Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter will focus on the two decades after 1945, the period of the “post-war society” (1945–1967), which in the historical sciences is also characterized as a period of boom (keywords: “Wirtschaftswunder” (“economic miracle”), expansion of the welfare state, expansion of the educational sector, certainty about the future) and which comes to an end in the 1970s. Germany was undergoing a profound process of change: socio-structural changes in an advanced industrial society, structural changes in the family and a retreat into the private sphere, new opportunities in the areas of consumption and leisure due to the “Wirtschaftswunder,” urbanization and changes in communities, “Western Integration” (“Westbindung”), the ban on the KPD (Communist Party of Germany) in 1956, remilitarization, the development of the mass media and mass motorization, and the repression of the Nazi past were central social and sociological issues. At the same time, fascist tendencies were still virulent during the 1950s and 1960s. After 1945, sociology had to be rebuilt. Journals were refounded or newly founded, the German Sociological Association was restored and sociology was re-established as a teaching subject. Different “schools” and regional centers of sociology emerged. The so-called Cologne School centered around René König, the Frankfurt School around Adorno and Horkheimer, and the circle around Helmut Schelsky should be mentioned in particular; but also, Wolfgang Abendroth, Werner Hofmann, and Heinz Maus (Marburg School), Otto Stammer (Berlin), Arnold Bergstraesser (Freiburg i.Br.), and Helmuth Plessner (Göttingen). Despite their theoretical and political differences, up until the 1950s, they all had in common the decisive will for political and social enlightenment regarding the post-war situation. Furthermore, the particular importance that empirical social research and non-university research institutions had for the further development of sociology after 1945 is worth mentioning. At the end of the 1950s, field-specific dynamics gained momentum. The different “schools” and groups tried to secure and expand their position in the sociological field and their divergent research profiles became increasingly visible. The so-called civil war in sociology drove the actors further apart. Additionally, disciplinary struggles and camp-building processes during the first 20 years of West German sociology revolved around the debate on role theory and the dispute over positivism. By the end of the 1950s, an institutional and generational change can be observed. The so-called post-war generation, which included Ralf Dahrendorf, Jürgen Habermas, Niklas Luhmann, Erwin K. Scheuch, Heinrich Popitz, Hans Paul Bahrdt, M. Rainer Lepsius, and Renate Mayntz, assumed central positions in organizations, editorial boards of journals, and universities. While the early “schools” and circles (König, Schelsky, Adorno, and Horkheimer) initially focused on the sociology of the family and empirical research, the following generation concentrated foremost on industrial sociology, but also on topics of social structure and social stratification as well as on social mobility.

Woodward, Jamie. "Editorial Introduction." In The Physical Geography of the Mediterranean. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199268030.003.0028.

Full text
Abstract:
Catastrophic earthquakes, explosive volcanic eruptions, and devastating storms and floods are intimately bound up within the history and mythology of the Mediterranean world. It is a key region for the study of natural hazards because it offers unrivalled access to long records of hazard occurrence and impact through documentary, archaeological and geological archives. Early texts and archaeological data have provided unique insights into the nature and impact of past eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other hazards. Notable events were carefully documented in Antiquity and the archaeological record provides insights into the impact of catastrophic events on past human societies. The eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, for example, was famously documented by Pliny the Younger, and the excavations at Pompeii have provided extraordinarily rich insights into the dynamics and impacts of tephra falls and pyroclastic flows. The significance of environmental hazards in the demise of civilizations such as Minoan Crete (tsunami) and the Early Bronze Age in the Near East (drought) has been vigorously debated for decades. While such events have undoubtedly threatened people in the region since prehistoric times, the actual threat to human society has increased dramatically in the historical and modern periods as urban environments and their populations have rapidly expanded. This part of the volume analyses hazards associated with both endogenic and exogenic Earth processes and the interactions between them. It includes volcanic processes, crustal instability, tsunamis, fluvial floods, extreme weather phenomena, and wildfires. Each chapter explores the basic controls and the geography of a particular hazard and related processes, and, over a range of timescales, magnitude and frequency relationships and the nature of the threat to human society. High-magnitude events are a fundamental part of the physical geography of the Mediterranean and play a key role in long-term landscape evolution and ecosystem change. Even though the processes associated with each hazard typically take place over very short timescales, they can set in motion long-term adjustments to geomorphological and ecosystem processes. Tephra falls can change soil properties and vegetation communities, for example, and earthquakes may trigger base-level change and landslips in river basins that enhance fluvial sediment yields for many centuries.

