Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between getting quality awards by companies and their financial performance in Iran's business.Design/methodology/approachIn the first step, the relationship between awards scores and financial performance by canonical correlation analysis was examined. Then, binary and multinomial logistic regression was used to determine the degree of impact of each financial performance measure on getting quality awards. Finally, two forecasting functions were explored: the probability of achieving quality awards and the probability of achieving different levels of these awards.FindingsBased on the analyzed data of 112 companies through canonical correlation analysis, there was a weak relationship between financial performance and getting quality awards. Also, by using logistic regression, no result was found to prove the impact of financial performance measures on getting Iran's national quality awards. It can be concluded that conceptually, deployment of excellence organizational models will not result in favorable outcomes, especially in the financial scope. Also, practically, excellence models have not been well deployed in Iranian companies, or these models do not fit to Iran's business environment. Organizational culture may not be consistent with quality.Originality/valueQuality awards are given to qualified companies following the establishment of models of excellence such as the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM). The main novelty of this research is to clarify the relationship between getting quality awards by companies and their financial performance in Iran's business.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report on the development of the excellence awards of the Dubai Government Excellence Program (DGEP). The programme reports directly to the Dubai government cabinet. The paper traces how changing priorities have over time been reflected in an evolving portfolio of excellence award categories. Design/methodology/approach – The study followed a qualitative research approach, relying on interviewing within the DGEP, analysis of DGEP presentations and publicly available documents, informal conversations with senior UAE public sector managers, and ad hoc observations of the nature of public sector management and government in the UAE and Dubai. Findings – The DGEP exhibited three key rationales since its inception in 1997. They were rationalisations of excellence, measured effectiveness, and efficiency. They overlapped with one another and were also overlain with additional rationales, such as e-government and teamwork. This evolution of rationales has been reflecting political priorities and global trends in public sector management. Originality/value – The paper adds to the knowledge of successive rationales for the evolution of the excellence awards scheme of the world's first integrated, whole-government excellence initiative.

Abstract:
AbstractStructure sharing (SS) and multi-mode integration (MMI) are types of sharing in designs that help in resource effectiveness. This research explores their prevalence in successful designs. To do this: (a) 5 award-winning designs from International Design Excellence Awards are chosen, information of these designs is used to construct their Function-Means Tree and this is used to check whether they exhibit SS or MMI, and (b) 250+ award-winning designs are examined via a longitudinal study to check whether they exhibit SS or MMI. The following observations are made: (a) both SS and MMI are seen at systemic and sub-systemic levels, (b) both SS and MMI are and can be present in designs and (c) close to 35% of 250+ designs examined exhibited SS or MMI. These are fundamental insights, have not been reported earlier and build on the existing work on SS and MMI.

Abstract:
In this article are considered the basic accepted types of mutual settlements and rewards for engineering and consulting services in the engineering field, as well as factors determining the amount of engineering and consultancy remuneration. As the significant impact on the quality and effectiveness of engineering services, as well as the successful completion of projects, is provided by the appropriate and timely payment of the consultantʼs work performed, the problem of determining the amount of payment for consulting services in the field of engineering becomes more urgent than ever. The effectiveness of engineering services is directly related to the initially properly built relationships with the client. Given the complexity of determining the real value of consulting services and at the same time the internal costs of engineering firms, along with regular attempts to discredit them by clients, the article reflects the main methods adopted. The article also covers the main methods of calculating expenses of consulting and engineering firms and their expenditures, as well as mutual settlements for the performed works performed by engineering and consulting services.

Abstract:
Theoretically, advertising has been regarded as a marketing communication; that is, advertising is subsumed under marketing. However, this thesis deconstructs the existing theories and argues that advertising historically was not a marketing tool due to practical conflicts within the British advertising industry. Field work was conducted by means of interviews in addition to document research of publications by practitioners. After the Second World War, marketing people in Britain adopted the modern marketing concepts from the US where marketing and advertising people used the same principles and practice of advertising. The thesis traces back to fundamental concepts in social sciences such as economics, sociology and psychology that marketing and advertising people applied to their disciplines. Then, relevant historical backgrounds including the history of advertising agencies, market research and account planning are explored. They indicate that advertising was not part of marketing communications but rather located between marketing and communications. The application of various social sciences and the historical backgrounds govern British agency people's practice of advertising research during the 1960s and 1970s. They used research to explain advertising effectiveness in terms of both communication and sales. However, they found some disagreements between their concepts and that of marketing people in their client companies. They felt more frustrated when clients and research companies used scientific principles and practice in measuring advertising effectiveness. The 1960s and 1970s events led to the origin of the IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) Awards in 1980. The IPA Awards were in fact the consequence of the past as they tried to maintain their stance of developing advertising effectiveness theories as opposed to those of clients and research companies for two decades. However, as the Awards grew and became one of the most recognised award schemes in the industry, they were used by agency people as a tool to increase their agencies' reputation rather than a demonstration of advertising effectiveness.

