The omnipresence of colors in everyday life has stimulated reflection from the beginning of philosophy. Reflections on color have often oscillated between objective and subjective interpretations. Especially since the experiments of Newton in the 1660s colors are regarded as objective realities, relating color to light. Each color has a specific length and frequency of electromagnetic waves. According to realist theories, colors are physical properties of material bodies and entities, and can be measured since they are written in the language of mathematics. The world is facing a situation without precedents, so that soon there will be more elderly of extreme old age than ever before. With a continuous decline in death rates and rising life expectancy among them, reaching 80 years and even over 100. Living longer with a better life quality doesn’t mean a healthier living, but a hospital care dependency related to health problems. We are facing a change of the demographic profile for which we must undertake a mentality readjustment in order to su

Abstract:
Currently, office workers encounter various stress issues, especially in the workplace. Thus, more design research for stress relief is crucial. Previous research proposed that the colour light can influence human emotion, especially blue and green light, which showed the effect of stress mitigation. Therefore, this study examines how characteristics of coloured lighting design in the resting area of modern workplaces affect stress reduction for office workers. In this within-subjects experiment, fifty volunteers in the early career age range were asked to wear GSR sensors on their index and m

Abstract:
The mechanism of lead toxicity in human erythroid precursor cells (EPCs) is the main aim of this research. Abnormal development of EPCs, the imma red blood cells, may involve with lead induced anemia. Human EPCs, the model in this study, were prepared by two-phase liquid culture (TPLC) technique. Highly purified EPCs (>90%) and substantial numbers of the cells (30.46 +-19.48x10[superscript 6] cells/blood unit) were obtained from this technique. By using TPLC system, the early stage of EPCs obtained on day 7 of secondary phase were cultured in the presence of lead acetate. Morphological stud

Rosales, María Fernanda. Impact of Early Life Shocks on Human Capital Formation: El Niño Floods in Ecuador. Inter-American Development Bank, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011668.

Full text
Abstract:
A growing body of research argues that early adverse experiences have lasting effects not only on later health outcomes, but also on human capital accumulation. This paper investigates the persistent effect of negative shocks early in life on children's health and cognitive outcomes, and explores whether shocks at certain periods matter more than others. The paper exploits the geographic intensity of extreme floods during the 1997-1998 El Niño phenomenon in Ecuador as a source of exogenous variation in children's exposure to a negative shock at different periods early in life. It is shown that

Abstract:
Although coal has powered the nation for generations and today offers well-paying jobs—often the best opportunities in more rural areas—coal negatively affects human health and the environment at every point in its life cycle: when it is mined, processed, transported, burned, and discarded (Freese, Clemmer, and Nogee 2008). Local communities— often low-income communities and/or communities of color—have for decades borne the brunt of these negative impacts, including air pollution, water pollution, and work- place injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.

Abstract:
In the last two decades, Kenya has attained middle-income status and established a diverse and private-sector-driven economy. On several socIo-economic indicators, such as education, gender equality, and democracy, Kenya scores much higher than its peers. More than two-thirds of Kenyans are under 35 years of age, thus the country’s development hinges on the quality of its youth—their levels of education and skills, their values and attitudes, and the quality of their health and productivity. While Kenya’s investments in the development of its human capital positions the country well to sustain

Abstract:
Truck platoons have many benefits over traditional truck mobility. Truck platoons have the potential to improve safety and reduce fuel consumption between 5% and 15%, based on platoon configuration. In Illinois, trucks carry more than 50% of freight tonnage and constitute 25% of the traffic on interstates. Therefore, expected fuel savings would be significant for trucks. Deployment of truck platoons within interstate highways may have a direct effect on flexible pavement performance, as the time between consecutive axle loads (i.e., resting time) is expected to decrease significantly. Abstract:
The services sector is composed of a diverse range of services--from retail and business services to education and health. Some services are used as inputs in production while others have direct impacts on human capital development. In the Philippines, services account for 60 percent of its gross domestic product and almost 57 percent of employment. Across regions and subsectors, however, the contribution of services varies. Using a simple shift-share technique is used which decomposes changes into three factors: the national share (growth effect), the industry mix (sectoral effect), and the r

The experiments were divided into 3 parts. Firstly, chitosan-based film preparation and modification were determined. The results suggested that the optimum chitosan films could be prepared from 2% chitosan in 1% acetic acid. However, the chitosan film was brittle and had low flexibility. Mechanical property of chitosan film was modified by adding different concentrations of glycerol, as a
