Cammock, Peter. "The characteristics and behaviour of effective and ineffective managers." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Business Administration, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4361.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent reviews of the management literature have expressed concern over the lack of attention to the issue of effectiveness. This study addresses this deficiency by describing the characteristics and behaviours of effective versus ineffective managers in a large New Zealand public sector organisation (the Department of Social Welfare). Repertory Grid interviews were conducted with 89 respondents in four offices of the organisation. A panel of judges sorted the constructs into a questionnaire which was administered to a further 365 respondents, Analysis of the questionnaire data reduced the 170 items into 20 scales descriptive of the characteristics and behaviour of most and least effective managers in the Department. Factor analysis of the scales revealed a three factor structure, suggesting that effective managers require ability in the conceptual, interpersonal and technical areas, Both the scales and the factors demonstrated a high degree of interaction, lending support to previous research findings that emphasize the holistic, and interactive nature of managerial work. Significant variations in emphasis on the scales and factors were apparent between lower and more senior level respondents. The thesis concludes by considering the implications of these findings for management education and development and recommending avenues for further research.

This study reports the findings of the masters studies on management styles that are adopted in effective secondary schools and examined how the effect of participative management styles could positively change the status of ineffective secondary schools. Two hundred educators and five school principals were sampled for the study. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data for the study. The respondents argued that their school principals adopted democratic, transformational, situational, and behavioural styles of management. They further believed that the adoption of participative management styles would positively change the status of ineffective secondary schools. They argued that by adopting democratic, transformational, situational and behavioural styles of management will encourage educators to: i) develop effective teaching and learning in their classrooms as they will be highly motivated; ii) adopt participative teaching methods that encourage learners to take part in classroom activities with confidence; and, iii) adopt team teaching which contributes to better performance in the classroom.

Raymond, Sylvie Marguerite. "Effective and ineffective university teaching from the students' and faculty's perspectives : matched or mismatched expectations?" Thesis, University of Exeter, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/40767.

Abstract:
This paper reports on the findings from an investigation conducted in the Arab Gulf region into student and faculty perceptions of effective and ineffective teaching practices at the university level. Samples were drawn from both genders in two dissimilar academic programs: the university preparatory intensive English program (IEP) and the mainstream science program. Specifically, this study focuses on the characteristics of effective and ineffective teaching from the point of view of four population groups: English students, English faculty, science students and science faculty. The method of enquiry made use of both interviews and a questionnaire. Means, ranking, and standard deviation followed by other analyses indicated that there was a high degree of similarity between students and faculty with respect to the perceived attributes of effective and ineffective teaching. It appears that the effective teacher is the mirror image of the ineffective by being imbued with a generous dose of personality traits in addition to skills. Both faculty and students in this research conducted in the Gulf depicted the excellent university professor as someone who: (1) is respectful, (2) makes classes interesting, (3) is fair in evaluating, (4) cares about students’ success, (5) shows a love for their subject, (6) is friendly, (7) encourages questions and discussion, (8) is always well prepared and organized, and (9) makes difficult subjects easy to learn. Findings of students’ and faculty’s perspectives suggest that effective teaching is the blending of both personality and ability factors. The key factor, however, remains the teacher’s personality.

MacDonald-Clarkson, Christine Marie. "Characteristics of effective and ineffective clinical teachers in nursing as perceived by students and faculty." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26005.

Full text
Abstract:
The purposes of this study were to investigate the characteristics of effective and ineffective clinical teachers in nursing as perceived by diploma school students and faculty, to compare the two groups in their perceptions, and to determine the influence, if any, that selected student and teacher variables have on these perceptions. The sample included 149 nursing students who had been supervised by at least 3 clinical teachers during their nursing education and 24 faculty. A descriptive survey approach was utilized for this study. Data were gathered using a background information questionnaire, an adapted form of the Nursing Clinical Teacher Effectiveness Inventory (NCTEI), and a Summary form. The NCTEI, developed by Knox and Mogan (1985), contains 48 clinical teacher characteristics grouped into five categories. Subjects were asked to rate an effective and ineffective clinical teacher from their past observations using the NCTEI. They were then requested to list the three characteristics they considered to be most important for clinical teacher effectiveness. Data were analyzed using a variety of statistical procedures. Results showed that students and faculty did describe effective and ineffective clinical teachers in nursing differently. Students emphasized characteristics related to Personality Traits, Interpersonal Relationships, and Evaluation categories while faculty focused on Teaching Ability, Nursing Competence and Evaluation characteristics. The three characteristics selected as most important for clinical teacher effectiveness were also found to differ between the two groups. The student variable of class level influenced the ratings of effective clinical teachers while age influenced the ratings of ineffective clinical teachers. These variables did not affect the three characteristics selected as most important for clinical teacher effectiveness. The faculty variable, number of years of teaching experience, affected ratings of both effective and ineffective clinical teachers. However, the variables of teaching level, employment status, and educational preparation did not. No significant differences were found in the characteristics chosen as the three most important for a clinical teacher to possess across faculty variables. Conclusions and implications of this study are addressed and suggestions for further research are presented.

