Full textThe plastic flow of a polycrystal is analyzed assuming grains as fine that the rate limiting process is grain boundary sliding, and grains readily accommodate their shapes by slip to preserve spatial continuity. It is shown that thinking of a polycrystal with randomly oriented grains as an homogeneous and isotropic continuum may lead to gross errors when dealing with it as a dynamical medium, even in a scale much larger than the gain size. The polyhedral nature of grains influences the plastic flow in a radical manner, as the relative velocity of adjacent grains is constrained to the common boundary plane, and only the in-plane shear stress contributes to their relative motion. Together with the existence of a finite critical shear for sliding, this constriction necessarily involves grain volume variations, which can only be elastic. As this has a limit, fracture follows as a necessary step of plastic flow. A theoretical approach to plastic flow is developed, and emphasis is done in superplastic deformation, from zero to fracture strain. The theory allows to quantitatively explain the observed features of superplastic materials and responds to many open questions in the field. A novel physical explanation for diffusion bonding is essayed, which yields closed-form equations relating the bonding progress with time, temperature, applied pressure and the constants characterizing the material. Excellent quantitative agreement with experiment is attained with no adjustable parameter. In the novel scheme, diffusion bonding is caused by the interpenetration of the two surfaces at the grain level. The process is driven by the strong tensile stress field induced in the plane of the interface by the plastic collapse of the initial surface irregularities

Full textFor the application as a thermal barrier coating (TBC), the partially stabilized zirconia approaches some limits of performance which hardly can be overcome in the near future. Considerable effort is being invested, therefore, in identifying new materials with better performance than the current industry standard. Intuitive arguments based on crystallography and simulation may lead most rapidly to the development of new TBC materials. In this work, we have studied the physical properties of some ceramics that can be used in TBC system, such as : perovskite and pyrochlore compounds, zirconia and hafnia as well as zircon. The full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FPLAPW) method is used to investigated the structural and electronic properties, giving more insight on the mechanical behaviour of these materials. The quasi-harmonic Debye model is applied to determine the thermal properties such as temperature dependence of bulk modulus, thermal expansion coefficient, specific heats at constant volume and pressure. Our results show mainly that lanthanum pyrohafnate is the best candidate for application as TBC

Full textThermal comfort is an integrated cognitive process that relies on thermal sensitivity. Aging is associated with progressive decrease in thermal perception but previous studies provide no consistent results as to age effects on thermal comfort. The aim of this work was to confirm age-associated decline in thermal sensitivity by exploring dynamic aspects of thermal sensations, and to determine whether this decline influences thermal comfort in the elderly. To investigate dynamic aspects of thermal sensations in the elderly, we compared adaptation times to local thermal stimuli and the consequent brain potentials in groups of young and elderly subjects. Our results showed increased adaptation times to warm stimuli in the elderly and lower amplitude of cortical responses to thermal stimulation of the C-fibres when old subjects were exposed to slightly warm vs. Thermoneutral environment. Those results were interpreted in terms of functional impairment of C-type afferents. Furthermore, we studied age effects on thermal comfort by comparing scores on visual analogues scales in groups of young and elderly subjects when exposed to thermal stress induced by cold and warmth. Our resulted showed that, both in warm and cold environments, lower thermal stress is related to age as revealed by decreased scores of perceived thermal sensation and thermal discomfort in the elderly compared to young subjects. Functional impairment of neural fibres transmitting thermal afferent signals is thought to be underlying age-related differences in expression of thermal comfort

Full textThis work aims at the physical and the numerical modelling of air motion and heat transport phenomena in subway stations. The study is based on an approach described by the unsteady three-dimensional Euler's equations completed by source terms. These equations are discretized with a finite volume method and solved by a SIMPLE algorithm coupled with a scheme as proposed by Van Leer. The spatial discretization is made by a cartesian grid. In order to take the relative motions of the coaches inside the station into account, a sliding grid method is implemented. To validate the model, calculations are compared to measurements of the flow generated by mixed convection in a rectangular open duct equipped with an heated plate in its central part. The study ends by some applications of the numerical code in the case of a typical Parisian subway station

Full textThe aim of this work is to design, study, understand and optimize a high-repetition-rate (7 to 10 kHz) solid-state laser, with at the same time high power (500 W) and good beam quality (M²<10), used in an extreme-UV source ( at 13,5 nm) for nanolithography. In this kind of lasers, high pumping power leads to thermal effects which lower the performances (efficiency, beam quality) of the laser. It is to say, mainly, an aberrant thermal lensing effect influencing the stability of the resonator. In this work, thermal focal length and spherical aberration are precisely quantified, experimentally and then theoretically. Both studies show a very good match and allow to show the importance of the pumping profile, and of the dependence with temperature of thermal conductivity and dn/dT of the laser crystal in the amplitude of these effects. It is also proven that the position of the laser rod inside the cavity has a significant influence. The consequences of the thermal lens and the spherical aberration are also studied, with simple calculations and simulations with the software Commod Pro. Thanks to these methods, energetic performances of the laser can be predicted with good precision, as well as the M² of the beam, but only in the case of a non aberrating rod. Eventually, thanks to these preliminary studies, compensating devices can be designed, made of phase-plate or a combination of simple lenses and put inside the cavity. Theses devices are very efficient on cavity with a low M², and thanks to them, sources with high brightness can be obtained

