Abstract:
Purpose The aim of this paper is to examine the versatility of the MLIS degree through the lens of special libraries in terms of education, core competencies and benefits. Special libraries show the value of the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree in preparing professionals to work across institutional boundaries in non-library and non-educational organizations and bring their services to the populace in sometimes unexpected places. Design/methodology/approach The authors first conducted a literature review of special librarians and their skillsets, as well as how to properly define “special library”. They then examined different MLIS programs geared toward special libraries and how library schools prepare special librarians to benefit their organizations. Findings The conclusion drawn is that possession of an MLIS degree lends a special librarian more credence in the execution of their duties because they have been educated in how to best benefit their institution. While additional subject expertise is an advantage to the special librarian, the skills learned in MLIS degree programs provide an essential foundation. Originality/value This is a collaborative view that brings together outside research regarding various types of special libraries and the librarians that work in them in an effort to illustrate the value of the MLIS degree in an original way.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to research attempts to educate public librarians in the importance of user privacy issues and assist in reducing privacy violations by providing librarians with an educational program on the subject and measuring its effects. Design/methodology/approach – Research was conducted to examine the influence of education on library user privacy. An education program on the topic was developed and effects of the training were measured with pre- and post-seminar surveys. Findings – Concern for the protection of user privacy increased after the training, and its importance was rated higher as participating librarians became aware of the current likelihood of privacy violations, given the amount of user data libraries collect regularly. The demand for user privacy education also significantly increased after the librarian training course had been completed. Originality/value – This research verified that user privacy awareness can be greatly improved by educating librarians. The awareness change in librarians could greatly contribute to user protection and the basic mission of the library while controversial issues about privacy violation and filter bubbles are seriously discussed.

Abstract:
A review of:
Marshall, Joanne Gard, and Victor R. Neufeld. “A Randomized Controlled Trial of Librarian Educational Participation in Clinical Settings.” Journal of Medical Education 56.5 (1981): 409-16.

Objectives – To determine whether clinical librarian services cause healthcare providers to change their information seeking behaviors. To evaluate librarians’ educational roles for clinicians, patients, and patients’ families.

 Design – Randomized controlled trial.

Setting – An academic, health-sciences-center, teaching hospital in Canada.

Subjects – A total of eight teams, each consisting of at least eight members who represented at least three different types of health professionals. Four teams (rheumatology, obstetrics, neurology, and pediatrics) were randomized into the intervention group to receive clinical librarian services for a six-month period, and four teams (hematology, diabetic day care, pain clinic, and community psychiatry) were randomized into the control group that did not receive clinical librarian services.

Methods – Two half-time clinical librarians attended the intervention groups’ rounds, clinics, and conferences identified as having educational components or where questions would likely arise related to patient care. The two clinical librarians handled 600 perceived or actual information requests, delivered 1,200 documents, and provided over 3,000 references during the twelve-month study period of September 1978 to August 1979. The typical service consisted of the clinical librarian securing one or two articles relevant to the question raised along with pertinent references placed in a “hot topics” ring binder located in the clinical wards. Healthcare providers were alerted to or reminded about the clinical librarian service through a brochure and an exhibit. The brochure also advertised the clinical librarian service to patients or their families. Approximately 24% of all information requests fielded by the clinical librarians originated from patients or their families. The remaining information requests originated from physicians (40%), allied health professionals (21%), and nurses (15%) belonging to these interdisciplinary intervention group teams.

Main Results – Trained impartial interviewers conducted in-depth interviews with members of both the intervention group teams and the control group teams immediately following the first six-month study period and then again three months after the end of the study period. Following the initial six months of the study period, 67% of the members of the intervention group compared to 37% of the members of the study group used the library’s reference services. Three months after the study period had ended, 76% of the members of the intervention group compared to 49% of the members of the study group had used the reference services. The authors reported in a one-sentence page note that these findings were statistically significant beyond the .05 level as measured by chi-square and analysis of variance tests. Three months after the study period had ended, 60% of the members of the intervention group compared to 38% of the members of the study group reported rating highly the use of library resources. In addition, three months after the study period had ended, 36% of the members of the intervention group compared to 27% of the members of the study group reported rating highly the use of reference librarians. Although patients or their families were generally positive in rating the clinical librarians’ services, they proved to be a difficult population upon which to conduct a comprehensive follow-up evaluation study once patients had left the hospital.

