Bernasconi, Renato. "Editorial. “Trayectorias de uso” y “el objeto como productor y usuario”: dos ideas para la subversión historiográfica." Revista Diseña, no. 18 (2021): 1–9. http://dx.doi.org/10.7764/disena.18.editorial.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract: This inaugural article of the “Diverse Voices” column in the Journal of Singing begins with thoughts about how singing intersects with society and personal identities as a cultural artifact. An interview with NATS President Alexis Davis-Hazell exploring Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism (IDEA) efforts by NATS then contextualizes a brief exploration of current IDEA activities. The article concludes by outlining salient editorial biographical information and scholarly philosophies, goals for the column, teaching application ideas using IDEA resources, and a welcome message to the readership.

Abstract:
As for the Butterfly Effect, our actions resonate widely and far. A singular affordance or a city-wide tag, premeditated or not, conforms to our collective reality. But more specifically, is there something that occurs in Lisbon (and other places) that we can designate as a useful non-conformity with the norm? Taking this idea to the extreme, do our societal organizations serve as mere masks for the true anarchy of everyday life? In times of localized conflicts with global impact, from the nearly irrelevant comfort to life-threatening confrontations, what is the role of our material actions? In the realms of ideas or self-proposed solutions, what can we learn from our micro-actions? If there is indeed a common global phenomenon that emerges from mark-making as a life-standing condition, how can we interpret these marks for the sake of life? Can we generalize?

Abstract:
The word nomad, etymologically from the Greek word for pasture, evokes images of a pastoral landscape, a culture that relocates periodically, and suggests also that people's movement might occur in accordance with "rhythms of the landscape." Nomadic cultures, particularly those which survive today in the face of increasing cultural homogeneity, have long held a fascination for more settled cultures. NOMAD is not however, an anthropological investigation of differing nomadic cultures and their representation. Rather, the use of nomad as a theme for this issue provides the opportunity to conceive of the idea of nomad more broadly through themes of travel, movement, memory, displacement, imposition of boundaries and ideas about home, Diaspora and belonging. The nomad is at once the versatile intellectual, the wandering revolutionary, the environmental studies student, the cyber junky, the canoe tripper, and so on.

It is beyond unfashionable today among young evangelicals involved in theology to aspire to orthodoxy. The famous statement made by Charles Hodge about old Princeton that “a new idea never originated in this seminary” is not something that appeals to bright young theologians, nor need it be taken at face value. On the other hand, new, innovative, and adventurous ideas are top drawer, in line with the attitude of our day that the latest is the greatest, and the newest the best. Orthodoxy in theology, like conservatism in politics, is cold potatoes. But have we been sold down the river? The present popularity of Jordan Peterson on social media suggests a rising counter current.

Abstract:
The feature articles in this issue of MISS constitute a foray into twodifferent, but related, topics: political authority, as discussed by TamaraSonn in “Political Authority in Classical Islamic Thought,” and by SalimMansur in “Constitutionalism and Ethnic Conflict: The Case of Pakistan,”and the interrelationships among God, humanity, and the universe, asfound in Yusuf Waghid‘s “In Search of a Boundless Ocean and NewSkies: Human Creativity is a Matter of A‘mdl, Jihad, and Ijtihad,” andMasudul Alam Choudhury’s ‘Toward Islamic Political Economy at theTurn of the Century.”In her article, Tamara Sonn analyzes the source of political authorityin the ideal Islamic state. Breaking up Islamic political authority betweenthe executive and the legislative-judicial branches, Sonn reveals how thelegislative-judicial branch, that is, the branch that ensured that the entiregovernment was functioning according to the laws of God, was dominantin classical Islamic political theory. Unlike Christianity, where theologywas the source of politics, Islamic legal thought constituted the source ofpolitical ideas, so much so that “the identity of a community as Islamic ornot lies not in the behavior of the leader but in whether or not Islamic lawprevails.” Far from espousing a theocracy, concludes SOM, the idealIslamic state is governed as a “nomocracy.”In a similar vein, Salim Mansur‘s article is a critical examination of therelationship between constitutionalism and ethnic conflict, with a focus onPakistan. Mansur challenges the analytical scheme that identifies developedsocieties with mature institutions of legitimate order that provide forpolitical stability, continuity of political authority, and established rules forconflict settlement as well as, conversely, identifies developing societieswith the weakness or absence of such institutions. Instead, he argues thatconstitutional norms, designs, and processes need not be separated fromissues of institution building and that “the idea of constitutionalism needsto be integrated into the study of developing societies in order to discoverhow it contributes to a conciliatory process of political participation andpluralism in a society that might be potentially open to fragmentation alongethnic lines.”The other two feature articles found in this issue address the complexquestion of the relationship among God, humanity, and the universe. Abstract:
The ninth issue of Conversations responds to Cavell’s thoughts against the backdrop of the history of philosophy in general, and phenomenology, especially Hegel and Heidegger; unfolding metaphysical, epistemological, ethical, political, and aesthetic ramifications. It is against that backdrop, that the question arises about the nature and function of dialectic in wording the world, the other, or ourselves, as acknowledged by Paul Franks and Espen Hammer. The idea of the issue arose with an essay (an “attempt”) I was working on, about Cavell, Wittgenstein, and Hegel, at University of Leeds, while also reading The Phenomenology of Spirit with the Hegel Reading Group at the University of Oxford (Michaelmas term, 2020), and, meeting with the Cavellian Reading Group (that at the University of Cambridge, now an international group), upon sharing the idea of the essay with Amir Khan, this started a series of discussions, which eventually resulted in an invitation to guest edit this issue.

