Full textIn the contemporary socio-economic context, career paths are marked by transitions and career changes that often involve returning to school (Bourdon, 2010). However, while the school-to-work transition has been widely studied, the work-to-school transition is still poorly understood in the field of career development (Barclay, Stoltz, & Chung, 2011). What characterizes the relation to knowledge of adult students, that is, people going back to school in vocational education and training (VET) ? The objectives of this research are to : (1) identify what learning in VET means to adult students ; (2) determine what drives their desire to learn in VET ; (3) define the meaning they give to schooling. A qualitative methodology within the constructivist paradigm was adopted. Semi-structured individual interviews of approximately 2 hours were conducted with 20 VET students in an urban center of the province of Quebec. The interviewees were 6 women and 14 men aged between 25 and 45 years old who come from the fields of construction, agriculture, and health, and who returned to school after spending at least a year on the labor market. A thematic analysis of the verbatim transcripts was conducted according to the method proposed by L'Écuyer (1990) and highlighted by the theoretical contributions of Charlot (1999) and Beaucher (2004). The results revolve around three themes that lead to identify the relation to knowledge of adult students in VET : the meaning of learning, the desire to learn, and the meaning of schooling. Findings on teaching practices likely to favor VET student mobilization are drawn up and theoretical leads are proposed.

In this thesis, we examine perseverance and dropout factors related to recently immigrated Haitians in the province of Québec and New York State. A review of the literature reveals a lack of documentation on this issue. A conceptual framework was thus devised to better address these factors and to analyse and synthesise several theoretical approaches such as those regarding immigrants and educational attainment (Rong and Brown, 2001; Warikoo and Carter, 2009; Xie and Greenman, 2011), forms of social capital (Bourdieu, 1979a, 1979b, 1980), social groups and roles (Merton, 1965), and the school-effect/teacher-effect (Crahay, 2000; Bressoux, 1994a). Also exposed are two comprehensive approaches, namely, interactionism (Weber, 1959; Boudon, 1979, 1994; Goffman, 1998; Garfinkel, 1967) and the ESCOL group’s theory on the relationship with knowledge (Rochex, 2002; Charlot, 2003), with the goal of bringing to light the relative nature of the conclusions of qualitative research focused on participant subjectivity in the analysis of social activity. For this study, eleven people (seven men and four women) from Montréal and Brooklyn were interviewed. Each participant had experienced school dropout at either the secondary school or adult education level. The semi-structured interview was chosen as the data collection method and data analysis was performed thematically. Data analysis made it possible to categorise the resulting data under five headings: economic capital, cultural capital, social capital, institutional supervision, and specific factors. These five groups contain the perseverance and dropout factors expressed by the participants in this study. The results of this study shed significant light on the issues relative to the dropout dynamics of first-generation young and young adult Haitian immigrants in the province of Québec and the State of New York at both the secondary school and adult education levels. Our findings were compared with those of the reviewed literature on the subject as well as within the conceptual framework of this thesis. The synthesised results thus lead us to propose an analysis model which can be referred to as an « academic revival of newly immigrated Haitian students in the province of Québec and the New York State ». The analysis and synthesis of the factors emerging from this thesis, and more specifically the six themes describing the specific factors (demography, personal motivation, basic challenges, affective aspects, personality traits, and behavioural issues) enabled us to develop another concept which may represent a significant contribution to the perseverance in school of Haitian new arrivals: psycho-integrational supervision, a form of mentoring provided for these young and young adult students to better guide their socioeducational development and academic perseverance in their new home. Psycho-integrational supervision will consist of identifying certain psychological factors affecting young and young adult Haitian students prior to their arrival in relation to the social elements affecting their lives in their adopted country. This personalised assistance will be made possible with the support and involvement of the State, social integration instances, and schools. The principal instigators, notably psychologists, social workers, and social anthropologists will thus seek to better understand and guide new arrivals in terms of behaviours to adopt to nurture effective socio-cultural, professional, and economical growth.

