This case study investigates F. M. Alexander’s newly coined phrase “the true primary movement in each and every act,” as well as the interpretations of this neologism by Alexander Technique teachers and a wellknown Alexander follower who wrote the first biography of Alexander. The case study further discusses the fact that Alexander was of the opinion that his method(s) constitute applied “race culture,” that is, applied eugenics

Abstract:
Abstract Gerontology academic programs continue to face challenges across the university setting, from low student enrollment to reduced funding and budget cuts. However, some gerontology departments are making significant changes to ensure the survival of their programs. This symposium highlights efforts to secure gerontology’s presence in higher education, including new enrollment strategies, curriculum and program changes, and interdisciplinary collaborations. First, Nasreen Sadeq and colleagues will share a case study from the University of South Florida School of Aging Studies on their efforts to increase undergraduate enrollment by developing a new Health Care Administration program. Second, Edward Miller and colleagues will describe hiring and marketing strategies that will promote growth and visibility of the Gerontology department at the University of Massachusetts Boston, such as renaming the Aging Studies major and implementing gerontology courses into the general education curriculum. Third, John Schumacher and colleagues at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Baltimore will share new developments in their department, including a new online Gerontology master’s program and new international research programs, and address current challenges faced by the doctoral program. Fourth, Tina Newsham and Elizabeth Fugate-Whitlock from the University of North Carolina Wilmington will describe interdisciplinary campus and community partnerships that situate the gerontology program in the university’s infrastructure, facilitate recruitment, and create meaningful opportunities for experiential learning. Finally, Robert Maiden and Danielle Gagne from Alfred University will discuss strategies for increasing enrollment, including emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of their program and the addition of an aging concentration.

Kazecki, Jakub. "From Polski Crash to Meine polnische Jungfrau: Orientalizing Poland in the German Cinema of the 1990s." Colloquia Germanica 57, no. 4 (2024). https://doi.org/10.24053/cg-2024-0020.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines how German anxieties about reunification and shifting borders are represented through Orientalist portrayals of Polish women in two post-reunification films, Polish Crash, dir. Kaspar Heidelbach (1993), and My Polish Maiden, dir. Douglas Wolfsperger (2001). Building upon Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism and the idea that the concept of East-Central Europe has been invented as a counterimage of the “West” (Larry Wolff), the analysis reveals how depictions of Polish women as passive, vulnerable, and in need of German male assistance serve to reassert German masculinity in the face of perceived social and economic threats from the “East.” The article argues that these films perpetuate long-standing colonial paradigms within German discourse on Poland that cast Poland as an uncivilized other, and Polish women as feminized objects of control, reaffirming German cultural superiority. By analyzing specific narrative and visual strategies in both films, the text highlights the persistence of Orientalist representations of Poland in German post-unification cinema and their role in constructing national and gendered identities in the context of Germany’s changing geopolitical landscape.

Swenarton, Mark. "Reforming the Welfare State: Camden 1965-73." FOOTPRINT, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.59490/footprint.2.739.

Full text
Abstract:
The housing projects built by the London Borough of Camden in the years 1965-73 belong arguably to the most substantial investigations into the architecture of social housing undertaken in the past half-century. Under borough architect Sydney Cook, Camden aimed to establish a new kind of housing architecture based, not on the Corbusian tabula rasa, but on a radical reinterpretation of traditional English urbanism. The outcome was a series of projects, including Fleet Road, Alexandra Road, Highgate New Town, Branch Hill and Maiden Lane, designed by members of Cook’s team, including Neave Brown, Peter Tábori and Gordon Benson and Alan Forsyth, as well as projects designed by up-and-coming private architects like Colquhoun & Miller, Edward Cullinan and Farrell Grimshaw. While it began in what Hobsbawm called the ‘golden age’ of postwar capitalism, the Cook years (1965-73) saw the onset of the crisis of the 1970s and with it the rise of the New Right and the Hard Left, both of which viewed the Camden housing projects as a legitimate target for attack. Based on archival research and interviews, the paper explores the ways in which the Cook projects both mediated and articulated the emergence of these fissures within the British welfare state.

