Abstract:
Theoretically, advertising has been regarded as a marketing communication; that is, advertising is subsumed under marketing. However, this thesis deconstructs the existing theories and argues that advertising historically was not a marketing tool due to practical conflicts within the British advertising industry. Field work was conducted by means of interviews in addition to document research of publications by practitioners. After the Second World War, marketing people in Britain adopted the modern marketing concepts from the US where marketing and advertising people used the same principles and practice of advertising. The thesis traces back to fundamental concepts in social sciences such as economics, sociology and psychology that marketing and advertising people applied to their disciplines. Then, relevant historical backgrounds including the history of advertising agencies, market research and account planning are explored. They indicate that advertising was not part of marketing communications but rather located between marketing and communications. The application of various social sciences and the historical backgrounds govern British agency people's practice of advertising research during the 1960s and 1970s. They used research to explain advertising effectiveness in terms of both communication and sales. However, they found some disagreements between their concepts and that of marketing people in their client companies. They felt more frustrated when clients and research companies used scientific principles and practice in measuring advertising effectiveness. The 1960s and 1970s events led to the origin of the IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) Awards in 1980. The IPA Awards were in fact the consequence of the past as they tried to maintain their stance of developing advertising effectiveness theories as opposed to those of clients and research companies for two decades. However, as the Awards grew and became one of the most recognised award schemes in the industry, they were used by agency people as a tool to increase their agencies' reputation rather than a demonstration of advertising effectiveness.

Doctoral thesis, Universitat Ramon Llull, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/350809.

Abstract:
Nowadays the importance of ‘the’ brand is undeniable. Brands are recognized to be the main asset of many companies and their economic value is acquiring progressive interest in all business areas. The relevance of creating -and maintaining- powerful brands seems to prevail in today’s world. So it is the use of persuasive communication to contribute to this purpose. However, in recent times, the search of efficiency has led to a growing valuation of the possibilities of measurement and a immediate test of the results. This market reality, though, has frequently prioritized the short-term persuasion and not always contributed to the brand construction itself. This research aims to examine the common parameters of the communication that has been recognized for its high efficiency, and specifically, the relationship between the efficiency and the creation of a powerful brand. That is, we aim to give a solid answer to this question: “Is it possible to realize persuasive communication to create powerful brands and, at the same time, be effective in the short-term?” Based on the analysis of spanish Premios Eficacia (2006-2014), we are going to demonstrate that the answer to this question is affirmative. At the same time, we are listing the characteristics of this type of communication too. Throughout this investigation it is also offered a sample of strategic planning tools (from different companies and advertising agencies) to build up powerful brands.

Sienknecht, Ronald Theodore Jr. "An Empirical Analysis of Rating Effectiveness for a State Quality Award." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34129.

Abstract:
This research clarified existing inconsistencies in self-assessment literature, and added to the body of knowledge for rating effectiveness of organizational assessments by defining relationships among rating effectiveness criteria (ratee, rater, rating scale, rating process) and measures (interrater reliability, halo error, leniency and severity, range restriction) based on extensive literature review. A research framework was developed from this review, and was employed in computing rating effectiveness measures at the individual (i.e., examiner or eight rating scale dimensions) and sector (e.g., Private Manufacturing Sector, Private Service Sector, Public Local Sector, Public State & Federal Sector) levels for a State Quality Award (SQA) using data from the 1998 applications. Interrater reliability (measured by intraclass correlations for each rating scale dimension) was low to moderate, and differed by dimension. Halo error (measured by the determinant of the dimension intercorrelation matrices for each examiner) was present for all examiners. Leniency and severity (measured by presence of statistically significant Rater main effect for each dimension) was present for 11 of 32 cases, and differed by dimension. Range restriction (measured by variance analysis for each dimension) was present for 22 of 32 cases, and differed by dimension. A post-hoc principle component analysis indicated poor internal reliability for the rating scale. To improve, the SQA should replace the existing rating scale and provide in-depth training on all elements of the rating process. The importance of the SQA using boxplots, histograms, and rating effectiveness measures to make fully informed decisions was discussed.
Master of Science

