Abstract:
In the Australian early childhood sector the role of educational leader emerged as part of a very large process of policy reform that began in 2009. The position of educational leader was established to drive the quality improvement requirements of the reform, but many organizations did not establish these positions until several years after the reforms were introduced. Lack of clear role descriptions and authority make it difficult for educational leaders to fulfil the expectations held of them. This study examines the sense leaders make of the policy reforms and the street-level bureaucracy they perform to translate the policy into action. This sense-making and street-level bureaucracy is taking place in a neoliberal context where, we argue, the demands for professional discretionary decision-making are in conflict with the top-down standardization inherent in neoliberalism. Educational leaders have the potential to challenge neoliberalism through their professional decision-making but, in the Australian context, many are currently focusing on compliance with their street-level bureaucracy.

Hendricks, Clarence Nowellin. "Integrated leadership : a leadership approach for school management teams." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1018610.

Full text
Abstract:
School managers currently face major challenges of finding innovative ways to improve the quality of teaching and learning and ultimately student outcomes. This might be because contemporary leadership models promote either requisite curricular expertise or requisite leadership qualities or requisite norms and values which impact notably on teaching and learning. This study examined to which extent School Management Teams (SMT’s) contribute to the quality of teaching and learning when utilizing an integrated leadership approach in primary schools. The extent to which integrated leadership contributes to the quality of teaching and learning is investigated through an exploratory mixed method approach. Case studies in six different schools were conducted through both qualitative and quantitative research methods to obtain data regarding the thirty-six participants’ integrated leadership qualities. Data was gathered through focused group interviews, observations and a questionnaire. The Annual National Assessment results for two consecutive years (2010 and 2011) of grade three and six learners for literacy and numeracy were collected to determine the relationship between integrated leadership and quality teaching and learning and the extent to which integrated leadership impacted on student outcomes. The findings revealed that SMT’s confused integrated leadership with the utilization of qualities from a range of leadership styles each seeking to fit the purpose of an activity, and then claim they are employing an integrated leadership approach. Integrated leadership on the contrary is one leadership model with different qualities and when utilised as a complete package, in a unified manner, has the potential to have a significant impact on the quality of teaching and learning and ultimately student achievement. The findings also indicated that the majority of SMT members are either not utilising integrated leadership or occasionally utilise some of the integrated leadership qualities. This might be one of the main reasons for unsatisfactory academic performance in schools. Integrated leadership thus, when implemented in its totality at all times, possesses all the qualities to have a significant impact on the quality of teaching and learning nationally and internationally.

Abstract:

The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore crisis management teams’ (CMTs) perceptions of higher education leaders’ competencies in managing crisis situations. It addressed the following research question: What are relationships among CMT members’ perceptions of leadership orientations and perceived competencies of their crisis management leaders? Exploratory data analyses showed the presence of two of Bolman and Deal’s (2013) primary leadership frames: human resource and structural. Analyses also showed relationships among lower reported leadership frame behaviors, crisis preparedness, and crisis-leader ratings. More extensive research on crisis leadership is recommended.

Christian, Marc E. "Athletics Director Leadership| How Forces Affect Leadership and Organizational Change Agendas." Thesis, University of Pennsylvania, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10279393.

Full text
Abstract:

Intercollegiate athletics have received considerable attention by scholars in higher education. Despite this wide treatment by scholars, there is little examination of the athletics director. Most of the published research on athletics directors disproportionately focuses on the responsibilities of the athletics director, the pressures of the leadership position, the characteristics and behaviors of these leaders, and the organizational culture of athletics departments. The purpose of this study was to investigate and gain insight into the environmental forces that disrupted and influenced athletics director leadership. This study explored how the participants understood, acknowledged, and reacted to forces that unavoidably influenced their choices. Particular attention was placed on comprehending how these individuals led change in their organizations while at the same time balanced the intersecting demands on their positions.

