Besalú, Xavier 1953. "Diversitat cultural i educació.
The thesis wants to reply four questions. Which conception of intercultural education, do Catalonia need in the 21st century? How has the educational system of Catalonia faced the arrival of foreign origin pupils? What kinds of changes will have to propitiate in the school curriculum in order to make a more scientific and fairer education? Which has to be the training that we have to offer to the teaching staff of the basic education to guarantee an intercultural education?
The intercultural education that is advocated in this thesis is that which it proposes to work so that all pupils learn to life in open and plural societies. In the intercultural education that is proposed there are three different emphases; the one that puts the accent on the ethical aspects, in the didactic aspects and in the cultural or curricular ones. And regarding the formation of the teachers, it is said that one of the first objective has to be the revision of the knowledge themselves and actitudes.

Full textFrom now on, this doctoral thesis tries to provide strength to the intercultural dimension in educational organizations in leisure-based community, since identifying the conditions that, today, favor or hinder intercultural development. By education in leisure-based community we understand organizations along long-term trajectories in Catalonia, that evidence a base of educational work with and for the community. Specifically, we have considered and used an intentional sample of 2 centres oberts (leisure educational space where most of young people are linked to social services), 2 esplais (similar to scout) and 2 scouts in multicultural contexts. In total, 31 semi-structured interviews are conducted: 12 were carried out on educators, 11 on young people and 8 on families. Likewise, a focus group was used with educational representation of each organization, and another one with educational experts. These two methods were reinforced with the analysis of internal documents. The fruit of critical analysis of speech are 42 outcomes ---organized into their nature: organizational context, diversity variables, educational context and the impact of interculturality. Afterwards, we show 13 conclusions in the abovementioned natures, relating them to a model for organizational change, in favorable or unfavorable conditions for interculturality. Among other key aspects, conclusions highlight the importance of promoting intercultural training processes according to specific contents that add gender, different intercultural visions or tools for improving measures in attention to diversity. Finally, we show an instrument proposal that tends towards the diagnosis of interculturality from an organizational development perspective. In this sense, we identify different indicators that, from various fields, place educational organization among –and potentially- 4 stages according to interculturality: reactive, proactive, expressive and expansive.
Benet, Gil Alicia. "Construyendo una universidad intercultural inclusiva." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Jaume I, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/666682.
Full textThe purpose of this work is to identify the current state of the cultures, policies and practices of Universitat Jaume I's educational community within the framework of the inclusive intercultural university. This research uses a qualitative case study methodology. To this day, the university, although it is willing to guarantee attention to diversity, is still based on a more integrative model than an inclusive one. In conclusion, Universitat Jaume I has a deep vocation for being an inclusive university, but it is necessary that the institution addresses some challenges, such as the incorporation of the model in the ideology; generate an inclusive policy that encompasses all services, plans and programs; and the evaluation of teaching practices, promoting faculty training as an indispensable element.

Full textThe study deals with the topic of manifestations of “prejudiced thought” in the digital environment, which are often linked with “banalised” racist and socially shared performances. In order to identify specific educational responses and good practices of intervention, the various forms taken by prejudice on the Web in the light of affective-emotive, and not only rational, aspects have to be analysed. The research environment is Web 2.0, understood as “augmented reality”, i.e. a space that is not opposed to reality but marked by its own specificities. A corpus of “online racism” has been identified to be submitted to a qualitative-textual analysis through T-Lab software and, in parallel, a qualitative-motivational type of analysis. The results obtained were then interpreted in the light of a dual bibliography: on the one hand that of intercultural pedagogy and classic studies on racism, on the other that on the characteristics of the digital environment, the pragmatics of online communication and of Media Education. Some conversations were also carried out during the research – with different outcomes – via Ask.fm with adolescents contacted as, in various ways, they had taken part in racist performances; as well as a case study of virtual ethnography, this is proposed as an experiment on education on reflectivity. It will be noticed how an implicit recovery of the biological question, with non-scientific bases, emptied of meaning, but paradoxically accepted and internalised, derives from the banalisation of racist theories and the lack of a sense of responsibility of “being on the Web”. On the other hand, several examples of activating “digital citizens” are encountered; from this “antiracist capital” as well, the role of education for citizenship – intercultural, digital and moral – in forming subjects and moral agents in the mediapolis, asserting the value of responsibility towards others, will also be emphasised.

