Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to analyse what being a mediator teacher means or is likely to mean in children education. This investigation is based on i) Vigotski's concept of semiotic mediation, ii) on the concept of signs developed by Bakhtin; iii) on the studies of early childhood Sociology, and, finally, iv) on the theoretical texts that approached the topic between the 1990s and the year 2000. Focusing mainly on the relationship among individuals, this study seeks to investigate the types of mediations which occur between adults and children in the school environment. The research was carried out with two different classes of four and five- year-old children pupils, respectively, in a state school of Early Childhood Education and Primary School, with the purpose of comprehending how children and adults perceive themselves and perceive their actions in that particular environment. The field work provided a broad understanding of the mediating signs existing in the relationship between children and adults, their recurrences and also the differences in the types of mediation that occur in the every-day interaction in each group. The mediations identified between the adults and the children in group A (fouryear- old children) and B (five-year-old children) are: the organising mediations; challenging mediations, encountered in inter personal communication with their peers; informative mediations, and instructive mediations which position the teachers as models to be immitated. As for the mediations occurring when adults and children are engaged in joint activity, it could be noticed that mediation was necessary in situations in which children often requested the adults as a support to appproach problems that they were not be able to solve by themselves. There was also the kind of mediation which could be found in the adults' speeches and attitudes, regardless of their presence. Finally, it could be seen that some mediations were beyond the adult model. Yet, in all these relations, the signs have proved to be crucial tools, in that they reveal important ideas and concepts that enable us to discuss and reflect on the school practices regarding small children.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to create an integrative paradigm for education based on music as metaphor and mediator. It proposes a meta-frame of inquiry to establish a meta-contextual perspective from within which a self-reflexive reframing process is expected to emerge. A system of ideas is presented, consisting of key concepts drawn mainly from the systems worldview and speculative musicology. From these, metaphoric maps are devised as a guide for mediating the proposed ideas in education contexts. It is an attempt to inspire metaphoric, aesthetic and intuitive modes of understanding and experiencing the world, along with the explanatory, which can affect a profound epistemological shift in the way we frame our inquiry.

Abstract:
The Appalachian region has long been regarded as an economically disadvantaged area, with a lower percentage of individuals pursuing higher education than in the nation as a whole . Improving the educational status of residents of Appalachia may foster some economic transition in the region, shifting the employment focus from an unskilled labor emphasis to more professional and career opportunities. Better understanding of the influences in the decision processes of Appalachian students is needed in order to design and implement intervention programs to increase enrollment in higher education. The concept of possible selves is introduced as a way to examine individuals' goals and beliefs about themselves in future contexts. Other factors (academic preparation, family, and culture) influencing the decision regarding college attendance were considered and evaluated in relation to possible selves. A model was developed to examine the influences of academic preparation, family, and culture on Appalachian students' educational goals and aspirations, as they are mediated by possible selves. It was hypothesized that the mediated influences model sufficiently predicts students' plans for college attendance. Statistical analysis and a revision of the original model were conducted, and results indicate that the model was adequately supported. Interpretations for these results were offered, and implications and limitations of the study were discussed.

Abstract:
Studies have demonstrated the positive impacts of both parent and adolescent religiosity on adolescent outcomes; however, the relationships among these variable have not been studied. Our study was conducted to assess whether adolescent religiosity mediates the relationship between parent religiosity and adolescent emotional and behavioral health outcomes. A sample of 491 late adolescents ages 18–22 completed surveys that assessed their parents’ religious practices, their own religious practices, deviant behaviors, and internalizing behaviors. Findings suggest that adolescent religiosity mediates the relationship between parents’ religiosity and adolescent health outcomes such as drug and alcohol use and depression.

Abstract:
The current study investigated the relationship between racial identity and academic achievement of biracial high school students and whether academic self-concept mediated the relationship. Data from the National Institute of Child Health and Development- Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development was examined. A structural equation model with two groups was used to assess if academic self-concept is a mediator for the relationship between racial identity and academic achievement. Results suggest that academic self-concept in Math or English did not mediate the relationship between racial identity and scores on the WJ-R Passage Comprehension and Applied Problems subtest for both groups of biracial high school students. In addition, racial identity did not have a significant effect for both groups of biracial students on academic self-concept in English and Math. The insignificant findings from the current study highlight that race and ethnicity do not impact Black and White biracial high school students or Latin and White biracial high school students’ educational success and this information should be applied by educators, parents, and families as they help biracial children navigate through their educational experience.

Abstract:
Mental illness affects more women than men in the United States. Poor mental health in reproductive-age women has negative implications on population health. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine the relationship between household structure and frequency of mental distress, with consideration of the mediation social-emotional support provides for reproductive-age women. The social ecological model was the theoretical framework for this research, in which frequency of mental distress related to the individual-level of the human-environment interaction construct. Household structure and social-emotional support were examined at the relationship-level. Pearson's correlation coefficient and linear regression were used to conduct a cross-sectional analysis of the 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data set with a total sample size of 65,269 women, 18-44 years old. The confounding variables, health care access, race, income, marital status, number of children in the household, and pregnancy status, were included in the analysis. Although social-emotional support significantly influenced both household structure and frequency of mental distress, significance was not found between household structure and frequency of mental distress indicating that mediation does not exist. This study provides researchers and practitioners information about household structure that should be considered when designing innovative, nonprofessional support programs at the community-level. Positive social change implications include an understanding of the relationship between complex variables associated with social-emotional support, which could improve community support programs focused on mental health wellness of reproductive-age women.

