Abstract:
Background: One of the great challenges facing today’s society is the need to combat overweight and obesity in schoolchildren. This study aimed to analyze the impact of a cycle of didactic talks—given to families by a specialist in pediatrics, a specialist in nutrition and dietetics and a specialist in physical exercise—on childrens’ snack choices and nutrition quality. Methods: A longitudinal, quasi-experimental and quantitative investigation was designed, working with a total sample of 50 students divided into control and experimental groups. The nutritional quality of daily snacks was recorded during the month before and the month after the cycle of talks given by health experts. Results: An increase in the nutritional quality of the snacks was observed in the days after the talk—but, after a week, values returned to normal. Conclusions: The giving of educational talks to promote healthy habits may have a positive impact on the nutritional quality of school snacks in the days immediately following the talks. However, some forgetfulness was detected over time, which reduced the nutritional quality of the snacks once more. For future work, it is recommended that researchers measure the impact produced by giving regular talks.

Abstract:
This article discusses the chalk talk’s potential as an active learning method. Although chalk talks are a form of interactive lecture, they have received little attention in the medical education literature compared with other active learning methods such as team-based learning and simulation. One of the authors (C. K. L. Phoon) has used chalk talks to teach congenital heart defects to first- and third-year NYU medical students for many years. His chalk talks have consistently earned among the highest teaching scores, and students have noted their strengths of being more interesting, clear, and tangible than didactic lectures. Using the teacher and student perspectives, we examine the chalk talk’s strengths and weaknesses compared with common passive and active learning methods. Chalk talks create a real-time, shared space that facilitates the active learning goals of helping students build, test, and revise mental models (conceptual frameworks). The limited amount of information that can be presented and the ability to solicit and arrange students’ ideas on the board lead to the cocreation of valuable conceptual frameworks. Chalk talks require less restructuring of teaching sessions than other active learning methods and are best suited to topics that hinge on understanding of concepts. We advocate for the chalk talk to be reexamined as a promising educational tool given its strengths and the successes that other active learning methods have shown. Furthermore, we provide guidance to help educators deliver chalk talks and discuss future studies that would advance understanding of this powerful teaching tool.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the educational sector, pushing it towards teaching–learning methodologies where the online aspect takes on special importance. In this sense, social media are tools that facilitate the creation of meaningful and sustainable learning environments. This study shares an educational experience where TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Talks are introduced as a pedagogical resource through YouTube and LinkedIn in a sport management course. A total of five TED Talks are viewed and discussed by the students in order to develop their professional profile, assisted by a set of initial questions posed by faculty. To assess the impact of the experience, a new scale is created and then validated. The analyses performed reflected the unidimensional nature of this scale, explaining the 64.36% of the variance, and presenting good psychometric properties (α = 0.95). Furthermore, the results obtained reflect the educational potential of TED Talks in the context of sport management, with increases in the averages of all the items from the scale, with significant (p < 0.05) increases in six of them. Both the new validated instrument and the shared pedagogical proposal can be valuable to guide and evaluate future educational experiences which introduce TED Talks as a pedagogical resource in sport management education.

A temporary separation from a biological parent which a child experiences is always, even though it might be for child’s sake, a stressful situation. Taking into account some other problems that might occur, it all might lead to aggressive and autoaggressive behaviours. The researches done for the purpose of this publication were conducted in three educational care centres located within bialski district. Twenty-five charges and ten educators participated in the researches. The studies enabled the three following: gathering information concerning autoaggressive behaviours, learning ways how educators cope with these behaviours, learning educators’ opinions on the factors that affect these behaviours. Furthermore, studies gave a chance to compare and contrast subjective feelings and impressions of both charges and educators. Additionally, within a case study, gathered information was complemented with the individual talks with selected educators in the educational care centres.

Abstract:
In modern society as a result of the processes of globalization of both the media space and the educational environment, the need for learning the English language is actively promoted. The economy of the new information, communication and technological level makes special de-mands to the modern person. They must be a versatile personality who knows how to find neces-sary information, criticallyanalyze it, navigate well in the media space and know a foreign lan-guage. This article discusses the possibility of creating such a model for conducting English languageclasses which would contribute to the formation of media educational competencies in students of various fields of training that meet the requirements of the modern digital economy. The authors of the article suggest that this problem can be solved by using media education technologies during English classes. The authors analyze in detail the use of the original content of the TED Talks portal, which for 5 years (since 2016) has been usedat English language classes with students of non-linguistic specialties at Bunin Yelets State University. The authors are confident that this ap-proach allows students to more actively immerse themselves in the language environment, get better acquainted with cultural realities of the country of the target language and listen to mod-ern live English speech. The article describes the development of an integrative lesson for students of the depart-ment of journalism, where the media content of the TED Talks portal is used. It is concluded that modern education requires closer integration of a foreign language and media. This can be partly realized by the systematic use of the modern content of the TED Talks portal, which con-tributes not only to the development of language skills, but also teaches to critically analyze me-dia materials of various genres and create own communicative media product.

