Abstract:
The terms “innovation” and “effectuation” are frequently used but not in the same thought. In this order, publications linking innovation to effectuation are presented and discussed through a methodology based on the publish and perish tool. In the last two decades, effectuation has become an active criterion in entrepreneurship research. However, previous studies do not interconnect effectuation to the different innovation approaches. In order to overcome this gap, this paper focuses on studying innovation in an effectual context and linking different innovation approaches to effectual logic. Indeed, effectuation is a way of thinking that serves entrepreneurs in the processes of opportunity identification and new venture creation. Effectuation includes a set of decision-making principles expert entrepreneurs are observed to employ in situations of uncertainty (as defined in Society for Effectual Action). This article outlines the four most-studied innovation approaches from the date of their apparitions until January 2021: frugal innovation, disruptive innovation, lean start-up, and design thinking. In this context, effectuation as the essence of innovation must be clarified as a method that has similarities and differences with frugal and disruptive innovation, lean start-up, and design thinking. To validate the proposed theorical model, a bibliometrics tool, named “Harzing publish” or “perish”, is used. The main finding of this research affirms that the two most linked innovation approaches to effectuation are “lean start-up” and “design thinking”, compared to “frugal innovation” and “disruptive innovation”. In an entrepreneurial innovation context, design thinking and lean start-up are flexible tools that can stimulate and validate the effectual cycle.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine how women’s career stage and Ubuntu (collectivist) values relate to their cognitive ambidexterity when pursuing entrepreneurial initiatives in multicultural South Africa. In this study individual cognitive ambidexterity was operationalised as using effectual and causal logic. More than three hundred businesswomen from diverse backgrounds were surveyed. The results revealed that career stage, self-efficacy and Ubuntu collectivism are important in women’s ambidexterity. Mature, efficacious women in their late career stage draw on their diverse networks and use effectual affordable loss, flexibility and causation when pursuing entrepreneurial initiatives. In contrast, younger, early-career women are more likely to use pre-commitment to ensure support from stakeholders. Women with Ubuntu values use their relationship skills to draw on resources from their networks and use ambidexterity (effectual and causal logic) in their entrepreneurial endeavours. The findings suggest that entrepreneurial women who develop their cognitive ambidexterity and draw on both effectual and causal approaches when initiating entrepreneurial initiatives are more likely to experience successful outcomes. These mental approaches can be developed by means of awareness, training and mentoring. This study extends the literature on women’s entrepreneurial decision-making in a culturally diverse society, demonstrating the influence of cultural values and career stage on effectual and causal logic.

Abstract:
Basing on the principle of causation vs effectuation, we try in this research to undersantand women’s entrepreneurial process and their decision-making logic in the process of entrepreneurial action. Specifically, we seek (1) to understand under what conditions female entrepreneurs mobilize effectual rationality or causal rationality to make decisions and act and (2) to explain the preference for causal or effectual behavior among female entrepreneurs. Research method includes a qualitative approach, through In-depth and semi-structured interviews. Those were conducted with 10 female entrepreneurs, at different stage of their entrepreneurial process, and analyzed through a content analysis. Consistent with existing literature, our results highlight variables that can potentially influence the use of effectual or causal logic: Entrepreneurial expertise and entrepreneurial uncertainty. More interesting this research points out the link between entrepreneurial mo-tivations and the type of decision-making logic used by female entrepreneurs

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study how digital business models evolve when entrepreneurs move to new digital platforms and how this evolution is related to effectuation and causation logics. Design/methodology/approach This study applies a multiple case study approach to investigate how digital business models change in small, Japanese high-tech firms providing their innovations through different digital platforms. To investigate digital business models, this study considers the elements that comprise general business models. The case firms were selected based on size, products and transitions from physical to various digital platforms. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the key decision-makers from the case firms. Findings The findings show that through digital transformation, the case firms’ digital business models evolved by following effectuation logic as well as causal logic. All the firms employed causal logic when moving to new platforms, among other actions. The case firms used effectual logic with success for product development and adjustments to their network. Especially firms providing video games relied on effectuation for high impact products. Effectual logic did not play a role at all in changes to value delivery and had only little impact on revenue structures. Originality/value This research helps understand how digitalization of platforms and subsequent moves to newer digital platforms improve a firm by changing the business model elements through effectuation and causation logics. This research extends the understanding of digital business model transformation to a more granular level, business model elements.