Full textThe adult education system in Québec receives more and more young people from 16 to 24 years old who wish to complete the final courses at the elementary school level in order to acquire the level necessary to allow them to have access to high school. The path of these students is marked by grade repetition and by difficult psychosocial situations that generally lead them to think they are less able to learn. However, according to Freire (1982), all human beings are able to learn from their own experiences, and according to Piaget (1964), human beings are born with the cognitive capacity of adaptation and organization, the very mechanisms that allow for the constant construction of intelligence. Accordingly, the aim of this research is to try to awaken the consciousness of the creative and intellectual capacity in young Quebeckers who have been excluded from regular schooling and who have enrolled in adult education. From five individual free-drawing sessions with six participants, we seek to achieve consciousness of a role reversal of the teacher and student during a creative and reflexive activity. The explicitness of free-drawing was made possible thanks to a semi-structured interview protocol validated by previous studies (Stoltz Schleder, 1992; Teixeira, 2008). The participants produced and interpreted for themselves their drawings, transposing the different functions of intelligence and consciousness (Piaget, 1964, 1967). Results point to progress in the path to consciousness of their creative, intellectual and speech capacities. We address the complexity of intelligence by linking the cognitive, affective, social, ethical and moral aspects. The wealth of data expressed in their drawings and in their comments shows that the method used was effective to engage the complexity of intelligence. We concluded by emphasizing the importance of the recognition of the different aspects of intelligence in the scholar and also the importance of social inclusion from the students enrolled in adult education. Finally, the results of this study lead to a critical examination of the phenomena of labeling, over-diagnosis, and the abuse of psychotropic drugs (Monzée, 2010; Swenson, 2013) in relation to the importance of recognizing their intelligence.

Full textSecond dialect acquisition (SDA) may be defined as the process by which a geographically mobile individual adapts their linguistic practices to those in use intheir new environment, without learning a new language per se. Typically, this acquisition occurs at the phonetic level, as reflected in the intuitive idea that people who move away “change their accent”. Scientific accounts of SDA have only recently increased in number, as previous linguistic work has mostly focused on the practices of sedentary speakers. At the same time, pronunciation has long been thought to be settled from adolescence on. SDA is a widespread phenomenon given the increasing geographic mobility of individuals, although its phonetic outcomes are especially heterogeneous. Studies addressing this issue highlight the extensive array of factors that might explain why results vary across individuals and linguistic contexts. Internal factors such as the regularity of the rules that need to be learned, or external like the speakers’ integration to their new environment or concern to remain faithful to their origin, have been put forward. Depending on the theoretical perspective, SDA has been interpreted as an automatism, or as a process mediated by various aspects of the communication situation, the relationship between the speaker and their interlocutor, the frequency and recency of the phonetic properties of ambient speech, etc. This contribution is a sociophonetic study of SDA in Quebec. More precisely, 33 native speakers of Quebec French aged 18 to 22 were recruited upon enrollment in an undergraduate program at Université Laval. Eighteen of them were mobile speakers : they had just moved in Quebec City in order to start university, but were from somewhere else in the province. Born and raised in Quebec City, the 15 remaining participants were sedentary. On recruitment (T1), the speakers were recorded in a sound-attenuated booth while reading target words in isolation or inserted in carrier sentences. These target words featured all of the oral vowels of Quebec French in stressed syllable. The vowels were analyzed acoustically : their duration and the frequency and dynamics of their first three formants (F1, F2 and F3) were measured. The participants also completed questionnaires assessing their social integration, belonging to the socio-psychological phase of emerging adulthood and, for the mobiles only, faithfulness to their origin. The experiment was replicated a year later (T2). Results show that fine-grained acoustic changes occurred over time. The vowels moved closer to each other in the F1/F2plane. Frequency of F3 and formant dynamics decreased in some vowels. A reduction of the articulatory movements thus seems to have occurred. However, these changes took viplace in all speakers, whether they be mobile or sedentary. Neither of the other external factors taken into account (integration, emerging adulthood, faithfulness) could explain the changes. Therefore, we hypothesized that the way the participants perceived the experiment had evolved over time. As for the lack of more substantial phonetic shifts in mobile speakers, it could be explained by the short time span between the two experiments, since the first changes taking place during SDA do not usually happen at the phonetic level. Another possibility is that there are not enough dialectal features in Quebec City for the mobile speakers to change systematically, whereas, furthermore, the local population might not even be the main linguistic influence of university students. The mobile participants nonetheless proved aware of differences between their own speech and that of their new environment, suggesting that enhanced linguistic sensitivity may play a role in phonetic change. Further progress in understanding the link between speech perception and production mayalsoshed light on the mechanisms underlying the first stages of SDA. Our results add to those from a growing body of studies evidencing that a certain phonetic flexibility is maintained throughout adulthood.

