Abstract:
Purpose – This article aims to document the process the province of Newfoundland and Labrador used to develop an innovative Physician Management and Leadership Program (PMLP). The PMLP is a collaborative initiative among Memorial University (Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Business), the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Regional Health Authorities. As challenges facing health-care systems become more complex there is a growing need for management and leadership training for physicians. Design/methodology/approach – Memorial University Faculty of Medicine and the Gardiner Centre in the Faculty of Business in partnership with Regional Health Authorities and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador identified the need for a leadership and management education program for physician leaders. A provincial needs assessment of physician leaders was conducted to identify educational needs to fill this identified gap. A Steering Committee was formed to guide the design and implementation and monitor delivery of the 10 module Physician Management and Leadership Program (PMLP). Findings – Designing management and leadership education programs to serve physicians who practice in a large, predominately rural geographic area can be challenging and requires efficient use of available resources and technology. Originality/value – While there are many physician management and leadership programs available in Canada and abroad, the PMLP was designed to meet the specific educational needs of physician leaders in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Abstract:
The article presents the author's view on the new training course "Personnel Management" for masterdegree builders aimed at forming leadership competencies. It is necessary to change the paradigm of training an engineer and include in the process of the formation such subjects that are aimed at forming his or her organizational competencies, leadership, responsibility for making decisions in the field of team management. As a part of the new training approach, it is proposed to build the leadership skills with the help of active teaching methods: business games, project teams, case studies, training. Basing on work experience and curriculum development, it is known that the main difficulty for compilers of curricula is a selection of those subjects that will help to implement these competencies. Therefore, we propose the subject (module) "Personnel management" that has the deep basis of knowledge of many personal issues and is made up of a set of interdisciplinary themes with a set of new activity tools. The condition for the training of civil engineers is to increase the activity component: application of project management, work in small groups (teams), CDIO initiative, interdisciplinary approaches, practice-oriented training.

Abstract:
Synopsis When do you throw it all away? The first senior female in a male-dominated business school decides it all comes down to a question of principle – and maybe a few others. What is the best balance between her responsibilities to students, family, and the next generation of female leaders? Can she both be true to herself and compromise? What factors should influence this decision? This case brings together questions about power and influence, rational decision-making, leadership, and the intra and inter-personal responsibilities of organizational “firsts.” Further, issues related to a university's effort to better compete within the global higher education marketplace, provide a valuable opportunity to explore institutional approaches to promoting diversity, inclusion, and cultural competency. Research methodology This case, which was developed from primary sources, highlights the array of competing objectives and personal and political tensions involved in university administration. Relevant courses and levels This case was designed for graduate students in Masters of Public Administration, Masters of Business Administration, Masters of Education in Organizational Leadership, or similar graduate degrees that include significant management and leadership content. Students working with this case should have already completed foundational courses in topics such as organizational management, public policy, leadership, strategic human resources management, or their equivalents within their respective programs of study. Virtually all of the issues raised by this case address core themes, concepts, theses, and theories associated with an accredited graduate program in educational management, business or public administration.

Abstract:
Saudi Arabia is an important country among the Middle Eastern nations and a pivotal one because of its key position in international petroleum production. Sustainable practices are becoming prominent considerations among public and private sector Saudi Arabian business enterprises. Secondary and primary data pertaining to sustainability and carbon management practices in Saudi Arabia and its business enterprises were analyzed in this study. Saudi Arabian government has been serious in tackling the environmental problems. Primary data revealed private sector managers were better prepared and eager to deal with sustainability and carbon management problems compared to public sector enterprises. Surveyed Saudi managers reported hope that their employers would start rewarding positive sustainability actions and focus on educating managers about carbon management practices. There is a need to reform the educational system to prepare future managers who are ready to implement sustainability policies in their organizations. The findings of this project can assist Saudi Arabian policymakers and leadership of public and private sector universities to restructure the higher education sector to prepare students for the jobs of the future and help Saudi Arabia in pursuing sustainability goals.

Abstract:
The role of school leaders is particularly complex in today’s “era of accountability,” which involves high standards for student achievement alongside frequently changing educational systems. Research in the business field has found leader’s cognitive complexity to be a predictor of leader and organizational effectiveness whereas the notion of school leader’s cognitive complexity remains undeveloped in the educational leadership and management field. Hence, the purpose of this article is to suggest a framework for school leaders’ cognitive complexity, as well as to suggest possible avenues for future conceptualization of, and research into this issue. Two empirical illustrations, based on the suggested framework for school leaders’ cognitive complexity, are described. This novel cognitive complexity framework may help school leaders develop processes, strategies, and structures that will enable them to react effectively in uncertain and dynamic environments.

