Abstract:
One of the main pillars of posthuman and transhuman thought is the use of technology as a means to ameliorate human life by helping overcome the flaws and limitations of the biological body. The effect of such trends has been central to the development of contemporary, third-turn dystopian novels in English, published in the past thirty or so years. However, one important aspect of such narratives is also their list of transgressive characteristics, distancing them from their modern, second-turn counterparts. The following article aims to discuss how transgressive the ideas of dystopia and transhumanism that form Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy are, essentially discussing whatever lies at the core of the human condition.

Abstract:
Abstract In tasks such as lexical decision, people respond differently to morphologically complex words compared to morphologically simple ones (e.g. in English, lies vs. rise). These divergent responses could conceivably arise from differences in activation levels, or alternatively, from the additional steps required to decompose complex words. To investigate this issue, we used the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) false memory paradigm, which probes activation of lexical representations by measuring the probability of recalling or recognizing a word (such as lies) after listening to a list of its phonological neighbors (such as wise, lose, lime, etc.). Our results showed a significant false memory effect for complex words, which demonstrates that similar-sounding words can activate representations for stem-plus-affix combinations. Our results also showed no significant difference between false memory rates for complex versus simple words, which suggests that complex stem-plus-affix representations activate at levels equivalent to those of simple stem representations. These findings indicate that differences in activation level probably do not lie at the source of divergent responses to complex and simple words, and that decomposition is the more likely origin.

Ce travail de thèse a pour objectif principal l'étude des propriétés de photo-commutation dans le visible et l'infrarouge de composés moléculaires à transition de spin. Les systèmes étudiés ont la particularité de présenter plusieurs états métastables à basse température : "Composés à transition de spin multi-métastables". L'enjeu actuel de tels systèmes ainsi que les processus de photo-commutation est de taille dans le domaine de l'adressage optique de l'information. Afin d'effectuer cette étude, nous avons choisi cinq composés chimiquement distincts : un mononucléaire, [Fe(ptz)6](BF4)2 (ptz = 1-propyltetrazole), pour lequel on a mis en évidence le découplage entre la transition cristallographique et la transition de spin photo-induite et quatre binucléaires de la famille {[Fe(L)(NCX)2]2bpym} (X = S ou Se; L = bpym (2,2'-bipyrimidine) ou bt (2,2'-bithiazoline)), où nous avons pu montrer entre autre qu'il est possible de convertir l'état fondamental bas spin de façon sélective en deux états macroscopiques distincts en fonction de la longueur d'onde de l'éclairement utilisé (visible ou infrarouge)
The aim of the present work was to develop a detailed picture of the photo-excitation process in some special spin crossover complexes, which exhibit more than one long-lived metastable states. We are interested in the effects of visible and infrared light irradiation on these systems. Such “multi-metastable spin crossover complexes” display actually an interesting and largely unexplored photophysics and hold also some promises as future candidates for storing and transferring information in molecular devices. In order to explore this topic, we have chosen five different systems: the mononuclear [Fe(ptz)6](BF4)2 complex (ptz = 1-propyleterazole) for which we demonstrate a clear decoupling between the crystallographic phase transition and the light-induced spin conversion and four binuclear complexes of the family {[Fe(L)(NCX)2]2bpym} (X = S or Se; L = bpym (2,2'-bipyrimidine) or bt (2,2'-bithiazoline)). This last study led to a number of original results, revealing for example wavelength-selective photomagnetic phenomena in these systems

Les complexes à transition de spin sont des molécules qui peuvent être commutées entre deux états, l'un diamagnétique et l'autre paramagnétique. Cette commutation peut s'effectuer, entre autre, à l'aide d'une excitation lumineuse, ouvrant la voie vers un possible stockage de l'information au niveau d'une molécule unique. Toutefois, l'information photo-inscrite n'est stable qu'au-dessous d'une certaine température appelée T(LIESST). L'objectif principal de cette thèse a constitué en des modifications chimiques (modification du ligand organique, désolvatation, modifications d'anion,...) d'un complexe macrocyclique de Fe(II) qui présente à l'heure actuelle l'un des T(LIESST) les plus élevés (134 K), et ce afin d'augmenter encore cette valeur. Parmi les divers résultats expérimentaux, un T(LIESST) de 160 K a été obtenu.