Abstract:

Following the passage of the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill in 2008, U.S. military service members and veterans have been enrolling at institutions of higher education at rapidly increasing rates (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2014). As a result, campus administrators and mental health professionals are seeking new and better ways to support this growing population (Coll & Weiss, 2015). The few existing studies on the mental health of military-affiliated students suggest they feel isolated on campus (DiRamio, Ackerman, & Mitchell, 2008) and are more likely than civilian peers to experience depression, posttraumatic stress (PTS), and suicidal ideation (Barry, Whiteman, McDermid Wadsworth, & Hitt, 2012; Rudd, Goulding, & Bryan, 2011). The current study explored the role of two different types of on-campus peer social support—military and civilian—in mediating the relationship between adult attachment orientation and posttraumatic stress, as well as its correlate, hazardous alcohol use. Data was collected via Web-based, self-report survey from 221 military and veteran students across the United States. Latent variable path analyses indicated that civilian peer social support mediated the relationship between attachment anxiety and PTS, but only partially, underscoring the enduring role of adult attachment orientation in the response to trauma. Psychometric issues limited the testing of models that included military peer social support. Results are discussed in the context of potential on-campus counseling interventions and resources.

Abstract:
There has been a steadily growing role of non-formal education within science teaching. Thus, the presence of professionals is crucial for promoting the interaction of science with the public. Consequently, the formation of these professionals is essential to enable them to act effectively in the development of activities at educational sites. Accordingly, this case study aims at examining the process of formation of mediators in the area of non-formal education in science, using the Theory of Community of Practice, coined by Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger. More specifically, the analysis of the mutual engagement element, as proposed by the authors as one of the key points in the participation of members in a community of practice, may contribute to the initial training of mediators. To undertake this study, it was necessary to first determine whether the chosen place of study, Estação Biologia (EB) of the University of São Paulo, could be considered a community of practice. For this, the identification of three basic elements were required: shared repertoire, mutual engagement and joint enterprise. The data that were collected from documentary analysis, semi-structured registered interviews, recorded visits and personal observations, showed that all the three basic elements were present in EB, and thus it can be considered a community of practice. In this community, the flexibility of functions, and the establishment of internal negotiations, promote increased mutual engagement that is directly involved in the transformation of a peripheral into a central mediator, and consequently, their training both to act as a mediator and how to do so professionally. Considering that by increasing engagement in the practice of community, this mediator appropriates knowledge that can be used inside and outside the EB.

Given the increasing empashis put on the cultural mediation process in the context of Brazilian museological institutions, the questions relative to the training of the educator/mediator; that is, the professional responsible for establishing the mediation process; acquired a distinct importance. Working as an educator/mediator in a multitude of cultural institutions since 1997, and having worked, also, as a formal education teacher, the author intended to present a paper portraying her experience as a teacher in the Technical course of Museology, at ETEC/Parque da Juventude, responsible for the curricular components Mediation in Museums and Laboratory of Mediation Practices in Museums. In order to list the subjects and pedagogical strategies that could contribute to a larger qualification of the professional museology technician, the questions arisen about the topics, both theoretical and practical, the form of presentation and articulation between them, as well as its suitability to the professionals that will perform their work in museums of different typologies, were the main challenges regarding the formulation of a lesson plan, put in practice from the second semester of 2013 to the second semester of the year 2015. The work reported was developed alongside five classes tended to during the specified period and covers four practical lines formulated, the themes of each lesson - theoretical and practical - and the suggested bibliography; the partnerships with cultural institutions, the orientation of course completion assignments and the lectures with professionals from the Education in Museums field.

On research that link rising levels of violence, indiscipline and conflicts in the school environment, the State Government of São Paulo created the program entitled "School System Protection" in order to combat indiscipline and violence within schools and guarantee the physical integrity and property of students, staff and servants of the state public network. In the set of measures designed under the said program, the Department of São Paulo State Education - SEE / SP created a new role for the teacher of basic education, namely, Professor of School Mediator and Community, hereinafter called the PMEC. With this research, we became interested in investigating the appearance of the context of this "new professional" under the state public network, since the conception of this new role, presented by the São Paulo State Education (SEE / SP) and matters relating to the selection process and performance in school units. For this purpose, document analysis was carried out (legal, regulatory texts, work plans of the PMEC and occurrences of books at schools), work observation conducted by PMEC in a state school for a semester and semi-structured interviews with PMEC the selected school and PMEC working in schools located in regions with similar levels of vulnerability to the selected school. At the end of the investigation we proved our hypothesis that this new function is another way of reconfiguration of the teaching profession, among the existing ones, which profoundly changes the teacher's role in schools and mischaracterizes the profession. To support our analysis we turn to authors who discuss issues such as control, intolerance, indiscipline and conflicts (ABRAMOVAY, 2005; CHARLOT, 2002; 2005; DUBET, 2004; FOUCAULT, 1996, 1997; JARES, 1997), work and teaching profession (TARDIF, 2002; TARDIF, LESSARD e LAHAYE, 1991; TENTI FANFANI, 2000), as well as researchers who have dedicated themselves to the themes presented by the "School System Protection" program from different theoretical perspectives.

The present research analyzes the initial pedagogical evaluation for the identification of the specific educational needs of students with intellectual deficiency of elementary education in the Municipal Education Network of Goiânia. The objective of the research was to identify how this initial assessment process occurs and whether this evaluation contributes to the learning of these students. The theoretical perspective of the research was based on the Historical Materialism Dialectic for the apprehension of the historical reality in which the student with intellectual deficiency is inserted; In the Historical-Cultural Theory and in the Foundations of Defectology that conceives the student with intellectual deficiency as a subject that has qualitative specificities; In the conceptions of inclusion and in the right to school of all and in the diagnostic, formative and mediator evaluation as a subsidy for the attendance of the specific needs of the students. The research field was composed of 05 (five) schools of the Municipal Network of Goiânia, each representing a Regional Education Coordination of said network. The research participants were 10 (ten) teachers - 02 (two) teachers per school - and in the schools that have the multifunctional resource room, there were 01 (one) regular classroom teacher and 01 (one) Resource room and at the school that does not have the resource room, 01 (one) regular classroom teacher and 01 (one) coordinating teacher participated. The instrument of data collection was the semi-structured interview, followed by transcription of the content. The methodology used was the Content Analysis and Bardin Thematic Analysis technique. The research revealed that the initial pedagogical evaluation carried out by teachers does not contribute to the learning of these students. A theoretical-methodological contradiction was identified in the participants' discourses, evidencing that even at a theoretical level, the inclusion of the school is not clear and internalized by the teachers, and the delegation to other professionals is the initial pedagogical evaluation of students with intellectual disabilities. The research pointed out the need to carry out a diagnostic, formative and mediator evaluation, with action in the Proximal Development Zone of the student with intellectual disability. As an educational product, the research presents an Assessment Framework for the initial pedagogical evaluation of students with intellectual disabilities, aiming to offer the indicative teachers to perform a diagnostic, formative and mediator evaluation.