Casalà, Surribas Iolanda. "Comunicación de marca para vender. Los resultados de la construcción valor de marca desde la comunicación. Análisis de los Premios Eficacia." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Ramon Llull, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/350809.

Full text
Abstract:
Brands are recognized to be the main asset of many companies and their economic value is acquiring progressive interest in all business areas. The relevance of creating -and maintaining- powerful brands seems to prevail in today’s world. So it is the use of persuasive communication to contribute to this purpose. However, in recent times, the search of efficiency has led to a growing valuation of the possibilities of measurement and a immediate test of the results. This market reality, though, has frequently prioritized the short-term persuasion and not always contributed to the brand construction itself. This research aims to examine the common parameters of the communication that has been recognized for its high efficiency, and specifically, the relationship between the efficiency and the creation of a powerful brand. That is, we aim to give a solid answer to this question: “Is it possible to realize persuasive communication to create powerful brands and, at the same time, be effective in the short-term?” Based on the analysis of spanish Premios Eficacia (2006-2014), we are going to demonstrate that the answer to this question is affirmative. At the same time, we are listing the characteristics of this type of communication too. Throughout this investigation it is also offered a sample of strategic planning tools (from different companies and advertising agencies) to build up powerful brands.

Abstract:
This research clarified existing inconsistencies in self-assessment literature, and added to the body of knowledge for rating effectiveness of organizational assessments by defining relationships among rating effectiveness criteria (ratee, rater, rating scale, rating process) and measures (interrater reliability, halo error, leniency and severity, range restriction) based on extensive literature review. A research framework was developed from this review, and was employed in computing rating effectiveness measures at the individual (i.e., examiner or eight rating scale dimensions) and sector (e.g., Private Manufacturing Sector, Private Service Sector, Public Local Sector, Public State & Federal Sector) levels for a State Quality Award (SQA) using data from the 1998 applications. Interrater reliability (measured by intraclass correlations for each rating scale dimension) was low to moderate, and differed by dimension. Halo error (measured by the determinant of the dimension intercorrelation matrices for each examiner) was present for all examiners. Leniency and severity (measured by presence of statistically significant Rater main effect for each dimension) was present for 11 of 32 cases, and differed by dimension. Range restriction (measured by variance analysis for each dimension) was present for 22 of 32 cases, and differed by dimension. A post-hoc principle component analysis indicated poor internal reliability for the rating scale. To improve, the SQA should replace the existing rating scale and provide in-depth training on all elements of the rating process. The importance of the SQA using boxplots, histograms, and rating effectiveness measures to make fully informed decisions was discussed.<br>Master of Science

Teo, Wilson. "The effectiveness in measuring character development outcomes in Singapore schools through the Character Development Award." Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/704/.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2006, Singapore’s Ministry of Education started recognising schools for their effort in using effective character development programmes in producing holistic students who are both competent in their academic studies and possess good moral character. Although the history of character education in schools started in 1959, it is only in the recent years that formal awards with a set of evaluation criteria are used to recognise schools for their high quality character development programmes. Literature review shows that measuring the effectiveness of character development outcomes is a constant issue among critics of character education to validate the claim. The latest empirical research findings have given a strong indication that the outcomes of character development can be measured as long as the constructs of character are properly defined. The objective of the research is to examine if the current awarding process and criteria used for schools are accurately measuring the character development outcomes of schools. The quantitative research instrument used is the Collective Responsibility for Excellence and Ethics version 2.7 Short designed by Khemelkov and Davidson (2008a). The instrument is designed to capture the inputs and outputs of the key stakeholders of students, teachers and parents in the school community towards character development. A total of 1266 students, 210 staff and 396 parents were involved in the research across five schools with different awards. The findings highlighted the need for a constant review of the evaluation criteria used by awarding body to evaluate schools that are involved in character education. It is also imperative for schools that are involved in character education to have well defined constructs for character. These constructs will determine the outcomes to be measured, and hence, the character development programmes’ effectiveness. Through the findings, the study also made recommendations for policy makers and educators on areas that require careful consideration when implementing character development programmes.