Full textThis thesis aims to show how political and regulatory guidelines are translated into practice and how different educational agents in the community articulate and develop actions and conditions to carry out those practices. It does so by describing, from the point of view of the different agents that come together in the educational context of the community, the actions and conditions that facilitate and impede the planning and development of educational resources for interculturality and social inclusion. The thesis is divided into two parts, the first consisting of five chapters: four that lay the theoretical groundwork and a fifth that details the methodological framework. The first part outlines the thesis’s foundation in the context of global crisis and the existing policies for social and educational interculturality and social and educational inclusion. It approximates the discourse on intercultural education and it situates the concept of community and the strong resurgence of the idea of community as the meeting place and space where educational mediations occur. The methodology employed is qualitative and the method is descriptive, looking at a case study and analysing the regulatory documents. Content analysis was employed for the data analysis and the program Nvivo was used for the treatment of the data, the plans for integration and construction of concepts of citizenship, and the interviews with agents that work in education in educational centres, municipal education employees and entities that work to improve quality of life in the community. The results of the research indicate that important work has been carried out by those involved in education on a day-to-day basis. Regulatory documents and policies have also contributed to this work because they have optimized working methodologies while constructing collaborative working networks with the implication of agents from local administration and third-sector entities. The intercultural community education sector must continue to work to improve equality of opportunity, the construction of complex identities, and intercultural communication within the framework of citizen participation. In the second part, Chapter Six presents the documentary analysis of the plans and programs for integration and the inclusion of immigration that have, over the past decades, oriented the actions of social and educational policy and the interrelation of the different sources analysed throughout the course of the research. It also describes the conceptual evolution of plans for the citizenry and for immigration, which are documents that arise from policy and also act as reference for new policies introduced for the integration and the inclusion of immigration in Catalonia. In this chapter, we lay out the fundamentals for the procedures and validate the results in relation to the context of the data from the different sources analysed and the methodology employed. In Chapter Seven, examples are presented of the data gathered from the interviews, with the aim of relating the original theoretical assumptions with the defined objectives, the established categories, and the contributions, evaluations and opinions of the different actors in relation to the research questions that were posed for the case study. This chapter also contains a final summary and conclusion section about the case study. The last chapter summarizes the conclusions from the data analysis and from the dialogue established with the different community actors, representatives of educational centres, local government employees and community agents, then goes on to make brief recommendations and set out possible lines of action for the generation of processes to strengthen the component of intercultural pedagogy in the community.
To educate for a Colombia's democratic and intercultural citizenship, it is necessary to form to the teaching post who work in the schools in different cultural contexts with socioeconomic exclusion. In this thesis, it has been detected forming needs, from which it has been elaborated a forming program according to the teachers' interests and expectations. After, it was evaluated and improved.
Our objectives are: 1) To analyze the secondary schools' teachers' forming needs, who work in schools located near multicultural contexts with social unfairness. 2) To elaborate a teachers' forming program in the schools that helps to build up a democratic and intercultural citizenship beginning from the teachers' forming needs. 3) To do a participative evaluative research of the teachers' forming program for a Colombia's democratic and intercultural citizenship.
To get these objectives it was done needs forming diagnosis and teachers' forming program participative evaluative research. Our methodological design has the next stages:
1. Diagnosis study.
2. The teachers' forming program development.
3. Participative evaluation of the forming program.
The diagnosis study was developed in a first exploratory study with the teaching staff in one school, the second exploratory study with teachers of four schools. The forming needs found in the second study confirmed the first one. The information was collected through discussion groups.
In the second stage, a forming program was elaborated according to the needs found in the first stage. The dimensions to analyse were: the cultural and political membership feeling, the civic competence and the civic participation.
Finally, there were created two groups in two different schools. It was evaluated the context, the process and the results, besides the program was improved. The information was collected through documental analysis, interview to a community's leader, participant observation, interviews to the teachers and an open questions questionnaire to ten teachers.
The main results were: 1) The detection of teachers' forming needs to form intercultural and democratic citizens. 2) A contextualized permanent forming program to the teachers' reality in multicultural contexts and social problems. 3) The construction of a civic identity and working for the welfare of the educational community. 4) The teachers give meaning to the change because by being critical with their reality, they can organize and guide the educational project to the needs, interests and aspirations of the community where they work.
Full text“Hacia un diálogo intercultural en educación desde la comprensión del saber mapuche” ["Towards an intercultural dialogue in education from the understanding of mapuche knowledge"] is a study that seeks to understand the meaning given by mapuche peoples to their community educational experiences and learn the intercultural educational practices of mapuche teachers working in school environments. Based on the search for an understanding into other ways of educating, thinking and speaking, the possibility arises to think of schools once again in order to build an education that is significant and well-placed for culturally diverse students. This investigatory journey was inspired by hermeneutical phenomenology, by diatopical hermeneutics and by the inatuzugun –a mapuche form of research- because only from intercultural methodology has it been possible to generate a proximity between two worlds of different meanings and a dialogue of knowledge in the educational environment. Covering it from this perspective has led to a different way of accessing the phenomenon of study, but above all to a learning and educational experience, where I have been unconsciously transformed and taken from one place to another, showing me previously unknown landscapes. New horizons that talk about an education that does not exist in an abstract sense but only a practical sense, that talk about xemümün as “helping to grow” and about kimeluwün as “helping to learn”, education to live and to coexist in a world where mankind is related with many other subjects that also claim their place in the network of relationships. Landscapes that show the work of mapuche educators who, despite the difficulties, seek to build bridges between the mapuche community and the school, and between their community education and teacher training experiences. Experiences that invite us to learn and to take another look at our proposals and our way of understanding education.