The text presented is pinned down research carried out over the institution of the role of the School and Community Mediator Teacher - SCMT, held from 2009 to 2017 in the State of São Paulo and legitimized by the SE-1 Resolution, from January 20th, 2011, which provides for the School and Community Mediator Teacher (SCMT)'s attributions in accordance with the School Protection System (SPS). The objectives are both historical rescue of the role's creation and analysis on the aspects regarding the practice of this professional, relating the context of its playing with the possibilities of mediation; as well as the role played by this professional within the construction of the School Units teachers', students' and employees' autonomy and protagonism. The methodology has been settled down bibliographical studies and qualitative data collection, by means of semi-structured and essay questions applied to the SCMTs who already act in the state schools from Marília, Garça and Vera Cruz. The theoretical foundation is referenced by scholars who regard the historical and dialectical materialism, the attributions and conceptualizations pointed out by Judy H. Mullet e Lorraine Stutzman Amstutz, in their research performed over the Restorative Disciplines for Schools, as well as over the conceptions of Culture of Peace, which have been formulated in a more apprehensible and accessible way from the United Nations Organization's General Assembly 53/243 Resolution on, from September, 1999, which was titled: Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. The hypothesis is that the knowledge of the experiences correlated to the School and Community Mediator Teacher's day-to-day role and its academic education contribute to the setting of the function, which demands full formation and with specific pieces of knowledge, however, it is stood out that there is value on this subject's academic education. As a result from the research, it can be stated that the undergraduate forming in Pedagogy, Letters, Psychology, or even in a curricular license, only in this sense, is incomplete or fragmented for the effective acting on the needs of the school environment and its students and teachers, turning out to be important the development of specific competences throughout this period of professional experience. The theoretical studies indicate the need of these mediator teachers' full, extended and continuous formation, in a way they contribute in a consistent and conscious manner, standing out the citizen and autonomous formation for the school environment actors (students and teachers), once these will continuously be acting in several of the society's environments and it is believed that such experiences taken off the school space might contribute for collaborative attitudes of participative and protagonist citizens. It is still out to inform over the decision-making of São Paulo State Government towards cutting down, at the end of 2016, the number of teachers who had been acting as SCMTs in the state schools. As a result of the research, it can be said that the training in undergraduate pedagogy or psychology is insufficient to effectively act on the needs of the school environment of teachers and their students, we think, for example, of the existence of Post-Graduation in Mediation of Conflicts, offered by one of the fronts of the Brazilian Society of Emotional Intelligence.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis examines inequality of educational opportunities (IEO) in the transition to higher education. IEO measures the difference in higher education entry rates across social groups. The theoretical framework lays on Boudon's decomposition of IEO into primary and secondary effects of stratification. Furthermore, the theoretical propositions of Maximally Maintained Inequality (MMI) and Effectively Maintained Inequality (EMI) were also assessed to gain further understanding of IEO. The longitudinal data for the empirical analysis was created for a student cohort by linking administrative records of Chile's national student register, standardised tests and higher education enrolment. The student cohort was followed through the 12-years of compulsory education up to the transition to higher education, a year after completing secondary education. The results from the empirical analysis showed that secondary effects were consistently predominant over primary effects, driving the overall IEO. On the other hand, controlling for school characteristics increased the relative importance of secondary effects. However, primary effects explained a large extent of IEO in the transition to traditional (most prestigious) universities, by the same token, in the transition to undergraduate programmes. Differences in parental education levels between secondary education completion and higher education transitions proved to be consistent with MMI. Likewise, the higher likelihood of less advantaged students to enrol in vocational colleges or vocational programmes, and the higher likelihood of advantaged students to enrol in traditional universities or undergraduate programmes, evidenced support for EMI. The modelling setting was based on non-linear mediation modelling, accounting for sample-selection in the student cohort, two-level cross-classification between primary and secondary schools, and multinomial outcomes for type of institution and programme. This thesis contributes to the educational attainment literature by finding evidence that, in emerging economies like Chile, educational inequality persists despite the sustained expansion of the educational system.

Abstract:
This study examined how technology-mediated distance education is used in special education courses in teacher preparation programs. The data are based on a 30-item survey administered to members of the Teacher Education Division of the Council for Exceptional Children, who identified themselves as serving in an instructional capacity within institutions of higher education. Technology-mediated instruction was characterized in terms course delivery methods and program attributes. An analysis of instructional design processes revealed that most instructors are largely autonomous and do not rely on a team-based approach. Most make use of course-design and management software. Training is linked to course strategy and evaluation, while experience is associated with implementation. Respondents emphasized communication and student feedback. While both users and non-users of distance education technology foresaw the increased use for course delivery in the future, a notable percentage (13%) of current users indicated a desire to discontinue use.