Pérez, María Teresa. "Interprofessional Conflict: A Preventive Health Approach to Ineffective Communication in Nurse-Physician Relationships." Thesis, Boston College, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/3249.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Judith A. Vessey
This undergraduate thesis explores the underlying problem of interprofessional conflict and the resulting poor communication between physicians and nurses. It establishes the importance of understanding and addressing this subject within the health care community on a basis of reported negative outcomes, including compromised patient safety and quality of care. It also proposes a preventive health model as the most effective approach to describing the problem. An exploration of the antecedents to this interprofessional conflict identifies gender identity as having a significant role in setting the stage for the kind of relationships between nurses and physicians that harbor tension. Gender roles are discussed in the context of the developing professional identities of both physicians and nurses. The discussion further identifies how these social and professional distinctions result in the imposition of hierarchical arrangements that give way to oppressive relationships. The analysis proposes a need for dialogue –a form of primary prevention- regarding the oppressive internalized sexism that appears to have resulted from this hierarchical evolution

Abstract:
Managing employee engagement is critical to the success of an organization, but 85% of managers struggle with engaging employees. The purpose of this single-case study was to explore effective communication strategies within an organization and determine how managers used these strategies to increase employee engagement, productivity, and organizational effectiveness. Data were collected from organizational documents, observations, and semistructured interviews with 6 managers of a corporation located in the midwestern United States. All participants were working full-time for at least 3 years, had a managerial title, and were responsible for departmental communication. Moustakas's modified van Kaam method was used for data analysis. Communication theory provided the conceptual framework for the study. Three themes that emerged from the participants' interviews, observations, and data analysis were coaching employees, motivation, and consistency in communication. The findings of this study may impact positive social change by improving the organizational competitive environment through engagement in the community and society. The implications for positive social change include the potential for managers with direct reports to improve their understanding of the causes of engagement and disengagement, internal communication strategies that cause disengagement, and the benefits of implementing engagement strategies. The results of this study may provide managers with knowledge about employee engagement strategies used to improve productivity and organizational effectiveness within the industry. Community relationships could also improve as a result of effective communication.

Abstract:
Relaying information from a Chief Communications Officer (CIO), or centralized communications departments to hospital employees is not always efficient or effective. Employees may not be informed of important changes to department protocols or hospital policies. The purpose of the study was to determine the most efficient and effective forms of internal communications in the hospital setting. A total of 83 surveys were mailed to communication officers working in Tennessee hospitals in and east of Nashville. Sixteen communication officers responded. This low response rate may be attributed to poor designation of communication responsibilities and an abdication of responsibilities to an off campus (corporate) source. One significant difference was found regarding the preference of supervisor contact to relay feedback in the age groups of 31-40 and 51-60. Those 31-40 were less likely to prefer direct supervisor contact as their favored communications channel as opposed to 51-60 year olds who favored this method.

Abstract:
Email communication has become an integral part of the communication structure within organisations, but the problems it can cause are rarely assessed. The defects associated with email, which are related to both the quantity and the quality of email need to be understood by employees for them to become more effective users of email. Email training within organisations tends to focus on how to use email as a software package, without looking at when it is appropriate to use email and how to get your message across effectively. This thesis first explores email defects and how they impact on organisations.