Abstract:
For the formation and development of tomorrow’s highly effective Manager model it is not already enough of competences from the area of only classic management and/or classic emotional and even business leadership. The optimum combination of universal values and strategic anticipation, social leadership, universal and special management technologies is necessary. Aspects of innovation process management on organization’s holistic development have been considered, main groups of higher school’s development strategies have been marked, and two types of innovative processes in the education system have been characterized in this paper. The author emphasizes that the traditional association of efforts in the training of specialists through a formal merger of several structures is ultimately ineffective. More productive will be the consolidation of efforts (in parallel with formal associations) through contractual relationships, creation of basic chairs at enterprises, strategic alliances, consortia, network organizations, educational and industrial groups, technology parks, business parks, innovative educational and industrial clusters, in other words, through creation of formal virtual structures. These chairs should become such points for growth of future organizational structures for graduates’ training, in other words, they should become mini-academies, which will provide the high level training, and development of science. The paper talks about creation of new forms and organization experiences for training of managerial human resources of new generation through formal virtual structures creation with authorities, high educational institutions, business representatives, secondary school institutions, preschool facilities. This project implementation requires the allocation of several stages. The first one is creation of Institute of management (as faculty) as the core organizational structure in the form of high educational institution unit. A sample structure of such Institute has been proposed, the practical experience of such structures formation has been placed in the clearest light. In the process of their development the Institutions can be transformed into more complex structures (e.g., academies, management universities), combining the traditional organizational structures with creation of strategic formally virtual associations with various educational and industrial structures at the municipal, regional, Federal, and international levels

Abstract:
This study uses an explanatory model of the dimensions of leadership and emotional intelligence according to the methods used in particular teaching environments (universities and other educational institutions). The effect of different kinds of leadership on emotional intelligence dimensions is also established using an explanatory model. A total of 954 teachers participated in this cross-sectional study, teaching in 137 different schools/universities. The instruments used for the data collection were the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5) and the Trait Meta Mood Scale (TMMS-24). Data analysis was performed with the software IBM AMOS 23.0. (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, USA) using multi-group analysis and structural equations. Results showed that the structural equation model had a good fit. Transformational leadership depends mainly on intellectual stimulation in university teachers, whereas intrinsic motivation is more relevant at the lower educational levels. In relation to transactional leadership, contingency reward has a greater regression weight in non-university education, whereas passive leadership is governed more by passive exception in university teachers. There was a positive and direct relationship between levels of emotional intelligence and transformational leadership in non-university teachers, which reveals the need for effective understanding and management of both one’s own and students’ emotions in order to act effectively as a leader. Transactional leadership was negatively related to some emotional intelligence dimensions, given the relevance of obtaining power in this dimension.

E. Witte, Anne. "Co-operation – the missing value of business education." Journal of Management Development 33, no. 4 (April 8, 2014): 357–73. http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/jmd-02-2013-0027.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that co-operation is a vital behavioral skill that should be developed in educational systems, particularly business and management programs, because it is an intangible factor that boosts productive output. Design/methodology/approach – The paper explains why co-operation is an important intangible factor for organizations and the larger economy. It recommends the development of educational designs to remediate the pedagogical lack of focus on the cooperative disposition. Findings – Co-operation is contingent on trust – an indispensable factor to engage in distant relations, accept rule of law across nations, and confer in intermediaries the authority to arbitrate unresolved differences between organizations. In other words, without co-operation, people within organizations commit themselves to parochial concerns, inhibiting efforts to combine resources toward a collective goal. The lack of a cooperative attitude is not destiny – it can be forged through careful educational designs and organizational strategy. Research limitations/implications – There is little empirical data available to measure co-operation in a diverse environment and co-operation is an intangible concept that is difficult to pin to specific organizational habits. The concepts developed here based on broad social science data would do will to be tested in an empirical framework at the micro level. Practical implications – Low co-operation arises in an environment which does not foster trust. Management might inadvertently reward low organizational capacity by not evaluating co-operation and monitoring narcissism. Recruiters need to adapt recruitment strategies that pinpoint individuals capable of managing the specific co-operation needs of situational organizations, especially in diverse situations. A successful managerial education program will target training that optimizes thoughtful and sustainable co-operation. Social implications – Co-operation is a factor of sustainability for development but also for the modern organization. It is both a moral and methodological disposition that fosters collective action positively, while inhibiting in-group interests. Originality/value – Formal management training to instill a thoughtful sense of co-operation would complement the current emphasis on teamwork and leadership. Without the moral and methodological goal of being co-operative for the greater good, organizations waste human resources and fail to reap benefits from collective productions.

