Abstract:
This book explains how American suburban school districts gained a competitive edge over their urban counterparts. It focuses on the period between 1950 and 1980, and presents a detailed study of metropolitan Kansas City, a region representative of trends elsewhere. While big-city districts once were widely seen as superior and attracted families seeking the best educational opportunities for their children, suburban school systems grew rapidly in the post-World War II era as middle-class and more affluent families moved to those communities. At the same time, economically dislocated African Americans migrated from the South to center-city neighborhoods, testing the capacity of urban institutions. As demographic trends drove this urban–suburban divide, a suburban ethos of localism contributed to the socioeconomic exclusion that became a hallmark of outlying school systems. As the book demonstrates, struggles to achieve greater educational equity and desegregation in urban centers contributed to so-called white flight and what Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan considered to be a crisis of urban education in 1965. Despite the often valiant efforts made to serve inner city children and bolster urban school districts, this exodus, the book argues, created a new metropolitan educational hierarchy—a mirror image of the urban-centric model that had prevailed before World War II. The stubborn perception that suburban schools are superior, based on test scores and budgets, has persisted into the twenty-first century and instantiates today's metropolitan landscape of social, economic, and educational inequality.

Abstract:
How does the middle class secure advantages in school? Research provides clear evidence that parents’ education and income are the best predictors of children’s educational outcomes. Explanations for that middle-class advantage typically focus on the match between middle-class culture and school culture. From that perspective, teachers reward students whose behaviors meet their expectations. This book argues that the middle-class advantage is also, at least in part, a negotiated advantage. Middle-class students secure advantages not only by complying with teachers’ expectations but also by requesting (and successfully securing) support in excess of what is fair or required. This chapter provides an overview of the book as a whole, describing the research questions, the data and methods used to answer those questions, and the answers to those questions. This chapter also situates those questions and answers in a review of prior research and concludes with a brief summary of the remaining chapters.

Abstract:
This article explores the correlation between poverty and education. Poverty has been a core concept of interest in research on educational inequality. However, the conceptualization of poverty in empirical educational research does not always, or even usually, conform to definitions and measures that are prevalent in the poverty literature. To further complicate matters, the educational literature subscribes to no uniform set of alternative conceptualizations. This article begins with a discussion of three important functions of education in almost every modern society: imparting knowledge, socializing children, and transmitting family advantage or disadvantage. It then considers the impact of poverty on education at the national level and how education is affected by community and neighborhood poverty as well as household poverty. It concludes with an assessment of the impact of education on poverty.

Abstract:
The chapter reviews the evolution of educational institutions and outcomes over the 150 years since Italy's unification and discusses their interaction with national and regional growth patterns. Initial educational conditions across regions contributed to differentiate the early industrial take off in the late nineteenth century. Conversely, formal education does not appear to have played a major role in the post-war economic boom. The slowdown of Italy's economy since the 1990s may in part reflect interactions between the country's traditionally low human capital intensity and its new comparative advantage patterns. It may also be due in part to the deterioration of Italy's educational system's organization since the 1970s.