Full textThe founding principles on which western education systems hinge have been the subject of much debate for decades. Studies have shown important shortcomings in the system that remain to bead dressed (Giroux, 1988; Koehler et Kim, 2012; Shields, 2003). It is therefore essential to consider structuring avenues that could alleviate them. In order to contribute to this reflection, this thesis, set within the field of educational administration, ponders innovative educational practices in order to better understand what prevents or supports pedagogical innovation in schools. To that end, the methodology is based in a participant observation of a case study with an ethnographic approach as part of the international project Intercultural Education for Environment and SustainableDevelopment (IEESD): Young people’s rapport to scientific knowledge, territories and their ecocitizen commitment at the end of secondary school in France and Quebec led by Barbara Baderand Jean-Marc Lange (2017-2020, FRQSC-ANR). Data are collected via audio-recordings, a journal with field notes and different documents relating to students’ reflections. This research particularly focuses on the implementation process in Quebec City, with 19 high school students in Grade 11 and in collaboration with two female teachers. The main contribution of this research is to describe the emerging elements that support and hinder educational innovation as well as the reflections that accompany its implementation, with an emphasis on the school administration leadership and its transformative role. Through its observations of educational activities, and descriptions of the contrast between the student and teacher interview content, this research contributes to the reflection on innovative and emancipatory educational practices, as well as to the development of avenues that seem most promising to support the implementation of this type of educational innovation.

Full textPolypharmacy, or the simultaneous use of several medications by the same person, is a growing situation around the world. It can lead to many negative health consequences. Given the lack of information in individuals under 65 years of age, this study was conducted to estimate the polypharmacy prevalence and to identify its associated factors in the adult population aged 18 to 64 covered by the public drug insurance plan in Quebec in 2017-2018 (fiscal year 2017). We conducted a descriptive cohort study over fiscal year 2017 with data from the Quebec Integrated Chronic Disease Surveillance System. All adults aged 18 to 64 years, covered by the public drug insurance plan for the entire year, were included. We estimated the prevalence of polypharmacy, which was defined as the use of five or more different medications in the studied year. Sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with polypharmacy were identified using robust Poisson regression models. Results were presented with 99% confidence intervals. Out of 1 597 627 individuals included, 498 220 (31.2%) were exposed to polypharmacy. In the multivariate model, factors associated with polypharmacy included: older age (e.g., 60-64 vs 18-29 years: Relative risk (RR) = 2.25 [99%CI: 2.23-2.27]), female sex (RR = 1.18 [1.17-1.18]), multimorbidity (e.g., multimorbidity score 2 vs 0: RR = 1.49 [1.48-1.18]), and high health care utilisation in the year of analysis and the previous year (e.g., 5 visits to general practitioner vs. 0 visits: RR = 2.85 [2.83-2.88]; 5 specialist visits vs. 0 visit: RR = 2.24 [2.22-2.25]). Nearly one-third of adults under age 65 covered by the public drug insurance plan in Quebec in 2017 were exposed to polypharmacy. To ensure better control of inappropriate polypharmacy with aging, optimizing medication at the onset of chronic diseases is needed.