Sous l'action d'une perturbation extérieure (température, pression, irradiation lumineuse, champ magnétique), les matériaux à transition de spin (TS) du Fe(II) présentent un état diamagnétique (S = 0) et/ou paramagnétique (S = 2). Cette commutation optique ouvre de réelles perspectives dans le domaine de l'affichage et du stockage d'information. A l'issu d'un travail préliminaire sur les différents processus photomagnétiques rencontrés dans les composés à transition de spin du Fe(II), l'étude a été focalisée sur l'effet LIESST (Light-Induced Excited Spin State Trapping). Une nouvelle procédure, notée Tc(LIESST), a été introduite afin de caractériser un grand nombre de matériaux. A partir de cette base de données, l'influence de différents paramètres sur la relaxation HS -> BS a été discutée. De nouveaux dérivés phosphorés à TS thermique et optique ont notamment été décrits.

Les potentiels spontanes mesures dans la partie superieure de la croute terrestre ont souvent pour origine les phenomenes electrocinetiques. Nous avons etudie les signaux electriques lies aux circulations de fluides pour mieux comprendre les observations in situ et pour proposer des configurations optimales de mesure pour detecter ces circulations de fluides. Nous avons mesure, a l'aide d'une enceinte triaxiale permettant la circulation de fluide, la resistivite electrique, la permeabilite, et le potentiel d'electrofiltration, dans des sediments soumis a une deformation. La resistivite electrique et le potentiel d'electrofiltration sont des parametres marqueurs de la fissuration. Le coefficient de couplage electrocinetique varie fortement avec la permeabilite jusqu'a plusieurs volts par bar sur des echantillons de gres et de calcaire. Cet effet a ete interprete par la conductivite de surface, a l'aide d'un modele de milieu capillaire. Un potentiel electrique de 30 mv pourra etre mesure entre deux electrodes situees dans une formation geologique, le long d'une circulation de fluide creee par une difference de pression aussi faible que 50 mbar. La dependance du potentiel d'electrofiltration avec la permeabilite a aussi ete verifiee sur de l'argile dont la permeabilite a augmente de presque 2 ordres de grandeur pendant une deformation de 1,7%. Nous avons propose les configurations les plus appropriees pour detecter les variations de circulation de fluides dans les prismes d'accretion par mesures electriques et magnetiques

La protection large bande contre les agressions laser dans la region spectrale du visible (450 nm - 650 nm) requiert des materiaux capables de limiter le flux optique entrant dans un systeme optique ; dans ce cadre, les materiaux organiques presentant une forte absorption non lineaire se sont reveles etre des candidats prometteurs. En regime nanoseconde, l'absorption non lineaire correspond a un processus a deux etapes : une absorption instantanee de deux photons (adp) suivie par une absorption a partir de l'etat excite se produisant pendant la duree de l'impulsion. Dans ce contexte, notre travail a pour objectif l'exaltation de l'absorption non lineaire par l'optimisation (i) des proprietes d'adp et (ii) des effets d'absorption a partir de l'etat s 1 induits par adp. (i) la strategie fondee sur l'augmentation du transfert s'est revelee certes efficace, mais conduit a des molecules plus colorees. Devant les limites de cette methode pour les applications dans le visible, nous avons developpe une approche oligomere fondee sur l'exploitation des effets d'interactions dans le modele excitonique. Des calculs semi-empiriques ont permis de predire une exaltation significative de la section efficace d'adp avec le nombre d'unites. Pour mettre en uvre au plan experimental cette approche, nous avons mis au point une strategie de synthese d'oligofluorenes de type monodisperse dont l'etude est en cours. (ii) l'application de la strategie fondee sur l'optimisation des proprietes liees a l'etat excite par la reduction des processus de relaxation a egalement conduit dans le cas de triarylamines substituees a une exaltation des proprietes d'absorption non lineaire. Ce travail, qui a permis d'obtenir des composes particulierement efficaces pour la limitation optique en regime nanoseconde dans le visible, ouvre de nouvelles perspectives pour d'autres applications necessitant des materiaux avec de grandes sections efficaces d'adp comme la photopolymerisation ou l'imagerie biomedicale.

Several parametric and nonparametric methods have been proposed to deal with stratified C-sample problems where the main interest lies in evaluating the presence of a certain treatment effect, but the strata effects cannot be overlooked. Stratified scenarios can be found in several different fields. In this paper we focus on a particular case study from the field of education, addressing a typical stochastic ordering problem in the presence of stratification. We are interested in assessing how the performance of students from different degree programs at the University of Padova change, in terms of university credits and grades, when compared with their entry test results. To address this problem, we propose an extension of the Non-Parametric Combination (NPC) methodology, a permutation-based technique (see Pesarin and Salmaso, 2010), as a valuable tool to improve the data analytics for monitoring University students’ careers at the School of Engineering of the University of Padova. This new procedure indeed allows us to assess the efficacy of the University of Padova’s entry tests in evaluating and selecting future students.