Conclusion – The authors conclude that the clinical librarian services to the four intervention groups had changed the group members’ information seeking behavior.

Abstract:
Regional library local history is a comprehensive library activity requiring special professional training. The author reveals the issue of teaching library local history at library higher schools; searched educational publications on local history in the electronic catalogues of libraries and bibliographic indices. It was revealed 48 academic publications on library local history for 1930-2014. The study objective is to trace the evolution of educational publications on the problems of teaching librarian local history in a library higher school. It was presented the analysis of textbooks on the following features: types of educational publications, authors, scientific schools and content. The study revealed expanding diversity of educational publications on library local history, from single programs, lectures to textbooks, educational-methodical complexes and electronic textbooks. At the same time, it was found out a lack of new integrated textbooks, «fragmentation» in teaching and representing certain aspects of local librarian history in educational work, insufficient number of electronic textbooks and absence of interactive electronic educational materials for universities. The fundamentals of teaching local librarian history were started by two scientific schools in St. Petersburg State Institute of Culture and Moscow State Institute of Culture. The formation of the library local history as an educational course is associated with the name of N. V. Zdobnov. The largest contribution to the development of educational-methodological support for library local history was made by A. V. Mamontov and N. N. Shcherba. The substantive aspect of educational-methodological support for library local history can be divided into three stages. The first stage (1930-1970) is related to the study of local history bibliography only. The second period (1980-1990) is characterized by creating a number of editions covering general problems of regional studies of library local history and library activities on local history study. In 1990s preconditions appeared to expand study of various aspects of library local history. IIt was connected with changes in the state policy of regional development, as well as a growing interest in regional/local history information. The third stage (2000-2010s) of the evolution of educational publications is related, on the one hand, to a more expanded study of some specific aspects of library local librarian (bibliographic processing of local history documents, local history fund or management of local history activities, etc.), on the other hand, to a complex representation of regional studies in cooperation of libraries, archives, museums and other institutions dealing with issues of local history in the region.

Abstract:
The article outlines general characteristics of the originality of forming valeological functions in a school library. The paper objective is to study peculiarities of the valeological support of library-information activities in school libraries, as well as the specifics analysis of their library and cultural-educational work aimed at developing the health culture of this activity subjects The author consistently reveals the peculiarities of forming the valeological function of school libraries under conditions of the information society development and dissemination of information-telecommunication technologies in libraries. The article describes cultural-educational activities of libraries directed to develop the health culture not only in readers (schoolchildren, their parents, teachers), but in librarians themselves. The author applies both general scientific methods of research (analysis, synthesis, deduction, induction, generalization, abstraction, comparative, structural-functional methods, method of system analysis, etc.) and special ones (method of analysis of analog objects, information processing, grouping). While researching the author concludes about necessity of the the following: to equip educational libraries technically; to update and strengthen the information base and book stocks of school libraries; to ensure the access of libraries to information resources, in particular the Internet; to form a unified electronic database of school library collections; to develop a form of resource integration with other educational libraries; to create a standing order on the status of libraries in basic schools; to develop a system for improving the skills of school library staff; to organize special training for school librarians to master their knowledge and skills of a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, the school librarian must be trained according to a separate professional specialization. The social life development requires librarians to know not only the valeology bases, but the ability to navigate in information technologies, school curricula and training courses diversitys. Modern problems of information education and forming a high level of valeological culture can be solved only by combining the efforts of general education institutions and school libraries, teachers and librarians. Pedagogical experience shows that knowledge on the health formation and preservation is a necessary and insufficient factor in students' personality development. To influence the behavior, informative methods should be combined with life skills of effective work and rest, physical activity, rational nutrition, an ability to analyze health issues and make appropriate decisions. Thus, forming health culture through library-information activities provides arming school readers and librarians with knowledge on social and individual health and applying certain information technologies in their activities.