Gilbert, Stephen Anthony. "Succession Planning Relating to the Millennial Generation in Private Four-Year Universities." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10278326.

Abstract:

The workplace is in a transition with age demographics (Mann, 2006). The baby boomers, once a large and dominating force in the workplace are now in their initial years of a decade?s move into retirement. And with such a large demographic change, there is a vacuum that is created and then filled. Many industry analysts have deemed this transition as the "Great shift change." In the workplace, vacancies are being created en mass at the managerial and executive levels. Due to the recession of 2008-2012, the baby boomers remained in the marketplace for an extended period of time, some say to rebound with their depleted retirements. As the economy made its way back to normalcy, an intersection of market forces hit. This collision of market forces is the emergence of an economy out of recession and an age demographic beginning an advanced pace of retirements that analysts say will last up to 20 years. Due to a high turnover of the baby boomer generation with the Millennial generation in the market, succession planning is key to maintain productivity and smooth the transition in demographics while providing services to increasing student populations. This dissertation will utilize case studies to analyze this market event and see how private higher education institutions located in Los Angeles, California are handling succession planning in an aggressive employment demographic change.

White, Deborah H. "The Impact of Cocurricular Experience on Leadership Development." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 1998. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/2992.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the impact of cocurricular activities on leadership development. College graduates recognized as community leaders were selected from three communities in Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Through survey and interview techniques, the leaders were asked to reflect on high school and college experiences that led to their development as leaders. The study included a focus on differences in experiences of male and female leaders. Developmental influences such as family, mentors, global experience, and the cocurricular activities engaged in during high school and college were explored. Title IX had no impact on increased opportunities for women in this group of participants, as only two female participants were in college in 1972. Results of the study include the importance of mentors, the strength of high school teachers and cocurricular activities, and the weak influence of college cocurricular activities. High school activities most frequently reported to have influenced leadership development include student government, group music experiences, athletics, and church youth groups. College activities with the most impact include resident hall living and internships. Gender differences in experiences include women's lack of identified community mentors and the importance of a college internship experience for women. Opportunities for men's participation in sports in high school and college as well as their descriptions of community mentors provided different learning experiences for men. Recommendations include a call to higher education to develop a more comprehensive and integrated approach to leadership education. Teaching mentoring skills to future K-12 education professionals as well as college faculty and administrators is recommended to higher education. Student Affairs preparation programs have a role to play in training future professionals how to plan meaningful leadership learning opportunities for students on campus and through distance education. Applying the best practices in experiential education will move college cocurricular activities to a higher level in achieving student learning outcomes. Accreditation bodies are also called to include such criteria in the evaluation of leadership education programs. The community leaders in this study offered leadership development advice to college students including becoming lifelong experiential learners, giving back to community, and preparing broadly for the future.

Correa-Cespedes, Blanca. "Authentic Servant-Leadership Exemplified by Early Childhood Educator David Lawrence Jr.: A Case Study." FIU Digital Commons, 2016. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2453.

Full text
Abstract:
Advocacy and leadership style are essential concepts in education. This qualitative case study was undertaken to demonstrate how Robert K. Greenleaf’s servant-leadership framework could be a useful framework to adopt by educational leaders and child advocates. Servant-leadership identifies the needs of others as a primary goal of leadership. The study contributes to understanding the value of exemplary servant-leadership and advocacy in public education as demonstrated by David Lawrence Jr. The researcher addressed questions regarding how Lawrence embodies servant-leadership traits and explored how a servant-leader has been positively influencing early childhood public educational policy in Florida to benefit all children. There were 16 interviews conducted with individuals from four interest groups in Florida: business leaders, political leaders, local South Florida leaders and educational leaders. In addition, data were gathered by observing and interviewing Lawrence. His speeches and other archival documents were also analyzed. The findings illustrated the ten traits of the servant-leadership framework and identified five additional traits modeled by Lawrence that have contributed to his influence on public educational policy. A paradigm shift from authoritarian leadership to an authentic servant-leadership style that advocates for young children and promotes the importance of early childhood educational policy. The dichotomy examined throughout this research focused on servant-leadership and advocacy that is instrumental to make a difference in education as an educational leader navigates through political agendas. Lawrence leads a “Children’s Movement” in Florida that includes an ongoing bi-partisan individuals movement that has changed early childhood education in Florida. The findings of this investigation validate that servant-leadership framework could influence the transformation of public education.