Teo, Wilson. "The effectiveness in measuring character development outcomes in Singapore schools through the Character Development Award." Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/704/.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2006, Singapore’s Ministry of Education started recognising schools for their effort in using effective character development programmes in producing holistic students who are both competent in their academic studies and possess good moral character. Although the history of character education in schools started in 1959, it is only in the recent years that formal awards with a set of evaluation criteria are used to recognise schools for their high quality character development programmes. Literature review shows that measuring the effectiveness of character development outcomes is a constant issue among critics of character education to validate the claim. The latest empirical research findings have given a strong indication that the outcomes of character development can be measured as long as the constructs of character are properly defined. The objective of the research is to examine if the current awarding process and criteria used for schools are accurately measuring the character development outcomes of schools. The quantitative research instrument used is the Collective Responsibility for Excellence and Ethics version 2.7 Short designed by Khemelkov and Davidson (2008a). The instrument is designed to capture the inputs and outputs of the key stakeholders of students, teachers and parents in the school community towards character development. A total of 1266 students, 210 staff and 396 parents were involved in the research across five schools with different awards. The findings highlighted the need for a constant review of the evaluation criteria used by awarding body to evaluate schools that are involved in character education. It is also imperative for schools that are involved in character education to have well defined constructs for character. These constructs will determine the outcomes to be measured, and hence, the character development programmes’ effectiveness. Through the findings, the study also made recommendations for policy makers and educators on areas that require careful consideration when implementing character development programmes.

Simmons, Peter C. "Exploring website effectiveness and the influence of the Sustainable Design Award website on decision-making concerning sustainability within AS/A2 design and technology." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2010. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7021.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD thesis looks at the meaning of website effectiveness and their influence on design decision-making. The research is focused within the context of designing by 16+ students and concerning sustainability. Design practice is explored within Advanced level General Certificate of Education (commonly referred to as AS/A2) Design and Technology, in order to define its particular characteristics. The study uses a theoretical position developed from the Assessment of Performance Unit s (APU) discussion document from 1982 as a framework to explore information retrieval within designing. The position of the study within designing and its place within research related to the use of knowledge, skills and values in designing is clarified. A literature review conducted conceived information retrieval as a characteristic of skill in the APU model. This study has established a consensus position on what is good practice in website development and design, and illustrates the structure of selected sustainable design websites, as well as assessing their navigation. The study indicates which types of information AS/A2 level student designers are seeking and how they use websites within their design work. The drivers behind sustainable design decision-making are identified. The understood consensus of sustainable development and sustainable design as an emerging area in designing is defined. The research is situated within the Sustainable Design Award (SDA) scheme that aimed to implement sustainable development into Design and Technology education and also outlines the content embodied in selected sustainable design websites. AS/A2 level Design and Technology education is used as the context for the main study. Action research was used to help develop the SDA website which was created as a primary assessment tool for the research study, concentrating on students aged 16 to 18. The usability of the selected websites was assessed by undergraduate designers from Loughborough University. A framework was developed and the effectiveness of the SDA website was measured before use, during use and after use . Quantitative and qualitative research methods were used to gather data from the students such as questionnaires, folio assessments and interviews. The results indicate a prominence of website use and sustainable design within AS/A2 level design work, however sustainable design is taught as a separate entity and is not fully integrated into design practice. Sustainable design websites were accessed by half of the 72 students questioned, but only 28% had used the SDA website. The information that the student designers sought fell into two categories: specific information and inspiration, supporting Lofthouse (2001a). The use of these decreased dramatically as projects progressed in AS/A2 level and undergraduate level design education, this pattern was consistent in website use, sustainable design and sustainable design website use. Cluster analysis was carried out on the sustainable design websites with the informative cluster identified as representing the appropriate strategy for effective higher level website design. This cluster included characteristics such as comprehensive content information on sustainability, inspirational images and product examples. Appropriate approaches to the detailed design and development of the SDA website are reported. Future recommended work includes a focus on before use, to investigate the affects of increasing awareness of the website. Relating wider sustainability issues to AS/A2 Design and Technology education is discussed, investigating further the use of eco-design tools as the discussion highlights conflicting opinions. An expansion to the cluster analysis to help define further the four website cluster groups. The development of a website that correlates the emerging patterns of website, sustainable design and sustainable design website use, with work on value judgements completed by Trimingham (2007).

Hope, T. "The effectiveness of the discretionary financial award, the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), in a tertiary college in the South West of England." Thesis, Oxford Brookes University, 2004. http://radar.brookes.ac.uk/radar/items/185eedbd-80b2-f957-0e26-31ad1e9484a4/1.