USE OF EDUCATIONAL RES OURCES OF SCHOOL LIBRARIES BY TEACHERS OF VARIOUS SUBJECTS — RESULTS OF A SURVEYThe author of the paper discusses cooperation between teachers of various subjects and school librarians. She stresses that from the point of view of developing information literacy, such cooperation translates into development of the pupils’ skills. She points to the recommendations of American librarian societies in this respect Information Power. Guidelines for School Library Media Programs and Information Power. Building partnerships for learning as well as Polish ministerial recommendations annex to Rozporządzenie Ministra Edukacji Narodowej z 27 sierpnia 2012 r. w sprawie podstawy programowej wychowania przedszkolnego oraz kształcenia ogólnego w poszczególnych typach szkół [Regulation of the Minister of National Education of 27 August 2012 on the core curriculum for kindergartens and general education in various types of schools]. At the same time the author’s analysis of the curricula for various subjects in Poland in the second half of the 20th century demonstrates that the problem was marginalised with the exception of Polish language curricula. The aim of the author’s study was to establish whether teachers of selected subjects used the potential of school libraries in line with the ministerial recommendations. In addition, the author was looking for a link between the type of the subject taught at school and use of educational resources of the school library. The author discusses the results of her diagnostic survey N=244. The statistical conclusions are based on the results of chisquared tests. The results show unequivocally that teachers of Polish are statistically more likely, than teachers of other subjects included in the study, to use the educational resources of the school library, to suggest that they should be expanded and to collaborate with the librarian.

Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative study was to indicate changes in library services available to the citizens of Johnson City, Tennessee. The study covered library services available in educational and public settings for patrons from preschool to adult ages. Librarians in this study all worked in either a public library located in Johnson City, TN or worked in the Johnson City School System as a media specialist in either an elementary, middle, or high school. This qualitative study was conducted using interviews of librarians to gain their perceptions of the library and their roles within the libraries of Johnson City. Librarians were interviewed to determine their views in the past, present, and future of the library as an establishment. Documents from the various libraries were also analyzed to determine changes in library services. Various themes emerged from the data analysis. Participants discussed their roles as librarians, the library as an institution, and collection development. Other themes that emerged were discussions of library materials that were now or would become archaic. Participants also made projections as to the future of the library itself and whether or not it would become obsolete. The results of this study suggest that libraries will continue to evolve as technologies and community needs and expectations change. The appearance of the library will evolve to contain more learning spaces for active and group learning. The role of the librarian will evolve as the technology evolves. It will become more focused upon teaching patrons how to use learning tools and access information rather than simply managing and controlling the library’s assets. The librarians’ role has the potential to become one of service leadership in the community and in the school setting. The impact of the library and the librarians’ role will directly affect students, teachers, and community members. Recommendations from this study may assist in transitioning the librarian/media specialist’s role to a great service leadership model that supports individual growth and community development.

Abstract:
The educational role of the librarians is often mentioned in the literature and receives different approaches in discussions about the relationship between Information Science and Education, especially when dealing with the support of the information professional to the teaching - learning processes. Although the subject is presented in the discourses of the area, the boundaries of this function and of the activities and skills it requires are not clear, and the inclusion of this discussion in political-pedagogical proposal to the formation of librarians. This is an exploratory study, based on the conceptual discussion on the mediating role of the librarian in different professional contexts, mainly in research libraries; on studies about professional formation and potential for inclusion in the working world; and on studies on competencies, abilities and skills that this professional should have. The methodology uses bibliometric study of papers presented on the GT - 6 - Informação, Educação e Trabalho do Encontro Nacional de Pesquisa e Pós-Graduação (ENANCIB) in the period 2003-2012, in order to identify main authors and thematic aspects researched, and also a citation study in order to identify potential theoretical influences on Brazilian production in these area. The study used content analysis procedures to extract definitions, exemplifications or discussions about performing activities that could be configured as inherent to the educational role of the librarian, in order to guide proposals for adaptation of curriculum guidelines for a Librarianship bachelor\'s course. The study confirmed that the librarians shall promote educational activities in information contexts, but it do not indicate theoretical and methodological guidelines that could sustain a course based on the development of skills and abilities to form a librarian who is able to perform this role. It indicates that the formation the librarians should recognize educational competencies in order to prepare them to face cognitive challenges, especially in educational contexts is still a challenge for schools of Librarianship and requires a multidisciplinary team of researchers that may promote further integration between the academic research and social contexts of work of the librarians .