AbstractThe South African Lowveld is a region of land that lies between 150 and 2000 m above sea level. In summer the region is characterized by the maximum mean daily ambient temperature of 32 °C. The purpose of the study was to characterize indoor thermal environments in low-cost residential dwellings during summer seasons as climate is changing. Indoor and ambient air temperature measurements were performed at a 30-min temporal resolution using Thermochron iButtons in the settlement of Agincourt. 58 free running low-cost residential dwellings were sampled over the summer seasons of 2016 and 2017. Complementary ambient air temperature data were sourced from the South African Weather Service (SAWS). Data were transformed into hourly means for further analysis. It was found that hourly maximum mean indoor temperatures ranged between 27 °C (daytime) and 23 °C (nighttime) for both living rooms and bedrooms in summer 2016 while in 2017, maximum mean indoor temperatures ranged between 29 °C (daytime) and 26 °C (nighttime) in living rooms and bedrooms. Pearson correlations showed a positive association between indoor and ambient temperatures ranging between r = 0.40 (daytime) and r = 0.90 (nighttime). The association is weak to moderate during daytime because occupants apply other ventilation practices that reduce the relationship between indoor and ambient temperatures. The close association between nighttime ambient and indoor temperature can also be attributed to the effect of urban heat island as nighttime ambient temperature remain elevated; thus, influencing indoor temperatures also remain high. These findings highlight the potential threat posed by a rise in temperatures for low-cost residential dwellings occupants due to climate change. Furthermore, the high level of sensitiveness of dwellings to ambient temperature changes also indicates housing envelopes that have poor thermal resistance to withstand the Lowveld region’s harsh extreme heat conditions, especially during summer. The study findings suggest that a potential risk of indoor overheating exists in low-cost dwellings on the South African Lowveld as the frequency and intensity of heat waves rise. There is therefore a need to develop immediate housing adaptation interventions that mitigate against the projected ambient temperature rise for example through thermal insulation retrofits on the existing housing stock and passive housing designs for new housing stock.

Surface plasmons (SPs) are collective excitations of free electrons in a conducting medium bounded by a surface or interface with a dielectric. They can originate surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs), which are evanescent waves involving electron density oscillations and the associated electromagnetic (EM) field whose amplitude decays exponentially with distance from the surface. SPPs are characterised by a dispersion curve (frequency vs wavevector along the interface) that lies outside of the light cone, so they cannot be excited directly by propagating light; however, it is possible to excite them using the Attenuated Total internal Reflection (ATR) method or a periodic grating. SPs in a confined geometry such as a metallic sphere are localised in space and characterised by discrete frequencies (a single one in the case of sphere, two or three in the case of an ellipsoid). They can be excited directly by propagating light if its frequency coincides with the localised SP frequency, giving rise to the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR). Both SPPs and LSPR are highly sensitive to the dielectric constant of the surrounding media and can be used for environment sensing (e.g. gas molecules that adsorb onto the structure’s surface).

Safety Lifecycle is described in IEC61508 and IEC61511, but more detailed engineering procedure than IEC61508 and IEC61511 is required for real design and manufacture of safety system for offshore project. For the turret national research project, more detailed design procedure was applied for the design of turret. First of all, the nodes are defined based on EUC (Equipment Under Control) units and the hazards are analysed by 3 methodologies — Hazard Checklist, HAZOP and FMEA during hazard analysis phase. Then the risk are analysed quantitatively by LOPA methodology. To produce the safety requirement specification for function, the cause & effect, the logic diagram and IO list will be produced. The isolation countermeasures in case of explosion and fire and the SIFs (Safety Instrumented Function) in LOPA report and the process shutdown interlocks will be included in the cause & effect and the logic diagram will be developed based on this cause & effect. The safety requirement specification for safety will be developed by exSILentia from exida. Based on the safety requirement specification, the Functional Design Specification, the Safety Validation Plan including the test specification and test plan, the system configuration will be developed during the Basic Design phase and then IO list & terminal allocation, application software implementation, panel drawing will be developed during the detailed design.