Abstract:
The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is a discretionary financial award being developed to support young people from low-income households who undertake full-time courses in further education (FE). South West College* is part of the national pilot scheme for this award initiated by the government in September 1999, which currently involves 56 Local Education Authorities. The aim of this research was to examine the effect of the EMA on participation. retention and achievement in full-time further education courses for young people from low-income households in South West College; and to identify the extent to which a financial incentive can improve post-16 recruitment, retention and results on advanced level (academic and vocational) courses. Theme generating student and staff perceptions were sought on the impact of the EMA. College data were analysed to allow for a comparison of an EMA and non-EMA cohort and any tentative identification of the extent to which remuneration had affected student participation, retention and achievement. Findings suggest that for full-time advanced level students from low-income backgrounds enrolling on a course in 1999, the EMA may have had a positive effect on retention, but that participation and achievement appeared unaffected in South West College. The findings differs from the national evaluation results that identify increased levels of both participation and retention, but have yet to comment on achievement. Student and staff perceptions of the EMA were that it is a good idea in further education and that it should help students in paying for additional and indirect educational expenses. The EMA appears to support widening participation and success in further education; however critical evaluation suggests that cultural factors, as well as financial or structural factors, may impact on students' decisions to participate, stay on and achieve at advanced level. The EMA may not generate a more highly skilled workforce to support economic growth (DfES 2002a). *The name of the case study college has been changed to protect its identity in accordance with ethical considerations.

Chikukwa, Tatenda. "The impact of extrinsic rewards on employee motivation and organisational effectiveness : a case study of ZFC Limited in Zimbabwe." Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10321/2643.

Full text
Abstract:
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Masters in Management Sciences Specialising in Human Resources Management, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2017.
This research project was aimed to investigate the impact of extrinsic rewards on employee motivation and organisational effectiveness at ZFC Limited in Zimbabwe. In the globalised environment, it is of important to ensure a motivated workforce because employees are the only asset that appreciates in value over time, thereby directly contributing to organisational outcomes. Employee motivation has been a major problem in manufacturing companies in Zimbabwe, due mainly to poor salaries and pecuniary benefits such as transport allowances and bonuses. The main objectives of the study were to determine employee perceptions of extrinsic rewards, ascertain the relationship between extrinsic rewards and employee motivation and determine the effect of extrinsic rewards on organisational effectiveness. The study adopted a quantitative paradigm, which entailed a structured questionnaire being distributed to respondents. The structured questionnaire comprised Section A and Section B. The sample size was 140, which was derived from a target population of 280 employees through the systematic sampling technique. The researcher used the personal method in distributing and collecting questionnaires to sample respondents and 98 completed questionnaires were returned. This equated to a high response rate of 70%. Furthermore, the data collected was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 24.0 for Windows. Upon completion, the entire dissertation was checked for plagiarism through the TURNITIN program. The study found that salaries, bonuses and transport allowances were amongst the top extrinsic rewards at ZFC Limited in Zimbabwe. Good financial rewards are vital in influencing the behaviour of employees, as well as in enhancing organisational outcomes. The researcher recommended that ZFC Limited should consider reviewing the reward system, offering competitive financial rewards and timeously rewarding employees. The research project concluded with directions for future research on the role of extrinsic rewards on employee behaviour.
M

Abstract:
95
Alternative Military Service, distributing the human resources from the army over the public services, is a significant innovation in the era of Taiwanese military service. Lienchiang County is composed of several islands and locates in a remote area in Taiwan. Due to its inconvenience of inbound and outbound transportation, Lienchiang County has been being challenged by the unbalanced educational reforms and developments. The main issue of this study is how to increase the efficiencies of the resources from the Alternative Military Services in order to meet the school needs. This study discusses the distribution of human resources and the reflections of Alternative Military Services on the functions/effectiveness among elementary and junior high Schools in Lienchiang County. The participants of this study are the staffs who are in charge of educational affairs in the army, the alternative servicemen on campuses and the service schools in Lienchiang County. This study reaches its findings not only by analyzing the documentary records and the government’s references but also doing the in-depth interviews with staffs, faculties and the principals on campuses, the administrators in educational fields and the alternative servicemen in Leichiang County. This study also discusses the conditions, policies and impacts of Alternative Military Service on the school effectiveness. This study shows that the servicemen on the islands of Lienchiang County adjust the military service well if they can have full supports from the army. The way that the superintendent/administrator manages and distributes the servicemen influences servicemen’s performances. The distribution of the human resources of servicemen improves school functions/effectiveness, leadership statuses, campus securities, teaching effectiveness and school organizations. In other words, the servicemen play important roles as assistant teachers on campuses on daily basis. Therefore, the reformative policies of military service and the characteristics of the servicemen will have the impact of the usages and performances of the servicemen.

