ever produced. Editors in Chief Paul A. Djupe, Mark J. Rozell, and Ted G. Jelen—joined by an editorial board of associate editors (Gizem Arikan, Pazit Ben-Nun Bloom, Taylor Boas, Steven Kettell, Amy Erica Smith, and Güneş Murat Tezcür)—have assembled over 100 peer-reviewed entries. In this extensive resource, readers will find authoritative overviews of the key topics, theories, and findings in religion and politics. Social scientists have closely observed religion at multiple levels of analysis, across a long time span, and in diverse outlets. As a result, it can be difficult for new researchers and interested observers to understand the state of the field. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Politics and Religion addresses that need, and is therefore essential reading for all who seek to understand some of the most important issues and questions facing the world, including the role of regulation of religion by states, how religion is linked to civil war, whether religion is compatible with democracy, how religion structures political behavior and public opinion, how religious parties behave, and much more.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses news practice in interactive media. Instead of delivering hard-to-get news, reporters seem like just another supplier of opinion among many competing on legacy media—cable outlets, talk radio, and comedy newscasts—and online. Instead of off-stage observers in search of reality, editors seem to play on-stage roles making social knowledge. The persistent clinging to the idea and markers of realism also disguised the growing modernism of U.S. news, which was losing the advantage that realism once provided. The modern vision of news never quite reflected public intelligence or engagement with news media from the Progressive Era to the crowd-sourcing era. Somehow the social definition of the situation made a world that seems less welcoming to modern news even as blogs and reader comments join in interpreting it.

Rugh, William A. American Encounters with Arabs. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400610608.

Full text
Abstract:
For sixty years, U.S. government officials have conducted public diplomacy programs to try to reach Arab public opinion—to inform, educate, and understand Arab attitudes. American public affairs officers have met serious challenges in the past, but Arab public criticism of the United States has reached unprecedented levels since September 11, 2001. Polls show that much of the negative opinion of the United States, especially in the Middle East, can be traced to dissatisfaction with U.S. foreign policy. Rugh, a retired career Foreign Service officer who twice served as ambassador to countries in the region, explains how U.S. government officials have dealt with key problem issues over the years, and he recommends ways that public diplomacy can better support and enhance U.S. national interests in the Middle East. This struggle for the hearts and minds of the Arab world, so crucial to the success of American efforts in post-occupation Iraq, is carried out through broadcasting, cultural contacts, and educational and professional exchanges. Rugh describes the difference between public diplomacy and propaganda. He points out that public diplomacy uses open means of communication and is truthful. Its four main components are explaining U.S. foreign policy to foreign publics; presenting them with a fair and balanced picture of American society, culture, and institutions; promoting mutual understanding; and advising U.S. policy makers on foreign attitudes. Public diplomacy supports the traditional diplomatic functions of official business between governments. Whereas diplomats from the United States deal with diplomats of foreign governments, public affairs officers deal with opinion leaders such as media editors, reporters, academics, student leaders, and prominent intellectuals and cultural personalities. Rugh provides an up-close-and-personal look at how public affairs officers do their jobs, how they used innovation in their efforts to meet the challenges of the past, and how they continue to do so in the post-September 11 era.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the role of the newspaper, and of public opinion, in a political society that frequently described and defined itself as advanced and progressive, and which was apparently moving inexorably towards democracy. Yet while the press was often seen as crucial to this process—as a liberating, inclusive, and representative agent—it could often serve equally as a mechanism of political control and influence. Historians have written of ‘educational ideals’ and the growing professionalization of journalism, but there is clearly no simple characterization of the press. Examining how the perceived role of the press has changed over 200 years, taking account of the views of owners and editors, politicians, and readers, the chapter considers the political functions of the press and, more widely, how the so-called fourth estate has impacted on and shaped political change in modern Britain.

Abstract:
This new volume in the Shakespeare: The Critical Tradition series increases our knowledge of how Antony and Cleopatra has been received and understood by critics, editors and general readers. The volume provides, in separate sections, both critical opinions about the play across the centuries and an evaluation of their positions within and their impact on the reception of the play. The chronological arrangement of the text-excerpts engages the readers in a direct and unbiased dialogue, and the introduction offers a critical evaluation from a current stance, including modern theories and methods. Full text
Abstract:
Laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of disorders such as urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse is evolving rapidly with few resources available for clinicians. This text will act as a gold standard reference in the field of laparoscopic urogynaecological surgery. The introductory section covers the basics of laparoscopy, including patient selection, surgical set up and the prevention and management of complications. Further sections focus on different “gold standard” techniques and the procedural steps needed to perform the surgery, including chapters on colposuspension, paravaginal repair, laparoscopic hysterectomy as well as apical suspensory surgery such as sacrocolpopexy and sacrohysteropexy. The final section includes debates and opinion pieces on newer techniques as well as discussion on the use of mesh in treating pelvic organ prolapse. There is also a section addressing the current rise in robotic surgery. The editors and contributors are all experts in the field, providing an authoritative and global view on techniques. Highly illustrated, with videos demonstrating the techniques, this is an eminently practical guide to the use of laparoscopy in urogynaecology.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the prosopography of those who ‘made’ Ruz al-Yusuf, an Egyptian weekly magazine founded by the actress Fatima al-Yusuf in 1925. It addresses the presentation of an intellectual milieu through an examination of the authors who contributed to the title from 1925 to 1937, among them ‘Abbas Mahmud al-‘Aqqad, and Muhammad al-Tabi‘i, a gifted editor and journalist. A detailed study of their biographies and lived histories reveals generational similarities rooted in a particular political context and demonstrates how journalism was in the process of being defined by the aspirations, personal histories and aims of its practitioners. The second theme concerns the professionalisation of journalism and explores whether professional journalism necessarily means the development of a ‘news press’ following the Anglo-Saxon model or the French ‘opinion press’ model.

This chapter is a quick reference to common questions encountered by the practitioners of the field on regular bases. It is intended to be short, concise, and hopefully accurate. We do not provide references, tables, or figures. These belong in the chapters, and there are plenty of them. We caution readers that the opinions expressed in this chapter are those of the editors of this volume. We have relied on our combined personal experiences of more than half a century. We could have selected a thousand more questions, but we opted for a few common and recurring ones. We recognize that some of the measurements discussed here could be made just as good or even better by other imaging modalities, but our emphasis is on nuclear imaging. The nature of these questions is either technical or clinical, as it should be, and if we missed a burning question in your mind, we apologize in advance. We adopted the rule of 10-devoting 10 points to answer each question

Abstract:
Heroism is usually associated with great deeds, and heroes are regarded as superior and powerful individuals who take action. This opinion has dominated Western tradition since ancient times. At the same, the ability to bide one’s time was and is equally classed as a heroic quality because it is an ‘inner form of action’ (M. Weber). Fabius Cunctator was heroicised for tactically biding his time during the Second Punic War, as were the front-line soldiers during the First World War, who held out for so long in the trenches. Moreover, the Christian notion of salvation, the heroic, eremitical act of waiting in this life for the next, or the prophetic, messianic constellations of the 1920s also spring to mind in this context. The essays collected in this book examine ‘heroic waiting’ as a literary phenomenon. They not only provide in-depth analyses of how biding one’s time is conveyed as a heroic act, but also focus above all on how it is staged. The book’s introduction, which was written by the editors, is based on a collective set of descriptive tools with which ‘heroic waiting’ can be defined and understood in terms of its typological characteristics on the one hand and as a relational structure on the other.
