AbstractChronic diseases strain global healthcare economically, and integrating digital solutions are proposed to help in meeting the rising demand. Digital health interventions (DHIs) offer promise for personalized, and cost-effective health services, however, factors influencing their uptake remain unclear. We examined whether the probability of lifestyle DHI uptake varies among individuals with different educational levels and lifestyles, based on their attitudes and usage of e-services. We also examined the effect of sex and age, and the association between DHI uptake and both educational attainment and overall lifestyle. A possibility to start using a web-based lifestyle DHI was offered to a subgroup (n = 6978) of Healthy Finland survey participants and adjusted logistic regression models were used to investigate the factors affecting uptake. We found that higher education and healthier lifestyle, as indicated by lifestyle score, were related to higher odds of DHI uptake. However, the effects of age, sex, independence of e-service use, and competence to use online services varied across lifestyle score groups. No significant interactions were observed related to educational attainment. These results imply that lifestyle DHIs are less likely to reach individuals with less-healthy lifestyle habits and lower educational attainment. In addition, some predictors affected the uptake differently across lifestyle score groups, suggesting that implementations of DHIs might attempt strategies to optimize the participation rates in especially targeted subgroups.

Abstract:
AbstractRural areas encompass an abundance of cultural and natural heritage that offers great potential for attracting tourism. Nevertheless, many of these regions are neglected and deserted, facing many hard problems like limited job opportunities, poverty, low literacy rates, and a lack of basic infrastructures. In order to deal with these problems, we need to boost sustainable development by promoting participatory methodologies, engaging all interested stakeholders (public authorities, tourism organizations, cultural and creative industries, local communities, marginalised social groups, etc.) in novel co-creation of new touristic products and services (including real, digital or hybrid experiences). Using effective local and remote stakeholder engagement strategies as well as by adopting modern ICT technologies for developing high added—social, educational or economic-value products and services is a key element for boosting cultural tourism in such areas. In this paper, we first review recent state of the art practices and methodologies for Sustainable Cultural Tourism (SCT) in rural areas based on participatory approaches and modern ICT technologies. The proposed methodology first brings together all relevant key stakeholders to form hybrid (both real and online) communities (“SCT Innovation Hubs, SCTIHs”). We then formulate a concept for the establishment of a multi-disciplinary and cross-sectoral co-creation ecosystem for SCTIHs, based on (a) a participatory platform for consultation, decision-making and business model canvas creation, (b) a set of easy-to-use advanced smart apps/configurators to facilitate co-creation of new engaging hybrid cultural tourism products and services and (c) a digital marketplace to distribute these products, ensuring a fair distribution of profits for the co-creators and facilitating evaluation and identification of best practices. The main contribution of this study is to identify current challenges for SCT in rural areas and attempt to meet them by proposing a bottom-up and inclusive ICT-based methodology for co-design and co-creation.

Abstract:
Language is an essential component of normal development and a means for discovering the world. As we have seen, however, deaf children frequently do not have full access to communication until they have passed the most important ages for language acquisition. Parents and educators of young deaf students thus often struggle to find a balance between fostering effective early communication skills, which research has shown is usually best achieved through sign language, and the provision of English skills needed for literacy and academic success. Despite decades of concerted effort, most deaf children progress at only a fraction of the rate of hearing peers in learning to read. Current data indicate that, on average, 18-year-old deaf students leaving high school have reached only a fourth to sixth grade level in reading skills. Only about 3 percent of those 18 year olds read at the same level as the average 18- year-old hearing reader, and more than 30 percent of deaf students leave school functionally illiterate (Traxler, 2000; Kelly, 1995; Waters & Doehring, 1990). At the same time, there are clearly many deaf adults and children who are excellent readers and excellent writers. How can we account for these differences? What are the implications for educators developing English curricula for deaf students? To answer these questions, we first need to consider what is meant by literacy—that is, what is it we are asking students to acquire? Then, we have to understand how deaf students read, at both descriptive and procedural levels. In this chap ter, we consider only literacy relating to print materials (reading and writing); other possibilities will be considered in chapter 9. But is the question whether deaf students read well enough to fulfill the needs and expectations of their teachers? Is it important to know how well various subgroups of deaf learners read compared to each other? Or, do we want to know how well deaf students read, as a group, compared to hearing students of the same age?

