Abstract:

Why would a person who is terrified of cockroaches use them in a math lesson? The idea for this investigation did not occur to me until I read a newspaper article that described Italian scientist Paolo Domenici's research about cockroaches' escape trajectories. In particular, he found that cockroaches have preferred escape trajectories of 90, 120, 150, and 180 degrees from the source of danger (Domenici et al. 2008). Because this real-world information presents a unique problem-solving context for fifth graders to explore angles formed by clockwise and counterclockwise rotations, I overcame my fear of the creatures to develop this investigation.

Abstract:

The usage of doxorubicin (DOX) as an anticancer drug in cancer patient may cause several side effects. One of that is cardiotoxicity by inducing the expression of nitric oxide synthase which may release nitric oxide (NO) resulting reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cardiac. DOX needs to be combined with antioxidant since it could supressed ROS in the cardiac and reduce cardiomyopathy. Kelor (Moringa oleifera) is known as the source of antioxidant. This study aim to observe the treatment effects of ethanolic extract of kelor (EEK) on histopathology profile and concentration of NO in rats cardiac. The result from the hematoxylin-eosin staining showed that EEK improved the histopathology profile of rats’ cardiac. Compared with the DOX-only treatment, the structure of cardiac muscle cells treated by ethanolic extract of kelor is more well-arranged and the cells’ nucleus still visible. Concentration of NO was measured by cardiac puncture method. The result showed that the concentration of NO was decrease in line with increasing dose levels of EEK in combination with DOX. But at rats only given with EEK, the concentration of NO is quite high. In conclusion, EEK could be a cochemotherapy agent by reducing the cardiotoxicity effect of DOX.Keywords : doxorubicin, Moringa oleifera, nitric oxyde, histopathology

Kendala utama yang dihadapi dalam upaya pencarian bahan baku lokal sumber protein alternatif untuk mendapatkan pakan yang ekonomis dan efisien antara lain kualitas bahannya yang tidak sebaik tepung ikan dan tepung bungkil kedelai impor. Enzim protease, amylase, dan selulase bermanfaat untuk meningkatkan kecernaan bahan baku yang mengandung protein kompleks, karbohidrat, dan serat yang tinggi. Cairan rumen ternak domba telah dideteksi banyak mengandung enzim yang dapat membantu meningkatkan kecernaan bahan baku nabati. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memanfaatkan sumber enzim alamiah yang murah dan tersedia cukup banyak di Indonesia, yaitu cairan rumen domba, untuk menghidrolisis bahan baku tepung bungkil kedelai lokal (TBKL). Penelitian ini terdiri atas dua tahap yaitu in vitro dan in vivo. Penelitian in vitro bertujuan mengevaluasi kadar produk hidrolisis yang dihasilkan setelah TBKL diinkubasi dengan ekstrak enzim kasar dari cairan rumen domba (EEK CRD) dengan dosis 0, 200, 400, 600, dan 800 mL/kg TBKL, dan hasilnya adalah bahwa kadar total gula dan protein terlarut pada TBKL terhidrolisis meningkat apabila konsentrasi EEK CRD bertambah. Penelitian in vivo bertujuan menguji pemakaian TBKL yang telah dihidrolisis dengan dosis yang terpilih (dosis 800 mL EEK CRD/kg TBKL) dalam formulasi pakan ikan nila dengan 5 perlakuan dan 3 ulangan. Ikan uji adalah nila berukuran rata-rata 2,48 ± 0,0183 g per ekor, dan dipelihara di 15 akuarium berukuran 50 cm x 60 cm x 50 cm yang diisi masing-masing 10 ekor selama 40 hari percobaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan TBKL terhidrolisis dalam formulasi pakan menghasilkan peningkatan signifikan (P<0,05) pada parameter efisiensi pakan dibandingkan pakan kontrolnya, tetapi tidak signifikan (P>0,05) untuk parameter laju pertumbuhan, konsumsi pakan, retensi protein, dan retensi lemak. Tidak ada perbedaan signifikan (P>0,05) untuk tingkat sintasan di antara kelima perlakuan. EEK CRD dapat meningkatkan efisiensi pemanfaatan pakan melalui predigestion terhadap nutrien protein kompleks dan karbohidrat dalam suatu bahan.