Abstract:
AbstractIn higher education, anonymous student evaluation of teaching (SET) ratings are used to measure faculty’s teaching effectiveness and to make high-stakes decisions about hiring, firing, promotion, merit pay, and teaching awards. SET have many desirable properties: SET are quick and cheap to collect, SET means and standard deviations give aura of precision and scientific validity, and SET provide tangible seemingly objective numbers for both high-stake decisions and public accountability purposes. Unfortunately, SET as a measure of teaching effectiveness are fatally flawed. First, experts cannot agree what effective teaching is. They only agree that effective teaching ought to result in learning. Second, SET do not measure faculty’s teaching effectiveness as students do not learn more from more highly rated professors. Third, SET depend on many teaching effectiveness irrelevant factors (TEIFs) not attributable to the professor (e.g., students’ intelligence, students’ prior knowledge, class size, subject). Fourth, SET are influenced by student preference factors (SPFs) whose consideration violates human rights legislation (e.g., ethnicity, accent). Fifth, SET are easily manipulated by chocolates, course easiness, and other incentives. However, student ratings of professors can be used for very limited purposes such as formative feedback and raising alarm about ineffective teaching practices.

Abstract:
Abstract This study sought to understand the effectiveness of existing climate smart agricultural (CSA) practices used by smallholder farmers in Tehuledere District, north-eastern Ethiopia, using empirical data collected over 3 months in 2016. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected from primary and secondary sources, including historical climatic records and perceptions, indicatiors of climate change, impacts and responses. The study employed focus group discussions and a household questionnaire survey during data collection. Findings reveal that the majority of participants are aware of climate change and variability. The indicators of climate change include drought, off-season rainfall, too little and/or too much rainfall, and high temperature. The impact of climate variability observed by participants include: (i) decreasing crop yields and livestock production; (ii) increasing pests and disease; and (iii) decreasing water quantity and quality. The adaptation measures embraced to mitigate negative climate change effects include: (i) changing crop varieties; (ii) integrating livestock and crop production; and (iii) soil and water conservation practices. As far as CSA practices were found to be viable and effective response measures, support from innovative polices and strategies should be emphasized so as to address the barriers and bring about widespread adoption.

Abstract:
Intellectual property (IP) protection has been suggested to be essential in protecting innovation in product-dominant companies. However, with the development of service industries, the ineffectiveness in IP protection becomes manifest. Meanwhile, other knowledge protecting methods enable companies to maintain their competency without formal protection. This study examines the effectiveness of different means of knowledge protection. Specifically, business is classified according to companies’ offering nature, serving mode and consider about their business hardware. The effectiveness of protection methods is analyzed among these business types. Interviews were conducted with senior managers of 39 companies in China and Singapore. It is demonstrated that the choice of knowledge protecting method does not depend mainly on whether a company provides products or services, but on how the company produces and provides its offerings. It is found that the core competency of companies largely affects their attitude on whether to protect their offerings. It is found that in weak appropriability regimes, companies apply for patents not for their knowledge protection function, but for other benefits, such as getting awards or tax reductions, and improving reputation among customers.

Abstract:
The quality of entrepreneurship education at the collegiate level is correlated with its sustainability. Existing studies have focused on the construction and method selection of evaluation systems for entrepreneurship education but have lacked concrete analyses of individual effectiveness. Through a micro-perspective, this study conducted a data envelopment analysis to assess the efficiency of entrepreneurship education in eight higher learning institutions. The input criteria comprised the number of courses and available funding, whereas the output criteria consisted of the number of awards won in two major intercollegiate contests and the initial employment rate. In addition, this study further investigated the most efficient schools to find students' opinions on course content and entrepreneurial needs. The findings in this study may serve as a reference for optimizing collegiate-level entrepreneurship education resources, clarifying developmental goals, and improving resource efficiency.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the wheel of competencies was used for enhancing educators and students' mutual awareness within the teaching-learning processes. This chapter described how teachers could use this tool in their opening class to build rapport and confidence as future teachers in higher education. The competencies reported are from a post-graduate discipline for students in Dentistry and Veterinary at the UNIP-Paulista University of São Paulo in Brazil, named “Higher Education Teaching Skills,” as a mandatory part of their curriculum. The coaching approach applied in this discipline included reflective questions, discussions in groups, plenaries, and the wheel of competencies. The idea is to make the students aware of coaching tools associated with blended learning, which is the teaching-learning philosophy of the discipline. At the closing class, the students can build an action plan as a student or as a future teacher. Throughout the year, it is essential to follow these competencies to improve the students' confidence.

