Abstract:
This study explores the use of interactional1 metadiscourse by first language (L1) and second language (L2) English editorialists. The study uses Hyland’s (2019) model of metadiscourse to analyse 80 editorials published between 2020 and 2021 in The Guardian and The Jordan Times newspapers (40 from each newspaper). A mixed-method approach – adopting quantitative and qualitative measures – was used to analyse the data. The frequency of interactional metadiscourse resources was statistically examined to find similarities and differences (if any) between the two corpora. The analysis revealed a statistically significant difference in the use of interactional metadiscourse resources in the editorials of the two newspapers. For instance, L2 editorialists used fewer hedges in their editorials and more boosters than L1 editorialists. In addition, engagement markers were used the most by L1 editorialists. The study provides some implications for editorialists who write in English and recommendations for future research.

Abstract:
The study attempted to contrastively compare editorial headlines of two writing cultures, Filipino and American. The objectives of the study were identifying the types of editorial headlines employed in the Manila Bulletin (henceforth MB) and Washington Post (henceforth WP), determining the particular presupposition triggers evident in the two writing cultures, and providing pedagogical implications in light of the findings of the study. Sixty-two editorial headlines from MB and WP were utilized during the surge of the Omicron Variant, extracted from December 1, 2021 to January 31, 2022. The findings of the study revealed that American editorialists favored producing verbal headlines because of the low-culture attribution, directness and explicitness of American editorialists compared to its counterpart with its high-culture attribution, indirectness and implicitness of Filipino editorialists. As far as the usage of presupposition triggers are concerned in writing headlines, Filipino editorialists preferred to write existential presupposition triggers than what American editorialists did because Filipinos are perceived as reader-responsible, whereas Anglo-Americans are known as writer-responsible. Pedagogical implications and research directions were provided.

Abstract:
Using categorization of interactive metadiscourse, the present study attempted to contrastively compare editorials of two writing cultures, Filipinos and Americans. The objectives of the study were identifying the cultural features revealed by the Filipino editorialists and Anglo-American editorialists, and determining how the two writing cultures differ in the utilization of interactional metadiscourse resources in their editorials. A total of 180 editorials served as the corpus of the study; 90 from the Philippine Daily Inquirers (PDY) and 90 from the New York Times (NYT). The findings revealed that American editorialists significantly employed metadiscource resources as compared to Filipino editorialists specifically the employment of code glosses and transitional devices. This can be attributed to their writing confidence in utilizing their native language for Americans, while second language for Filipinos. Cultural, political, and social realities also play a critical role in the utilization of metadiscoursal resources in writing. The pedagogical implications were provided for future research directions.

Abstract:
This paper describes a contrastive study of the Philippine and Indonesian newspaper editorials in order to see similarities and differences in their physical size in terms of words and how Filipino and Indonesian editorialists utilized their discourse strategies through metadiscourse markers. To this end, 30 editorials of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and the Jakarta Post were examined through the lens of contrastive rhetoric analysis. The investigation of metadiscourse devices was grounded on the metadiscourse framework of Hyland (2005). Regarding the length of the editorials, the data revealed that the Philippine editorials employed more words compared to the Indonesian ones. The findings also show that both groups of editorialists used more interactional category, especially subcategory attitude markers in their writing, although the frequencies of the counts were different. The Philippine editorials contain more metadiscourse markers in all subcategories compared to the Indonesian editorials. The findings may indicate that as a genre, newspaper editorials have a generic feature of metadicourse markers, namely attitude markers. By using attitude markers effectively, editorialists make clear their stance on particular public issues and try to persuade readers to accept the opinion of the newspaper editors. The study shows that newspaper editorials are reader-oriented texts.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
EditorialIt was Benjamin Franklin who wrote that the only two things that one can be certain of in life are death and taxes. Those of us working in the health service in the United Kingdom would probably want to add change as the third certainty. No one was surprised, therefore, when New Labour, in their first White Paper on health, introduced us to a vocabulary of reforms with their now widely-used initials and acronym. These included HIPs (health improvement programmes), NSFs (national service frameworks), NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence), CHI (Commission for Health Improvement) and, to replace fund-holding, a new organization for general practice, the PCG or Primary Care Group.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The extensive and lavishly illustrated book by Barletta is partly based on an unpublished manuscript by H.A. Thompson, the former director of the Agora Excavations, and of W.B. Dinsmoor Jr., the architect of the excavation. It was first editorially revised by M. McAllister and finally Barletta assumed the task to publish it after her own intensive studies of the sanctuary and its remains. Because of her untimely death, she did not see the final publication which was provided meticulously by D. Scahill.