Full textLa Educación Intercultural Bilingüe en Chile desde la mirada mapuche [Intercultural Bilingual Education in Chile from a mapuche viewpoint] is the title of a doctoral dissertation seeking to understand the way in which the relationship with education, the language –mapuzugun- and educational knowledge is experienced in the Intercultural Bilingual Education of schools located in mapuche communities in southern Chile. Schools working with this programme that has been designed to prepare children belonging to different indigenous peoples to cope appropriately both in their society of origin and in society as a whole. This research was undertaken as a two-sided experience, as an educational and learning process (Simons and Masschelein, 2006) where I was given the chance to transform into my role as a researcher (Hizmeri, 2016), and as a way of approaching the intercultural bilingual educational endeavour from a simultaneous, mixed design, with survey studies and a phenomenological-hermeneutical perspective as ways of understanding the educational situation. It accounts for how I reached the conclusion that this research should be studied in "another way", from a mapuche stance and awareness, as it formed part of the intercultural educational endeavour, of my personal and professional experience and, above all, of the life experiences of mapuche children, their families and their communities. Posing this investigatory journey from a mapuche viewpoint is based on the idea of the incommensurability of cultures (Panikkar, 2002; Estermann, 2006), on the certainty that progressing towards an intercultural dialogue in education must also be based on investigatory dialogue, and on the acknowledgement of otherness, allowing for proximity to a way of relational and mapuche community life and to the experience of intercultural practice by the players involved.

Full textThis action-research study focuses on the description, analysis and critical evaluation of a course for cultural studies about the Hispanic world, and Spain, framed within a post-communicative content-centered pedagogy which uses stereotypes as a mediating artifact to change attitudes toward the cultures being studied. The overall aim of the course is to help develop learners critical thinking skills through the examination of power relations in society, politics, art and culture in Spain/USA during the twentieth century, and to the present. Likewise, oficial concepts of culture will be examined within those power structures. For this purpose, debates, personal research projects, discussions with classmates, and with a native, as well as personal reflections about the cultures being studied, including their own, were implemented, and evaluated through a series of summative assessments. Course contents were analyzed by means of self-reflective texts, wich included culturally relevant products, values, situations and experiences. Its overall pedagogical goal was to observe and describe the movements of intercultural communicative competence in students during their undertaking of the course, or perhaps as a result of an earlier phase of contact with the target cultures; being the elements described mainly cultural and intercultural awareness and cultural sensitivity. Similarly, we did not discard other aspects of intercultural competence, even if not explicitly mentioned in any of the theoretical frameworks consulted, which assisted in reformulating or expand the concept within the foreign language classroom context. Personal traits variables, identity orientation, and linguistic proficiency were mentioned only in connection with relevant data provided spontaneously by the learners. Limited spam of college semesters were also be taken in the equation (3 months and a half), with the purpose of finding new, and better ways to teach oral Spanish as a second language, and as a vehicle for intercultural development. Summarizing, it is our goal to improve the understanding of phenomena from a communicative point of view, related with sub-concepts of intercultural competence, that is cultural and intercultural awareness, and sensitivity, which are likewise classically considered precursors of intercultural competence.