Abstract:
This paper explores the complexity of ‘teaching excellence’ (Kreber, 2002) in contemporary higher education. It describes how a university academic, who has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards, questions if they really are an ‘excellent teacher’ and if their student-centered philosophy is sustainable. An analysis of data related to teaching and learning effectiveness over a seven year period highlights a significant weakness in how the academic approached the teaching of undergraduate students. This had a subsequent negative effect on several levels. The paper concludes by describing the merits of academics ‘centering’ themselves between the corporate university and the needs of students in striving for ‘teaching excellence’.

Abstract:
Immediately after the Exxon Valdez incident, the United States Oil Pollution Act of 1990 was passed. This Act clarified the lines of responsibility associated with future oil spills. In addition to this Federal legislation, Louisiana lawmakers in 1991 enacted the Oil Spill Prevention and Response Act. Financial awards associated with this Act support a wide-range of research activities. Since 1993, 24 projects have been funded. The scope and nature of this research includes: • Oil Spill Awareness through Geoscience Education (OSAGE); • Used Oil Recycling in Louisiana’s Coastal Communities; • Evaluation and Characterization of Sorbents; • Landsat TM and Synthetic Aperture Radar to Facilitate Coastline Delineation; • Environmental Effects and Effectiveness of In-Situ Burning in Wetlands; • Bioremediation Protocol for Small-Scale Oil Spills; • Oil Spill Risk on Louisiana’s Largest Waterway; • River Time-of-Travel Modeling; • Composting Technology for Practical and Safe Remediation of Oil-Spill Residuals; • Predictability of Oceanic and Atmospheric Conditions off the Mississippi Delta; and • Phytoremediation for Oil Spill Cleanup and Habitat Restoration in Louisiana’s Marshes. Each of these projects, and others, are the result of the marriage of industry and university researchers in the identification and solution of applied oil-spill-related problems. The alliance is a good one. Important environmental issues are addressed because the selection process ensures each research initiative has the potential of being implemented by the response community. The work and knowledge gained from these projects is a clear indication of how industry and the university community can function in a collaborative manner to solve important issues — a significant partnership that clearly shows how both can benefit and a model for others to follow.

Hilbrecht, Margo, Sally M. Gainsbury, Nassim Tabri, et al. Prevention and education evidence review: Gambling-related harm. Edited by Margo Hilbrecht. Greo, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.33684/2021.006.

Full text
Abstract:
This report supports an evidence-based approach to the prevention and education objective of the National Strategy to Reduce Harm from Gambling. Applying a public health policy lens, it considers three levels of measures: universal (for the benefit of the whole population), selective (for the benefit of at-risk groups), and indicated (for the benefit of at-risk individuals). Six measures are reviewed by drawing upon a range of evidence in the academic and grey literature. The universal level measures are “Regulatory restriction on how gambling is provided” and “Population-based safer gambling/responsible gambling efforts.” Selective measures focus on age cohorts in a chapter entitled, “Targeted safer gambling campaigns for children, youth, and older adults.” The indicated measures are “Brief internet delivered interventions for gambling,” “Systems and tools that produced actual (‘hard’) barriers and limit access to funds,” and “Self-exclusion.” Since the quantity and quality of the evidence base varied by measure, appropriate review methods were selected to assess publications using a systematic, scoping, or narrative approach. Some measures offered consistent findings regarding the effectiveness of interventions and initiatives, while others were less clear. Unintended consequences were noted since it is important to be aware of unanticipated, negative consequences resulting from prevention and education activities. After reviewing the evidence, authors identified knowledge gaps that require further research, and provided guidance for how the findings could be used to enhance the prevention and education objective. The research evidence is supplemented by consultations with third sector charity representatives who design and implement gambling harm prevention and education programmes. Their insights and experiences enhance, support, or challenge the academic evidence base, and are shared in a separate chapter. Overall, research evidence is limited for many of the measures. Quality assessments suggest that improvements are needed to support policy decisions more fully. Still, opportunities exist to advance evidence-based policy for an effective gambling harm prevention and education plan.