Qualitative research methods were used to explore the forces that influenced athletics directors at large, public and private research universities that were part of the NCAA and sponsor Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) or Division I-AAA (no football) athletics. A grounded theory methodological approach was used in the design and execution of this study. Using this method built theories through systematic stages of data analysis and conceptual development. The development of these concepts became the building blocks of theory, which explained the participants’ experiences as athletics directors. These findings offer insight into the forces that influenced athletics directors as they led change in their organizations.

Abstract:

Educational technology can be a powerful tool and the advantages of using it in instruction are abundant. However, it is important that instructors use technology effectively. Recent rapid changes in technology have coincided with rapid growth in online learning. Since the 1990s, learning management systems (LMS) have been adopted in higher education as a means for providing instructors with educational technology tools to manage and facilitate their higher education classes. LMS tools play a significant role in the facilitation of online learning. The changes in educational technology and the growth in online learning have led educators in higher education to examine best practices for integrating technology in online learning. Retention is a major focus of higher education administrators. Thus, student satisfaction in online courses is a concern in order to decrease attrition and improve student persistence in online education. This study examines the relationships between student perception of the usefulness of LMS tools and student online course satisfaction in higher education.

Cobb-Hayes, Jennifer. "An Investigation of the Relationship Between Authentic Leadership and Pastoral Leadership Effectiveness." Thesis, Indiana Wesleyan University, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=13808904.

Full text
Abstract:

This mixed method case study examines the relationship between the authentic leadership of the pastor of Warsaw Community Church and his effectiveness as a leader in achieving the collective goals of the church from the perspective of his leadership team and direct reports. It examines how his level of authenticity affects the followers' desire to be a part of that authentic relationship. By using a quantitative method study the research assessed the following: (a) the authenticity of the pastor through self-assessment and follower feedback; (b) the leadership effectiveness of the pastor through self-assessment and follower feedback. The qualitative interview portion of the study provides insight and focus into how the level of the pastor's authenticity impacts his leadership effectiveness and the level of authentic relationship between the pastor and his followers.

The 12 participants took a combined Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ) and Lewis Pastoral Leadership Inventory (LPLI) online survey. Following the online survey, the interviews with the Founding Pastor's followers, three direct reports, the co-senior pastor and one chosen by the co-senior pastor, added to a richer understanding of the context and relationships.

Rusk, Robert Brian. "A Case Study of Classroom Management Practices and the Influence on Classroom Disruptions." Thesis, Grand Canyon University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10015230.

Full text
Abstract:

This qualitative case study explored how the classroom management practices of sampled teachers in a private school in central Oregon influenced classroom disruptions. Through the study, the researcher was able to provide insight on the differences in specific classroom management processes between teachers who had a high number of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) classroom discipline referrals versus those who had a low number. The phenomenon studied was how the classroom management practices and culture that the teachers developed in their classroom influenced the effectiveness of management of their students. Triangulation of data involved using teacher interviews, classroom observations, and classroom artifacts. Four research questions framed this study. Two models providing the theoretical foundation included Sugai and Horner positive behavioral support (PBS) and Edgar Schein’s model of culture. Two of the themes emerged as significant in advancing knowledge of teachers’ classroom management. First, in the area of teachers’ perception of classroom management, the teachers with high level of classroom referrals and those with low level of classroom referrals perceived that they had effective classroom management practices. Second, teachers with a low number of referrals appeared to take a more holistic approach to classroom management, while teachers with a high number of referrals used a more traditional approach to classroom management. Additional qualitative and quantitative research should further explore the effectiveness of a holistic classroom management model versus a more traditional classroom management model.

Abstract:
The theme of leadership, as much as it has been studied, remains so inexhaustible, the general need to identify those people and styles that lead to good results and that ensure a pleasant working climate. In this context, we considered useful an approach to authentic leadership but applied to trade unions. It may seem like a paradox at first glance, and maybe, for this reason, the topic of union leadership has not been explored much. In the present study, we want to highlight, in general, the perception of teachers about the need for authentic leadership in trade unions in pre-university education in Romania. The need for knowledge of leadership styles, values on which each of them is based, and dangers and the possibility of the emergence of flawed forms, determined this first exploration. The conclusions show that union members appreciate the need for authentic leadership in trade unions in the education system, which can have a positive influence on the educational process.