Abstract:
This research is contributed to the improvement of the Home Stay, a form of tourism recently appear in Thailand that allows the visitor to stay in a house of local family. Teaching French in a university within a touristic region, it appeared to us that this type of tourism would offer advantages not only to the region and but also to our students. We formulated the Home Stay for welcoming French or French-speaking visitors by contacting the village chiefs and the villagers as well as the others foreign visitors during our visits. We asked them to fill in a questionnaire, with the foreign visitors classified into three categories: French, French-speaking and Other, which we analyzed by statistical software SPSS. In conclusion, the results of the questionnaire data point to the necessity of the intercultural mediators. In letting the foreign visitors satisfy their curiosity about the villagers' traditional way of life, their works, their fetes and their customs, and responding to the desire of the villagers, it appears that these mediators could be required on a permanent basis, in the village. In turn, we propose a linguistic and intercultural program to our students towards the goal of becoming intercultural mediators. These two competencies are also necessary for the role of mediators in a Home Stay. In order to avoid cross-cultural and misunderstanding between the villagers and foreign visitors, it is necessary to emphasize the intercultural education and communication in this program. It would allow students to obtain three components of communication competency: knowledge, skills and attributes common to intercultural mediators

Abstract:
Thesis (MEd)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Recent national and international assessments single problem solving out as an important but problematic factor in the current mathematical capacities of South African learners. It is evident that the problem escalates as learners progress to the Intermediate Phase. Research indicates a significant link between metacognition and successful mathematical problem solving. From a Vygotskian sociocultural perspective which formed the theoretical framework of this study, metacognition can be regarded as a higher-order function developing through interaction within social and cultural contexts known as mediation. This qualitative collective case study, informed by an interpretivist paradigm, was designed to explore and compare how Foundation and Intermediate Phase mathematics teachers mediate metacognition during mathematical problem solving. It aimed to offer a deeper understanding of the process of mediation, the complex interplay between cognition and metacognition, and how teachers differentiate the mediation process to accommodate diversity among their learners. To address this, two cases were identified involving a sample of six mathematics teachers each of an urban primary school in the Western Cape Province. The first case was Foundation Phase teachers and the second Intermediate Phase teachers. Semi-structured individual interviews, non-participant classroom observations, and semi-structured focus group interviews were used as methods to gather and triangulate data. Themes that emerged from constantly comparing the data informed the findings. The findings suggest that there are cognitive, non-cognitive and contextual factors which could influence the quality and outcomes of the mediation of metacognition during mathematical problem solving in diverse classrooms. It emphasized the significance of the active role the teacher as a more knowledgeable other plays in the mediation process. Furthermore, it underlined the importance of giving learners challenging mathematical problems requiring metacognition within their zones of proximal development. It was also found that the teacher as mediator should not only have the necessary professional knowledge and strategies, but should also consider the affective factors, perceptions and reactions of learners, during the mediation process. Keywords: metacognition, mediation, mathematical problem solving, sociocultural theory, differentiated instruction, Foundation Phase teachers, Intermediate Phase teachers.
Sleutelwoorde: metakognisie, mediasie, wiskundige probleemoplossing, sosiokulturele teorie, gedifferensieerde onderrig, Grondslagfase-onderwysers, Intermediêre Fase-onderwysers.

Abstract:
This study investigated whether attendance at the Children Cope With Divorce program for divorcing parents was associated with differences in the litigation behavior of the parents consistent with a lowered level of conflict between the parties. 130 cases from Morgan County, Indiana, in which the parents attended the program were randomly selected and compared with 130 cases from the same county in which the parents did not attend the program. As a control, 130 cases from before, and 130 cases from after the date on which program attendance became a requirement in Morgan County, were randomly selected from Tipton County, Indiana, where divorcing parents do not attend a program.Measures of mean time in litigation (MTL) and of the numbers of 4 types of court petition were obtained for each of the 4 groups from court records. Four hypotheses predicting an association between program attendance and shorter MTLs and lower mean numbers of court petitions filed were tested. Hypotheses One and Two were tested by one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Hypothesis Three was tested by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Hypothesis Four was tested by 2 X 2 multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). All test results were nonsignificant. None of the hypotheses was supported.Possible reasons for the nonsignificant results are presented, as are limitations of the design and methodology. Other possible dependent variables which might be measured are described. The importance of collecting demographic data is mentioned. Limitations of the program studied in this project are discussed at length. In the absence of clear evidence of the effectiveness of any type of such program for divorcing parents, the courts must weigh the possible value of such a program against its cost. However, given our present state of knowledge about such programs, sponsors should select a program which presents a broad range of information.

Ntho-Ntho, Albertina Maitumeleng. "School principals mediating change : the case of religion in education." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/33001.

Abstract:
It has been the desire of the ANC government ever since it came to power in 1994 to develop a unity of purpose and spirit that cherishes and celebrates the diverse nature of the South African population in terms of culture, language and religion and to transform existing inequalities that are deep-rooted in South African educational history and religion in particular. In order to satisfy this desire, a whole plethora of legislation and policies was developed. Amongst the developments entailed in these laws and policies were religious rights and freedoms guaranteed to all South Africans as well as the establishment of democratic structures vested with powers to govern schools while school principals manage them. In terms of education legislation, one of the functions of the governing body of a school is to develop and adopt a school policy on religion (as per the study) which is accordingly implemented by the school principal. It is in the policy implementation stage that the school principal is expected to play a mediating role and resolve possible conflicts erupting due to different religious interestThis study is based on the assumption that the management and leadership training they received and the position they hold as school managers and leaders, enabled participating school principals to mediate the implementation of new religion policies. The research question driving this study was “How do school principals deal with implementation of the National Policy on Religion and Education in schools?” Informed by this question the focus of the study was to explore “how principals describe and experience their mediating role in implementing the religion policy within an existing religious context in schools”. Following a qualitative research approach a phenomenological research design was employed in order to understand and describe the meaning of the lived, felt and narrated experiences of school principals. Data were collected by means of narrative interviews where twelve school principals pursuing postgraduate studies with the University of Pretoria and who have been in education for at least ten years, told their religion in education stories. These stories were subsequently transcribed, analysed and interpreted to determine the impact of principals’ past religious experiences and their management training on their implementation of religion policies at their schools. This study found that in dealing with the National Policy on Religion and Policy (2003) implementation in schools, participating principals ignore the policy in preference of maintaining the status quo. When faced with conflicts related to religious interests, they partially sub-contracted into the policy. They did not seem to consider transformative mediation as a possible leadership strategy for conflict resolution in the existing religious context of schools. The study also found that amongst these principals, there were those who displayed a confident attitude, values of openness, generosity and integrity and had used their past religious experiences to transform the quality of conflict interaction in schools. My recommendation in this regard would therefore be threefold. One, Higher Education Institutions should provide appropriate training by introducing suitable courses that will yield adequate knowledge, skills and opportunities for professional attitude, value attainment and determination for continuous learning and development to principals as key change agents. Two, there is a need for these organizations to re-evaluate and re-organise existing courses for better recognition of transformative mediation as a leadership strategy to conflict resolution in schools. The provincial departments of education need to provide appropriate training for prospective principals as part of professional development programmes to address the essential needs pertaining to policy implementation that could create conflict in schools. Training in mediation of conflict would therefore be essential.