Full textThis thesis presents a case study based on the process of transforming a school into an inclusive intercultural model and a specific classroom. It is about knowing how that process of change is and how the personal and emotional dimension can be integrated within the framework of the inclusive intercultural school. For this, an ethnographic approach and a life history are made. The results of this study show us the conditions, the obstacles and transformations of the centre and the classroom, and the life story of the classroom teacher. The conclusions bring us closer to a perspective focused on the teacher, from its complexity as a person and the importance of carrying out an education centred on the personal development of students. In short, it is a study that speaks of self-knowledge in order to educate students in the development of their own being.

Full textThe aim of this research is to analyze the contradictions that are explicit in the discourse of ten Pre-Primary Education, Primary Education and Secondary Education teachers, who work in linguistic and cultural schools. To do this, we focus on teachers’ beliefs as part of reflective practice and realistic learning. As we study the dialectical contradictions, we use the theoretical and methodological framework of Activity Theory (Engeström, 1987). The methodological framework is also developed by means of analysing three different methods of data collection: life stories, semi-structured interviews and discussion groups. We analyze them in a qualitative way, using discourse in interaction. The results point to the need of promoting (auto)confrontation and systematic analysis of experience as a resource to help teachers become aware of representations which guide their actions. By analysing five types of discursive manifestations of contradictions, we also have detected three evolutionary phenomena, of evolution, which are awareness, expansion and transformation.

Gambian settlements, like the majority of immigrant settlements tend to be concentrated in certain determined areas. This study is centred on the province of Girona for this very reason, and because it is where the highest number of this group of people are to be found. This focuses special attention on three towns within the Girona province which have large numbers of Gambians, Banyoles, Olot and Salt. At the same time this thesis concerns the Soninke or Sarahole group because it is the largest ethnic group in the province of Girona. After analysing the context of origin of these immigrants (placing special emphasis in the schooling in Gambia), we investigate the migratory strategies of the Gambian immigrants as well as the strategies which they use to undertake their migratory project, such as the social networks which the migrants use, access to information channels about different destinations where there are work opportunities, etc. We also look at the integration of Gambian immigrants in the country of settlement. In short, an approximation is made as to the insertion of this collective into the society of the country of destination, and covering the different aspects of their integration: work, religion and spatial relationships among others. Many of these immigrants have, and have had children, and therefore a "second generation" of Gambians can now be referred to. This thesis focuses special attention on the lives of the children within this collective; investigating their socialisation, the values of their parents in the upbringing of their children, the changes of family structure once settlement has been established in the country of destination, the relationships of the family with friends and parents of the same ethnic group and their schooling in the Girona province. Full textThe title of the thesis reflects the purpose of this study: Diagnose the situation of the Training for Citizenship in secondary school students in Mexico, from a Democratic and Intercultural Citizenship Model. The current socio-political context of Mexico shows a citizenship that works hard to consolidate its democracy. However social inequality, poor participation and a lack of recognition of cultural and linguistic diversity that still exists in Mexican society undermines its own democratic principles. Under this framework, the research focused on understanding what the Mexican Educational System is doing through its policies and through the school curriculum, to eliminate the situations that hinder , the democratic development of the Mexican republic, and the achievements of its secondary students. The choice of this level was to do with the fact of having students at a critical stage of their identity building process, key element in the Citizenship Education, and also for being the largest collective of the System about to begin to exercise their civil Rights. For doing the diagnose, we established a Democratic and Intercultural Citizenship theoretical Model which respond to the profile and requirements of the Mexican context. This Model was constructed based on the review of several models of Citizenship Education, including the GREDI´s (Intercultural Education Research Group) Active, Responsible, Critic and Intercultural Education Citizenship Model, from the University of Barcelona, which give us many important elements. The main dimensions of the model we built – Citizenship conception, Interculturality, Sense of ownership, Citizenship Competencies and Citizenship participation- were the parameters used to analyze the curriculum of Citizen Education in Mexico. Likewise, these dimensions were used in a questionnaire that we applied to the secondary education students. The diagnosis found that the Mexican Citizenship Education curriculum has all the aspects of our model and the empiric study holds the relations between all these. The research has three theoretical chapters. The first one it is about the Mexican Citizenship conception, the second one established the key elements that must be present in the Citizenship Education and the third one, develops the Democratic and Intercultural Citizenship Education Model. Subsequently, a chapter is devoted to the analysis of curriculum for Citizenship Education in Mexico. The fifth chapter reflects the methodology used and the sixth explain the empirically results. Finally, we present the conclusions, suggestions for improvement, and the constraints and prospects of research.