Review question / Objective: To examine if there is a difference in the effect of stretching training on flexibility during childhood (6-11 years of age) and adolescence (12-18 years of age). Condition being studied: We are going to examine whether there is a greater response to stretching training (i.e. ‘window of opportunity’) during childhood, compared with adolescence. Information sources: Two review team members will independently screen the titles and abstracts of the retrieved publications to select the eligible publications. Use of the digital technologies is new and very productive approach for balance of different data. It is very important for balance of supply and demand and for increase of competitiveness of products. Various types of digital models were developed as a result of scientific research, they found reflection in article. Digital models for the description of the list of the sequences of steps and operations of various stages and process in general allow to install system of interrelations between operations and steps and to reach necessary log-ic, increase of effectiveness of any process. Object-relational models for establishment of communications between data of various blocks of databases and functional models of the choice of strategy of data balance form analytical base for justification of the choice of the direction of transformation of data. Models of a combination of a plurality of various data of the offer of products in the form of matrixes of multi-purpose optimization have double effect, because they allow not only to develop various options of data combina-tion, taking into account opportunities of change of location of products over the markets and temporary phases, but also to estimate aggregate useful effect from products. These models together with models of comparison of various options and the choice of optimal solutions allow to generate compatible strategic and current programs of the offer of products as a plurality of the output data balanced with each other and with data of demand. It is providing the best synergetic result. The developed methodology of creation of system of the interconnected digital models for transformation of data and generation of the output data of the situational-strategic program of the offer of products is a cornerstone of formation of new digital econ-omy – of economy of balanced data.

Ours is an age of pervasive political turbulence, and the scale of the challenge requires new thinking on politics as well as public ethics for our world. In Western countries, the specter of Islamophobia, alt-right populism, along with racialized violence has shaken public confidence in long-secure assumptions rooted in democracy, diversity, and citizenship. The tragic denouement of so many of the Arab uprisings together with the ascendance of apocalyptic extremists like Daesh and Boko Haram have caused an even greater sense of alarm in large parts of the Muslim-majority world. It is against this backdrop that M.A. Muqtedar Khan has written a book of breathtaking range and ethical beauty. The author explores the history and sociology of the Muslim world, both classic and contemporary. He does so, however, not merely to chronicle the phases of its development, but to explore just why the message of compassion, mercy, and ethical beauty so prominent in the Quran and Sunna of the Prophet came over time to be displaced by a narrow legalism that emphasized jurisprudence, punishment, and social control. In the modern era, Western Orientalists and Islamists alike have pushed the juridification and interpretive reification of Islamic ethical traditions even further. Each group has asserted that the essence of Islam lies in jurisprudence (fiqh), and both have tended to imagine this legal heritage on the model of Western positive law, according to which law is authorized, codified, and enforced by a leviathan state. “Reification of Shariah and equating of Islam and Shariah has a rather emaciating effect on Islam,” Khan rightly argues. It leads its proponents to overlook “the depth and heights of Islamic faith, mysticism, philosophy or even emotions such as divine love (Muhabba)” (13). As the sociologist of Islamic law, Sami Zubaida, has similarly observed, in all these developments one sees evidence, not of a traditionalist reassertion of Muslim values, but a “triumph of Western models” of religion and state (Zubaida 2003:135). To counteract these impoverishing trends, Khan presents a far-reaching analysis that “seeks to move away from the now failed vision of Islamic states without demanding radical secularization” (2). He does so by positioning himself squarely within the ethical and mystical legacy of the Qur’an and traditions of the Prophet. As the book’s title makes clear, the key to this effort of religious recovery is “the cosmology of Ihsan and the worldview of Al-Tasawwuf, the science of Islamic mysticism” (1-2). For Islamist activists whose models of Islam have more to do with contemporary identity politics than a deep reading of Islamic traditions, Khan’s foregrounding of Ihsan may seem unfamiliar or baffling. But one of the many achievements of this book is the skill with which it plumbs the depth of scripture, classical commentaries, and tasawwuf practices to recover and confirm the ethic that lies at their heart. “The Quran promises that God is with those who do beautiful things,” the author reminds us (Khan 2019:1). The concept of Ihsan appears 191 times in 175 verses in the Quran (110). The concept is given its richest elaboration, Khan explains, in the famous hadith of the Angel Gabriel. This tradition recounts that when Gabriel appeared before the Prophet he asked, “What is Ihsan?” Both Gabriel’s question and the Prophet’s response make clear that Ihsan is an ideal at the center of the Qur’an and Sunna of the Prophet, and that it enjoins “perfection, goodness, to better, to do beautiful things and to do righteous deeds” (3). It is this cosmological ethic that Khan argues must be restored and implemented “to develop a political philosophy … that emphasizes love over law” (2). In its expansive exploration of Islamic ethics and civilization, Khan’s Islam and Good Governance will remind some readers of the late Shahab Ahmed’s remarkable book, What is Islam? The Importance of Being Islamic (Ahmed 2016). Both are works of impressive range and spiritual depth. But whereas Ahmed stood in the humanities wing of Islamic studies, Khan is an intellectual polymath who moves easily across the Islamic sciences, social theory, and comparative politics. He brings the full weight of his effort to conclusion with policy recommendations for how “to combine Sufism with political theory” (6), and to do so in a way that recommends specific “Islamic principles that encourage good governance, and politics in pursuit of goodness” (8).