Abstract:
This study explores the relationship between education, religion, and family size in Bihar, India. Bihar is an interesting case for examining fertility rates due to its traditionally high levels of natalism and low levels of literacy. Various literature on this topic was reviewed to identify gaps in the research. Data obtained from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) was then used to analyze how a woman's education and religious beliefs affect the number of children she has. Finally, ANOVA tests, Chi-square tests, and other relevant analyses were utilized to further investigate all areas of interest. The findings show that education plays a more significant role than religion in achieving a lower and more sustainable replacement fertility rate for women in Bihar. However, incorporating a religious perspective in educational interventions can help make them more effective for broader societal development.

The chapter presents the Quality Management: Teacher Professional Development model for quality education as internal efficiency in Zimbabwe's primary schools. The model is a product of a qualitative phenomenological doctoral study. The researcher analyzes quality management practices from three rural primary schools consistently awarded the Secretary's Merit Award for performance ‘par excellence'. The model is cost effective and work embedded. Teachers get professionally developed daily as they work in schools. As a process quality management model, it involves planning, organizing, leading, monitoring, and controlling. Teachers participate in quality management by being members of school-based committees or teams. The QMTPD model develops teachers in some of these aspects: effective teaching; classroom management; setting, marking, and moderating tests; diagnosing and remedying weak learners. Effectiveness of the QMTPD model is manifested in the literacy rate of above 90% that Zimbabwe has attained.

The tribal people of India consider North-East India to be a hotspot. It contains eight states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim, and it borders international boundaries with Bhutan, Tibet, China, Burma and Bangladesh. The Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, which is home to a broad spectrum of unusual flora, fauna and microorganisms, is located in the Northeast Region. The region has the evergreen forest of the Brahmaputra River valley, wide leaf forest, dense bamboo and pine forest and the world's wettest location (Cherrapunji and Mawsynram), all of which help to maintain the region's unique biodiversity. North East region is the inhabitant of more than 145 significant tribal communities with the most dominating primitive societies, including the Abor, Mishing, Rabha, Khasi, Kuki, Naga, Meitei, Apatani, etc. Most of these communities are culturally and linguistically diverse. The NER's tribal population is literate compared to other parts of the country, and it's worth noting that the literacy rates in Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim and Manipur are all higher than the national average. Despite their high literacy rate, India's North-Eastern states continue to have poor transportation, power and medical services. The healthcare system is in bad shape, with only a few hospitals and nursing homes. As a result, the people residing in this area rely exclusively on a traditional system of medicines made by traditional healers from plants, animals and mineral resources. It was stated that medicinal herbs are prepared using traditional methods, such as maceration, decoction, and infusion, either alone or in combination with other plants. The key species of medicinal plants often employed by the traditional healers of the region are Acorus calamus, Aegle marmelos, Asparagus racemosus, Averrhoa carambola, Bryophyllum calycinum, Costus speciosus, Euphorbia neriifolia, Justicia adhatoda, Melia azadarachta, Plumeria acutifolia, Sida cordifolia, Sida rhombifolia and Swertia chirata. This extensive work will aid the researcher in locating previously unknown medicinal plants in order to build a new therapeutic method for isolating new chemical entities that are safe, pharmacologically active, and cost-effective.

Abstract:
The incidence of diabetes mellitus is growing in the UK. As most diabetes care is performed by the patients themselves, structured education is one way to encourage their responsible participation in delivering effective care. Continuous e-learning by Internet has proven to be a useful method of diabetes education. “Return on Investment” (RoI) can be used as an indicator of the cost-benefit of web-based education. RoI is the ratio of money gained or lost on an investment relative to the amount of money invested. This report uses system dynamics modeling to predict the flow of patients in the educational system and the cost of their care. The analysis compared traditional and web-based education. Separate models were developed for each educational method and simulated until 2020 in one year intervals. The population of diabetic patients was adjusted at each cycle according to anticipated incidence and mortality rates. The population of educated diabetic patients was based on the educational capacity and literacy limits of each method. A report by the National Health Service (NHS) was used to calculate the cost of care by considering the cost difference between uneducated and educated patients. By 2020 with an annual rate of inflation of 3%, the annual cost of care is projected to increase to £3.67 billion for the traditional model as compared to £3.39 billion for the web-based model. RoI is estimated to be a ratio of 32.33. Investment in web-based diabetes education is not only a health benefit but also a reduction in care cost.