INTISARI Penelitian sebelumnya membuktikan bahwa infus rambut dan jus biji jagung memiliki efek antihipertensi pada tikus jantan sehingga dapat dikembangkan dalam bentuk ekstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan efek antihipertensi ekstrak etanol kombinasi rambut dan biji jagung (EEK-RBJ) pada tikus hipertensi yang diinduksi monosodium glutamat (MSG). EEK-RBJ dibuat menggunakan metode maserasi. Tikus hipertensi dibuat dengan cara pemberian MSG 100 mg/kgBB/hari selama 14 hari sampai tekanan darah sistol ≥ 155 mmHg. Tikus hipertensi yang digunakan sebanyak 25 ekor, dibagi menjadi 5 kelompok yaitu kelompok kontrol hipertensi (CMC-Na 0,5% 12,5 mL/kgBB/hari), kelompok furosemid 5,04 mg/kgBB/hari), dan kelompok EEK-RBJ (125, 250 dan 500) mg/kgBB/hari. Sediaan uji diberikan satu kali sehari selama 14 hari (p.o). Data yang diamati adalah perbedaan tekanan darah sistol dan diastol sebelum dan setelah pemberian sediaan uji serta perbedaan penurunan tekanan darah. Data perbedaan tekana darah dianalisa secara statistik menggunakan uji t-berpasangan atau uji Wilcoxon (P: 0,95). Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa EEK-RBJ (125, 250 dan 500) mg/Kg BB/hari selama 14 hari mampu menurunkan tekanan darah sistol dan diastol tikus hipertensi dengan pola tergantung dosis. EEK-RBJ 500 mg/Kg BB/hari dapat menurunkan tekanan darah sistol dan diastol tikus hipertensi yang diinduksi MSG berturut-turut sebesar 20,04 mmHg dan 13,16 mmHg. Kata Kunci: Efek antihipertensi, ekstrak kombinasi, rambut dan biji jagung, MSG ABSTRACT In previous studies, infusion of silk and corn seed combination have antihypertensive effects, so it can develop in the form of extracts. The purpose of this study is to reveal the antihypertensive effect of a silk and seed corn ethanol extract (SSC-EE) on MSG-induced hypertensive rats. SSC-EE produced with maceration. MSG 100 mg/kg BW/day for 14 days orally used to induce hypertension condition in male Wistar rats until systolic blood pressure ≥ 150 mmHg. Twenty-five of hypertensive rats divided into five groups. Hypertensive rats in Group I treated with CMC-Na 0.5% 12.5 mL/kg BW/day and group II treated with Furosemide 5.04 mg/kg BW/day. Meanwhile, group III, IV and V treated with SSC-EE (125, 250 and 500) mg/kg BW/day. SSC-EE was treated orally once daily for 14 days. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, before and after of extracts treatment and blood pressure decline was observed and analyzed statistically using paired t-test or Wilcoxon test (P: 0.95). The results show that SSC-EE (125, 250 and 500) mg/Kg BW/day for 14 days can decrease the MSG-induced hypertensive rats systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p<0.05) with the dose-dependent manner. SSC-EE 500 mg/Kg BW/day decrease the systolic and diastolic blood pressure of 20.04 mmHg and 13.16 mmHg, respectively. Keywords: Antihypertensive effect, combination extract, silk and seed corn, MSG