Alkaabi, MAHFOOD Hussain. "Educational Manager Perceptions Towards Integrated Management Information System Implementation in Yemen." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5299.

Full text
Abstract:
The government of Yemen has been developing government offered services designed to improve the quality of education management. Yemen's managers of education and managers of higher education in the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) have sought to improve quality of education, reduce costs, and provide timely information for decision-making processes by implementing an integrated management information system (IMIS). The problem was the lack of understanding the barriers that hinder successful IMIS implementation by the MOE and MOHE, and the role that lack of collaboration has played in prior unsuccessful attempts. The purpose of this case study was to identify barriers and success factors related to previous attempts to implement an IMIS in Yemen's MOE and MOHE. Diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory and the technology acceptance model (TAM) provided the conceptual framework. A purposeful sampling was used to select participants for semistructured interviews. The interviews were conducted with 3 ministry personnel, 8 managers, and 4 administrators from various governorates who are currently working or have worked in the Yemen MOE or MOHE. Open coding was used to identify themes and patterns. Themes were related to insufficient human and material resources, lack of understanding and acceptance of IMIS, inadequate IMIS education and training, incompetent program managers, and fear of change. These findings may contribute to positive social change by improving the management of education, thereby the overall quality of education in Yemen. Improving management in education could increase the quality of life by contributing to increase of prosperity through a better-educated society, an active citizenry, and a reduction in the level of societal violence.

Abstract:
The next generation of business leaders aspires to integrate financial success with social and environmental responsibility. A fundamental enabler of more enlightened business practice is a change of consciousness toward the compassion, comprehension, and courage needed to conduct business in a way that leads to sustainability and thriving. This chapter presents the system of Consciousness-Based Education (CBE), which incorporates the Transcendental Meditation program. CBE as practiced at Maharishi University of Management is an innovative approach of management education which integrates experiential, intellectual, pedagogical, and environmental features all aimed at developing students toward enlightened consciousness. Empirical evidence on the effects of this educational approach includes cognitive, moral, and emotional development and brain integration. This growth of consciousness gives rise to responsible business leadership to create shared value that integrates the interests of shareholders and stakeholders.

Abstract:
With an increasing number of studies on leadership, the concepts of ethics and servant-hood occupy a greater presence in educational management literature. Today‖s school leader could achieve more recognition, become more credible and legitimate in their schools, with their stand in ethical dilemmas and welcoming the needs of the teachers and learners in the first place. It is believed that servant leadership presents organizations with a chance to attain their goals in ethical leadership practices. When the literature is examined, there seems a tendency to assume servant leadership as an influential factor in ethical outcomes. Thus, this chapter will seek to examine the related terms in ethical and servant leadership, the link between both leadership styles and will explore conceptual and empirical findings related to both leadership styles. The chapter is focused on studies in business and education settings, to give more comprehensive idea to the readers on servant and ethical leadership styles.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the literature on the use of business analytics in higher education. Universities have large datasets available to predict future direction and generate actionable information. An important type of analytics used to improve management processes and to make informed decisions is big data business analytics. State university executive leaders may improve the effectiveness of their decisions by integrating business analytics in the decision-making models. However, there is a need to examine the use of big data business analytics in the decision-making process at the executive leadership level of the selected state universities. Especially in the context of how descriptive, predictive, prescriptive, decisive and basic analytics, and data collection influence the decision-making process at the executive leadership level of the state universities in terms of student retention and graduation rates.

The Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) offer a platform for institutional commitment and leadership engagement toward business ethics and poverty alleviation. The author reviews the principles in light of a need for a renewed management education centered on social responsibility, sustainability and partnership values. The PRME present a possibility for universities to engage with United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and other multi-stakeholder partnerships. The participating institutions share a commitment for a renewed management education where private organizations become positive agents for world benefit. The process of adopting and integrating the PRME into existing programs and curricula is instrumental for educating ethical, sustainable, and socially responsible leaders for the 21st century.