Johnson, Alexander James Cook. "Charting the imperial will : colonial administration & the General Survey of British North America, 1764-1775." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3458.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores how colonial administrators on each side of the Atlantic used the British Survey of North America to serve their governments’ as well as their personal objectives. Specifically, it connects the execution and oversight of the General Survey in the northern and southern theatres, along with the intelligence it provided, with the actions of key decision-makers and influencers, including the Presidents of the Board of Trade (latterly, the Secretaries of the American Department) and key provincial governors. Having abandoned their posture of ‘Salutary Neglect’ towards colonial affairs in favour of one that proactively and more centrally sought ways to develop and exploit their North American assets following the Severn Years’ War, the British needed better geographic information to guide their decision making. Thus, the General Survey of British North America, under the umbrella of the Board of Trade, was conceived. Officially sponsored from 1764-1775, the programme aimed to survey and analyse the attributes and economic potential of Britain’s newly acquired regions in North America, leading to an accurate general map of their North American empire when joined to other regional mapping programmes. The onset of the American Revolution brought an inevitable end to the General Survey before a connected map could be completed. Under the excellent leadership of Samuel Holland, the surveyor general of the Northern District, however, the British administration received surveys and reports that were of great relevance to high-level administration. In the Southern District, Holland’s counterpart, the mercurial William Gerard De Brahm, while producing reports of high quality, was less able to juggle the often conflicting priorities of provincial and London-based stakeholders. Consequently, results were less successful. De Brahm was recalled in 1771, leaving others to complete the work.

Pohlman, Mike. "Broadcasting the Faith: Protestant Religious Radio and Theology in America, 1920-1950." Diss., 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/3737.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation argues that in the heyday of radio, religious-radio preachers sought to use their programs to counter the secularization of American culture. Ultimately, however, their programs contributed to secularization by accelerating changes already evident in both the conservative and liberal streams of American Christianity. To reach a vast American audience, radio preachers transformed their sectarian messages into a religion more suitable to the masses, thereby altering the very religion it aimed to preserve. This was one of the unintended consequences of American religious radio. Chapter 2 argues that Harry Emerson Fosdick's ministry contributed to a movement away from Protestant orthodoxy. Radio played an important role in Fosdick's successful effort to blaze a new theological trail for the modern era. Chapter 3 shows that Aimee Semple McPherson's experiential religion had an ecumenical appeal that reached areas across the world. As one of the most celebrated Christian figures of the early twentieth century, McPherson's ministry helped make the American church more accepting of important aspects of secularization. Chapter 4 argues that Walter Maier's ministry encouraged millions of people to believe in a simple orthodoxy. The message he broadcast eschewed Lutheran particulars for the bold proclamation of the basic convictions shared by Christian fundamentalists generally. Chapter 5 argues that Charles Fuller's ministry contributed to the transformation of American religion by defining it primarily in terms of evangelism. His success uncovered a particular mood in America: one tired of the militant fundamentalism of the early decades of the century but not ready to abandon the fundamentals of the faith for theological liberalism. Chapter 6 considers religious radio against the backdrop of the emergence of television as the dominant communication medium in America and draws out implications for religion in the modern age of the Internet. To make religion accessible to large and diverse audiences, radio preachers accommodated their messages in ways suited to the medium of radio. Although religious-radio preachers set forth to advance the influence of religion in American society, their choice to limit theological substance ironically promoted the secularization of the American church.

Abstract:
The point of greatest interest is the place where land and water meet.Ralph Waldo Emerson11Kenneth White, On the Atlantic Edge: A Geopoetics Project (Dingwall: Sandstone Press, 2006), 25.As Coastal Works so amply illustrates, we have never been so conscious of shores as we are today. Artists and writers were the first to colonize coasts in the nineteenth century, drawing in their wake the urban elites of Europe and America, followed by the middle and, ultimately, the working classes. Edges are where you will find artists, and, because islands are all edges, they fetch up there in great numbers. On Monhegan Island, off the coast of Maine, America’s most famous artist colony, painters jostle to set up their easels on the headlands made famous by three generations of Wyeths, Rockwell Kent, George Bellows, Edward Hopper, and so many others....