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perbedaan prestasi bela- jar kimia dengan kondisi sosio emosional yang mencipkatan suatu kondisi yang belajar yang baik,efektif serta efisien: (1) antara siswa yang mengikuti model pembelajaran berbasis masalah dan pembelajaran eksplorasi, elaborasi, konfirmasi (EEK), (2) terhadap pengaruh interaksi model pembelajaran dengan gaya kognitif, (3) antara siswa yang mengikuti model pembela- jaran berbasis masalah dan pembelajaran EEK pada siswa yang memiliki gaya kognitif field independent, dan (4) antara siswa yang mengikuti model pembelajaran berbasis masalah dan EEK pada siswa yang memiliki gaya kognitif field dependent. Penelitian ini merupakan kuasi eksperimen dengan rancangan faktorial 2x2 posttest only control group design. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X Madrasah Aliyah Walisongo Jepara tahun pela- jaran 2013/2014. Pengambilan kelas penelitian berdasarkan teknik intake kelas. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan statistik deskriptif dan Anova dua jalur. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan (1) perbedaan signifikan terhadap variable prestasi belajar kimia dan kondisi sosio emosional siswa se- cara bersama-sama (F=2,944; p0,05). Artinya, prestasi belajar kimia dan kondisi sosio emosional siswa bersama-sama menunjukkan perbedaan signifikan antara model pembelajaran; (2) interaksi antara model pembela- jaran dan gaya kognitif secara bersama terhadap prestasi belajar kimia dan kondisi sosio emosional siswa (F=47,456; p0,05); (3) perbedaan signifikan variabel model pembelajaran terhadap prestasi belajar kimia dan kondisi sosio emosional siswa untuk siswa yang bergaya kognitif field independent (F=34,337; p0,05); (4) perbedaan signifikan variabel model pembelajaran terhadap prestasi belajar kimia dan kondisi sosio emosional siswa untuk siswa yang memiliki gaya kognitif field dependent (F=17,912; p0,05).

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui respon dan tanggapan siswa terhadap komponen dan pelaksanaan pembelajaran dengan pendekatan EEK. Berdasarkan pengamatan saat pembelajaran diperoleh hasil bahwa: i) sebagian besar siswa memperhatikan informasi dan menjawab pertanyaan guru; ii) bersemangat saat diskusi mengerjakan LKS dan LLS; iii) Memperhatikan saat temannya presentasi dan guru memberikan klarifikasi (konfermasi). Berdasarkan jawaban angket yang diberikan kepada siswa diperoleh hasil sebagai berikut: i) lebih dari 60 % siswa menyatakan senang terhadap materi pelajaran, media pembelajaran, suasana pembelajaran, dan cara guru mengajar; ii) lebih dari 60 % siswa menyatakan bahwa media pembelajaran dan cara guru mengajar adalah baru; iii) sebagian besar siswa tidak merasa terbebani oleh tugas-tugas yang diberikan guru dan aktivitas pembelajaran matematika menarik; iv) 85, 3% berminat apabila kegiatan pembelajaran selanjutnya menggunakan cara pembelajaran yang telah diikuti dan 100% siswa menyatakan bahwa matematika bermanfaat dalam kehidupan. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa siswa kelas IX C SMP Negeri 12 Mataram memberikan respon dan tanggapan yang baik terhadap komponen dan pelaksanaan pembelajaran dengan pendekatan EEK

Abstract:

Extended exergy accounting (EEA) is a methodology which estimates the extended exergy cost (EEC) of a product or a service or the extended exergy efficiency (EEE) of a country or economic sector taking into account materials, energy, labour, capital, and environmental impact. The use of EEA results for policy or planning purposes has been hampered by: (1) the lack of data to quantify the EEC of most of the inputs, making it almost impossible to quantify the EEC of a product or service and (2) the lack of a conceptual framework to quantify in a consistent way the exergy of labour and capital. In this paper, we make a review of past studies to identify, synthesize, and discuss the different EEA methods. We identified 3 different EEA methods, that we further compare using the Portuguese Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishery (AFF) sector from 2000 to 2012. The equivalent exergies of labour and capital estimated for the AFF sector vary widely among the three EEA methodologies. We propose and test a new EEA methodology to estimate EEE which accounts for these fluxes in a more restricted scope but more consistently and that includes the Environmental Benefit (EB) that represents the capability of the forestry to capture carbon dioxide. Results show that the EEE of the Portuguese AFF sector has increased by 32% from 2000 to 2012.