Abstract:
Despite the effects of natural disasters on small business owners, the owners' communication strategies to alleviate loss to their companies' profitability remain problematic. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive multiunit case study was to explore what communication strategies some small business owners developed and implemented for facilitating resuming their business operations after a natural disaster. The targeted population consisted of 2 small business owners located along the Belmar Boardwalk in Belmar, New Jersey. The conceptual framework for this study was Coombs' situational crisis communication theory. The case data collected were from semistructured interviews and company documents. Employing member checking and methodological triangulation increased the assurance of the study's credibility and trustworthiness. The data analysis consisted of separating the data into groupings, identifying major groupings, assessing the information within the major groups, and developing thematic interpretations. The 4 validated themes that emerged were communication, community, disaster recovery, and stakeholders (employees). The findings from this study may contribute to social change by providing communication strategies that small business owners can use to mitigate losses from disasters, and facilitate businesses' and communities' recovery for reducing further losses.

Abstract:
This is a narrative inquiry study that describes the experiences of five junior high school teachers who participated in an interdisciplinary, voluntary professional learning community (PLC). Using identity as an analytic lens for the participants' experiences, and content-area literacy as the context for the PLC, the study describes how teachers involved in a PLC focused on inquiry and teacher learning storied their own experiences in the PLC. The participants' experiences highlighted three main themes which were (1) experiences with past ineffective professional development, (2) inadequacy, and (3) changes in thinking. The study highlights how these themes demonstrate the development of the participants' professional and group identities in their school setting. This study also includes a literature review and expanded methods section in the appendices. Keywords:

Camp, Tracy Kay. "Flush communication channels: Effective implementation and verification." W&M ScholarWorks, 1993. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1539623841.

Full text
Abstract:
Flush communication channels, or F-channels, generalize more conventional asynchronous communication paradigms. A distributed system which uses an F-channel allows a programmer to define the delivery order of each message in relation to other messages transmitted on the channel. Unreliable datagrams and FIFO (first-in-first-out) communication channels have strictly defined delivery semantics. No restrictions are allowed on message delivery order with unreliable datagrams--message delivery is completely unordered. FIFO channels, on the other hand, insist messages are delivered in the order of their transmission. Flush channels can provide either of these delivery order semantics; in addition, F-channels allow the user to define the delivery of a message to be after the delivery of all messages previously transmitted or before the delivery of all messages subsequently transmitted or both. A system which communicates with a flush channel has a message delivery order that is a partial order.;Dynamically specifying a partial message delivery order complicates many aspects of how we implement and reason about the communication channel. From the system's perspective, we develop a feasible implementation protocol and prove its correctness. The protocol effectively handles the partially ordered message delivery. From the user's perspective, we derive an axiomatic verification methodology for flush applications. The added flexibility of defining the delivery order dynamically slightly increases the complexity for the application programmer. Our verification work helps the user effectively deal with the partially ordered message delivery in flush communication.

Coopamootoo, P. L. "Effective online privacy mechanisms with persuasive communication." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2016. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/10265.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contributes to research by taking a social psychological perspective to managing privacy online. The thesis proposes to support the effort to form a mental model that is required to evaluate a context with regards to privacy attitudes or to ease the effort by biasing activation of privacy attitudes. Privacy being a behavioural concept, the human-computer interaction design plays a major role in supporting and contributing to end users’ ability to manage their privacy online. However, unless privacy attitudes are activated or made accessible, end users’ behaviour would not necessarily match their attitudes. This perspective contributes to explaining why online privacy mechanisms have long been found to be in-effective. Privacy academics and practitioners are queried for their opinions on aspects of usable privacy designs. Evaluation of existing privacy mechanisms (social network service, internet browsers privacy tabs and E-Commerce websites) for privacy experts’ requirements reveals that the privacy mechanisms do not provide for the social psychological processes of privacy management. This is determined through communication breakdowns within the interaction design and the lack of privacy disclosure dialectical tension, lack of disclosure context and visibility of privacy means. The thesis taps into established research in social psychology related to the attitude behaviour relationship. It proposes persuasive communication to support the privacy management process that is to enable end user control of their privacy while ensuring typical usability criteria such as minimum effort and ease of use. An experimental user study within an E-Commerce context provides evidence that in the presence of persuasive triggers that support the disclosure and privacy dialectic within a context of disclosure; end users can engage in privacy behaviour that match their privacy concerns. Reminders for privacy actions with a message that is personally relevant or has a privacy argument result in significantly more privacy behaviour than a simple reminder. However, reminders with an attractive source that is not linked with privacy can distract end users from privacy behaviour such that the observed response is similar to the simple reminder. This finding is significant for the research space since it supports the use of persuasive communication within human-computer interaction of privacy designs as a powerful tool in enabling attitude activation and accessibility such that cognitive evaluation of an attitude object can be unleashed and end users can have a higher likelihood of responding with privacy behaviour. It also supports the view that privacy designs that do not consider their interaction with privacy attitudes or their influence on behaviour can turn out to be in-effective although found to support the typical usability criteria. More research into the social-psychological aspects of online privacy management would be beneficial to the research space. Further research could determine the strength of activated or accessed privacy attitude caused by particular persuasive triggers and the extent of privacy behaviour. Longitudinal studies could also be useful to better understand online privacy behaviour and help designs of more effective and usable online privacy.