Tsheko, Toto. "Unfair labour practice relating to promotion in the public education sector." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/6050.

Full text
Abstract:
This topic deals with unfair labour practice relating to promotion and will focus mainly on the public education sector. The Labour Relations Act of 1956 and 1995, with respect to the concept of unfair labour practice, will be analysed. It is through this discussion that one appreciates how the concept of unfair labour practices has evolved in South African law. An attempt is made to define promotion and in this regard reference is made to cases decided upon by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) or the Labour Court (LC). Furthermore, promotion is defined within the context of public education and applicable legislation. Due regard must be to the employment relationship between the employer and the employee as well as compare the current employee’s job with the job applied to. Unfair conduct by the employer will be discussed within the context of promotion. The prerogative of the employer will be discussed with reference to case law and that discussion will include an analysis of various principles with regard to procedural and substantive fairness. Various remedies provided for in dispute resolution mechanism in line with the provisions of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995 and relevant case laws will also be discussed. The last chapter deals with how to strike a balance between employee rights (that is educators) and the rights of learners, in the context of promotion disputes. In this regard reference to case laws will be made. In general the topic will deal with unfair labour practice, definition of promotion including promotion of educators, unfair conduct of the employer, onus of proof, remedies and striking the balance between the rights of the learners and educators.

Josephs, Nikki L. "Using Peer-Mediated Fluency Instruction to Address the Needs of Adolescent Struggling Readers." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2010. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/epse_diss/60.

Full text
Abstract:
Teaching oral reading fluency is an important aspect of effective literacy instruction. Researchers have investigated a number of strategies shown to be effective with beginning readers; however, less empirical evidence is available for older, struggling readers. The secondary curriculum presents adolescent struggling readers with different challenges, including successful completion of higher level comprehension skill activities, high-stakes assessments, and limited classroom time with practice with oral reading fluency exercises. These conditions may lead to academic failure or school drop-out for students who have limited reading ability. An alternating conditions design (Kazdin, 1982) was used to examine the influence of peer-mediated fluency instruction (repeated reading and continuous reading) on the oral reading fluency and comprehension skills of five high school-aged struggling readers from an urban alternative high school setting. The three dependent variables measured were (a) words correct per minute, (b) number of errors, and (c) number of comprehension questions answered correctly. Results of the alternating treatments design indicate that all students increased their correct words per minute with implementation of peer-mediated repeated reading fluency instruction as compared to the peer-mediated continuous reading instruction. However, mixed results were found regarding accuracy of comprehension questions. Limitations were noted with regard to working within an alternative high school setting, variability in student outcomes, and the use of narrative text. Future research suggestions for using peer-mediated oral reading fluency instruction with students with and without disabilities in alternative high school settings are provided.

Abstract:
From images of distance education (DE) in advertisements to examples of extant DE theory and practice, and finally to a possible dystopia and utopia for DE, this dissertation investigates the rich representations at the intersection of feminism, pragmatism, and web based distance education. It is composed of three parts. The first part is the construction of a feminist-pragmatic theoretical and analytical tool, motivated by images of DE in commercial advertisements. These images include control of nature (and the natural body), gendered experience, transactions of bodies and tools, loss of bodies, and atomic individualism. In response to these images, the main unifying theme of the tool is organic holism where the world as a dynamic system connects with culture, biology, history, and context. It draws heavily on the work of John Dewey, Charlene Haddock Seigfried, Timothy Kaufman-Osborn, Shannon Sullivan, Nancy Fraser, Donna Haraway, Sandra Harding, and Carolyn Merchant in order to form a rich weaving useful to instructional technologists and philosophers of education. The second part explores three examples of extant web based distance education using this tool. Lastly, I explore alternatives to current instantiations of distance education including a dystopia and a melioristic option that I call sustainable technology.

Abstract:
This study explores the education and training required of family-law mediators as well as professional obstacles to further educational developments in the field. The interdisciplinary disputes occurring within the emergent family-mediation discipline and the issues of existing mediator education, the attitudes of family lawyers and mediators towards one another, and mediation's professionalization process, are examined through the eyes of mediators and family-lawyers practising in Greater London in 1987 and 1988. The basis for this study and its conclusions are: one hundred two extensive interviews with practising mediators; twenty interviews with advisors and senior representatives of all seventeen mediation services; seventeen interviews with registrars and court officials; eighty-eight responses to mediator questionnaires; one hundred fifty-three responses to solicitor questionnaires; visits to thirty-one mediation locations; and observation of sixty-one actual mediation sessions. The most important theoretical divisions among the mediation practitioners revolved around disputant autonomy, child advocacy, and therapy: the majority argued the importance to mediation of the first of these and the inappropriateness of the second and third. The study isolates and explores these divisions. Most practitioners isolated respect for disputant autonomy and conflict- resolution skills as the core attributes needed by mediators. Both the lawyers and non -lawyer mediators expressed reservations about the ability of others to engage in mediation. Most did not suggest limiting mediation to members of their own discipline. The study reveals the lack of justification for such limitations and suggests, instead, the importance of the mediator's personal characteristics. The study also reveals the educational short-comings of the practising mediators and the problematic tendency of untrained mediators to rely on methods emended from other disciplines. Both lawyers and mediators suggested fundamental changes and improvements in the education and training of family mediators.