Abstract:
About a year ago – some of us had just met at the Göttingen congress of the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore (SIEF) and discussed the idea of a Festschrift for her ninetieth birthday – we heard of the sudden death of Ina-Maria Greverus, founder-editor of this journal. In his contribution to the twenty-fifth anniversary issue of AJEC, Ullrich Kockel had recounted how the founders of AJEC had ‘set out to bridge the various real and imagined gulfs between disciplines and approaches’ and how ‘successive editorial teams have, in different ways, tried to continue that original project while negotiating contemporary pressures’, noting that ‘[a]long the way, the founding spirit may sometimes have appeared ousted by the hegemonic criteria of academic respectability’ but proved resilient in the face of such pressures (Kockel 2012: 58). With this in mind, the editorial board discussed the idea of a special issue featuring contributions by members of the board past and present as well as others whose paths had crossed with Ina-Maria’s, and we decided to issue an ‘open-format’ call, encouraging a variety of reflexive, reminiscent, or otherwise discursive engagement with Ina-Maria, her work, and her influence – both academic and personal – on so many of us, of her own as well as of younger generations.

Abstract:
Editorial cartoons have an unchallenged history as a unique and important artefact in both political and cultural discourses. In journalism, they offer varied insights and may eventually alter beliefs and opinions, influence politics, trigger discussions, and give life to ideas. This paper investigates the signs and meanings of editorial cartoons published in a campus newspaper of a tertiary school in the Philippines. It anchors on Chandler’s semiotic concepts in analyzing the editorial cartoons that incorporate both the Saussurean dyadic concept of signs, signifier and signified, and the Peircean triadic concept of signs as symbolic indexical, and iconic. It also considers Leymore’s idea of the figure and ground, which identifies the primary, secondary, and tertiary signifiers based on their importance or impact on editorial cartoons. Analysis shows that editorial cartoons contain all types of signifiers, primary, secondary, and tertiary, which work together to effectively convey the intended meanings to its target readers. These signifiers also possess certain characteristics as being symbolic, indexical, and iconic and they blend together to enrich the editorial cartoons’ intended meanings. Furthermore, these editorial cartoons illustrate the newspaper’s perceptions as well as its stand on various issues and concerns relating or affecting the students and the whole academic community. Although these editorial cartoons are only published in the campus newspaper, they do not only deal with important local issues and concerns but in the national and global spheres as well.

Abstract:
Research Ethics and Integrity Research is a process that involves numerous stages—including developing the idea, formulating the research title, partnering with other researchers and the research subjects, developing the research methods, collecting and analysing data, reporting findings, writing and publishing the research, among others. At every stage of the research process, researchers are required to adhere to ethical norms to meet the overall objectives of research, notably to advance the body of knowledge and promote scholarship. Upholding ethics in the conduct of research is important to ensure the promotion of truth and minimisation of error in research findings. Researchers should also be held accountable for responsible use of research grants and other matters such as compliance with regulations and policies related to research, or care for their subjects while collecting data. Above all, researchers should be held accountable for their research content and, as such, they should be concerned with the quality and integrity of their research so that their ideas can be further developed in future research. Given the importance of research ethics, several professional bodies, government agencies and universities have developed ethical codes of conduct to be adopted by researchers. At an international level, efforts have also been made to foster more unified policies, guidelines and codes of conduct on research integrity. The ‘Singapore Statement on Research Integrity’, released in 2010, is a notable example.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The creation of the Turtle Island Journal of Indigenous Health (TIJIH) emerged out of conversations in 2018 between an Indigenous professor1 and non-Indigenous graduate students working within Indigenous health research at the University of Toronto. TIJIH was intended to connect graduate students, Indigenous scholars, and Indigenous communities into a platform for work that focused on Indigenous health. The idea has since morphed into the establishment of a peer-reviewed journal and an accompanying Community of Practice (CoP) where people with an interest in Indigenous health can discuss, collaborate, and co-learn.

Abstract:
Most of our modern Western institutions and precepts – democracy, individualism, subjectivity, secularism, science, the nation state and the modern apparatus of war – began to germinate in the ‘long’ eighteenth century. In musical life too these were formative years. The emergence of the canon, with the associated idea of the musical ‘work’, was one such development. The rise of the virtuoso and the transformation of audiences from unwieldy and fitfully attentive to enthralled, disciplined and devout, two more. And with these developments, music’s role as a medium of social differentiation was both enhanced and qualitatively revised.

Abstract:
Dramaturgy happens in every theatrical process. Our goal in this issue is to broaden the understanding of who is doing it and what it entails. In addressing the idea of dramaturgy through creative research and new-play development, we decided to slip past institutional models that have been well articulated elsewhere. This issue is not about new-play development in producing theatres or in play-development houses – although it could have been. Our shared interests took us beyond that narrow institutional framework, in pursuit of a larger dramaturgy.