Abstract:
Work environment influences the effectiveness of care for patients in any healthcare setting. It is even more important in settings such as the neonatal ICU (NICU) where this project took place. When the environment is not healthy, communication may suffer and result in poor patient outcomes and, family, patient, and staff dissatisfaction. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to understand how the implementation of the TeamSTEPPS program, for nurses in the NICU, could impact the safety culture as measured by the AACN Healthy Work Environment (HWE) tool. Lewin's professional practice change theory and the AHRQ change model were used to guide the project. The previously validated HWE survey, made up of 6 standards including communication, and leadership was provided to 71 NICU nurses with only 41 completing the baseline survey and 4 weeks later, 31 completing the post intervention survey after the TeamSTEPPS training. An independent t test was used to examine baseline and post TeamSTEPPS intervention HWE results against the HWE benchmark. Results indicated that post intervention scores met the benchmark although scores did not meet the benchmark prior to the intervention. Data were also analyzed with a paired t test to determine the significance of the improvement in the pre to post intervention results. Three of the 6 HWE standards, skilled communication (p = .004), adequate staffing (p = .002), and authentic leadership (p < .001) reached significant levels post TeamSTEPPS training compared to the pre TeamSTEPPS scores. Through the use of TeamSTEPPS training communication improved and the potential for improvement in patient safety promotes positive social change.

Zouhbi, Oula. "Virtual Leadership and Effective Virtual Teams| Cultural Intelligence, Effective Communication, and Successful Projects." Thesis, Indiana Institute of Technology, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3634117.

Abstract:

For global companies to continue to grow, members must work and/or lead virtually. The purpose of my research was based on a two-dimensional model for measuring successful projects among virtual team members: effective communication and cultural intelligence (CQ) for team members working in a global pharmaceutical company. The main focus was on project management team members who work on global virtual teams and their team managers who lead global virtual teams. Currently, there is very limited empirical research that focuses on the relationship between cultural intelligence, effective communication within virtual teams, and successful projects. The researcher used triangulation mixed methods to explore the interrelationship among all three elements. It was hypothesized that all three elements are interrelated. Surveys on all three elements were used to assess both global leaders and project management team members who manage and lead projects virtually, working in collaboration with their global counterparts. Based on both the quantitative and qualitative results of the data, as well as the result of this interrelationship, further training on openness and global identity, adjustment to the current strategy, and education of all project management team members could then be recommended. If no difference in the collaboration level is found based on a high level of CQ, then additional opportunities for CQ would be recommended to the organization leadership.

Abstract:

There are so many different communication styles utilized by pharmaceutical sales representatives. This thesis handles the quandary of whether those communication styles are not only effective among the interactions with medical providers, but whether those effective means of communicating are embedded with ethical communication as well. The theory of symbolic interactionism and the philosophical basis of persuasive speech expound on the methodology pharmaceutical sales representatives implement with the people he or she encounters. Medical providers also need to perceive that their encounters with pharmaceutical sales representatives are congruently effective and ethical interactions, which is revealed by qualitative research methods in the thesis. Lastly, the pharmaceutical sales representative's effective and ethical communication provides recommendations in how to maintain the proper perspective of keeping these medical interactions with the greatest credibility and reputation. Abstract:
The purpose of this study was (a) to investigate the functional use of e-mail in a university setting and the relationship of attitudes toward and self-efficacy with email technology, and (b) to evaluate writing effectiveness in an electronic medium. The study also sought to determine if certain personal characteristics could serve as predictor variables for explaining e-mail use, attitudes toward email, and self-efficacy with e-mail technology. The population of interest was the teaching faculty at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University who had a published e-mail address. A random sample of 500 faculty were sent a survey via campus mail. A total of 262 usable responses provided data for statistical treatment which included factor analysis and multiple regression. Additionally, 30 self-selected respondents provided copies of e-mail messages they had written. These messages were rated holistically for writing effectiveness, and the ratings were examined for their relationship with the extent of e-mail use, attitudes toward e-mail, and self-efficacy with e-mail technology. The items on the attitude toward e-mail scale clustered into two factors, "Usefulness," and "Comfort/Anxiety." The items on the e-mail purposes of use scale also clustered into two factors, "Task Use," and "Social Use." These factors were similar to the ones on the instruments from which this study's instrument was adapted. The results of the regression analyses indicated that several of the variables were significant predictors of e-mail use, attitudes toward e-mail, and self-efficacy with e-mail technology. An attitude of e-mail's usefulness and self-efficacy with e-mail technology were significant predictors of the extent of e-mail task and social use. Self-efficacy was a significant predictor of positive attitudes of usefulness and comfort. Age was a significant predictor of social use of e-mail as well as of a positive attitude of e-mail's usefulness. Years e-mail had been used was a significant predictor of the extent of e-mail use and of self-efficacy. Higher ranking teaching faculty had more positive attitudes of e-mail's usefulness. The results of analyses of holistic ratings indicate no significant correlations existed among the variables. Recommendations for instruction and for further research are described.

Abstract:
Health care for the mentally disabled is often hindered by the inability of patients to identify and communicate their health problems to their health care professional. This study assessed the effectiveness of a nurse-patient communication skills training program for mentally disabled individuals. Forty-two participants who received a regular decanote shot (an injected anti-psychotic medication released over time) were randomly assigned to a treatment or control group. The treatment consisted of three 90-min skills training sessions on symptom monitoring, medication management, and communication skills. Assessments were conducted at an injection appointment pretreatment, posttreatment, and at follow-up. Participants were assessed by pencil-and-paper test on the acquisition of symptom monitoring and medication management skills. In addition, patients were observed in an audio-recorded interaction with their nurse. Results identified that communication training was effective in increasing the participation of patients during a nurse's visit at posttest and at up to a 1-month follow-up. Explanation of results and recommendations for improvements for future studies are discussed.

Machaczek, Katarzyna Karolina. "Barriers to effective communication between doctors at shift handover." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2014. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20750/.

Full text
Abstract:
Shift handover is a process during which doctors can exchange information, authority and primary responsibility for patient care. The level of handover standardisation may vary across departments and hospitals, and handover may be affected by the context in which it occurs. If during handover communication doctors do not transfer information pertinent to a patient's care delivery, it may lead to unintended negative consequences. An explanatory, mixed-methods study, using the principles of critical realism was conducted to investigate whether or not similar barriers to effective shift handover communication between doctors identified in hospitals around the world are identified by doctors working in hospitals in the Czech Republic and to develop hypotheses regarding how various individual performance-, work environment- and system-related factors may collectively contribute to ineffective shift handover communication between doctors. In accordance with the principles of critical realism the study included theory-testing phases: (i) a critical review of literature; (ii) a cross-sectional questionnaire survey; and (iii) semi-structured interviews with doctors. The results of the study show that doctors working in hospitals in the Czech Republic identify similar barriers to effective shift handover communication between doctors identified in hospitals around the world. However, handover between the Czech Republic doctors has its own specific characteristics. The inadequacies of the social, systemic and environmental features that make up different contexts in which handover is conducted collectively contribute to ineffective shift handover communication. For example, a systemic feature (e.g. the absence of training), may lead to specific doctors' beliefs (e.g. handover is meaningless), which in turn trigger certainbehaviours (e.g. doctors go home without communicating either verbally or in writing the work carried out during the previous shift), that tend towards a particular kind of outcome (e.g. the absence of handover). Consequently, the division of barriers to handover into one-dimensional categories such as 'the individual performance', 'the system' or 'the social environment', has emerged as superficial as it does not adequately reflect the reality of the context and process of handover communication. Any interventions and programmes, which aim to enhance communication between doctors at shift handover, may need therefore to address the multidimensional nature of handover communication.

