Great strides have been made in the last decade in high resolution transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) which can also provide elemental information via energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) or energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and proponents of various TEM techniques make bold claims. Convergent beam elecjron diffraction and microdifff action shine as techniques for defect structure analysis and means for solving crystal structures. The spectroscopies can now be used to map chemical state information at a level which until recently might be encountered in science fiction. As a pure imagin

Krzysztof Kieślowski (1941-1996), an internationally recognized Polish filmmaker, made seven feature-length dramatic films before creating the television series Dekalog for the Polish Public Broadcasting Corporation (TVP). Shot during a politically turbulent decade in Poland between 1975 and 1984, these seven feature films are lesser-known than his Dekalog series and the serialized Three Colours trilogy co-produced with France. Kieslowski started out as a documentary filmmaker, and these Polish period dramas provide an entry point into his cinematic world. In particular, it is worth noting tha

Educational Escape Games (EEG) are learning scenarios in which participants must solve a series of puzzles with a clear educational purpose in order to escape from a (fictional) locked room under time pressure. This paper examines two EEGs designed by teacher education students and play-tested with two Spanish classes (10th and 13th grade). The study focuses on the construct of learner engagement from the perspective of conversation analysis and investigates the extent to which learners engage cognitively, affectively, and socially. The results demonstrate that the participants jointly accompl

Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk’s Primeval and Other Times(1996), the most representative novel from the early period of her work, is widely considered to beautifully embody a mythological imagination. Consisting of eighty-four episodes, the novel is a unique work in that it integrates events which actually occurred in Poland into a fictional story set against the background of an imaginary village called ‘Primeval’. Notably, the word ‘primeval’, which means ‘the earliest time in history’, is used to name a place. Through the imaginary village of Primeval, Tokarczuk has created a new and distinct

In an early childhood education site, children, teachers, materials, imagination and the attribution of human traits to snails are elaborated on as key actors. Abstract This article analyses the literary representation of Nazi-occupied Ukraine in Rachel Seiffert’s 2017 novel A Boy in Winter. It does so by exploring the novel’s documentary and fictional influences, from which its concern with the genocide of the Jews and the German colonization of the East is crafted. The alterations and omissions from the historical accounts and the novel’s use of modernist literary techniques combine in a way that resembles the methods of other examples of Holocaust fiction, but in this case to create a distinctive allegorical mode. The article concludes by arguing