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui potensi hepatoprotektif ekstrak etanol daun kersen (EEDK) dan ekstrak etanol buah kersen (EEBK) pada tikus putih (Rattus novergicus Sprague Dawley strain). 30 ekor tikus dibagi menjadi 6 kelompok yaitu kelompok I (diberikan 10 mL / KgBB CMC 0.5%); kelompok II (diberikan 3 mL alkohol 30%): kelompok III (diberikan 25 mg / KgBB sylimarin and 3 mL alcohol 30%); kelompok IV (500 mg / KgBB EEDK and 3mL alkohol 30%) and kelompok V (500 mg / KgBB EEBK and 3 mL alkohol 30%) for 15 days. Parameter yang diukur meliputi indeks organ hati, histopatologi hati, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, SGPT, ALP, total protein and albumin. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis menggunakan ANOVA dan dilanjutkan dengan uji Tukey menggunakan SPPS versi 22. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ditemukan bahwa terdapat penurunan yang signifikan pada indeks organ hati, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, SGPT and ALP jika dibandingkan dengan tikus yang di induksi dengan alkohol (kelompok II). Total protein dan albumin mengalami peningkatan yang signifikan jika dibandingkan dengan kelompok II. Hasil skrining fitokimia bahwa pada daun dan buah kersen mengandung senyawa alkaloid, falvonoid, fenol dan terpenoid. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa baik EEDK dan EEBK berpotensi sebagai hepatoprotektif pada tikus yang diinduksi alkohol.. Kersen have been used traditionally in various countries for medicinal purposes. This study was conducted to determine the hepatoprotective potential of ethanol extract of Kersen leaves (EEKL) and ethanol extract of Kersen fruits (EEKF) in laboratory rats (Rattus novergicus Sprague Dawley strain). 30 rats were divided into 6 groups namely group I (given 10mL/KgBW CMC 0.5%); group II (given 3mL 30% alcohol); group III (given 25 mg / KgBW silymarin and 3 mL of 30% alcohol); group IV (given 500 mg/kg BW of EEKL and 3mL of 30% alcohol); and group V (given 500 mg/kg BW of EEKF and 3mL of 30% alcohol) for 15 days. The parameters measured included the index of the liver, liver histopathology, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, SGPT, ALP, total protein, and albumin. The obtained data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey test using SPSS version 22.From the results of the study, it was found that there was a significant decrease in the index of the liver, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, SGPT, and ALP compared to the rats induced with alcohol (group II). Total protein and albumin experienced a significant increase compared to group II. Phytochemical screening results showed that the leaves and cherries contain an alkaloid, flavonoid, phenols, and terpenoids. Abstract:

The goal of this study was to detect endopolyploidy of Ligularia sibirica from populations existed in different ecological conditions. This is important step to elaborate the appropriate protection measures of rare and endangered species, which should be based on understanding of ongoing processes in populations. From this point of view the knowledge of genetic diversity, including endopolyploidy level between and within populations, is crucial. L. sibirica is endangered and protected plant species in Latvia which is included in the protected plants list of EU Habitat directive 92/43/EEK Annexes 2 and 4. Perennial herbaceous plant L. sibirica is one of two species of genus Ligularia in Europe. According to the previous data, this species has been disappeared from all previously known locations in Latvia. However, some new locations were found in central part of the country recently. Determination of edopolyploidy level of L. sibirica was performed by the BD FACSJazz® cell sorter (BD Biosciences, USA) with flow cytometer function. In young leafs nine relative fluorescence DNA peaks from 2C up to 64 C were detected. The most common was 2C peak presented in 93% and 63% of samples from Zušu-Staiņu sulphur spring and Krustkalni Nature reserve populations respectively.