The lack of communication facilities in developing countries is a constraint to social, political and economic empowerment of the people. However, advances in technology promise to deliver voice, video and data communication services, that are urgently needed, under a common packet switched communication network. Using Zambia as a case study, the cost effectiveness of three design scenarios which involve a hybrid of radio and microwave, radio and satellite, and radio and optic fibre were evaluated. The communication links in each scenario were modelled as E1 trunks. The cost of establishing these links was determined. Each scenario was then subjected to generic input traffic patterns using a multiclass queueing network analysis model to determine its effectiveness. Our findings show that the scenario involving the microwave links as inter-regional links has the lowest cost. The second is the scenario involving satellite inter-regional links and the most expensive is the scenario involving optic fibre inter-regional links. Furthermore, the microwave- radio hybrid scenario was found to have the smallest cost-effectiveness ratio of 17.9 followed by the optic fibre-radio scenario with 20.3 and finally the satellite-radio scenario with 892.9. These results effectively imply that the microwave-radio hybrid scenario is a better option for developing countries.

Abstract:
Patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments for cancer often experience adverse side effects, including cognitive deficits. These deficits impact the patient's ability to communicate effectively with their oncology provider. Ineffective communication can adversely affect patient outcomes and decrease patient-provider satisfaction. The resulting poor communication can contribute to poor patient outcomes. This systematic literature review focused on assistive communication tools that could be used in an outpatient oncology setting to improve patient-provider communication. The literature review findings led to the development of a resource for providers that includes 15 communication tools that can be used to assess and improve communication in cancer care. Initially 4, 533 articles were identified using the search terms; cancer patient/providers, communication tools, chemo brain, and improving/ineffective communications. Articles were selected for inclusion that included communication tools, which assisted oncology providers in improving cancer care. Articles were excluded if they were not specific to cancer patients and did not contain communication tools. Analysis of the systematic review of the literature utilized Bandolier's hierarchy levels of evidence. The Health Promotion Model serves as the theoretical framework to guide the project. Oncology providers that utilized communication tools with patients found an 116% improvement in documentation of symptoms, adverse effects, and corresponding medical management compared to providers who did not use communication tools. Implementation of communication tools in outpatient oncology settings can result in a positive social change in the patient-provider relationship during cancer treatment.

Abstract:
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Magister Technologiae: Public Relations Management in the Faculty of Informatics and Design the Cape Peninsula University of Technology 2013
The perception that an organisation wants its stakeholders to have is its desired identity. Its actual identity is what the stakeholders actually know or think about the organisation (Walker, 2010: 366). Stakeholder loyalty is an invaluable and positive consequence of any organisation’s effective communication. An organisation’s management should be proactive in the face of any negativity (finding its way into businesses and in the fragile and sensitive circumstances of stakeholder relationships). There is a gap between organisations and their specific stakeholders as a cumulative result of misinformation or lack of information. Organisational communication, especially via the press, enhances sustainable stakeholder loyalty, which contributes to an organisation’s advantages and economic essences. The purpose of this study is to explore the dynamics of stakeholders’ effective organisational communication via the press and media reports on Eskom, and to identify and isolate critical elements in this dynamic process. Although the study is primarily explorative and descriptive, public press reports will be analysed to contribute to the larger purpose of exploration and description. This research draws on the aims of corporate reputation to assist organisational insiders and external stakeholders to activate positive organisational behaviour with consideration of media interpretations in order to answer the problem statement. The fact that Eskom is a government parastatal which was established to supply and regulate electricity with no other competitors does not imply that they do not have to work on a positive brand image, perception and stakeholder satisfaction. This is even more pertinent when it is argued that the taxpayer’s money is used for much of the excessive spending that the senior employees ostensibly enjoy. Whether an organisation is small or big, its priority of relevance is not placed on competitive success, but on its image with all its stakeholders at all times. In considering stakeholders’ perceptions, there are huge business expansion possibilities for corporate bodies and organisations whose business mission statements reflect stakeholders’ satisfaction and retention. This research applied content analysis, which exhibits both qualitative characteristics (description of variables and categories) and quantitative features (numeric evaluation of data) in the investigation, description, discussion and analysis of the collected data. The data comprised media reports on Eskom, as presented by the Cape Times, the Mail and Guardian and the City Press - three reputable South African newspapers. These reports were gathered within a period of one year: 1st July 2010 to 30th June 2011. A semi-structured interview was used to substantiate Eskom’s stakeholder values and concerns against the backdrop of the newspaper report claims. The outcome of this study points to the need for organisations to effectively communicate with stakeholders in and through the media on trends within the organisation, prevailing issues, management policies, change of prices and costs of goods and services. This collectively re-defines and strategically re-positions the mutual relationship of organisations and their key stakeholders by drawing strong links between the literature survey and the provisions of appropriate findings and recommendation imperatives for corporate communication specialists. This research could be useful to academics and practitioners, as it highlights the importance of effective organisational communication as a precursor to stakeholder loyalty. The findings of the study revealed that while Eskom, as an organisation, was making huge profits and sharing surplus bonuses, they remain insensitive to the complaints of their stakeholders. Effective organisational communication was discounted and compromised, as the stakeholders were deprived of proper information that could stimulate and sustain their loyalty towards the organisation.