In Sixth International Scientific-Business Conference LIMEN Leadership, Innovation, Management and Economics: Integrated Politics of Research. Abstract:
In the second decade of the 21st century, there is an ongoing discussion on the value of online classes in higher education as the implementation of new technologies in the higher education processes is on the rise. The main questions that are emerging are the level of interactions, quality of knowledge transfer, and development of critical thinking. Several previously conducted research concluded that online models of higher education teaching add more value than traditional methods, and some of the research has shown the shortcomings of online higher education programs. The pandemic of Covid-19 disease caused by a Corona Virus (SARS-CoV-2) has forced most of the higher education institutions in Europe to transfer almost the entire educational process to online platforms. In this paper, the satisfaction of the teachers and the students with the online classes’ effectiveness regarding the teacher-student communication, knowledge transfer, and development of critical thinking in the case of the School of Engineering Management in Belgrade, Serbia, is researched through a short survey and interviews. Statistical analysis has shown that there is a statistically significant difference between students' and teachers' satisfaction. Furthermore, in short interviews, it is shown that the students are more receptive to knowledge transfer, teacher-student communication, and the development of critical thinking through online classes than the professors. As the sample is small, further empirical research on the wider sample is needed in order to get more compelling conclusions.

Abstract:
The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has synthesized a profile to be acquired by all the students based on 13 generic skills. For its assessment, the UPV has also developed a rubric for every skill depending on the level of the course. In this research, we develop an educational innovation for validating the rubrics for 3 of the 13 generic skills specified by the UPV. The chosen skills are: “Ability to think practically and apply knowledge in practical situations”, “Innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship ability” and “Teamwork and leadership ability”. To do this, we develop the same methodology in two groups (Morning/English) of the same course (Marketing Research of the Degree of Business Administration and Management of the Faculty of Business Administration and Management at the UPV) with significantly different student profiles. The assessment results of the skills reveal that there are no significant differences between groups. In conclusion, we could say that the rubrics developed by the UPV are adequate to assess all types of students: Erasmus or non-erasmus, working or having worked in the last 2 years or without work experience, and regardless of their satisfaction with the course.

Abstract:
Computer simulations have implications across disciplines and with learners at all levels. By requiring learners to develop and apply knowledge and skills in interactive changing environments, they encourage deeper levels of learning. Additionally, simulations have been shown to be particularly effective at teaching complicated concepts that depend on the ability to understand interrelationships, strategize, make predictions, analyze and evaluate, and engage in multi-faceted decision making. In order to help students gain a deeper understanding of key business concepts, encourage critical thinking and decision making, foster collaboration and critical discourse, and encourage the application of concepts into real world business practices, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, a minority serving institution, decided in 2004 to introduce a series of competitive web-based simulations at key junctures throughout the curriculum but focused primarily in the course Strategic Management. The simulation selected covers topics such as Strategy & Tactics, Policy, Production, Accounting, Marketing, Finance, Quality control, Human resources, Leadership, and Teamwork and involves students competing in teams against other teams. In order to assess the effectiveness of the simulation, a research protocol was introduced that included the administration of student surveys as well as the collection of performance data. The findings indicate that students overwhelmingly felt that the simulation helped them understand the application of key concepts and learn the decision making process that occurs in professional business practice. The examination of student performance data gathered in this study, with consideration given to the strong levels of student satisfaction, encouraged the authors to postulate based on the high success rates of this student population, which traditionally underperforms in more traditional mode of assessments, that simulations may serve as an equalizer that offers all students, from low to high achievers, an opportunity to succeed and that competitive web-based simulations enhance the overall educational and personal development experiences of minority students enrolled in higher education business programs.

Abstract:
To achieve the vision of E-government organizations across the federal, state, and local government are challenged to improve efficiency and effectiveness, and to afford citizens the same access to information and services they have come to expect from E-business. E-government also has the potential to foster participation in governance. To achieve E-government objectives, leaders must collaborate across boundaries with their counterparts in other departments, organizations, and levels of government. In 2002, the Information Resources Management College, National Defense University began focusing on the development of cross-boundary leadership as the foundation of its new E- government Leadership Certificate.