Abstract:
<p> Public libraries throughout the United States are increasingly using technological platforms to provide information resources to students across socioeconomic environments. Advances in technology have affected the way in which we learn with the advent of online learning, e-learning and shared learning experiences that have become ever present in schools and libraries. How relevant is the public library in the initiatives that are directly related to the much-needed support of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM)? This study explores the public library as a free, public space for informal learning and the democratic ideals of success as it relates to science education, achievement, and national innovation. The purpose of this study was to determine the challenges that the public library experiences in the implementation of STEAM programs, strategies, and practices employed by the public library in managing the implementation, and how the public library measures success in the process. The questions explored are an (a) examination of best practices in developing strategies for implementation and the challenges that public libraries face as they relate to the implementation and development of STEAM programs, (b) the challenges that public libraries face as they relate to the implementation and development of informal learning programs focused on STEAM, (c) how public libraries measure success within informal learning programs related to STEAM, and (d) what lessons have been learned in the development of informal learning spaces focused on STEAM in the public library.</p><p>

Abstract:
Many institutions focus textbook affordability efforts through open educational resources, but that isn’t the only option available to provide students with affordable course materials. This paper outlines how the University of Central Florida Libraries successfully leveraged its e-book collections to support textbook affordability efforts. A description of the initiative is provided from three perspectives; an associate director, the textbook affordability librarian, and an acquisitions librarian. Included will be the genesis of the program, methodology used, and how data collected from the initiative were used to gain a new position at the university, a Textbook Affordability Librarian. As part of this initiative, various avenues were developed for faculty outreach and collaboration. Instead of a solo effort, there was a strong emphasis on collaboration with internal and external library partners. The final part of the paper is a discussion of considerations for purchasing materials for use as a course text.

Abstract:
Digitális, globális és multikulturális világunkban a könyvtár szerepe, funkciórendszere jelentősen kiszélesedett. A könyvtár- és információtudomány kutatási horizontja is egyre tágul, a felsőfokú könyvtárosképzés mindenkori szakmai trendeknek, felhasználói, munkaadói és munkavállalói igényeknek megfelelő alakítása folyamatos. A tanulmány bemutatja a multifunkciós könyvtár olyan modelljét, amelyben szerepet kap a pénzügyi kultúrát és a vállalkozásfejlesztést célzó edukáció is. Napjainkban ugyanis kiemelt jelentőségűek a kellő tájékozottsággal meghozott pénzügyi döntések. Különösen igaz ez hazánkra, ahol a felmérések és a tapasztalatok szerint a lakosság pénzügyi tudatossága fejlesztésre szorul. Kézenfekvő megoldásként jelentkezik Magyarország legnagyobb kulturális intézményrendszerének, a könyvtári hálózatnak a bevonása is a képzésbe. Sanghajtól Londonon át Chicagóig és Phoenixig már számos nemzetközi jó gyakorlattal lehet bizonyítani, hogy a könyvtári hálózat tagjai – kiemelten a nemzeti- és a közkönyvtárak – sikerrel kapcsolhatók be a társadalom pénzügyi műveltségének pallérozásába, ami a könyvtári hálózat társadalmi beágyazottságát és elismertségét erősíti, illetve az esélyegyenlőség támogatásán túl, az állampolgárok és a gazdasági szektor szereplői számára is innovatív megoldásokat hozhat, úgymint például a start-upok alapításának és működtetésének könyvtári-információs támogatása. A közlemény interdiszciplináris megalapozottsággal tárja fel a külföldi bevált gyakorlatokat a nem formális, könyvtári pénzügyi oktatási akciók hazai adaptálása érdekében, nemzetközi kontextusban tárgyalva és rendszerezve az alapvető elméleti (szakirodalmimódszertani) forrásokat és kijelölve a jövőbeli hazai kutatási-fejlesztési irányokat. ----- Multifunctional library and financial education --- - - The scope of the library’s roles and functions has expanded considerably in our digital, global, and multicultural world. The research horizon of library and information science is also constantly broadening; post-secondary librarian training is being continuously shaped to fit current professional trends and the needs of users, employees and employers. This paper introduces a model for the multifunctional library, in which education on financial literacy and business development is also present, since informed financial decisions are of particular importance nowadays. This is especially true in Hungary, where surveys and experience suggest that the population’s financial awareness needs improvement. An obvious solution is to involve in this education the biggest cultural institutional system of Hungary: the library network. There are many international examples of good practices from Shanghai to London, and from Chicago to Phoenix, which prove that members of the library network, especially national and public libraries, can be successfully involved in improving the financial literacy of society, which also increases the social embeddedness and reputation of the library network, and in addition to promoting equal opportunities, it can provide innovative solutions for citizens and for the operators of the economic sector, for instance library and information support for the founding and management of start-ups. This paper explores foreign good practices with an interdisciplinary approach in order to adapt non-formal financial educational library operations in Hungary. It also discusses and organizes the basic theoretical resources (literature and methodology) available in the international context to provide directions for future domestic research and development.

