Through the use of the term “possibilism” coined by Arns Næss, the article concludes that an important task in arts education is to help students develop a competence in being open for many possible futures: to play with the arts. Abstract Is education being disingenuous about arts education? When arts education is evaluated, the value of arts education is disputed. Arts education is judged to be of poor educational proof value. I believe a very different conclusion about arts education can be drawn. Pertinent to a good education in general is arts education. Why the arts are educationally troubling and how arts education can improve education is examined here. A brief account of arts education is given in an attempt to explain why the arts in education are not a luxury but, instead, a genuine need.

Combining the arts and standard curricula together can create a richer and more lasting learning experience for students who believe that learning science is boring in classes. It is suggested that study of the arts should be accepted as an essential part of achieving success in work. To this end, the most important action will be coordinating efforts of scholars from various areas to allow arts education for science students to become an evidence-based field. The place of art in society is hotly debated. This also applies to the question of the role of art in education and education in the arts in times of change. This of course includes questions about the future of art schools and art education itself. But there is more, such as the demand for a broad basic education and access to the arts for all, the role of education in safeguarding the arts in the future, and the inspiration from the arts to think creatively about other forms of living together with human and non-human inhabitants. In this issue we want to shed some light on these questions.