"TOWARDS AN INTERCULTURAL CURRICULUM IN PRIMARY. THE INVESTIGATION-ACTION AS METHODOLOGY AND THE MUSIC AS THE LEADING OF THE CHANGE".
TEXT:
This thesis project is framed within the field of the educative investigation and raises like objective opening the scholastic curriculum to other cultural visions, given the existing cultural diversity nowadays in our classrooms.
The inicial hypothesis is the conviction of which we cannot establish a cultural dialogue if the pupils do not have knowledge of other cultures.
The first chapter, of conceptual and contextual character, details the main concepts as far as cultural diversity, explains the educative models that can give an answer to this diversity, reviews the effective educative directives in this scope and justifies and characterizes the stage of primary education to carry out the work.
The second chapter gathers the directions to elaborate an intercultural curriculum and the necessity of the educative community of formation in this scope.
The third chapter presents/displays the relations between music and culture, since we wanted to use the infantile song in other languages to begin to know other cultures and to later facilitate the cultural dialogue in the rest of educative matters.
The fourth chapter includes the general design of the investigation and details the specific objectives, justifying the adoption of the "cooperative investigation-action" model by its integration of formation, investigation and action.
The fifth chapter details the elaboration of the initial resource: music in other languages.
In the sixth chapter the physical and personel space of the school is characterized, detailing the adaptation from the resource to all the areas and the process of the formation of the teaching staff.
Chapters 7, 8 and 9 detail the process of transformation achieved in school in three stages: sensitizing, towards the autonomy and consolidation.
The chapter tenth presents the final evaluation of the process.
The last chapter gathers the conclusions of the investigation, presents the limits of this one and details diverse future lines of investigation in this scope.

Full textThis research tells the journey undertaken by a democratic educational community towards an inclusive model of guidance. It is a model of diversity management built from the varying voices and needs of the groups that join in the school project. This qualitative research takes place within an ethnographic case study. It presents two interventions that have been crucial in the cooperative creation of the model: a process of empowerment carried out by the sixth-grade pupils, and a training process aimed at the school's educational agents. The results include the barriers and facilitators that determine the creation of the model, and the values, policies and practices that support it. In a nutshell, the model defends democratic principles, critical culture and interpersonal co-responsibility in order to make diversity-oriented tasks more inclusive.

Full textThis research was made at the Cauca River Valley (Valle Geográfico del Río Cauca), particularly at Puerto Tejada, town located at the very south west of Colombia; where violence, vulnerability and segregation endanger the exercise of fundamental human rights. The main objective of this Thesis is: “Design, implement, and assess the results of a teaching training program oriented to the transformation of citizens’ behavior focusing on abilities for life and intercultural skills at the Cauca River Valley.” The theoretical frame develops the following concepts: citizenship, abilities for life, interculturality and teaching training. Epistemologically, it is assumed the dialog between the socio-critic paradigm and the paradigm of complexity. Methodologically, the research is approached from a participative evaluation. I created a citizens´ training program focused on the abilities for life and the dialog of plural knowledge, both as the main media that constructs and actives intercultural citizenship, as well as transforms participants’ practices. In the construction of this citizens´ identity, there are four roles of the self: affective, rational, relational, and transformer. There are also four areas of intercultural citizen action: feeling, knowing-thinking, living and doing; in their interaction they generate new symbolic territorialities and new spaces for the construction of the common good. The program was entitled Degree in citizens’ behavior training for peace through the development of abilities for life and interculturality (Diplomado de formación ciudadana para la paz desde el desarrollo de habilidades para la vida y la interculturalidad). It was accomplished by sixty six participants -both teachers and researchers-, and sponsored by two Universities. At the end of the training program, participants made evident their empowerment as teachers, researchers and agents of social transformation. They became proficient on the theories, practices, methodologies, communicative and critical thinking skills; as well as they became talented in creating their own knowledge. By all these, they are now agents of peaceful coexistence and generators of opportunities for the achievement t of the fundamental human rights.