Jaldemark, Jimmy. "Participation in a boundless activity : Computer-mediated communication in Swedish higher education." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Pedagogik, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-30351.

Full text
Abstract:
The general purpose of this thesis is to understand how participation in the activity of education relates to communication and tools. This purpose unfolds by drawing on possible conceivable consequences. In the fulfilment of this purpose communication, education, participation, and tools are analytically linked by a common denominator: human action. The commentary text expounds on these links, while the four included papers illustrate how these links operate in educational settings. The general purpose serves to frame a narrower purpose: a discussion of participation through computer-mediated communication in online settings of Swedish higher education. The theoretical departure derives from a transactional approach that embraces human action as an inseparable aspect of a dynamic whole, here defined as the activity of education. This activity is discussed in terms of its cultural, ecological, historical, and social aspects. This theoretical departure embraces ideas largely taken from ecological, pragmatic and sociocultural perspectives of human action. The papers include analyses of, variously, empirical material taken from interviews with students, online exchanges of utterances, syllabuses, and study-guides. Two of the papers are literature reviews. The findings indicate that participation in education is a complex boundless phenomenon that is best understood as a dynamic whole. In this whole, participation in education is culturally, ecologically, historically, and socially transformed by actions, agents, communication, tools, and the setting. In this thesis, concepts such as computermediated communication, communicative genres, dialogical intersections, and educational settings are utilised to reach a dynamic understanding. The dynamics of these findings, therefore, are a challenge to all dualistic conceptualisations of education, such as those building on the idea of learners operating in learning environments. Particularly, these findings challenge operationalisations of education that rely on computer-mediated communication and which build on the idea of so-called online learning environments. A more coherent understanding of participation in education is possible if educational research and design builds on a non-dualistic conceptualisation that includes the idea of participation being performed in a boundless activity.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The research was prompted by two main issues prevalent in South African education in the last decade. These were particularly the critical state of the schooling system, especially in the educationally disadvantaged schools (mainly ex-Department of Education and Training) and the relationship of the teacher to teaching and the related issue of teacher upgrading. The resultant effect was that the educationally disadvantaged communities became more and more disadvantaged over time because of decreasing mental stimulation and mental development. The answer lay in finding a theory of intellectual growth and development which takes into account the learning environment of the disadvantaged child. The Educational Support Services Trust (ESST) has been active in addressing this very issue since 1986. It provides appropriate learner-centred mediational texts to disadvantaged pupils around the country. These materials concentrate on the development of practical intelligence by relating leaming to everyday experience. The Teachers' Methodology Project was designed to change the teachers who were using the ESST materials from being disseminators of information to being managers of a learning-centred classroom environment. The idea was to change the way that teachers thought about teaching and learning. This was accomplished by sharing the methodology of the existing pupils' materials and theories of cognition and mediation with them so that they could become adept at mediating at the level of deconstruction of complex ideas and using this knowledge in the construction and development of their own learning materials, thereby contributing to the mental development of their pupils. My experience as a staff member of the ESST and my background in education provided an entry point to this research via Feuerstein et at's (1980,1991) criteria for mediation, Haywood's (1993) mediational teaching style and a range of other theories and ideas including group work and co-operative learning, graphic organisers, and the ESSTs own theory of mediatory text (Sinclair, 1991). These were consolidated into a learning-centred approach to teaching in which the learner, the teacher and the task become part of the total learning-centred environment. The research began as an investigation of the Teachers' Methdology Project (TMP) and an effort to track teachers' development but grew to include the development of the conceptual mediational framework on which the project was based. This resulted in the development of a classroom observation instrument which was used to evaluate how teachers mediated in their classrooms and how they interacted with pupils. The TMP was implemented through a series of workshops during which teachers examined their assumptions about teaching and learning: explored new avenues for facilitating learning; experienced a learning-centred approach to teaching; acquired new strategies for and knowledge of, theories and atttitudes to teaching and learning and were able to reflect on and practise newly acquired skills in a supportive collegial environment. The research employed a qualitative approach and therefore the documentation of the process took considerable effort. An experiential framework (Kolb, 1974) was used to analyse the process and the results. This mediational experiential framework resulted in a methodology which addressed teachers' attitudes and cognition in a life-related way, taking into account their personal knowledge and experience. The methodology is replicable and has been used in basic adult education and other settings. In addition, the methodology can contribute to the understanding of how Outcomes-based Education could be implemented in South Africa.

Abstract:

Private sector businesses employ performance pay compensation plans in order to incentivize increased employee effort. Legislation offers opportunities for school districts to experiment with performance pay plans in an attempt to encourage teacher effort, productivity, competition, and recruitment. Despite the potential benefits of performance pay, providing a task-contingent reward for an interesting activity has the tendency to undermine an individual’s intrinsic motivation for a task. This study sought to assess psychological ownership as a potential moderator for the undermining effect, which may shield an individual’s feelings of autonomy, competence, and relatedness, allowing for intrinsic motivation in light of a task-contingent reward. This study analyzed data from 127 undergraduates and graduate students enrolled at Long Island University, CW Post Campus and an additional 27 teachers from Brooklyn, New York. Full and trimmed path analyses were conducted on a series of Likert-type scales to test three primary hypotheses. The findings confirmed that a task-contingent reward undermined intrinsic motivation for an interesting task. This study’s psychological ownership intervention and the combination of the intervention with a task-contingent reward also negatively effected intrinsic motivation. Job-based psychological ownership, a measurement of feelings of possession, however, did positively effect intrinsic motivation providing evidence that feelings of psychological ownership lead to feelings of intrinsic motivation. This study contributes to the fields of psychological ownership theory and self-determination theory by presenting empirical evidence connecting these two theories. Recommendations are offered for the improvement of teacher motivation, job design, compensation and educational policy.