Abstract:
Public use of the Internet increases as wideband connections become pervasive and applications suitable for media distribution grow popular. Group collaboration applications have attracted interest during recent years. Wireless connectivity and business applications also furthers a need for reliable communication protocols. Multicast is a driving force for new applications involving one-to-many as well as many-to-many user scenarios like lecturing, discussions, and collaborative work. In some applications guaranteed delivery of every packet is not crucial, while in other this is a requirement. Error handling in reliable protocols can present a substantial challenge already in a homogeneous environment. Including a plethora of end-user terminal types with widely varying resources it becomes even more challenging. Protocols and applications must therefore be able to handle receiver and network link heterogeneity. The thesis addresses some of the challenges facing the applications in this field, related to multicast and unicast alike. Although the obstacles each of them must overcome may differ, there are similarities with regards to possible solutions with respect to error handling or resource allocation. Error handling protocols are proactive or reactive. Proactive protocols transmit redundant information along with the original information, enabling the receivers to repair lost packets without feedback to the sender. Reactive protocols rely either on positive or negative feedback from the receivers in order to establish reliability. According to a definition of semantic reliability the reliability concept can be interpreted in terms of application semantics. It is proposed to view reliable multicast as a special case of semantically reliable multicast and to implement a dynamically configurable transport layer with an error-handling rule set that can be configured from the application or even from the sender in- session. It is also proposed to make use of the application's knowledge of specific semantics to improve on the recovery of lost packets, congestion handling, or resource allocation. The thesis also presents a bandwidth-sharing scheme for video in group collaboration using application semantics in the form of user hints. The presence of such events is made available to all senders via message passing between session members. As information relating to a user's interest in another user is conveyed, the sender may increase its use of resources on the expense of other senders. A scheme is proposed and a prototype implementation and experimental results are presented.

Abstract:
In the area of project management, it is well understood that effective communication processes impact positively on project performance. Despite this, project teams still struggle to develop effective communication plans that address their project communication needs. The evidence of this is that many project problems are attributed to poor communication. The literature addresses the needs and shortcomings of group communication and communication planning in general; but there is however, a scarcity of literature describing how to plan for the internal communication needs of high-performance civil engineering teams. With the limited literature available on the topic, this study seeks to validate how effective the current communication planning methods are at Aurecon in meeting the communication needs of its project teams. This qualitative research project is a case study of communication planning within the project teams at Aurecon in Port Elizabeth. A semi-structured interview process was followed, addressing specific questions, without limiting the direction of the interviews. Project team members, working on high performance projects, were asked for their thoughts, feelings and suggestions about existing communication practices and project communication planning. Overall, it was found that the existing communication-planning practices at Aurecon did not have any beneficial effect on how team members communicate. It was concluded that project teams would benefit from improved communication-planning processes that are more inclusive of their specific communication needs. Organisations working on high-performance projects will benefit directly from the research, which challenges these organisations to think more broadly about how they plan for communication at a project level. The research provides practical suggestions for improving the way that teams plan their communication processes; and it does so by focusing on the communication needs of the team members. Recommendations are made to professional bodies, tertiary institutions, project organisations – and most importantly – to project team members themselves. The recommendations to project team members include taking ownership of communication practices, asserting their views, as well as making their needs known.