Pendekatan saintifik (5M) yang meliputi keterampilan proses mengamati, menanya, mengumpulkan informasi, mengasosiasi dan mengkomunikasikan perlu disinergikan dengan standar proses eksplorasi, elaborasi, dan konfirmasi (EEK). Kedua keterampilan (5M dan EK) inilah yang menjadi pemandu bagi guru untuk memilih model (dan metode) pembelajaran serta alat penilaian otentik yang sesuai. Dalam rangka membantu para guru untuk mengimplemantasikan kurikulum 2013, Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan menyiapkan buku guru dan buku siswa. Namun demikian para guru dapat memodifikasi dan mengembangkan sendiri. Pengembangan instrumen pembelajaran disesuaikan dengan karakteristik para siswa dan lingkungan belajar-nya, sehingga mutu proses dan hasil pembelajaran dapat ditingkatkan. Pengem-bangan mutu pembelajaran seperti ini sekaligus menjadi sarana bagi para guru untuk mengembangkan profesinya secara berkelanjutan. The later Middle Ages was the high moment of the popular, vernacular sermon, yet relatively few examples of extraliturgical sermons can be recovered from the written evidence. Latin collections of sermon cycles—those preached in the context of the mass liturgy and saints' days—were produced in large quantities in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, functioning more or less directly as exemplars for the actual sermons that would then be preached in the local vernaculars of western Europe. In England, such Latin sermon collections of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries often include some vernacular materials, especially lyrics, and many treatises are extant that provide priests with the materials to make sermons on a wide range of topics and for an indefinite number of occasions. Of the relatively few English sermons and sermon collections extant from the period, however, by far the greatest number are, like the Latin cycles, those keyed to the cycle of Sunday texts and to saints' days, whose very formality militates against a sense of them as representative of the most common forms and themes of vernacular sermons, particularly those earnestly preached on the occasions like that which Chaucer satirically describes in theSummoner's Tale, when “ther wente a lymytour aboute / To preche, and eek to begge, it is no doubte” (3.1711–1712). With so few examples of non-liturgical sermons extant, our sense both of the reality and of the satire is incomplete.

Anthropometric screening has been recommended for the detection of undernutrition as it is simple, inexpensive and non-invasive. However, a recent study estimating the prevalence of undernutrition on admission to hospital in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, highlighted that the anthropometric reference data currently available in the UK and Republic of Ireland are inadequate to accurately determine nutritional status. In order to provide current anthropometric data, we carried out a cross-sectional study of 874 free-living, apparently healthy Irish-born elderly individuals aged over 65 years. Height, weight, triceps skinfold thickness, mid-arm and calf circumference were measured, values for BMI, mid-arm muscle circumference and arm muscle area were calculated and smoothed centile data derived for each variable. One-third of these elderly individuals had a BMI between 20–25 k/2, approximately two-thirds (68·5 % of males and 61 % of females) were classified as overweight or obese, almost one-fifth having a BMI over 30 k/2(17 % of men and 20 % of women). Very few were underweight, only 3 % having a BMI below 20 k/2. Height, weight, BMI and muscle reserves decreased with increasing age. The reduction in muscle size was associated with lower handgrip strength. Fat reserves declined with age in females only. Just over half of elderly Irish women reported participating in active leisure of 20 min duration four or more time/eek, although 13 % reported having no involvement in active leisure. These data for the Irish elderly extend the data generated from a recent countrywide survey of Irish adults aged 18–64 years, thus providing suitable reference standards for nutritional assessment of elderly Irish individuals.