Full textIn research and government institutions, socio-professional integration is well known as one of the main integration catalysts for immigrants. Likewise, Quebec government chooses most of its immigrants depending on their socio-professional integration potential on Quebec’s job market. This potential is measured, among others, according to the level of education. Yet, numerous immigrants enter Quebec with very few years of study. While many scholars investigate highly qualified immigrant’s integration processes, little is known about low qualified immigrant’s integration processes. This qualitative study specifically aims to explore the professional integration experience of low qualified immigrants by using the transition theory’s concepts. The data was collected during interviews with seven low qualified immigrants engaged in a socio-professional integration program. It allowed a better understanding of the motivations driving these people to enter the labour market with support from a socio-professional integration program, to identify personal and environmental attributes favorizing this process and to explore adaptations enabling its orderly conduct

Full textThe purpose of this action research was to investigate the dynamics of health education in elementary schools. Many physical educators remain preoccupied by children’s health and lifestyle. They are looking for efficient ways to develop and implement learning tasks that would promote a healthy and active lifestyle among their pupils. This study was conducted in collaboration with four experienced practitioners and a consultant/researcher. Four student groups were involved; children were aged between 7 and 10 (n = 102). The ecological model served as a conceptual frame of reference to describe the nature, the content and the development of health learning tasks, and to identify factors that would explain pupils’ level of cooperation during the teaching/learning process. Data were collected by means of the researcher’s observational notes, interviews with the physical educators and the pupils, and analyses of pupils’ productions. An inductive analysis of the data shows that the practitioners make use of two types of learning tasks in order to bring the pupils to adopt a healthy lifestyle and to develop knowledge about it. They use, among other strategies, a type of contract to help children engage by themselves into a modification process of their lifestyle over a period of many months. Many factors might explain the pupils’ degree of cooperation. The accountability system acts as a support in their self-management process and they choose to involve themselves without exchanging grades for performance. Furthermore, they receive social support and acknowledgment from adults who are aware of their efforts and actions. Results also indicate that practitioners’ knowledge and beliefs play a central role in the decision making process as it relates to the planning and implementation of learning tasks in health education at the elementary school level.

Full textA critical discourse on the contemporary public school systems denounces the loss of transcendent teaching ideals, which would manifest itself in the weakening authority of the pedagogical tradition, and by gradually forgetting the emancipator and reflexive vocation of education. As a starting point for this thesis, three elements (public education, transcendent authority and teaching ideals) helped us understand the sense of the Québécois state education for its founders. Inspired by work of Émile Durkheim and Max Weber, we compare the original ideals of the Québécois state education with an ideal type of the modern teaching ideal, based on reflections from Rousseau, Condorcet and Hegel. This ideal supports both the valorization of an active human autonomy (in modern philosophy) and the trust in the benefits of human freedom (in western liberalism, questioning any abusive authority). The ideal of civilisation in constant evolution, however, maintains the authority of teaching’s tradition as an essential source of reflexivity, and thus for its role in acquiring wisdom. The analysis of the ideals expressed in school projects and laws from 1789 to 1875, and of the authority implementing them, highlighted the prevalence of a concern for the political society in development. This society was characterized by the awareness of multiple identity attachments and the distance with European metropolises. With each new law, the tolerance between Catholics and Protestants, and the acceptance of the linguistic differences between French-speaking and English-speaking people were maintained, leading to a tight separation between two cultural communities. In spite of this growing division, these laws enforced the ideal of the state education common to the French-speaking and English-speaking liberals by creating higher degree schools following elementary education, as a stepping-stone towards classical colleges. This ideal combined the utilitarian and universal intellectual vocations of public education. For the French Canadians, this was a mean of collective emancipation in the political society and towards the evolution of civilization. The teaching authority of the State remained quite limited until it was gradually granted to the religious authorities.