Abstract:
Challenges to biblical linguistics made it increasingly difficult to map human diversity. Consequently, early eighteenth-century language philosophers turned to the specificity of place to integrate language and national genealogy. Edward Lhwyd designed a comprehensive study of British languages. I contrast Lhwyd and his philosophical coterie with Joseph-Francois Lafitau’s and Cotton Mather’s attempts to explain to a European audience how the peopling and languages of North America accord with Genesis. Unmoored from the need to fit indigenous words back into a Christian cosmology and somewhat detached from the broader Atlantic network of knowledge exchange, missionary and indigenous philosophers arrived at new insights into North American linguistics. Among the Wampanoag in Plymouth and Martha’s Vineyard, the Abenaki in Maine, and the Miami-Illinois, Experience Mayhew, Josiah Cotton, Sebastian Rale, Jacques Gravier, and Antoine-Robert Le Boullenger compiled massive dictionaries that in some cases remain the most lasting evidence we have of these languages.

Brennan, Amanda. The Craft of Screen Acting. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350139671.

Full text
Abstract:
Have you been working as an actor, but want to refine your craft and take your performance to the next level? Or do you want to transition from stage to screen acting, and secure a role on Netflix? In this essential book for young working actors, Amanda Brennan offers a specifically psychophysical approach to acting, which provides an understanding of the body as the springboard for creative exploration. Starting with understanding your own instrument, you will learn how to prepare and tune the body for creative work. This is followed by strategies for the refinement of craft, including exercises on voice, movement, character development and rehearsal processes for screen. Experienced young actors, casting directors and agents such as Asa Butterfield (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Hugo, Sex Education), Hannah Rae (City of Tiny Lights), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Daniel Edwards and Christina Shepherd offer their comments and share invaluable advice in interviews throughout the book. With this guide, you will develop a receptive and expressive instrument and be able to build a multi-dimensional character, throughout your career.

This chapter deals with the War of 1898, the US-Philippine War, and other small-scale conflicts at the turn of the twentieth century. It focuses on Edward Stratemeyer’s so-called literary syndicate and the series fiction it produced. Perhaps the most prolific author in American history, Stratemeyer began his career by educating American youths about their country’s newfound commitments abroad. Yet the fan mail adolescents sent to Stratemeyer reveals a more complicated picture, one in which young people expressed their own thoughts on the subject.

This chapter explores the author's quest to see the Nelson's Sparrow around Mount Desert Island and the Golden Road, Maine. The Nelson's Sparrow and the Saltmarsh Sparrow together made up a species known as the Sharp-tailed Sparrow. In 1995, the American Ornithological Union split the species, making two species from one. In the splitting of the Nelson's and the Saltmarsh, one bird ends up named for a particular habitat, and the other for a nineteenth-century naturalist, Edward William Nelson. He collected specimens of these sparrows in 1875 in the Calumet marshes near Chicago when he was only eighteen years old. Later, Nelson worked for the biological survey in the Alaska Territory.

Abstract:
Abstract Perry Miller’s unhappiness over the misinterpretation of his “From Edwards to Emerson” essay (as though he had argued “in some mystical pretension ... for a direct line of intellectual descent”) should warn one against the particular grammatical construction of the subtitle. Miller at least had the advantage of a good deal more “from-ness,” one century to another, in moving between Edwards and Emerson than between Edwards (b. 1703) and Franklin (b. 1706). Yet Franklin’s longevity does allow for some chronological movement, though of course the interest here is more than temporal tracing or pigeonholing, more-to quote Miller once more-than treating the history of ideas as some sort of “mail-order catalogue.” So let it be said that I do not argue for a direct line of intellectual descent but will attempt, rather, to enter the differing intellectual worlds of our two figures. However distinct these separate worlds were, it will also be argued that the orbits of those worlds moved in a common cosmos, sometimes in a parallel or overlapping rotation. And both men hoped to prevent wild eccentricity of orbital motion.

Abstract:
E-mail has become one of the most important communication media for business and private purposes. Large amounts of past e-mail records reside on corporate servers and desktop clients. There is a huge potential for mining this data. E-mail filing and spam filtering are well-established e-mail mining tasks. E-mail filing addresses the assignment of incoming e-mails to predefined categories to support selective reading and organize large e-mail collections. First research on e-mail filing was conducted by Green and Edwards (1996) and Cohen (1996). Pantel and Lin (1998) and Sahami, Dumais, Heckerman, and Horvitz (1998) first published work on spam filtering. Here, the goal is to filter unsolicited messages. Recent research on e-mail mining addresses automatic e-mail answering (Bickel & Scheffer, 2004) and mining social networks from e-mail logs (Tyler, Wilkinson, & Huberman, 2004).