Abstract:
This exploratory study investigates how small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may engage in business development through internal corporate venturing (ICV). We show, based upon three case studies, how ICV in SMEs may be organised in a predominantly improvised manner wherein unforeseen new business opportunities are created in an emergent and iterative trial-and-error process without predetermined goals and without pre-planned strategies. This is a process, we argue, that resembles predominantly effectuation logic. The study contributes to the stream of extant ICV literature by focusing on how SMEs engage in ICV. Moreover, the study contributes to the development of effectuation theory by demonstrating that effectuation logic makes sense, not only in its original venture creation context as suggested by Sarasvathy, but also with regard to how established SMEs infuse more innovative thinking through improvised ICV activities. Findings illustrate that, overall, SMEs act more effectual than causational; and also more than parts of the ICV literature suggest. However, looking at SMEs' ICV activities over several years, it becomes apparent that effectual logics are combined with more causational, pre-planned strategic behaviour.

Abstract:
How do people approach marketing in the face of uncertainty, when the product, the market, and the traditional details involved in market research are unknowable ex ante? The authors use protocol analysis to evaluate how 27 expert entrepreneurs approach such a problem compared with 37 managers with little entrepreneurial expertise (all 64 participants are asked to think aloud as they make marketing decisions in exactly the same unpredictable situation). The hypotheses are drawn from literature in cognitive science on (1) expertise in general and (2) entrepreneurial expertise in particular. The results show significant differences in heuristics used by the two groups. While those without entrepreneurial expertise rely primarily on predictive techniques, expert entrepreneurs tend to invert these. In particular, they use an effectual or nonpredictive logic to tackle uncertain market elements and to coconstruct novel markets with committed stakeholders.

Abstract:
How do citizens respond when provisioning systems are severely changed and curtailed? We apply effectuation theory from the entrepreneurship literature to address a socio-economic issue. We used an online survey and collected data from 1014 citizens in Iran to investigate how an effectual logic of thinking as a psychological framework enables some citizens of a non-Western country to address the uncertainties caused by international economic sanctions and sustain their well-being. We find that optimistic members of society use their effectual logic to enhance their satisfaction with life and social and economic sustainability in the medium-longer run. This study contributes to the multifactorial view of quality of life as well as effectuation theory and enhances our understanding of social sustainability and how it can be cultivated. Implications for policymakers are provided.

Abstract:
This article is about immigrant entrepreneurs and their way through business life in an unfamiliar business world. Focusing on the region of Växjö, Sweden the article presents different attitudes of immigrant entrepreneurs and shows common problems and barriers. The article investigates how immigrant entrepreneurs’ deal with their daily life and what they struggled with in the past. What kind of barriers do immigrants face when they leave their home country? The overall aim is to research what support is needed in order to help regional immigrant entrepreneurs with their business. Therefore this article highlights barriers which immigrant entrepreneurs struggle with. As the regional support programs influence the path of business life the article presents their perspective as well. These supporters have a lot of experience in dealing with immigrant entrepreneurs which can be used to investigate improvements. As the most outstanding result, this article presents the importance of overall integration in the host country. The way through business life for immigrant entrepreneurs is characterized by an effectual logic but the support to entrepreneurs is often based on a causation-logic. Therefore the support givers should consider focusing on the individual entrepreneurs and the surroundings that influence the integration.

Abstract:
Using the Curry-Howard correspondence, programs and proofs are then one. In order not to undermine the logical consistency of the proof assistant, the system is forced to restrict the programs to have no side effects. However, side effects are ubiquitous and essential in programming. Different techniques such as monads or algebraic effects have emerged to model them, thus offering a way to write imperative programs in purely functional languages. It is therefore quite natural that the results of decades of research invested in reasoning about imperative programs try to be adapted to reasoning about programs with effects. In this thesis, we are first interested in the use of separation logic to reason about programs with effects implemented in a proof assistant. We study an approach to describe the behaviour of effects using a predicate transformer. We focus first on freshness, then on packet processing and zero-copy. To study our approach, we rely on two concrete examples which are the SimplExpr module of CompCert and the decoder library Nom. Finally, in order to compile the packet parsers produced to C, we propose a refinement method removing the continuations introduced by the use of a free monad and performing some optimizations

Abstract:
As a topic, organization design is poorly understood. While it is featured in most management textbooks as a chapter dedicated to organizational structures, it is unclear whether organization design is a one-off event or an ongoing process. Thus, it has traditionally been understood to be the same as an organizational configuration, with neat lines of communication and distribution of responsibilities, following pre-set typologies. However, what can be said to constitute organizational structure in this first half of the 21st century? The extraordinary growth of digital communications, the decreasing relevance of hierarchical bureaucracies, and the general demise of command-and-control have all but decimated the traditional notion of organizational structure. In this book it is argued that organization design needs a theoretical revamping. Using a mix of design and social sciences theories and concepts, the new approach is divided into three parts: design logics, design processes, and design leadership. A generic definition of organization design logics is offered, as a set of beliefs shared by managers and entrepreneurs in given sectors of the economy about the way organizations should be designed. Five logics and three types of designing processes are put forward. Logics: (1) the identity logic, (2) the normative logic, (3) the service logic, (4) the logic of effectual reasoning, (5) the logic of interactive structure. Processes: (1) intended design, (2) emergent design, (3) perceived design. For the leadership part, a model of leaderful organization design(ing) is proposed, with the following distinguishing features: (a) practice-based, (b) guided by values of democratic participation, (c) places meaning-making and meaning-taking at the centre of organizational life, (d) driven by design logics, which can be adopted and adapted to suit different internal and external environments.