Abstract:
Cognitive processing requires to flexibly combine information from functionally specialized neural processes that are widely distributed throughout the brain. Neuroimaging studies have consistently reported that functional network configurations are governed by two fundamental principles of brain organization: functional segregation and integration. Yet, the mechanisms underlying the dynamic network reorganization are not well understood. In this work, we present evidence for two mechanisms through which the dynamic system-level integration is modulated. On the one hand, the large-scale brain organization is mediated by transient changes in phase-synchronization, facilitating global information flow between distant cortical areas as proposed by the "Communication Through Coherence" (CTC) theory. And in the other, it is mediated by the ascending neuromodulatory system. Neuromodulators constrain local processes by selectively changing the balance of the excitation and inhibition of individual brain regions.

Abstract:
The research conducted an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field survey, the results revealed that Tanzania is still lagging behind in the ICT sector due to the lack of an internationally connected terrestrial ICT infrastructure; Internet connectivity to the rest of the world is via expensive satellite links, thus leaving the majority of the population unable to access the Internet services due to its high cost. Therefore, an ICT backbone infrastructure is designed that exploits optical DWDM network technology, which un-locks bandwidth bottlenecks and provides higher capacity which will provide ICT services such as Internet, voice, videos and other multimedia interactions at an affordable cost to the majority of the people who live in the urban and rural areas of Tanzania. The research analyses and compares the performance, and system impairments, in a DWDM system at data transmission rates of 2.5 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s per wavelength channel. The simulation results show that a data transmission rate of 2.5 Gb/s can be successfully transmitted over a greater distance than 10 Gb/s with minimum system impairments. Also operating at the lower data rate delivers a good system performance for the required ICT services. A forty-channel DWDM system will provide a bandwidth of 100 Gb/s. A cost analysis demonstrates the economic worth of incorporating existing optical fibre installations into an optical DWDM network for the creation of an affordable ICT backbone infrastructure; this approach is compared with building a completely new optical fibre DWDM network or a SONET/SDH network. The results show that the ICT backbone infrastructure built with existing SSMF DWDM network technology is a good investment, in terms of profitability, even if the Internet charges are reduced to half current rates. The case for building a completely new optical fibre DWDM network or a SONET/SDH network is difficult to justify using current financial data.

Abstract:
The thesis describes the design and implementation of an interprocess communication (IPC) mechanism within a real-time distributed operating system kernel (RT-DOS) which is designed for a transputer-based network. The requirements of real-time operating systems are examined and existing design and implementation strategies are described. Particular attention is paid to one of the object-oriented techniques although it is concluded that these techniques are not feasible for the chosen implementation platform. Studies of a number of existing operating systems are reported. The choices for various aspects of operating system design and their influence on the IPC mechanism to be used are elucidated. The actual design choices are related to the real-time requirements and the implementation that has been adopted is described.

Abstract:
The effective integration of multiple communication techniques is becoming increasingly complex, with the ongoing development of new media. The development of Web 2.0 and the growth of social media provides marketers with additional, possibly even alternative, marketing communication channels. This research explores the integration of social media, specifically Facebook, and the marketing decision making considerations from the context of the integrated marketing communications (IMC) construct. The study surveyed three consumer facing businesses to understand how marketers make decisions, determine if social media leads to more effective marketing and to understand if and how effectiveness is measured. A qualitative multiple case study method was selected which included interviews, direct observation and document reviews. The findings provide insights into marketing decisions relative to the integration of social media. This is complimented by a view of how effectiveness of social media can be measured in the marketing communications sphere. The issue of ROI remains a challenge and only one case successfully deploys this metric. In conclusion, the increasing complex business and marketing environment does not have a simple solution; therefore the Complex Marketing Communications Deployment (CMCD) model is proposed as a framework for reviewing the entire marketing communication system and to integrate new media.

Abstract:
Objective. To create a theory-based framework to guide the development of interventions for assisting genetics health services clients to communicate results of genetic testing to at-risk family members. Methods. Systematic review methods were used to collect evidence on the barriers and facilitators of disclosure. After appraisal of several theories against key criteria, the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) was chosen as the theory to base the framework on. The framework was developed through a qualitative process which incorporated the all the available evidence from the literature. A preliminary examination of the utility of the framework was done through a cross-sectional survey. Results. The framework explains the act of disclosing a genetic test results to at-risk family members in terms of the TPB. Results from the cross-sectional survey, conducted in a population not previously studied, were generally consistent with the information presented in the framework and found in the literature. Conclusions. The framework has potential to be used in developing interventions; however, results need to be replicated in prospective studies with larger samples.