Abstract:
AbstractInternational Polar Week is an educational activity that has been carried out since the International Polar Year 2007–2008 (known then as International Polar Days). This event, which brings together educators and polar scientists to promote polar science, is generally organised by the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists and Polar Educators International. Here we provide an overview of how International Polar Week started, and describe its implementation in Portugal, a “non-polar” country. We quantify the activities carried out during International Polar Weeks in Portugal between 2012 and 2017, which involved >96,000 students, >200 schools, >1900 educators and 100 polar scientists, with talks and Skype calls by polar scientists being the most frequent activities. Portugal’s International Polar Weeks have involved students, educators and polar scientists from 18 other countries, in particular from the United Kingdom and Brazil. We conclude by providing recommendations to other countries wanting to implement International Polar Weeks.

Abstract:
Connell talks about ‘praxis traps’ as being ‘where people do things for good reasons and skilfully, in situations that turn out to make their original purpose impossible to achieve’. This idea of praxis traps reminds us of the elusive nature of human action. However, according to the ideology of managerialism, educational practice is a technical process the outcome of which can be foreknown and guaranteed. In this paper, it is argued that current discourses, such as the New South Wales Scott report, which represent educational practice as technical behaviour, the outcomes of which can be guaranteed, must be challenged. Critique of the discourse alone, however, will not be enough to quell the demands for outcome guarantees. What is needed is the development of a new discourse; one which takes account of uncertainty and unpredictability in educational practice. The paper points to some of the key terms in such a discourse.

The availability of massive datasets in genetics, neuroimaging, mobile health, and other subfields of biology and medicine promises new insights but also poses significant challenges. To realize the potential of big data in biomedicine, the National Institutes of Health launched the Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) initiative, funding several centers of excellence in biomedical data analysis and a Training Coordinating Center (TCC) tasked with facilitating online and inperson training of biomedical researchers in data science. A major initiative of the BD2K TCC is to automatically identify, describe, and organize data science training resources available on the Web and provide personalized training paths for users. In this paper, we describe the construction of ERuDIte, the Educational Resource Discovery Index for Data Science, and its release as linked data. ERuDIte contains over 11,000 training resources including courses, video tutorials, conference talks, and other materials. The metadata for these resources is described uniformly using Schema.org. We use machine learning techniques to tag each resource with concepts from the Data Science Education Ontology, which we developed to further describe resource content. Finally, we map references to people and organizations in learning resources to entities in DBpedia, DBLP, and ORCID, embedding our collection in the web of linked data. We hope that ERuDIte will provide a framework to foster open linked educational resources on the Web.

Abstract:
“Defining the relationship” (DTR) conversations are a topic of interest among lay people, yet have been the focus of little empirical research, leaving a gap in the psychological literature on romantic relationship development. This article presents descriptive data from two studies about the characteristics and correlates of DTR talks in adolescents’ and emerging adults’ romantic relationships. In Study 1, DTR talks were found to occur in over half of the young adult participants’ ( N = 341) most recent relationships, often involved discussion about aspects of commitment and sexual decisions, and occurred more often in relationships that were more serious, involved sex, delayed sex, and involved infidelity. Study 2 extended these findings to an online sample of 15- to 17-year-old adolescents ( N = 248) and found similar results. Further, Study 2 showed that DTR talks were associated with more frequent condom and birth control use. Qualitative data from Study 2 indicated that planning for the future and resolving ambiguity were common motivations for DTR talks, though many teens also reported more spontaneous motivations; further, DTR talks often, but not always, resulted in positive changes in the relationship, including increased clarity, intimacy, and commitment. These findings suggest that DTR talks are an important topic for future research and may have implications for young people’s relationship quality and sexual health.

Abstract:
This article tries to understand, by using some poststructural tools, practices with children that were performed by a Left action group in Sweden in the 1960s and 1970s. Modernist resistance discourses of enlightenment and liberation from obedience, silence and innocence can be seen as being produced, together with postmodern acts of unfolding and deconstructing a unified and essentialist child subject. It finds those non-essential child subjects created in the unpredictable dramaturgy of happenings and actions, and in the decentred spread of talks, tasks and modes of addressing. It makes the point that by analysing how new discourses of childhood were lived out, acted on and performed rather than found in ideological debates, it is possible to add new understandings of changes in child discourses in the 1970s. The article stresses the open-endedness of those practices, and their relation to the creation of new rooms and spaces. It suggests something of a paradox: that the moving and changing of child subjectivities was produced within practices where collectivity was the priority.