Abstract:
[The final form of this paper was published in the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology.] The paper reviewed the emerging roles of the 21st century librarians, charged with the responsibility to manage repository services across libraries in present-day information technology environment. Librarians need to be trained and empowered with requisite skills and knowledge needed for successful management of the ICT driven repository initiatives that the 21st century demands. Literature was reviewed on the roles and responsibilities of librarians, training needs and opportunities, career path and recruitment of librarians, and community support necessary for effective and efficient implementation and management of repository initiatives. This entails the ability to comprehend trends and change patterns which are essential for providing research focused and user-friendly models in open repository services that are based on thorough analytical understanding of the challenges of emerging trends. To achieve this requires the training and retraining of librarians to reposition them as information specialists in their career path. The role of the library as an integral part of its social environment is to educate the community about the existence of an open repository by building partnership with community-oriented research centres through seminars, workshops, symposium, training, and awareness programmes. The study recommends that librarians should strategize and collaborate with researchers to make open repository an essential research tool.

Abstract:
One of the greatest challenges that academic and research libraries face today is to prepare the staff working in these organizations for the future. Preparation of library staff requires serious attention to the human resource programmes in libraries and consideration of the development needs and interests of staff at all levels, from at the top the University Librarian to the lowest level the Library Attendant. Human resource planning requires a strategic approach, which focuses on both the immediate issues and considers future needs. Library Managers and the Library Authority need to be adept at identifying the human resources issues in their organizations; able to design and implement development programmes, policies and procedures, to address these issues in a timely and meaningful way; and willing to commit the necessary resources to support the full development of all library staff.

Full text
Abstract:
Academic law libraries face some challenges that are consistent with larger trends in higher education. However, there are unique aspects that shape the way collections are selected, evaluated, managed, and promoted. Most electronic resources designed for legal research do not generate COUNTER compliant usage data. Many subscription resources and services that libraries provide access to are primarily geared towards non-academic customers, such as law firms and corporations. Patrons increasingly need and request research products that rely on data collection, personalization, and non-IP access controls, which complicates law librarians’ professional commitment to things like preserving patron privacy and providing walk-in access. Law library technical services departments are perpetually negotiating these and other challenges to ensure the needs of law faculty and students are met as seamlessly as possible. Some of these methods and strategies might be applicable to other types of libraries navigating unfamiliar issues.

Quail, Stephanie, and Sarah Coysh. Inside Out: A Curriculum for Making Grant Outputs into OER. York University Libraries, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.25071/10315/38016.

Full text
Abstract:
Catalyzed by the passing of the York University Open Access Policy last year, a recognition has been growing at York University, like most other institutions, about the value of Open Educational Resources (OER) and more broadly, open education. This heightened awareness led to the formation of a campus-wide Open Education Working Group in January 2020. The group advocated that faculty members who receive internal funding for teaching innovation projects through York’s Academic Innovation Fund (AIF) should include a Creative Commons license on their grant outputs to facilitate the re-use, and potentially re-mixing, of the content by educators inside and outside of York University. A copy and/or link to their grant output would also be deposited into York’s institutional repository, YorkSpace. To support the 71 funded projects in achieving these lofty goals, an open education and open licensing curriculum was developed by two of the librarian members of the Open Education Working Group. This session describes how the librarians created the training program and participants will leave the session better understanding: How to develop learning modules for adult learners and apply these best practices when teaching faculty online (synchronously &amp; asynchronously); How to access York’s open education training program and learn how they can remix the content for their own institution’s training purposes; The common types of questions and misconceptions that arise when teaching an open education and Creative Commons licensing program for faculty. Originally the program was conceived as an in-person workshop series; however, with the COVID-19 campus closure, it was redesigned into a four module synchronous and asynchronous educational program delivered via Moodle, H5P and Zoom. Modeled after the SUNY OER Community Course and materials from Abbey Elder’s OER Starter Kit, the program gave grant recipients a grounding in open educational resources, searching open course material repositories, copyright/Creative Commons licensing, and content deposit in York’s institutional repository, including OER metadata creation and accessibility considerations. The librarians modeled best practices in the use and creation of Creative Commons licensed resources throughout the program. Qualitative feedback was gathered at the end of each module in both the synchronous and asynchronous offerings of the program and will be shared with participants. The presenters will also discuss lessons learned, next steps, and some of the challenges they encountered. https://youtu.be/n6dT8UNLtJo