The primary purpose of this study is to investigate whether the use of textual Synchronous Computer Mediated Communication (SCMC) can help students improve oral language proficiency when compared with a group of students who engage in face-to-face oral and written practice. A second objective is to investigate how the use of synchronous computer mediated written practice motivates and enhances the students' learning of the language. The participants ( N =56) were 9 th and 10 th grade English-speaking students enrolled in a beginning Spanish class. A paired sample t test was conducted to evaluate whether SCM written exchanges or face-to-face written practice influence language production. The results indicated that the mean language production for CMC written exchanges ( M = 1.79, SD = .833) was significantly greater than the mean language production for face-to-face written exchanges ( M = 1.11, SD = .737, p = .002). Qualitative results suggests that engaging learners in authentic interaction with other students of slightly higher language proficiency through the use of textual synchronous technology enhances their language skills as well as their overall learning experience.

Abstract:

Peace Education strives to provide for the promotion and building of a peaceful society. A Peer Mediation Programme is one of the strategies designed to promote Peace Education in that it provides the skills for the resolution of conflict. The main objective of this evaluation research was to evaluate the conceptualisation, the design, the implementation and the impact of a Peer Mediation Programme that is being implemented at a primary school. The literature review was an in-depth study of the existing literature relating to conflict resolution and peer mediation. The main aspects covered by the literature were the nature of conflict and how it evolved and created meaning for itself. It also examined discipline and behaviour in the context of schools and the move towards alternative behavioural programmes at schools. It defined Peace Education and outlined the use of peer mediation as an alternative behavioural strategy, which could instil positive values and skills. It finally reviewed the benefits of alternative mediation programmes and the positive effects that it would have on the stakeholders involved in the programme. The research design used was Mouton's Logical model. The research was conducted. by using qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative methods included five focus group interviews and two individual interviews with all the relevant stakeholders who were associated with the programme. All the relevant documentation relating to the programme was examined and analysed. The quantitative method consisted of a questionnaire which all the mediators completed. The analyses of the data led to interesting findings. The Peer Mediation Programme was well conceptualised by the different stakeholders. There was the problem of 'dual roles' for mediators that impacted on the stakeholders' conceptualisation of the programme. The school had developed a unique design which was adapted to the culture of the school. The programme was well implemented and impacted positively on the school, the mediators, the parents and the community. Community involvement, however, was lacking. While the evaluation research revealed that the programme was successfully implemented, with positive results, it was recommended that the conceptualisation of the programme be expanded on and developed in order to improve the overall understanding of the programme. It was also recommended that the design should include all grades in an adapted programme. Parents also needed to become more involved in the programme.

Abstract:
Over the years, much attention has been given to copyright law in literature and as it pertains to textbooks and other original academic works. However, as the focus is narrowed to the copyright law as it relates to distance education within higher education, very little information or precedents can be looked to for guidance. For an institution of higher education involved in distance education, the problem demands that a model be developed specifically for universities to follow as they embrace distance education programs and course development. As the likelihood of lawsuits and grievances clearly exists, the motivation of faculty to create original works is potentially compromised when there is conflict between themselves and the universities who employ them. In addition, a set of guidelines in the form of a model lends a structural basis to university educators and administrators alike on which to formulate the process of developing distance education programs with a greatly reduced chance of legal incident. A case study design was chosen because it adds strength to what is known and deepens understanding of complex issues. According to Lincoln and Guba in their 1985 book, qualitative research involves the studied use and collection of a variety of empirical materials: case study, personal experience, introspective, life story, interview, observational, historical, interactive, and visual texts that describe routine and problematic moments and meanings in individuals

Abstract:
This paper aims to reflect on the practices, Educational Curating and Mediation of Street Art, from the observation of its relations with cultural and educational institutions in the city of São Paulo. For this, we analyzed Street Art exhibitions that happened at MASP (Museum of Art of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand) and at MuBE (Brazilian Museum of Sculpture), made between 2009 and 2013. Our focus is on the exhibitions: De dentro para fora/De fora para dentro e De Dentro e De Fora/Inside out Outside in, both at MASP; and the 1st and 2nd International Biennial of Graffiti Fine Art, both at MuBE. The samples cited were chosen specifically as they were exhibitions based in cultural institutions, as our goal is to investigate how this art manifestation has been addressed by the Educational Curating, and how the work mediation was directed to the schools and/or groups that have visited these exhibitions. In addition to this analysis, we conducted two case studies, two proposal practices in Street Art. The first is the work of the Eduqativo of Institute Choque Cultural that, since 2011, keeps projects like the Artistic Languages: Street Art at school, and Street Art project connecting education with the public educational institutions in São Paulo. The second proposal deals with a Street Art project, which takes place at EMEF Dep. João Sussumo Hirata, school located at Jardim Ofélia neighborhood, suburb of Sao Paulo, which for the second year carries the project Making Art at Sussumo, under the guidance of one of the Arts teacher, based on the hip hop Culture whose final event is the Graffiti party at Sussumo, named Graffitassu. Concerned with the reading of the Graffiti images also bring a discussion of the process of communication between the sender and the receptor of the images. Based on studies in Education of Freire, Vygotsky, Foucault, in Sociology of Bauman, Hall, Bourdieu, Badiou, in Art education of Barbosa and in Art of Rancière, Baudrillard, Cauquelin, the last goal of this research is to reflect in a social, political and educational way about the practices and approaches surveyed with a view to contributing to discussions regards Street Art through different environments with the overriding aim of Art education.