Von, Solms Van Heerden. "Self-assessment as component of a continuous performance improvement strategy and quality assurance in education, training and development within the South African department of defence." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1971.

Abstract:
In a rapidly changing and competitive world organisations need to develop and improve their performance continuously to ensure a competitive advantage. Organisations need to determine their current status of performance constantly and identify organisational strengths and areas where improvements can be made. Periodic organisational self-assessments are therefore required to measure current management and operations policies, practices and procedures, in order to enhance overall business performance rather than solely concentrating on the quality of products or services. Traditionally, external inspections were more commonly used by educational and training institutions for the evaluation of institution and learner performance. These institutions are today taking part in a growing drive for internal self-evaluation, arising from the desire of institutions and Education, Training and Development (ETD) practitioners to assess their own performances. Self-assessment as part of an endeavour to sustain continuous improvement is therefore also appropriate for ETD providers in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). A new defence dispensation and a changing ETD environment in South Africa have created new demands on ETD providers in the SANDF. Although training units within the SANDF may function in a unique military context, national legislation relevant to ETD and the latest approach of openness and transparency into matters of the Department imply that military as well as non-military ETD in the SANDF is to be closely aligned with national training and development initiatives. As legislation does not make a distinction between military and private ETD providers in South Africa, most traditionally assumed differences are no longer relevant. A case study explored the appropriateness of conducting organisational self-assessment as component of a Continuous Performance Improvement Strategy and Quality Assurance within the SANDF. The study also investigated the usefulness of a Total Quality Management approach to quality assurance in the ETD environment and the impact of the frameworks used, available assessment instruments and the selected assessment methods on the significance of organisational self-assessment by ETD providers. This study's investigation of the appropriateness and significance of regular organisational self-assessments by training units in the SANDF thus has broader implications, as recommendations are also applicable to other ETD providers.
Educational Studies
D. Abstract:
106
Along with the rapid economic growth in Asia, tourism has been developing at an accelerated pace, and the number of outbound travellers multiplies every year. Nonetheless, as compared to other products, tourism products have the characteristics of intangibility, inseparability, changeability, perishability, seasonality, and imitability. As a result of these unique characteristics, trval agencies emerge and play a key role in bridging all tourism-related industries, scenic sites, and tourists. Since the greatest value of tourism products comes from the joy and unforgettable memories consumers obtain from travels, travel agencies need to consider factors like plane tickets, accommodation, restaurants, entry tickets, and others while designing packages so that the values of tourism products can be realised during consumers’ travel experience. However, package tours are now facing great challenges as the result of the competitiveness in the market. To enhance their recognition and brand image, many agencies have sought the endorsements of bloggers and renowned travellers or endeavored to win the TQAA Award (Travel Quality Assurance Association). Nonetheless, the question is whether such an accreditation is effective in promoting an agency’s products and further increase consumers’ purchase behaviors. The study intends to answer this fundamental yet critical question. Through interviews with judges of the TQAA and the stakeholders from travel agencies, this research aims to identify whether the determinants of the TQAA Award and the accreditation of the organisation can promote the brand image, improve the brand trust, and influence the sales. Methods adopted in the research include the collection of secondary data and in-depth interviews. The research finds that the TQAA accreditation relies heavily on the norm of “reasonable pricing, transparent itinerary, and service satisfaction” in its evaluation. Awarded agencies ascertain that consumers do show a positive preference for the awarded products, which in turn can enhance brand image. This research provides a general guideline for the package design of a specific tour. Implications and limitations are discussed as well.

Abstract:
103
Heterogeneous computer architecture is becoming the mainstream of computer systems. In the landscape of heterogeneous computer architecture, General-Purpose Computing on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs) is indispensable for supporting ultra high density computing. As the complexity of GPGPUs increases, designing efficient GPGPUs requires good tools to support. Among them, execution-driven simulators are often used to evaluate the architectural designs of GPGPUs. Execution-driven simulators can provide quite accurate and comprehensive performance data, but they often require very long simulation time, which slows down the process of design space exploitation. On the other hand, trace-driven simulators simulate only the specic components that are of interest, e.g. Network-on-Chip (NOC) or cache hierarchy, and rely on execution traces to mimic the operations of other components, e.g. processor cores. As a result, trace-driven simulators are fast and suitable for design space exploitation. However, traces are the execution results of the trace-generating machines, not target machine. Thus, trace-driven simulators often produce performance data that have large error margins. A recent trend in trace-driven simulation is to use the causality relationships among the trace events to adjust the event timing, instead of using the absolute event time from the trace-generating machines. In this thesis, we apply the con- cept of causality-aware trace-driven simulation to the evaluation of the NOC of GPGPUs. We take a widely used execution-driven GPGPU simulator, Multi2Sim, and study how to extract causality information from its execution trace. One difficulty in determining the causality relationships of NOC events for GPGPUs is the latency hiding mechanism, which allows multiple memory access requests outstanding at the same time. We discuss how to leverage the memory fence instructions of GPGPUs to identify the causality relations. The extracted causality traces are then fed into a well-known trace-driven NOC simulator, Garnet, which is modied to be causality-aware. Our evaluation results show that the causality-aware Garnet can match the performance trend obtained from the execution-driven simulator Multi2Sim, while the original Garnet cannot.

Abstract:
97
Aim to encourage SME, Taiwan government organizes various of award selections to reward enterprises, in which the “National Outstanding Small and Medium Enterprises Award” is the most representative among those that were organized by Ministry of Economic Affairs. As the highest honor of small and medium enterprises, this award aims to set a business paradigm which the awarded enterprises can demonstrate and share their successful management models with other small and medium businesses. However, how significant benefit that those awarded SMEs earn for practical management after winning awards still remain to be reviewed. This study is to analyze eight indicators of award-winning enterprises (in recent three years), including capital adequacy ratio, current ratio, net profit margin, return on equity, operating profit margin, receivables turnover ratio, total assets turnover, and revenue growth rate, comparing to the relative management performance with other businesses in the same period to detect the predictive validity of “National Outstanding Small and Medium Enterprises Award”. After comparing 31 “award-winning” enterprises and 31 “non-award-winning” enterprises, the result indicates that the capital adequacy ratio, current ratio, operating profit margin and receivables turnover ratio of “award-winning” enterprises are significantly better than “non-award-winning” enterprises. Meanwhile, there is no significant difference in net profit margin, return on equity, total assets turnover and revenue growth rate between “award-winning” enterprises and “non-award-winning” enterprises. Overall, the empirical result of this study shows that the operating performance of “award-winning” enterprises is relatively better than “non-award-winning” ones, and it increases steadily after enterprises were awarded. It shows that the potential excellent businesses can be selected through the “National Outstanding Small and Medium Enterprises Award” mechanism. In other words, this award actually has good predictive validity in business operating performance. Moreover, the research offers some practical suggestions that we can select small and medium enterprises which are excellent in management and have substantial contributions to society through the design of evaluation standard and accessing procedures. That is, the “National Outstanding Small and Medium Enterprises Award” corresponds to its purpose and reaches the presumption that to select the target groups simultaneously.

Abstract:
98
The aim of this research is to study the Little Green Shoot case of the elementary school’s environment teaching through reading method as well as the student’s learning effect on knowledge, attitude and behavior and to understand the advantages and disadvantages of applying Little Green Shoot teaching. This study applies the quasi-experimental research design targeting on three classes of grade five students of an elementary school in Kaohsiung City. Further, this study divides these three classes into experiment group 1: students read the books selected by Little Green Shoot teaching case but the Little Green Shoot teaching program is not carried out; experiment group 2: students read the books selected by Little Green Shoot teaching case and the Little Green Shoot teaching program is carried out; controlling group: students do not read the books selected by Little Green Shoot teaching case and the Little Green Shoot teaching program is not carried out. The research tool of this study includes the quantitative student survey and the qualitative teaching notes, observation records, meeting minutes and student’s reading learning sheets etc... The research findings show that reading books can improve student’s environment protection knowledge while the application of Little Green Shoot teaching is necessary for students to constantly improve their learning effect after reading books. It can allow students to gain broader and accurate living environment protection knowledge. In terms of attitude and behavior, the reading method can’t significantly change student’s attitude and behavior toward environment protection without implementing the Little Green Shoot teaching method. In addition, the Little Green Shoot teaching method can also help students to show their friendly behavior toward environment. If teachers can try to obtain resources to provide sufficient volume of books for the class, adjust part of the teaching activities, allocate sufficient time to evaluate student’s multiple learning performances and apply the Little Green Shoot teaching, they can save a lot of time for selecting books and planning the curriculum. Likewise, teachers can apply all kinds of teaching materials to conduct the interesting teaching activities in order to increase student’s interests. Finally, teachers can understand student’s learning effect and performance in all aspects from different angles through multiple evaluation method to avoid the bias of the single evaluation. Based on the above research findings, it is recommended that future research can expand the research target, type of the teaching case and research method to compare various research results.