Starting from the 2006 controversy about the History and Citizenship Education program at the senior high school level, this thesis focuses on the aims and issues associated with teaching the history of Quebec. More specifically, we examine the sources of the controversies surrounding the reforms of Quebec's high school history programs from the creation of the Parent Commission (1961) until the creation of the Beauchemin-Fahmy-Eid Committee (2013); by focusing on three main steps: consultation, program development, and feedback and/or evaluation. Our analysis is based on eighteen interviews with key stakeholders, public and private records, public consultation briefs, government documents and newspaper articles. To analyze this corpus, we applied a model to identify the main issues at the heart of the 2006 controversy, each at the center of a confrontation between two global or sectoral standards. This model, as well as analytical frameworks for observing the political game surrounding program development, falls within the field of cognitive and neo-institutionalist approaches to educational policy analysis. Lastly, our results suggest that while some of the controversies surrounding the reforms of Quebec's high school history programs are caused by a gap between the standards required by stakeholders in this field and the repositories that underlie official documents, some derive from more organizational, structural, professional and material problems, such as the compulsory nature of the program or the number of hours devoted to its teaching. This leads us ultimately to a reflection on the source of the changes of frames of reference in our society. Full textSexual education (SE) research conducted at the turn of the 21st century in Quebec and elsewhere in the West, shows that a particular attention has been devoted to the prevention of sexually-related social problems of “at risk” populations. Women and girls are at the heart of the concerns. On the one hand, SE interventions tend to give greater responsibility to girls in the “management” of their sexuality, and on the other, the central role played by women (mothers, practitioners) in SE is largely demonstrated. What do women think of SE and what are their experiences of transmission and appropriation of sexual knowledge? This interdisciplinary thesis, essentially qualitative and grounded on a constructivist and feminist (standpoint theory) epistemology, is about the social representations (SR) of teenage SE in Quebec at the turn of the 21st century, in the context of the school reform which led to the withdrawal of the official SE school program. Thirty women members of six interest groups concerned by issues related to sexuality (M = 39.9 y.o.), as well as 10 mothers (M = 49.2 y.o.) and 10 daughters (M = 19.4 y.o.), for a total sample of 50 participants, respectively participated in focus groups and individual semi-directed interviews. All the participants also responded to a word association task. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of content showed that the RS of SE organized themselves around eight agents (school, family, other practitioners, youth, peers, media, Church, State), and six dimensions (didactical, reproductive/sociosanitary, sexual, affective/relational, axiological/ethical, social/psychosociological). Some convergences and divergences between the interest groups and the mothers and the daughters were observed. Results from the qualitative analysis, supported by a factorial correspondence analysis, highlighted two principles which organized the participants’ positions towards the content of the SR: one axis of sexual freedom versus of sexual control, and one axis which implied a social/political vision of sexuality versus an individual/private vision of sexuality. Twelve anchoring variables of the participants’ positions were found; six of sociological type, six of psychological/psychosociological type. Recommendations for research and intervention are presented.

Full textThis enquiry explores the cultural, representations of adult immigrants from different cultural backgrounds learning French in Montreal in various post-secondary institutions sanctioned by the ministere de l'Immigration et des Communautes culturelles du Quebec (MICC). This study uses quantitative and qualitative survey instruments in order to examine the cultural representations of these immigrants in relation to their integration, their linguistic, cultural and social practices, a new definition of their cultural identity, their reactions in instances of intercultural contact as well as their motivation to study French. In total, 110 immigrants answered our written questionnaire and 14 of them participated in an interview.
Findings suggest that the participants generally hold positive cultural representations towards the French language and French-speaking Quebecois. The study indicates that immigrants are mostly looking for informal French learning experiences within their host society. Moreover, participants acknowledge that learning and mastering French is very important for them, both to interact with French-speaking Quebecois, and to obtain a good job in Quebec. Findings related to the immigrants' cultural identity reveal that they seem to experience a "me-them" cultural duality in their host province.
The implications of this study are mainly related to the importance of emphasizing the informal learning of the French language so that immigrants can become better integrated into the French-speaking society. Further study perspectives could include the development of French language programs and the content of the French courses offered by the MICC, the use of different data collection methods as well as the participation of immigrants from specific cultural origins.

Full textAt the core of this study is the belief that, with a better knowledge of the profile and the needs of students who have difficulty in history, we will be able to help them more effectively. We studied some factors (among other things: difficulties with understanding and writing text, problems like dyslexia or ADHD, test anxiety and afterschool employment) and some theories from historical didactic to understand the perceptions of the causes of the failure at the ministerial uniform examination of students who chose to enroll in a summer class of “History and Citizenship Education” to earn another chance at this evaluation. During summer 2014 and 2015, we collected opinions from 160 students enrolled in four different summer schools in “History and Citizen Education” after a failure at the 4th secondary’s ministerial uniform examination. Our results indicate that most of the students who failed declared having difficulties in writing and understanding texts (in their native language). Some factors (dyslexia, ADHD, test anxiety and after-school employment) seem also to have a negative impact on success at the ministerial uniform examination. A conception of history based on memorisation seem to confuse most of this population at the evaluation. Keywords: History and Citizenship Education, uniform examination, history didactics, failure, summer school, difficulty in reading comprehension, difficulty writing, trouble, relationship to knowledge, memorization.

Full textThe actual portrait of the health behaviours of young adults reveals alarming data about the physical activity level (Colley, Garriguet, Janssen, Craig, Clarke & Tremblay, 2011). To help them adopt increase their physical activity level, it seems appropriate to set up interventions that mobilize the action of their peers (Canadian Institute for Research on Fitness and Lifestyle, 2014; 2015). They seem to give them special importance when the time comes to adopt healthy lifestyle habits (DuBois & Karcher, 2014). Therefore, peer mentoring seems a promising avenue. Although the characteristics of this type of intervention have been documented in the literature, few studies have evaluated its effects in mentees (Sallis, Calfas, Nichols, Sarkin, Johnson, Caparosa, Thomson & Alcaraz, 1999; Boyle, Mattern, Lassister & Ritzler, 2011) and even fewer have done so with mentors (Lubans, Morgan, Aguiar & Callister, 2011). From this perspective, the present study had two objectives: 1) to evaluate the effects of a peer mentoring program in college settings on the practice of physical activity, physical condition, eating behaviours, consumption of fruits and vegetables. and the sense of personal effectiveness of mentees and mentors; 2) explore the moderating role of gender and participants' initial level of physical activity on the effects of the program. These objectives were investigated using a study with a quasi-experimental design using 104 young adults (mentors n = 38, non-mentors n = 33, mentees n = 21 and non-mentees n = 12). Questionnaires as well as physical tests made it possible to measure the main variables. The covariance analyzes show that at the end of the intervention, mentees adopted fewer behaviours aimed at gaining weight than non-mentees, while mentors adopted fewer behaviours aimed at losing weight than non-mentors. In addition, moderation analyzes reveal effects in men regardless of their initial level of physical activity but not in women. In fact, 1) mentee men exhibit better estimated maximal volume of oxygen consumption (VO₂ max) than non-mentee men, 2) male mentors show a lower body mass index (BMI) than non-mentor men and 3) male mentors report more behaviours aimed at gaining weight than non-mentor men. However, although our results suggest these effects, it seems essential to us to interpret them with caution due to some methodological limitations, in particular the small sampling. We often see them as tendencies to take in count for future research. However, our results suggest that we must consider sex of participants when time comes to orient, implement, and operationalize mentoring programs, particularly for the mentors.

