A comprehensive, functioning evaluation system is an important component of a residency program. It should focus on the residency program as well as on the residents and should provide feedback to the residents, their teachers, and the program director. Such a system allows residents and their faculty advisors to receive timely, ongoing, formative feedback concerning resident progress. Likewise, it can help the faculty recognize the strengths and weaknesses of the training program by providing data that can lead to the curriculum changes needed to improve resident experiences. In every way that matters, advising is a form of teaching. Using Bloom's (1956) taxonomy of educational outcomes, I explain how to develop learning objectives within advising contexts. The article also suggests commonly available educational materials, such as university catalogs, as content delivery mechanisms for students; in addition, it offers ideas such as reading guides and on-line lectures. Finally, I explain how to assess student learning, that is, how to determine the extent to which students' learning outcomes mirror the objectives established by the advisor. Relative Emphasis: pract

The paper illustrates how fuzzy techniques can be applied to address problems experienced in widespread computing systems for distance learning. Many educational organizations use Web Course Management Systems (WCMS) to run distance courses. In such environments, facilitators often face difficulties in monitoring and understanding problems experienced by distance learners. An approach is proposed here where artificial advisors are built to offer distance-learning facilitators informed advice of what the problems/needs of individuals and groups may be, as well as to suggest appropriate actions

The fundamental aim of secondary education ought to be anthropocentric. However, despite legislative intentions mandating secondary education to foster the intellectual and psychophysical development of students, this goal remains unmet. Contemporary schools, influenced by various factors, uphold principles that diminish their human-centred essence. The pedagogical role of the teacher emerges as a critical factor in this discrepancy. Within an open and distance learning framework, the teacher's role transitions towards that of an advisor, enhancing student autonomy. In such settings, the educa

Presented here is a translation of four poems by the Northumbrian monk Alcuin, advisor to Charlemagne, forming a mini-corpus which depicts the author as a teacher and creator of the educational and moral reform program of the reborn Roman Empire. The commentary points to the reception of Greco-Roman antiquity — especially the topics — and the attempts at remolding the material in the Christian spirit.
