Abstract In this paper, the gas-liquid two-phase flow in a multistage transonic compressor was numerically simulated based on the Euler-Lagrange method. The influence of wet compression aerodynamic characteristics of the compressor was investigated under different spraying conditions (spraying rates and droplet sizes). The results indicated that the compressor choking boundary moves to a smaller flow rate after spraying. Wet compression improves efficiency of the compressor. The evaporation cooling effect of wet compression decreases total temperature ratio and increases the specific power, re

The present paper examines the effect of water injection at the compressor inlet or between stages, on its operation. A wet compression model coupled with an engine performance model is used. The wet compression model produces the compressor performance map when water is present and consists of a one dimensional stage stacking model, coupled with a droplet evaporation model. The effect of water injection on overall performance and individual stage operation is examined. The map generation procedure is embedded in an engine performance model and a study of water injection effect on overall engi

This study introduces an experimental method that can measure air pressures in the vane segments when a sliding-vane rotary compressor performs suction and compression phases in stable or unstable rotational speeds. When the air pressures of these two phases can be measured, the intake effect of the compressor’s inlet and the seal effect of the vane segments can be evaluated, respectively. Because a frequency converter provides unstable rotational speeds when it controls rotational speeds of a motor with a compressor, an encoder mounted on the output shaft of the motor was applied to record th

Abstract:
The size effect in the structural strength of fiber reinforced composites has been typically analyzed for tensile failures. However, this is not true for the equally important compressive failures, primarily due to the difficulties in conducting compression tests on specimens of multiple sizes. These size effects are analyzed here numerically for two important compressive failure mechanisms in composites, viz. (i) fiber kink bands forming under longitudinal compression (typically accompanied by axial splitting matrix cracks) and (ii) inclined shear cracks forming under transverse compression.

Abstract. The tension-compression asymmetry (TCA, referred to as the strength differential effect, SDE, for annealed materials) of a 1.1-mm-thick 6000-series aluminum alloy sheet, A6116-T4, which is 3-months age hardened is measured using a uniaxial tensile test and an in-plane compression test. It is found that the in-plane compressive flow stress is 1-7 % higher than the uniaxial tensile flow stress; therefore, the material exhibits the SDE. Moreover, a stacked compression test in the normal (through-thickness) direction (ND) of the test sample is also performed to measure the hydrostatic st

A patented active porcelain enamel coating improves both the bond between the concrete and steel reinforcement as well as its corrosion resistance. A Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to develop a commercial method for production of porcelain-coated fibers was developed in 2015. Market potential of this technology with its steel/concrete bond improvements and corrosion protection suggests that it can compete with other fiber reinforcing systems, with improvements in performance, durability, and cost, especially as compared to smooth fibers incorporated into concrete slabs and b

One of the main sources of fouling in pipelines is related to the use of lubrication (and possibly over-lubrication) in reciprocating compressors. In addition to the obvious cost of lubricants, there are also many hidden costs associated with reciprocating compressor lubrication. Some of these hidden costs include disposal of collected oil, gas storage field contamination, scrubber cleaning, and loss of general pipeline efficiency. Minimizing reciprocating gas compressor lubrication oil consumption can address these costs while at the same time reducing the negative environmental impact associ