Abstract:
Background Education opportunities for night shift nurses are limited compared with those for their day-shift counterparts. However, patients remain critically ill regardless of shift and require intensive nursing care at all hours. Overnight, this care is often provided with fewer resources. These challenges can lead to disengagement and high turnover on the night shift. Objectives To see whether initiation of an informal education series called “Coffee Talk” could improve accessibility to learning for night shift nurses and elevate perception of support from administrators and overall job satisfaction. Methods The lecture series was created to facilitate education for night shift nurses. The program features various speakers within the interdisciplinary team discussing topics chosen by the nursing staff. The talks are presented in an informal setting during overnight hours. An electronic survey tool was used to determine nurses’ opinions regarding Coffee Talk, using a retrospective pretest and posttest format. Questions centered on the type of educational offerings, relevance to practice, perceived leadership support, convenience of attendance, and overall job satisfaction. Results More than half of the nurses (59%) responded. All scores improved from before to after the intervention. The largest increases occurred in convenience of educational offerings and nurses’ perception of leaders removing barriers to learning. Overall job satisfaction increased from 83% to 93%. Conclusions The introduction of an informal educational series improved nurses’ access to education and nurses’ feelings of support from administrators and overall job satisfaction.

Abstract:
This article examines how working children understand the morality of child labor. Drawing on interviews with children in Bolivia and Ecuador, I find that children call child labor moral when it helps them manage their social ties. Working children do not think of themselves as individuals needing care (per international organizations like the International Labor Organization) or as a cultural group needing recognition (per the “working children’s movements”). Rather, children describe themselves as morally upright members of intimate networks. I conclude by introducing the concept of relational dignity.

Abstract:
Patients suffering from end-stage diseases wait in expectation of life-saving organs that could improve their quality of life. However, there is widening gap between organ supply an demand. The intention of this study is to explore and evaluate marketing strategies in organ donation and transplantation. In an attempt to achieve the purpose of this study, a qualitative approach was employed. Phenomenology was used as the study’s research design. The study used social marketing and the theory of social constructivism as the theoretical frameworks and data was collected through in-depths interviews. Qualitative data was analysed through thematic content analysis. Purposive sampling was used to select 30 organ donation coordinators. The study established that public education is the main vehicle through which organ donation and transplantation are promoted. Educational talks, distribution of information, media, social media, expos, awareness events, and corporate and educational talks are amongst the strategies used to promote organ donation. The study recommends that the Department of Education include the issue organ donation in school curricula, and that religious organisations, regular worksite campaigns, regular television advertisements should be used as vehicles through which to promote organ donation and transplantation. Furthermore, it is recommended that additional public awareness campaigns be held in black communities. Abstract:
The material for the article was created as part of the project "Education, levelling developmental and educational deficits of charges of family-run children’s houses and care and educational institutions (based on the example of Biała Podlaska poviat)" implemented by the Department of Pedagogy of Higher State School in Biała Podlaska. Two methods: diagnostic survey and study of individual cases were used in the research, using proprietary questionnaires for charges, interview questionnaires with educators of care and educational centres and family facilities, an observation sheet and talks with coordinators and directors of the examined institutions. The research was carried out in Biała Podlaska poviat in three care and educational centres and three family-run children's homes. The subject of the article was to implement the educational needs of foster care children, including the issue of levelling educational gaps. The aim of the study was to determine whether educational deficiencies are noticeable there, what is the compensation of these deficiencies in family and institutional settings, if any of these forms is more favourable, what factors affect the proper satisfaction of educational needs? The analysis of the results made it possible to conclude that educational needs are realized in both care and educational centres and in family-run children’s homes, the beneficiaries of both forms exhibit numerous educational deficiencies conditioned by previous educational negligence. Compensation of educational deficiencies is more beneficial in family care. The basic forms of compensating for gaps include: tutoring, compensatory classes, individual caregiver work with a child, colleague self-help, voluntary activities.

The operations of the Łódź Sports Club in the interwar period are an important part of the history of sport in the city of Łódź, as well as Poland. The Club’s prestige and successes should be chiefly attributed to the athletes’ and the coaches’ commitment, coupled with the activists’ organisational skills. A historical analysis of the Club’s operations indicates that, in addition to training athletes in various disciplines, the establishment was also involved in a wide range of impressive cultural and educational activities. These centred on organising reading rooms, talks, lectures, social meetings and trips as well as promoting patriotic values and the idea of fair play. Hence, the Club’s educational work was channelled into axiological models of sports competition on the one hand, and into propagating education and culture on the other.
