Abstract:
Computer technology has been introduced into the field of language education for more than three decades. However, how individual learners interact with language learning multimedia programmes in different ways is not yet understood. A possible explanation is related to the learners variables. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of cognitive style, one of these variables, on the language learning process. The participants of this study were a group of ESL university students from Malaysia, who interacted with a language instruction CD-ROM. This study focuses on investigating the interaction process from the students perspective. Ridings Cognitive Style Analysis, a computer software that measures individuals cognitive style, was used to assist in identifying and categorizing students cognitive style. Thirty students cognitive style was measured before each student spent an average of three hours interacting with a language instruction CD-ROM. This study adopts the case study approach. The primary method of collecting data involved semi-structured interviews with students that focused on their experiences and preferences while interacting with language instruction CD-ROM. Factors that affected the interaction process were then examined to detect whether they were linked to the differences of students cognitive orientation. The findings of this study reflect the mixed results that previous researchers have found regarding the effect of cognitive style on students language learning experiences. Although responses toward the content, graphics and vocabulary items did partially reflect their cognitive orientation, cognitive style was not the only factor that influenced these students behaviours or preferences as they interacted with the language instruction CD-ROM. The study found factors that were not linked to the students cognitive styles, yet these also influenced the interaction process. These non-cognitive-style factors consisted of students language learning motivation, social presence, and their conception of language learning and cultural influence, which resulted in teacher-centeredness. As a result of these findings, theoretical, research and pedagogical implications are discussed. Recommendations and limitations of the study are also presented.

Abstract:
Educational compact discs or CD-ROM's are appearing more frequently in the classroom. An educational science laboratory safety CD was developed at the University of Lethbridge in 1994. This case study is an evaluation of the U. of L. safety CD to determine how well the disc facilitates independent, student directed learning. The study involved forty four High School students at Matthew Halton Community School in Pincher Creek, Alberta. The students used the CD in Biology and Chemistry classes. The survey included observations, questionnaire, and interviews to solicit student reaction to the disc. Students agreed that the CD was easy to use and that it was well suited for independent learning. They also made suggestions for further improvements.

Engel, Jim, and Jim Menas. "Telemetry Course." International Foundation for Telemetering, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/611494.

Full text
Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 30-November 02, 1995 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada
This paper presents a new multimedia CD ROM course on Telemetry that has is just being developed for DoD by the Defense Test and Evaluation Professional Institute (DTEPI). The paper will discuss the Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) software packages that were used to develop the course. It will discuss the methodology used to develop the course and lessons learned in its development. During the presentation of this paper a computer and VGA projector will be used to show some of the material in the course. This is the second CD ROM course developed by DTEPI, the first one was on Time, Space-Position Information (TSPI). The TSPI course has been completed, passed Beta testing at most of the National Ranges, and has been released. About 800 CD ROM disks have been distributed to the Ranges and other qualified users. The Telemetry course will be similarly completed and distributed. The course is intended to be an introduction to the subject of telemetry for use by engineering professionals just entering the workforce, by professionals cross training into T&E, and by others with a need or desire to understand telemetry. The value of developing an interactive course using audio narration, animations, as well as still pictures and video of actual instrumentation and equipment cannot be overemphasized. This multimedia environment makes the explanation of concepts like an optical encoder easily understandable as the student can "see" a simulation of the encoder in operation. The course is designed to be self paced with students controlling their own progress and choosing the topics they want to cover. The student also has the option to print a hard copy of the page narration or read them on screen. The course facilitates the rapid learning of the jargon of telemetry, all the essential acronyms, the way telemetry systems work, what they look like, and many of the limitations of telemetering systems. The course covers the History of Telemetering, Telemetry Subsystems, Range Applications, Telemetry Schemes, Theory of Operation, Telemetry Processing Systems, Testing Telemetry Systems, and other Miscellaneous Topics. It will afford the student a lot of insight into telemetry without the mathematics and detail required of a telemetry design engineer.

Abstract:

This study is the effect of the hypothesis that recognizes in the hypermedia, according to the interdisciplinary proposal, innovatory potential for the model s rupture of the traditional and meaning education to found conditions to constructing of the renewed educative process. To confirm this hypothesis, we search theoretically into the principal teaching boarding that influence the Brasilian education, we study the National Curricular Parameter, we search the hypermedia and the interdisciplinarity concepts and its historical development, and we deepen the knowledges about the hypermedia s properties, the painting language and its importance in the hypermedia s conception. By means of the descriptive analysis of the CD-ROM Diadorim local history of the child, young persons and adults alphabetization process of the Diadema Municipality , we verify that the materials us the studied hypermedia is one important instrument that allow of the pupil one active reader, one co-author, one participant of the educative process. At last, we show the important relation between the knowledge s production and the public politicians of the search valorization. The Diadorim project is one proof of the binomial university and the public power can give the construction of the materials and high quality projects and to create excellent opportunities to improve the quality of the Education.

Abstract:
Diplomová práce Educational set of microscopic anatomy of intervertebrates for secondary schools. Tomáš Bartáček Pedagogická fakulty UK v Praze 2010 In this thesis, I compiled an educational set illustrating the microscopic anatomy of intervertebrates. This set is intended for use by students and teachers at high schools and gymnasia. It complements the common tools used for education in zoology of invertebrates. It combines a set of microscopic specimens (histological sections, smear and native specimens) and multimedia atlas. For the present work, I chose model invertebrates that have been commonly described in high school and gymnasia text books. For preparation of the histological sections, I used flatworms (Dugesia gonocephala), roundworms (Ascaris suum) and earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris). I prepared the specimens in accordance with standard methods shown in literature with slight modifications in order to make them suitable for the given specimens. I used paraffin as a cutting fluid and I stained the specimens using either Harris hematoxylin and eosin or Masson's trichrome stain. To create the smear specimens, I spread the animal tissues of interest, fixed them in methylene and stained using Giemsa-Romanowski stain. I prepared the native specimens both vital stained and non-stained. I...

Ricci, Christine Marie. "Children's memory and comprehension for a story: Comparison of audio, audio-visual, and interactive CD-ROM media presentation." 1998. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI9823769.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was designed to examine the influence of different media presentations on children's comprehension and memory of a story. Sixty-six first grade children experienced a well-structured story presented either by audio, audio-visual, or interactive CD-ROM media. Within the interactive CD-ROM condition, children either controlled the interactions (participant) or observed another child's interactions with the program (observer). The interactive CD-ROM contained a wide variety of animations and sound effects that were considered mostly irrelevant to the story content. All children received a memory and comprehension interview containing a free recall question, specific factual and inference questions, a picture sequencing task, and media preference questions. Results indicated no difference among the media conditions in terms of children's free recall of the story. However, children's recall of the story categories fit the pattern established by story grammar theory. In terms of the specific memory questions and picture sequencing task, children who just heard the story (audio) performed significantly worse than the children in the other media conditions, even when the questions were based on information that was contained in the narration. All children performed better on the inference than factual questions. Interestingly, there were no differences in terms of memory or comprehension among the audio-visual, participant, and observer interactive CD-ROM media conditions. It appears that watching irrelevant objects and animations did not distract children from comprehending the story. The presence of a well-established story grammar structure may have facilitated children's ability to retain the basic story components despite interruptions. In addition, explorations within the CD-ROM were documented and described for children in the participant interactive media condition. Although there was a surprising amount of variability in children's interactive behavior, it appears that gender may have influenced both the amount and type of interactions with the story program. Results are discussed in terms of the implications for children's multimedia design.

Kartal, Erdogan. Phd thesis, 2004. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/edutice-00000770.

Full text