Variabel dependen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah relevansi informasi akuntansi (LAGT) yang diukur dengan jarak antara waktu berakhirnya tahun fiskal dengan tanggal pelaporan di Bursa Eek Indonesia, variabel independen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah sistem Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) yang diukur menggunakan dummy dimana 1 untuk perusahaan yang menggunakan ERP dan 0 untuk perusahaan yang belum menggunakan ERP, dalam penelitian ini juga terdapat variabel kontrol yaitu konsentrasi kepemilikan, komisaris independen, leverage, profitabilitas, opini audit, dan ukuran perusahaan. Sampel diambil dengan menggunakan purposive sampling dengan jumlah sample yaitu sebanyak 52 perusahaan yang sesuai kriteria dengan 27 perusahaan pengguna sistem ERP dan 25 perusahaan yang belum menggunakan ERP. Data yang dikumpulkan adalah data sekunder dengan metode dokumentasi. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis regresi berganda dan uji asumsi klasik untuk analisis data yang meliputi uji normalitas, uji multikolinieritas, uji heteroskedastisitas dan uji autokorelasi. Uji f, uji t dan uji koefisien determinasi digunakan dalam menguji hipotesis penelitian. Hasil dalam penelitian ini sistem enterprise resource planning mempengaruhi relevansi informasi akuntansi perusahaan manufaktur. Dua variabel kontrol yaitu leverage dan profitabilitas berpengaruh terhadap relevansi informasi akuntansi. Sementara variabel kontrol konsentrasi kepemilikan, komisaris independen opini audit dan ukuran perusahaan tidak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap relevansi informasi akuntansi. Kesimpulan dalam penelitian ini adalah implemantasi sistem enterprise resource planning berpengaruh signifikan terhadap relevansi informasi akuntansi. Variabel kontrol leverage dan profitabilitas berpengaruh signifikan terhadap relevansi informasi akuntansi. Tujuan studi ini untuk mengidentifikasi titik lokasi rawan kecelakaan dengan menggunakan metode Batas Angka Ekivalen kecelakaan dan Z-Score. Data kecelakaan lalu lintas yang dianalisis bersumber dari satlantas Jombang dari tahun 2018 dan data yang bersumber dari media elektronik, variabel dummy dari tahun 2016 - 2019. Aplikasi rancang bangun daerah rawan kecelakaan Berbasis mobile, dibangun dengan framework Codeigniter dan Framework 7, MySql sebagai basis data dan Mapbox Api sebagai layanan peta digital. Hasil akhir dari penelitian ini adalah terciptanya aplikasi SIG berbasis mobile yang menyajikan informasi titik lokasi rawan kecelakaan dan tingkat kerawanannya serta notifikasi kepada pengguna jika berada di radius titik rawan yang dapat diakses oleh masyarakat. The purpose of the study is to identify accident prone locations by using the Accidental Equivalent Limit Limits and Z-Score methods. Traffic accident data analyzed were sourced from Jombang Satlantas from 2018 and data were sourced from electronic media, dummy variables from 2016 - 2019. Application of building design for accident-prone areas Based on mobile, built with Codeigniter frame and Framework 7, MySql as database and the Fire Mapbox as a digital map service. Abstract:

The Knight's Tale has often been cited as an example of Chaucer's use of "conventional" or formal style, in contrast to the naturalism of the General Prologue. As Charles Muscatine observes, "When Chaucer writes at either end of the scale of values, indeed, his style becomes correspondingly extreme. When he writes at the Knight's end of the scale 'Of storial thyng that toucheth gentillesse,/ And eek moralitee andhoolynesse,' he leans heavily on conventional forms." This formalism is characterized not only by the use of rhetoric and a "high style" of writing but also by the use of a classical setting and the patterns and correspondences found in such Latin epics as the Aeneid and the Thebaid. Chaucer's development of the idea of correspondence between gods and men, for example, yields an ordered, symmetrical set of characters. When this ordering of form is considered alongside the prominent presentation in Theseus' sermon of the order of Nature, it is not much of a leap of interpretation to assume that the Knight's Tale is in some way "about" order. However, when more closely examined, the poem seems to be more "about" disorder than order. Merle Fifield interprets Theseus' sermon in the following way: it counsels "the acceptance of eternal disorder as one of God's works (3057)" and it forbids."the expression of an ethical order in the narrative action of the romance." In fact, layers of disorder and order alternate. The emotional chaos and fruitless conflicts of Arcite and Palamon lead them to be compared to animals (1655-59, 2626-33), but above them is Theseus, who attempts to order the lives of his subjects rationally and whose symmetrical battle arena symbolizes his world view. Above Theseus is the disorder of Olympus, where the gods quarrel and scheme, and above them, if we may believe Theseus (2987 ff.), is the First Mover, stable and eternal.

