Abstract:
Thesis (MTech. degree in Education.)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2009.<br>The improvement of the teaching-learning process in schools is enhanced by the involvement of parents in their children's learning. Parental involvement has the capacity to create a partnership between the most important role players in the education system, namely; teachers, parents and learners. According to this approach, parents are the most effective and reliable individuals who play a significant part in their children's education. The aim of this study is to investigate the nature of parental involvement in

Has there been a decline in parent involvement in the schools and if so, is that decline part of the schools' problem? Should parents step in when schools are faltering? Should schools that seek to improve themselves reach out to parents to help? What can parents contribute to the education of their children, at home and in schools? However illuminating the answers might be, these questions are hardly being addressed. Even with adeq

Black urban schools in South Africa are frequently beset by problems such as inadequate facilities and resources; poor motivation among teachers and pupils; poor family relations and a high incidence of violence. Against this background and in view of evidence that effective parent involvement in education addresses many of these problems, this study explored parent involvement in black urban communities. A literature study investigated existing theories and models of parent involvement; the urbanisation of and educational provision for black people in South Africa in historical perspective

This is further emphasized by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that every child has the inherent right to life, and the State shall ensure, to the maximum, child survival and development. Beside the State, the parents also have the primary responsibility for a child's upbringing (UN Convention, 1998). The South African constitution is regarded as one of the best in the world. In general, a particularly complicated and difficult relationship has existed between parents and educators, due in part, to the fact that educators have always been seen as the experts and proverbial holders of knowledge in the educational process while parents have been seen to be peripheral to this process. This inequality is seen to be problematic as a child's significant learning is increasingly understood to occur in both the home and school contexts.