Thesis (M. Ed. (Education )) - Central University of Technology, Free State, 2014
This study investigates mediation of learning in Grade 10 Business Studies. Mediation of learning is one of the roles that have to be fulfilled by educators in the teaching and learning situation. Learning theories that focus on teaching and learning provide insight about the study under investigation. Aspects such as teaching, learning, constructivism, mediation of learning, teaching strategies, teaching and learning through different learning theories and assessment for learning are dealt with. A qualitative research design is employed in this study. Data is gathered through observations of Grade 10 Business Studies lessons and questionnaires completed by Grade 10 Business Studies educators. Purposive sampling is used to sample the participants for this study. Ten schools in the Lejweleputswa district and ten Business Studies educators from these schools are sampled. Data is analysed qualitatively and emerging trends are reported on and interpreted. Observations in the study indicated that most Grade 10 Business Studies educators do not implement mediation of learning in their lesson presentations. Learners are mostly passive listeners in the classrooms. Most educators indicated that they implement mediation of learning in their lessons, although observations portrayed the opposite. Educators are in need of training to be successful mediators of learning. Conclusions and recommendations are made regarding mediation of learning in Grade 10 Business Studies classrooms.

Abstract:
A recent innovation in language testing involves the use of computer-mediated communicative language tests i.e., assessment of individuals' second language ability from transcripts of their interactions via computer-mediated communication (CMC). Studies have shown that such interactions in the first language involve a hybrid discourse with features of both written and spoken language, which suggests the possibility of making inferences about oral language ability from performance in a CMC environment. The literature to date offers little guidance on this matter. Research on computer-mediated communication has focused on its use in the second language classroom rather than in a testing context while studies of the linguistic and interactional features of second language learners' CMC discourse have mostly been descriptive with little direct comparison of CMC and face-to-face discourse. This study, therefore, examines the validity of making inferences from computer-mediated discourse to oral discourse through a comparison of the performance of 24 third-semester French students on two tests: a computer-mediated communicative French test; and its nearest equivalent format in face-to-face testing, the group oral exam. Using a within-subjects design, counterbalanced for testing condition and discussion topic, the present study focuses on five areas which have important implications for validity: (a) the predictability of ratings of pronunciation on the group oral test; (b) the similarity of scores achieved on the CMC and group oral tests; the presence of similar (c) linguistic and (d) interactional features in the discourse of both tests; and (e) students' attitudes to the two tests. Results show that although scores on the two tests showed no statistically significant difference, students' discourse differed in many respects which would, thus, invalidate any inferences made about oral ability from computer-mediated performance. Moreover, this study raises an important question about the role of computer-mediated communication in promoting second language acquisition since the computer-mediated discourse contained fewer examples of the negotiation of meaning routines that interactionist theories hold to be important to language acquisition.

Campus mediation programs (CMP's) experienced a rapid growth in higher education institutions from 18 programs in 1990 to more than 200 programs in 1998 (Warters, 2000). During that period, CMP's became a widely accepted approach for addressing conflict within US colleges and universities. However, recent data indicate that there are just over 100 programs which points to a decline and raises questions as to the value of campus mediation programs to higher education institutions. A hindrance to addressing the questions raised has been the limited amount of empirical research and published data on evaluation use within campus mediation programs. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to gather information from US campus mediation program directors regarding their use of program evaluation in order to suggest ways to improve their evaluation efforts. Campus mediation program directors were surveyed on their perceptions of evaluation use in their respective programs. This study was conducted over a period of six months using a web-survey and follow-up telephone interviews. The web-based survey used in this study was adapted from an online campus mediation program survey developed by Rick Olshak and modified. The web-survey consisted of four sections: Demographics, Description of Services, Evaluation and Program Profile. The population consisted of 108 campus mediation program directors in US higher education institutions who were solicited for this study and agreed to participate. Of the 108 directors, there were a total of 59 respondents representing a 55% response rate. There were nine respondents who participated in a follow-up telephone interview. Data analysis for the research questions utilized rank order, frequencies, and averages; supplemental analyses utilized an independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA's and Pearson correlations. Results indicated that evaluation received one of the lowest priority ranking as a program goal, however, most of the directors indicated that they would be very interested in learning different ways of improving their evaluation methods and having a standard evaluation process. The most prevalent concerns and recommendations from the telephone follow-up interviews focused on acquiring buy-in of administration and campus affiliates, improving program surveys, addressing budget cuts and decreasing high staff turnovers.

Abstract:
Durante a análise, pesquisadora e professora realizaram planejamentos e avaliaram conjuntamente as ações.

The field of research is in early childhood education in a EMEI in São Paulo. The research subjects are 4-5 years old children and the teacher. The study fits in the educational research modality which discusses practice of best quality, sustained by the praxeological knowledge, having as assumptions, the democratic education that believes in the child as a social actor, who participates in the learning process, supported by pedagogy for the participative child. The research adopted a concept of education based on an experience that requires a curriculum for the participative child sustained by Dewey (1959a, 1959b, 1973, 1976). The pedagogical practice conceives the mediation as the axis of learning based on Vygotsky (1978, 1995, 1999) and the prank in early childhood education as possibilities of learning. The methodology was based on the qualitative paradigm, in the use of a case study using action research, observing the guidelines of Elliott (2000a, 2000b), Kemmis and Smith (2008) and Maximo-Esteves (2008), in which an ethical commitment and a collaborative investigation between the researcher and the teacher is required. The length of time longer than two years (2010 and 2011) allowed changes of pedagogical praxis. As a tool for data collection, the child scale target (Target) was used in the investigation, in the corresponding items to the involvement of children and in their interactions and the scale of commitment of adult was also used (LAEVERS, 1994; PASCAL; BERTRAM 1999). During the investigation, the researcher and the teacher performed planning and jointly assessed the actions. For the triangulation of data was used the voices of the children, the teacher, the researcher and the parents. The results are divided into three areas of discussion, based on the theory of Lev Vygotsky, in which we analyzed the practices of mediation between subjects, signs and instruments. Thus, the mediations were discussed in a partnership between the teacher and researcher in the sense of allowing greater involvement of the child in organizing an environment with diverse materials, through the use of signs and the interaction of more experienced partners. The actions of collaborative effort made by the adults favored the interests of children, enabling a full experience concerning the participation in the educational context.