Abstract:
The theme of leadership, as much as it has been studied, remains so inexhaustible, the general need to identify those people and styles that lead to good results and that ensure a pleasant working climate. In this context, we considered useful an approach to authentic leadership but applied to trade unions. It may seem like a paradox at first glance, and maybe, for this reason, the topic of union leadership has not been explored much. In the present study, we want to highlight, in general, the perception of teachers about the need for authentic leadership in trade unions in pre-university education in Romania. The need for knowledge of leadership styles, values on which each of them is based, and dangers and the possibility of the emergence of flawed forms, determined this first exploration. The conclusions show that union members appreciate the need for authentic leadership in trade unions in the education system, which can have a positive influence on the educational process.

Howes, C. Susan, and Robert W. Taylor. "A Competency-Based Approach to Addressing the Leadership Gap in the Oil and Gas Industry." In SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition. SPE, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/206302-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract As oil and gas industry technical professionals land their first supervisory roles, gaps in their leadership skills often become apparent. Years of technical education and training have prepared them well for roles as individual technical contributors, but stronger business, management, and leadership skills are needed as they move into emerging leadership roles in which they direct others. Competency assessments of first-level supervisors and mid-career experienced hires are conducted to determine mission-critical leadership gaps. This process is done in alignment with competency-focused job descriptions that enumerate key soft skills needed in each leadership role and build on a sound foundation of technical competency. Bringing emerging leaders together as a group enhances their networking opportunities as they advance through the program; including experienced hires helps them become attuned to the company's management style. Learning opportunities can include face-to-face instruction, webinars, e-learning, online resources, exercises, business simulations, and coaching and mentoring. Building future leaders is key to succession planning. Introducing experienced hires to the leadership styles of the company ensures the successful integration of new talent into the team. A competency-based approach to assessing emerging leaders provides the roadmap for creating a deep bench of candidates for future roles in executive management. Experienced instructors and mentors are crucial to ensuring the leadership program delivery is aligned with the corporate mission, vision and values. The delivery of the leadership development program can be self-sustaining if program graduates and external expert facilitators are incorporated into the delivery of the program to future cohorts. Technical professionals progress through supervisory/management positions on their respective career ladders primarily by ‘learning on the job' rather than through formal training. This paper looks at differences between the current state of supervisory development and what professionals actually need in leadership skills. These are new skills needed for transitioning from supervisor/manager to an effective leader. New methods of digital delivery allow greater interaction between participants and instructors. Building an innovative leadership development program enhances the company's brand and attracts and retains top talent.

Abstract:
The state of Slovak education is influenced by several negative factors. In terms of human capital, we have seen the decline of pupils for demographic reasons and lack of interest in the work of teachers. This paper aims to evaluate the efficiency of secondary education on the example of selected secondary schools. The main method of the paper is multicriteria analysis. The subject of research is the efficiency of selected secondary schools. The 10 Business Academies attended by pupils aged 15-19 years and established in the Banská Bystrica and Žilina self-governing regions will be the subject of research. For the analysis we use panel data collected for the school years 2013/2014 - 2017/2018. The contribution of the paper is to create an evaluation of the efficiency of the surveyed schools and to propose solutions for schools that achieved below-average results. The findings may serve as a basis for assessing the efficiency of the Business Academies for comparison with competitors, as well as for the founders of these secondary schools.

Abstract:
Our starting point is the definition and classification of investments, both financial and accounting. Thus, in a financial sense, an investment represents the change of an existing and available amount of money, with the hope of obtaining a higher but probable income in the future. In the accounting sense, an investment is the allocation of an amount available for the purchase of an asset, which will determine the future financial flows of income and expenses. Investments can be classified into two categories: domestic investments - consist of the allocation of capital for the purchase of machines, equipment, constructions, licenses, patents, etc. Their purpose can be to reduce costs, increase production, improve quality, increase market share, etc.; foreign investments - consist of capital investments in shares in other companies. They are also called financial investments and aim to increase the value of the company and diversify sources of income. We also analyze in this article the investment decision. The investment decision is the most important financial decision which a manager has to make. An investment usually involves allocating large sums of money in the long run, with a relatively high degree of risk. We also present and analyze both the stages of establishing an investment decision and the methods of evaluating an investment project. The article also presents management elements regarding the investment recovery term; discounted net value method, investment risk assessment.