Abstract:
The article examines the creation of a journalistic network between Mexico and Spain by women writers in the second half of the nineteenth-century. I argue that journalistic aesthetics and feminine didacticism were shared and stimulated through editorial relationships on both sides of the Atlantic. This editorial dialogue created a presence for Spanish women writers in the Mexican public sphere and opened up a debate regarding the construction of historical discourse. The illustrated feminine journal became a platform for experimentation with cultural categories and questioned the uni-directionality of historical discourse. It raises a debate regarding the compartmentalization of national histories and created a space in which culture was made intelligible for both sides of the Atlantic –a space of cross-cultural literacy. The study of the press is a tool to understand intellectual transatlantic networks and the formation of a transatlantic Republic of Letters.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the proposed changes to the BBC's governance and a system of appointments that threaten to encroach on the BBC's editorial autonomy. What is particularly striking about this development is that it pushes in the general direction of growing state control of public service media. The BBC White Paper for Charter Renewal proposed a new ‘unitary board’ of which the majority and most senior members would be appointed by government. For the first time in its history, such an approach threatened to give a direct government appointee overall editorial responsibility for all of the BBC's output. What is equally striking about this move is that it flies in the face of what the government has long intimated was at the heart of its charter renewal agenda: to introduce a system of contestable funding to effectively break up the BBC and enable more local and commercial providers to take a slice of the licence fee.

Abstract:
In this chapter, I investigate the networks of women writers associated with Chambers’s Edinburgh Journal through an analysis of its ledgers and correspondence files. I detail their contributions, writing locations, rates of remuneration and working relationships with the editorial staff in order to shed light on the role Chambers’s played in the emergence of the popular woman writer in the early decades of the Victorian era. I link the work of individual writers to the editorial policies and generic conventions of the journal, which constructed ‘modern’ women as key players in the popular literature movement, both as readers and writers. Chambers’s provided a venue for prominent women writers such as Anna Maria Hall to reach broader audiences than ever before and for up-and-coming authors, such as Dinah Mulock and Julia Kavanagh, to establish themselves in a burgeoning literary marketplace. Chambers’s also provided opportunities for many other amateur and unknown authors to pursue their craft anonymously without name or fame. Written in part by and for women, Chambers’s Journal, by the 1850s, became an important vehicle for debates on the ‘Woman Question’, bringing issues of female education and employment to a broad audience of artisan and middle-class readers.

Heyam, Kit. "Appendix: Accounts of and allusions to Edward II’s reign , composed 1305–1697." In The Reputation of Edward II, 1305–1697. Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463729338_app.

Abstract:
This appendix collates newly researched editorial detail for 130 accounts of, and allusions to, Edward II’s reign written during the period 1305–1697 – representing the vast majority of texts addressing Edward II that were composed in England during this period. The table details each text’s textual history; languages and available translations; sources; and significance for the study of Edward II’s reputation. Since many Latin chronicles of Edward’s reign were last printed in the nineteenth century, and manuscript material in particular has been subject to confusing nomenclature, this appendix provides a clear and up-to-date reference guide with which scholars can inform their reading of any of these texts.

Abstract:
Edith Lewis moved to Greenwich Village in 1903 to pursue literary work and Bohemian life. Willa Cather visited her there twice before moving to the Village herself in 1906 to become an editor at McClure’s Magazine, the staff of which Lewis also joined. This chapter argues that Lewis’s editorial collaboration with Cather emerged out of their work at McClure’s. It also argues that when they moved in together in 1908, they followed the example of Sarah Orne Jewett and Annie Fields, whom Cather had met while working for McClure’s in Boston. Cather left magazine work to take up full-time authorship, but Lewis continued working at McClure’s and then Every Week. Lewis gave up writing bylined fiction and poetry, but together she and Cather merged pragmatism and idealism, the market and aesthetics.