Epilepsy affects approximately 67 million people worldwide with up to 75% from developing countries. Diagnosing epilepsy using electroencephalogram (EEG) is complicated due to its poor signal-to-noise ratio, high sensitivity to various forms of artifacts, and low spatial resolution. Laplacian EEG signal via novel and noninvasive tripolar concentric ring electrodes (tEEG) is superior to EEG via conventional disc electrodes due to its unique capabilities, which allow automatic attenuation of common movement and muscle artifacts. In this work, we apply exponentially embedded family (EEF) to show feasibility of automatic detection of gamma band high-frequency oscillations (HFOs) in tEEG data from two human patients with epilepsy as a step toward the ultimate goal of using the automatically detected HFOs as auxiliary features for seizure onset detection to improve diagnostic yield of tEEG for epilepsy. Obtained preliminary results suggest the potential of the approach and feasibility of detecting HFOs in tEEG data using the EEF based detector with high accuracy. Further investigation on a larger dataset is needed for a conclusive proof.

Abstract:

In order to quantify the visual reactivity of EEC to opening the eyes, the topography of EEG power spectra in a sample of 72 healthy subjects aged from 7-15 years, was studied. The EEGs were recorder at 14 scalp sites under eyes closed (ECL) and eyes open (EOP). It has been established that the absolute powers in total and in alpha band were significant- ly higher in all derivations under ECL as compared with EOP condition. Except for the frontal derivations, absolute power in theta band under ECL condition was significantly higher than that under EOP condition. Changes in delta and beta powers were seldom significant. In beta 2 band no EEG blocking was noticed in anterior area. Opening the eyes significantly influenced the values of asymmetry index in alpha band and total power. In all frequency bands and under both conditions, the differences of powers between the hemi spheres were found mainly in the prefrontal and laterofrontal areas. The results showed that the visual blocking of EEG was mostly due to a higher degree of EEG desynchronization after opening the eyes.

Abstract:

Twenty three infants with neonatal seizures were followed prospectively to a mean age of 11 months. Only 2 were pre-term and birth weight ranged from 1700 to 4230 grams, with 17 male and 6 female infants. Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy was the most common etiology (82.6%). Focal clonic convulsions were the predominant seizure type, present in 7/16 infants in which the seizure type could be identified. All infants had a neurological examination and EEC, and 18 had a cranial ultrasonography performed at the follow-up. Anticonvulsant medication was discontinued, if follow-up EEG and neurological examination were normal. At the follow-up, seizure recurrence was observed in 7/23 (30%) infants. Abnormal EEG, neurological examination and cranial ultrasonography were statistically correlated with seizure recurrence. We conclude that infants with neonatal seizures can remain free of anticonvulsant medication provided they have normal neurological examination, EEG and cranial ultrasonography.

Abstract:

Six years after the financial crisis that led to the collapse of the banking system in 2008, the over-indebtedness of households is one of the most important problems in Iceland. This study aims to cast light on a specific feature of the Icelandic credit system in connection with the problem of over-indebtedness. The main research question is whether the end of indexation of credit is close or not. The author argues, in the first place, that indexation of credit ex-post to the consumer price index (CPI) in negative amortization schemes is responsible for over-indebtedness. In the second place, the author describes the challenges ahead in the field of consumer and mortgage credit in Iceland in the light of European law (European Union EU and European Economic Area EEA). The incorporation of Directive 2008/48 on credit agreement for consumers to the Icelandic domestic order through the EEA Agreement allowed a preliminary legal review of the practice in light of EU/EEA consumer credit law, both at national and European level without a final conclusion. It has nevertheless led to the judicial review on the legality of some indexation alleged malpractices before national courts and to the EFTA Court for interpretation (mostly on Directives 93/13/EEC on unfair terms 87/102/EEC on consumer credit). A ruling from the Supreme Court is expected on several cases. A critical battle between the legality, the fairness and the legitimacy of indexation of credit is taking place in Iceland under the influence of European law.