AbstractIn this chapter, you will learn how to take the first steps of your venture. We argue that problems create opportunities for entrepreneurs, reflect on why nascent entrepreneurs may favor problems over start-up ideas and show why they should be cautious to avoid falling in love with their first idea. Introducing the corridor principle, we advise entrepreneurs to move instead of waiting for a seemingly perfect idea. Therefore, we introduce the principles of effectual logic and encourage entrepreneurs to embrace a proactive mindset. We offer advice for immediate action.

Abstract:
AbstractDeductive verification techniques based on program logics (i.e., the family of Floyd-Hoare logics) are a powerful approach for program reasoning. Recently, there has been a trend of increasing the expressive power of such logics by augmenting their rules with additional information to reason about program side-effects. For example, general program logics have been augmented with cost analyses, logics for probabilistic computations have been augmented with estimate measures, and logics for differential privacy with indistinguishability bounds. In this work, we unify these various approaches via the paradigm of grading, adapted from the world of functional calculi and semantics. We propose Graded Hoare Logic (GHL), a parameterisable framework for augmenting program logics with a preordered monoidal analysis. We develop a semantic framework for modelling GHL such that grading, logical assertions (pre- and post-conditions) and the underlying effectful semantics of an imperative language can be integrated together. Central to our framework is the notion of a graded category which we extend here, introducing graded Freyd categories which provide a semantics that can interpret many examples of augmented program logics from the literature. We leverage coherent fibrations to model the base assertion language, and thus the overall setting is also fibrational.

AbstractIn Rust, programs are often written using iterators, but these pose problems for verification: they are non-deterministic, infinite, and often higher-order, effectful and built using adapters. We present a general framework for specifying and reasoning with Rust iterators in first-order logic. Our approach is capable of addressing the challenges set out above, which we demonstrate by verifying real Rust iterators, including a higher-order, effectful . Using the Creusot verification platform, we evaluate our framework on clients of iterators, showing it leads to efficient verification of complex functional properties.

Abstract:
The service logic has important integrative potential, bringing together not only the economic and commercial concerns of organizational design but also a significant part of its normative considerations. Given that service co-creation implies mutual dependence and reciprocal exchange, the service-centred view of the organization gets drawn directly into the ethical behaviour of the actors involved. Moreover, service integrates also the logic of ‘effectuation’, a concept put forward to explain entrepreneurial action in terms of the processes of creation and development of firms. However, most managers reason in terms of a logic of planning or causation, leading most organizations to be dominated by a traditional, finance-biased mind-set rather than an entrepreneurial one. This chapter highlights that in order to excel at service design, which entails cooperation, networking, and meaning-making, managers should be taught to think primarily as entrepreneurs and only secondarily as financial managers

Abstract:
For the past century or more, we have been taught to think of the design of organizations in terms of a legacy of principles left to us by pioneers such as Taylor, Fayol, and Weber. Names such as Follet, Barnard, or Elton Mayo, although admired and often cited have never made it to the compendia of organization design. So, organizations continue to be designed with a logic of command-and-control, carrot-and-stick, and make-believe ethics which cause the organizational unease often reported in the literature. In this chapter, a proposal for a set of five new human-centred logics of organization design is put forward. The proposal is the result of an investigative process which starts from the realization that a number of contemporary literature trends on management and organization reveal concerns that somehow coincide with human-centred design (HCD) principles and ideas. The new logics are: identity and identification, normative, service, effectual reasoning and interactive structure.

Abstract:
Rapid and frequent load changes bring a number of challenges to the control system of a marine condenser. However, few studies have been published in this area. In this paper, a whole condensing system, which includes condenser, ejector, cooling water pump and its driving turbine, was modeled based on three conservation laws. Propulsion steam turbine was also modeled to simulate the load changes. A proportional integral (PI) controller was developed to regulate the condenser pressure. Opening signal of the governing valve of the propulsion turbine was added to the controller as a feed forward signal, and to improve the performance further, fuzzy algorithm was adopted to tune the gains of PI controller. Numerical experiments were conducted to study the dynamic behavior and the control performance of the condensing system. The simulation results show that employing the valve opening signal of main turbine as feed forward signal and tuning the gains of conventional PI controller by fuzzy logic are both effectual approaches to enhance the control performance. The former is good at reducing maximum overshooting while the latter is good at decreasing settling time. The combination of these two methods can improve the performance of simple PI controller further.