This chapter explores the early history of the steamship cartel, following the rivalry between transatlantic shipping companies, the British and North American Royal Steam Packet Company, and the New York and Liverpool United States Mail Steamship Company, known as the Cunard Line and Collins Line, respectively. Their competitive business practices and the first international steamship cartel were kept out of the public eye for a hundred years; author Edward W. Sloan examines surrounding source material, including the correspondence of Liverpool based banker and merchant, William Brown, to determine what knowledge of nineteenth-century shipping be gleaned from the cartel operation, information that remained obscured during its time.

Abstract At Harvard’s 250th anniversary celebration in 1884, the aging Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., of “One-Hoss Shay” fame and one of the great debunkers of the Puritan heritage, read a poem exalting how “Harvard’s beacon shed its unspent rays” to benefit other American colleges. Among Harvard’s beneficiaries was the College of New Jersey: “O’er Princeton’s sands the far reflections steal, Where mighty Edwards stamped his iron heel. ... “According to the Harvard story, Princeton’s president James McCosh left the festivities early in protest.1 McCosh indeed admired Edwards and saw his own work as continuing that of his famous forerunner.2 In any case Princetonians hardly welcomed being told that they needed Harvard’s “unspent rays.”Princeton is especially significant to the present inquiry because if a more traditionalist Protestant intellectual alternative to the emerging definitions of American academia was to survive at any major school, Princeton was the foremost candidate. All the other leaders in shaping university education moved in essentially the same social orbit. The major university founders, such as White, Gilman, Angell, and Eliot, kept in close touch and sometimes vacationed in the same vicinity in Maine.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the events following the aftermath of the Battle of Val-ès-Dunes. Prestigiously married to Matilda, daughter of Count Baldwin V of Flanders, he became involved in discussions with Edward the Confessor that were later to be at the heart of the justification for the invasion of England in 1066. In addition, William had participated in the establishment of good relations with a series of reforming popes and had also gained his first military victory over a ruler of a great northern French territorial principality. Yet, for all that was to follow from these developments, the event that had the greatest immediate political impact was Count Geoffrey Martel's takeover of the county of Maine in 1051. Probably as a result, by 1053 William was facing the likelihood of the breakdown of good relations with King Henry I and the possibility of fighting a war against him and Geoffrey.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Historic-geographical and Typo-morphological assessment of Lefke town, North Cyprus Sanaz Nezhadmasoum¹, Nevter Zafer Comert² Department of Architecture. Eastern Mediterranean University. Famagusta. North Cyprus.Via Mersin 10. Turkey E-mail: sanaz.nezhadmasoum@gmail.com, nzafer@gmail.com Keywords: Historic-geographic approach, Typo-morphology, Urban form, Lefke town Conference topics and scale: Urban morphological methods and techniques Morphological analysis in cities have been employed to conduct the research on the urban form and fabric of the place, that helps to determine the conservation plans or strategies of towns that reveal clues to their own history (Whithand,2001). Such analysis methods are a process that reviews the evolution and evaluation of towns throughout history. This paper focuses on, Conzen’s and Caniggia’s ideas, MRG Conzen’s historic-geographical approaches (1968) on planning level and Caniggia’s typo-morphological process (2001) on architectural level. Those methodologies help to understand the transformation procedure of different regions of city throughout the years and recovering how the city elements and urban hierarchy are interrelated. Additionally, the focus of this paper is to study the town’s morphological transformations, regarding its spatial, geographical and historical combinations. Within this context, Geographical and historical surveys done on the whole town of Lefke, in north-west Cyprus, and a detailed explanation on the typo-morphological analyses of some particular regions will be given in this article. One of the significant character that makes the town unique is its historical background which lay down with an organic urban pattern from Ottoman period. Lefke town was first formed with a medieval character, and through centuries of functional and physical transformations, has been highly influenced by British extensions, which were either prearranged modifications affected by socio- natural, economic, and political situations, or instinctive and spontaneous changes. All these historical factors, along with its geographical features, make Lefke an interesting case to be studied with an urban typo-morphological approach. Abstract:
Abstract:
