Abstract:
This chapter examines evidence for the effectiveness of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There is high demand for CAM among both military and civilian consumers and thus CAM for PTSD warrants thorough analysis. The CAM interventions reviewed herein include mindfulness and other meditative practices, acupuncture, yoga, relaxation, breathing training, and physical exercise. Although there are few rigorous studies of CAM for PTSD, available evidence suggests that these approaches are moderately effective. They would generally not be considered a first line intervention for PTSD at this point, but rather would be recommended as an adjunct to established approaches. The limited number of studies available, however, precludes drawing firm conclusions. Thus, future work should focus on better understanding the optimal uses of CAM for PTSD.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the potential uses of integrative psychiatry and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches for the management of patients with mood disorders. Mood disorders are among the most prevalent mental health issues affecting people today. A variety of pharmacological and psychological interventions are available currently for patients with mood disorders, however, many seek CAM for treatment. CAM interventions can include vitamins and supplements, herbal and botanical remedies, meditation and spiritual practices, acupuncture, and dietary and healthy living lifestyle modification. There is increased public interest in the use of integrative therapies in mood disorders. An increasing number of randomized clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of integrative interventions both as monotherapy and as adjunct therapeutic approaches to treat mood disorders. This chapter presents an overview of research regarding integrative treatment approaches for mood and affective disorders to provide clinical direction regarding the use of such interventions.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the overlap and potential synergies of integrative medicine and preventive medicine in the context of levels of prevention, acknowledging the relative deficiency of research on the effectiveness of practice-based integrative care. The goal of integrative medicine should be to make the widest array of appropriate options available to patients, ultimately blurring the boundaries between conventional care and CAM. Both disciplines should be subject to rigorous scientific inquiry so that interventions that work are systematically distinguished from those that do not. The case is made that responsible use of science and responsiveness to the needs of patients that persist when the data from randomized controlled trials have been exhausted can be reconciled. Integrative medicine is a framework for this reconciliation and, practiced judiciously, offers the promise of better patient outcomes.

Klein, Eili Y. Antibiotic Resistance. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199976805.003.0068.

Full text
Abstract:
Antibacterial resistance threatens the ability of physicians to treat infections, reversing medical gains and increasing the probability of morbidity and mortality in infected patients. Decreased antibiotic efficacy also threatens advanced surgical procedures dependent on antibiotic effectiveness, such as organ and prosthetic transplants. Even simple procedures consider antibiotic prophylaxis to be a standard means of controlling surgical site infections. Despite the link between increased antibiotic use and resistance, a large fraction of antimicrobial use is inappropriate, particularly for acute respiratory tract infections. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the most significant antibiotic-resistant pathogen, but new pathogens such as carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are increasing in clinical significance. Antibiotic use and resistance is rising rapidly in developing countries, particularly India, China, and various African countries. The inappropriate use of antibiotics must be reduced, and incentives for the development of new antibiotics should be increased.

Handmer, John, and Katharine Haynes, eds. Community Bushfire Safety. CSIRO Publishing, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643095618.

Full text
Abstract:
Community Bushfire Safety brings together in one accessible and comprehensive volume the results of the most important community safety research being undertaken within the Australian Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre (CRC). Using perspectives deriving from social science, economics and law, it complements the extensive literature already existing on bushfires, which ranges from ecology and fire behaviour to information about emergency management. In doing so, the book supports the increasing emphasis on community safety and the vital role it has to play in Australian bushfire management.
Managing community safety requires a diversity of knowledge and an understanding of the many social processes that shape and ultimately determine a community’s resilience to bushfire. The wide range of issues covered in this volume reflects this diversity, including research into gender and vulnerability; the law and its implications for public/fire agency interactions; the arsonist’s rationale; the influence of the media; the role of economics in bushfire management and decision-making; understanding declines in fire brigade volunteerism; bushfire safety policy and its implementation; the effectiveness of community education and risk reduction schemes; and modes of building ignition.
Community Bushfire Safety is accessible to practitioners, policy-makers, researchers and students. While the research reported has been undertaken in Australia, much of the material is generic and is likely to be relevant and useful to those dealing with community bushfire safety elsewhere in the world.