Shikalepo, Elock Emvula. "The influence of financial incentive on teacher motivation and learner performance in rural Namibian schools." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/24521.

Abstract:
One of the challenges facing education systems worldwide is the motivation of qualified teachers to teach at rural schools. Teaching at rural schools is a challenge as rural areas are characterised by adverse living and working conditions, making qualified teachers prefer living and working at urban schools where conditions are more comfortable. Namibia implemented the financial incentive to motivate qualified teachers to teach at rural schools and improve learner performance. The implementation of the financial incentive in Namibia has received little research attention in establishing its effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the financial incentive on the performance of learners at rural schools, as this performance relates to teacher motivation. To achieve this, a literature study and an empirical investigation were conducted. An interpretivist research paradigm informed the methodology for the study. A mixed-methods research approach, which relied more on a qualitative research design, included a research sample of 28 teachers, five school principals and two education officials. Data were collected through interviews and document analysis. Individual interviews were conducted with education officials and school principals. Focus group interviews were conducted with teachers. Document analysis entailed accessing applicable documents of each research site in the office of the school principal. Textual data were analysed and presented thematically and numeric data were analysed and presented as frequencies and percentages. Key findings established that financial incentive has contributed little to the performance of learners in rural schools. The fact that rural schools are not properly categorised according to environmental challenges results in teachers not receiving realistic financial incentive. Teachers were therefore not motivated by financial incentive, but by other factors relating to being tuned to nature in rural areas, being exposed to lower living costs and enjoying accommodating school leadership and community care. A revisiting of the implementation of the financial incentive is recommended in order to negate shortcomings and enhance the potential of financial incentive to contribute to improved learner performance as steered by motivated teachers.
Educational Studies
Ph. Chih-HsiangHu and 胡智翔. "Phenomenological Research on AR-Guided Context-Aware Ubiquitous Learning (CAUL): An AR-Guided CAUL Design Model Based on Focused Learning Theories and Sources of CAUL Effectiveness." Thesis, 2019. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/m4b8z4.

Full text
Abstract:
107
Context-aware ubiquitous learning (CAUL) is the latest e-learning paradigm that utilizes a synergy of mobile, wireless communication, and sensor technologies to facilitate the learning with contextual and interpersonal information. In recent years, augmented reality (AR) has been widely-incorporated in CAUL designs to enrich and guide learners’ contextual and interpersonal interactions with its powerful capacity to overlay virtual information on physical environments. Therefore, the adoption of the new technology, AR, is bound to propel an evolution of CAUL designs and renovate the knowledge base of CAUL. However, such AR-guided CAUL designs have been identified with a lack of theoretical alignments with learning theories. Therefore, in this research, phenomenological research method was adopted to address the research needs and update the knowledge base of AR-guided CAUL designs. The researcher first systematically reviewing 38 empirical studies of AR in education published from 2016 to 2019 in 7 high-impact journals of educational technology by using a taxonomy that classified popular learning theories for CAUL. Second, seven domain knowledge experts were interviewed to check and provide insights about the identified current developments, patterns of variables, and the proposed models. In Discussion Section, the current developments were highlighted with the recent trends of such learning designs, and three stages of CAUL developments were identified. Moreover, the critical patterns were meaningfully organized with the unique AR functions to guide the future adoption of learning theories in designing AR-guided CAUL. At the end, a macro-design model and three micro-design models of AR-guided CAUL were solidly proposed. For researchers, this study offered a range of perspective research directions from (a) the potential learning theories to be incorporated in such learning design to (b) the components that were rarely investigated. For instructional designers, the current states of AR-guided CAUL, the patterns of the variables, and the proposed models provided insights that would be useful for reviewing and even revising current curricula. For teachers, the findings and the models could not only serve to highlight the effective components in learning, but also offer prospective patterns of variables that could be used to successfully guide the learners with AR.
