Full textThis study aims to identify and analyze referencing as a strategy in building humor in editorial cartoons. The above mentioned objectives were motivated by the observation of political cartoons regarding the mensalão scandal, in which we found the recurrence of referencing in cartoons creation process, thus revealing the writer s communicative purpose and guiding the reader in the construction of meaning. To achieve our purpose, we built up the corpus of this study with eleven cartoons from the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, selected between August and October 2012, about the judgment treated by the media as the biggest corruption case in the Brazilian political history, and we proceeded the analysis based on the referencing studies as those performed, today, in the field of texts studies in an interactional sociocognitive perspective as well as on humor studies. In this investigation, we found out that referencing builds the humorous speech through different modalities of language, allowing the construction of the subject in the cartoon review also influencing the meaning effects promoted by the written media. Moreover, we have observed the mensalão - which is the main topic of the cartoons - and we have found out through the present analysis that the subject is classified and reclassified in the discursive activity, in which the politician image is projected, thereby influencing the opinion of newspaper readers

Full textThis paper deals with the analysis of the satirical weekly O Polichinelo, published in the city of São Paulo, in 1876. From the study of the publication itself, its editorial staff, the style and the theme of its cartoons, as well as the context of the historical moment, this text seeks the relations between the weekly and that time of great political turmoil in Brazil, and, in particular, the province of São Paulo. In those days in the Second Empire, Abolition and Republican causes gained strength and became manifest through the press. The cartoon illustrated periodicals used the critical mood to spread opinions about these topics. O Polichinello, as an exponent from this press, would not be different. But what was the stance of the journal? What causes it defended? The articles and, in particular, the cartoons contained in its pages, give clues for understanding the intentions and influences behind the weekly and how it manifested in its language.
Qual seria então o posicionamento do periódico?

This study sought to analyse the discourse strategies in the editorials of the Daily Graphic newspaper as texts constructed in an African English as a Second Language (ESL) setting and the editorials of the New York Times of America as texts constructed in an Anglo-American English environment. The objective of the study was to discover the differences and the similarities that exist between the discourse strategies of the editorials of the Daily Graphic newspaper and the editorials of the New York Times. This objective is achieved by analysing five features of text. First, the rhetorical structure of the two editorials were analysed to find out the rhetorical strategies used in composing the editorials. Second, the micro-genre variation between the two editorials was examined. In addition, the thematic development of the two editorials was carried out. Also, the study investigated the rhetorical appeals preferred by the editorials from the two different socio-cultural settings. Finally, as newspaper editorials, the use of attribution was studied to find out how the editorials disclose the sources of their information to make it clear to their readers where they get their information from. The findings of the study revealed some differences and some similarities in the discourse strategies employed by the two editorials. The Daily Graphic as a newspaper published in an ESL setting in Africa exhibited the unique use of some discourse features that reflect the socio-cultural setting different from that of the New York Times as a newspaper published in the socio-cultural environment of Anglo-American English.

Full textThe satire of the cartoonist and the reasoned argumentation of the editorial writer complement each other in the spreading of opinion, in two portuguese daily newspapers, Diário de Notícias and Público. The analysis of the discourses of the editorial and of the cartoon revealed a coincidence in the way of handling the topic, the State Budget for 2013. The cartoonists and the editorial writers deny the existence of any link between the two authors, but many questions are raised, about the harmonization between the cartoon and the editorial, that go beyond this dissertation. The texts complete each other in the criticism and pass on to the public their views which contribute to the shaping of the so-called public opinion. The editorial leans on facts, argues and constructs a text with the purpose to point out solutions. The cartoon pokes fun at the same facts, distorts them, exaggerates them and transforms them to the absurd, in an incongruous text whose goal is only to make humor