Full textThe aim of this work is to analyse how a shared reading project with the participation of children and their families can favour learning to read in multilingual and intercultural contexts. To achieve this purpose, we have designed the project "Contes en família" and we have carried it out in the context of a school in Barcelona with children of different languages and cultures. Starting from the conception of reading as a social and emotional practice, rooted in a specific historical and cultural context, we wanted to observe how the constant presence of family literacies during the reading experience can facilitate the interpretation of the texts and nurture the interest to read. Thus, from the concepts of situated and plural family literacies, we have asked ourselves how family literacies can become "instruments" that contribute to the construction of a third space; a space that we see as in constant construction and that is situated between the official space of the school and the unofficial spaces (environments) of the students. Under a qualitative, ethnographic methodological and case study approach -three students and their families- we have directly developed the sessions of the "Contes en família" project; interviewing the relatives and teachers of the participating children, recording the sessions and transcribing them, and lastly answering the questions posed through discourse analysis and interpretation of the data. The results obtained emphasize the importance of learning to read as a cognitive, emotional and linguistically mediated process. We have been able to verify the importance of the presence of a facilitator who exemplifies the strategies of interpretation and interaction. The results also show that the presence and collaboration of parents in the reading process provide an emotional support to children that sustains the reading process. From a linguistic point of view, we have observed that the use of hybrid language (and the local literacies of the students in general), is an important instruments of mediation for the construction of knowledge; at the same time it facilitates the appropriation of the school’s discourse which is necessary for the school progress. The results also show how broadening the conventional model of school-family relationships, such as offering a shared reading space, may have an impact on parental involvement in school.

Full textThis doctoral thesis analyses the History and Social Sciences teacher pedagogical practices in the context of multicultural secondary education classrooms in the city of Santiago de Chile. The study begins with a background section of what has happened in Chile in the last recent decades in terms of migration, population country evolution. It also focuses on the distribution and educational offered by the country. Subsequently, the study takes into analysis the theoretical framework of the topic to investigate and associated issues in terms of cultural diversity management in the educational field, specifically in the teaching of history, as well as the environment of the classroom. The study continues with a detailed methodological framework where the qualitative design is exposed, which is based on the case study of the research. The work done with the collected data is exposed, followed by an interpretation of the results. In a final section, a theoretical discussion of these results is presented, together with the conclusions; these show us that pedagogical practices are still closer to assimilationism than to intercultural practices. This is related to the fact that teachers do not have a solid training, neither theoretical nor practical, in areas of cultural diversity management, and, due to shortcomings in their training, they are not able to respond to these demands. In addition to this, the contents of the History discipline make the immigrant students or other group “invisible”, due to a cultural hegemony that, despite recognizing this difference, does not accept any person who does not conform to the “canons” established as “country culture”. This will also be reflected above all in the classroom, where it influences the class environment. This attitude comes from the preconceived ideas about the immigrant, which can be very different and singular in any home and family, and it can generate discriminatory actions, and causes that, ultimately, the immigrant student is excluded. Therefore, guidance is provided for new and ongoing training programs for teachers in Chile, from incorporating other perspectives, approaches and / or more elements; so that at the end of their training they are capable to carry out pedagogical practices that include all the students of the classroom.