Full textOver the past two decades, practical training seems to have become a key factor in ensuring the skills development of future Québec elementary and secondary teachers in a professionalizing perspective. This collaborative research has three main phases from which we were inspired to write three articles. These three phases are linked to the object of doctoral research: the development, by trainers of student-trainees, of a development trajectory for professional competence. Designing teaching-learning situations for Four internships within the baccalaureate in high school education. The first phase focuses on the perceptions of student-trainee trainers on the development and formative evaluation of the four professional competencies related to the act of teaching. Through an electronic questionnaire sent to 352 trainers, 52 of whom responded, we wanted to identify their perceptions before initiating the research. This in order to obtain working leads in relation to the choice of professional competence that would be flattened by the co-production of a development trajectory. The second phase corresponds to the cosituation of collaborative research. We analyzed the discourse of seven trainers in the negotiation of meaning they led to define the concept of professional competence and competence in the design of learning situations. Finally, the last stage corresponds to the co-operation and the co-production of the object, ie the development of a development trajectory accompanied by professional situations in which vocational competence will be mobilized as well as the resource domains available to student- Trainees. The last article analyzes the content of the three meetings that took place with the student-trainee trainers to arrive at the co-production of the course. In addition to the development trajectory, the results give rise to the challenges encountered by student-trainee trainers in their accompanying work: their representations of the professional competences linked to the act of teaching are not shared Given the few moments they have to discuss. The results also demonstrate the need to negotiate the meaning of their representations in order to develop the development trajectory. In addition, the two articles present an experiential look at the two communities of practice established during this research and present the challenges faced with the trainers.

Full textDifferentiated instruction is a learning and teaching philosophy which aims to maximise student learning for all, especially for students with disabilities. This concept has been the object of many studies and is encouraged by the Québec government and school authorities. However, its use in the classroom is still marginal, especially in higher education. Meanwhile, the student population with learning disabilities or mental disorders that require adapted services has been steadily rising in the last fifteen years in colleges and universities in Québec. This changing reality brings to light the diverse needs of these students, forcing school management and teachers to adapt their methods to promote the success of all students. Teachers from a CEGEP in Québec city were interviewed in order to find out what knowledge and attitudes these teachers have about differentiated instruction and students with disabilities. Another objective of the study was to find out which teaching strategies they use in class to determine if these correspond to differentiated instruction. The results from these interviews show that participants, although they have some knowledge of good teaching strategies to use in order to encourage student success, still manifest a lack of knowledge regarding differentiated instruction and the conditions that can affect their students’ learning. Furthermore, they hold many false beliefs that lead them to have mostly negative attitudes towards differentiated instruction and students with disabilities. This study supports the literature on the subject, which shows that there is still a long way to go before differentiated instruction becomes standard practice in CEGEP classrooms.

Full textOver-consumption of salt is a worrying phenomenon on a global scale and is responsible for a growing number of health problems. Indeed, due to its close relationship with high blood pressure, over-consumption of salt is a major risk factor in the development of cardiovascular disease. It is therefore essential for the nurse to achieve a comprehensive understanding of salt consumption in order to develop effective nursing interventions in the management of this eating behaviour. Roy's adaptation model guided this study, which had three objectives:1) to characterize the taste sensitivity (detection and recognition thresholds) to salt in an asymptomatic adult population aged 35 to 60 years, 2) to analyze the relationship between these detection and recognition thresholds and salt consumption, and 3) to explore whether taste sensitivity, salt consumption and the relationship between the two can be altered by gender, age and body composition. To achieve these objectives, detection and recognition thresholds were estimated among participants using a so-called forced choice technique of 1 out of 3 adapted from ASTM. Salt consumption was estimated by 24-hour urinary sodium measurement, as well as three self-reported methods: a discretionary salt intake questionnaire (DSS),a high salt food consumption frequency questionnaire (Na-FFQ), and a 3-day journal. The results obtained show that the salt consumption of Quebec adults in the study is almost twice the maximum tolerable values and at least three times higher than the adequate intake (values recommended by Health Canada), indicating, according to Roy's model, an ineffective behavioural response in this population. Detection and recognition thresholds are associated with salt consumption, but only for measures indicating longer-term nutrient consumption, such as FFQ and discretionary salt, by suggesting an existing relationship between inputs and outputs according to Roy's adaptation model. Salt consumption by most measures used, as well as the detection threshold, is higher for men than for women. Finally, salt consumption and taste thresholds vary according to age and body composition. In conclusion, this research project suggests a relationship between certain sensory properties of salt and its consumption, as well as the influence of factors such as gender and age on this relationship. However, future studies will be necessary to better weight the impact of the taste thresholds assessed in this study with other sensory and hedonic properties, as well as with the multiple other factors that may influence this consumption.