The focus of the present study is to answer a great question: can adolescents at risk be socially promoted through community art in an urban context? The goal is therefore to validate the theoretical, intense relationship between the development of social promotion and the use of methods related to community art or cultural expansion in the context of streets with adolescents at risk. The methodology applied arises from the case study from the orientation of the critical communication methodology, and its character is purely qualitative. It can be stated that, in this research exercise, the adolescents became the main roles of the artistic process, from the very beginning and to the end. In this respect, the key was the acquisition of “Attitude” as a way to approach life. It has also been found crucial the adolescents’ opportunity to show their artistic achievements to other people. This whole process is a key point in the accomplishment of the empowerment through the education in sacrifice and the attainment of attitude. The lead participation of the adolescents in the artistic exercise not only allows the empowerment, it also improves the relationship with the street educator. The present work has caused expectations and moments of self-improvement. The adolescents, as owners of their education experience, showed absolute trust in the educators´ suggestions. The relationship was built on the premise of them being in control of their own space, with the educators playing a support role helping the group. We consider that this process generated a model of authority, in which the adolescents recognise the educators’ ability and knowledge, and that this is what created the educative relationship.

Full textIn light of the new challenges and problems that have triggered the progressive increase of the foreign student population in Catalan primary education, schools are being reaffirmed as a privileged context to promote their inclusive and socialising role and their role as transformers of the social reality. Similarly, the role of the teaching staff, conceived as the main “agent of change” for collective transformation (Baker, 1994; Chepyator-Thomson et al., 2000), acquires vital importance when promoting and establishing the intercultural educational principles announced by the political and theoretical spheres. In view of the scientific void that exists about interculturalism and Physical Education (PE) (Choi & Chepyator-Thomson, 2011; Dagkas, 2007; Grimminger, 2011; Harrison & Belcher, 2006; López Pastor, 2012), knowing and analysing how PE teaching staff perceive and experience the multicultural reality of the students becomes particularly interesting, since this group holds a tool of great educational potential with which the intercultural proposals made in the school can be attained (Capllonch et al., 2007; López Ros, 2007; Ortí, 2004; Soler, 2004). The present doctoral thesis focuses on the professional practice of PE teaching staff that have more than five years’ professional experience in a public primary education centre, where the percentage of foreign students enrolled exceeds 50%, to respond to the following questions: a) how do they perceive their immigrant students?; b) what does their pedagogical intervention in a multicultural classroom involve?; and c) how has their professional trajectory developed in this context? This work is organised into four parts, in addition to an introduction, bibliography and appendices. The first part explains the status of the issue, and is composed of five chapters in which the following themes are explored: the cultural diversification of society and school, and more specifically, the status of Catalan schools; the role of the teaching staff as an agent reproducing traditions or an agent of change for transformation; the pedagogical activity of the teaching staff in a multicultural school, focusing in particular on the role of PE teaching staff; the status of the academic training of the teaching staff as regards cultural diversity; and PE as a tool to educate towards interculturality. The second part focuses on the theoretical and methodological design used. On the basis of the literature review, the theoretical object is composed of a catalogue of three dimensions which in turn are broken down into diverse more specific variables and indicators. As regards the methodological design, the interpretative-qualitative direction of the present research has developed into a multiple case study (12 cases). Semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation were the techniques used to collect information. To analyse the results, content analysis was performed with the help of the programme “Nudist Nvivo®”. In the third part of the thesis the results are interpreted and analysed. The eight chapters comprising the thesis are organised on the basis of the dimensions and variables of the study. The fourth part of the thesis consists of a discussion of the results and the conclusions. The most notable conclusions of this study are: a) a theoretical classification of the three pedagogical profiles of PE teaching staff in view of the cultural diversity of the students (“sensitive-inclusive”, “romantic-assimilator” and “burnout-prejudiced”); and b) a number of relevant directions for the establishment of intercultural PE. Finally, in this chapter the main limitations of this study are highlighted, as well as new lines of research.

This doctoral thesis is based on the ethnography of a state secondary school situated in an average-sized town in Catalonia with a medium-low socio-economic level and a population that includes considerable numbers of immigrants both from other parts of Spain and from some African coutnries (principally Morocco and Gambia).
The thesis includes bibliographical research and a theoretical clarification to situate the phenomena of indentity, racism and violence within the historical and social context of the present day. The growing importance of these phenomena and the relationships established between them are explained in this context.
The first part of the thesis endeavours to provide a theoretical context for the ethnographic research and to situate the classroom observations within a much wider social framework.
The second part of the thesis introduces contributions from educational sociologists and anthropologists to the analysis of how ethnic diversity, racism and violence are dealt with in schools.
The third part develops the ethnographic research by focusing on the interethnic relations among the students.