Full textThis work presents an experimental and numerical investigation of the thermal effects occurring during the charge of adsorbent fixed bed tank. The influence ofthese thermal effects, which result from the exothermal character of the adsorption pro cess and the pressure forces work, on the storage capacity is specially analysed. An experimental setup allOwing the dynamic measurements of the temperature and pressure profiles has been used. Then the numerical protocol with the Fluent software, has been validated by comparison of the simulated pressure, flow rate and. Temperature fields in the tank with the results obtained from an experimental investigation carried out the dynamic storage. Several predictive simulations have been carried out in order to study the effect of the boundary conditions, as the wall temperature or effective thermal conductivity of the porous bed, on the storage capacity of the reservoir. We searched the optimal geometry of an interbed thermal dissipater for a given industrial tank. To do this we made vary the H/L ratio, which represents the ratio of the height of an elementary stage and the totallength of the tank. We could determine an optimal geometry which corresponds to the value 1/3 of the ratio H/L. From this optimum we studied the effect offive additional cooling tubes on the tank storage capacity. The stored mass is 15 % higher than that obtained without these tubes

Full textToday we are witnessing an evolution of mobile electronic systems to more advanced features. The complexity of mobile electronic systems requires an increase in computing power of electronic chips, which can lead to the use of aggressive CMOS technology, but which now completed with a technique called 3D integration. It is more of a classical evolution across the transistor following Moore's law but that of the wider scale of the packaging / system, it is called the law of "More than Moore". Three dimensional (3D) stack of electronic chip generates an increase in the density of total power dissipated per unit area of the final stack. This power, essentially resulting in the Joule effect transistors and interconnection, is a source of heat which contributes to increase the overall temperature of the chip. The global objective of this thesis is to study the heat transfer in a 3D stack of chips during operation. We will seek to understand the geometric or materials effects of the stack and the impact of the placement of TSV, Bumps ... on these heat exchanges. The study is based on numerical simulations validated by experimental measurements on 3D stacks. These numerical and experimental studies have as a goal to deduce thermal design rules that will be validated in the drawing of basic or more complex circuits. In the following, these goals will be motivated and discussed in detail. The establishment of a thermal model based on finite element simulations of an industrial process 3D CMOS 65 nm will address the problem of modelling the most accurate way possible. Indeed, previous simulations used compact models - so that the lower accuracy of finite elements - and a generic method that does not reflect all of the properties of materials, and in particular interfaces. The results obtained will be validated by measurements on stacked chips carried out within the process concerned. In the experimental part, the objective is to determine a thermal mapping in a 3D stack using sensors embedded in the silicon, and under different conditions of 3D chip process. This will provide a numerical model validated and calibrated by experimental measurements

Full textThe studies presented in this thesis underline the real potential of femtosecond lasers for micromachining applications and insist on the control and use of the amplified laser chains. The experimental devices for the control of micromachining require the control of many parameters, as mechanical, data-processing or optical. Various techniques of machining were worked out to increase the quality of machining and drilling and systematic studies were undertaken in the case of metals including fluence and repetition rate dependence. A comparison of the heating effects on the edges of holes drilled in femtosecond and nanosecond regime was performed with an experimental approach (TTM measurements) and with a modelization. This was based on the use of a 2 temperatures model. Finally complementary results, in particular on silicon micromachining and tests of wave guide photowritting illustrate the wide applicability field of the ultra-short laser pulses

Full textThe aim of this work was to study the interactions between microwaves, applied under conditions slightly thermal (37, 50 and 60ʿC) to the frequency of 2,45 GHz with the bacteria Escherichia coli, and to study the possibility to use this technique for decontamination of thermosensitive products. Various protocols and various exposure conditions were tested, and the carried out investigations showed that the microwaves applied in discontinuous mode under conditions slightly thermal induce membrane integrity modification of the bacteria E coli. This work shows the need for combining experimental dosimetry and numerical dosimetry for the interactions between the biological systems and microwaves studies, since the results of the thermal characterization of the suspension seemed to allot the effects obtained for a non thermal effect of microwaves, whereas the numerical simulation allowed us to detect the presence of "hot spots" within the exposed bacterial suspension. For process, this work shows that the use of the discontinuous microwaves under conditions slightly thermal does not seem possible as such, although exposure times used are shorter than those used in traditional heating process

Full textThrough numerical and experimental approaches, this work concerns the process of microwave pasteurization in a food matrix, to understand its mechanisms for future improvement. In seeking to highlight the existence of non-thermal effects, three approaches have been proposed: (i) comparison of conventional heating / microwave by imposing similar thermal histories; (ii) comparison between pulsed or continuously modulated microwave energy input on microbial inactivation and (iii) demonstration of the influence of electric field amplitude during sublethal temperature treatment. Two three-dimensional multiphysics models, solved by finite elements, are proposed to simulate pasteurization in a water bath and by microwave. The inactivation kinetics parameters are estimated numerically under dynamic temperature conditions. These models are able to predict temperature heterogeneity and therefore microbial inactivation within a product. The agreement between simulations and experiments is satisfactory. Results indicated that no non-thermal effects of microwaves on the inactivation of E. coli could be detected. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the interest of numerical simulation as a tool for understanding the microwave pasteurization process, and also to improve its design and control

Full textThis thesis is a study of new ytterbium-doped crystals, made for the development of efficient (and sometimes broadly tunable) lasers emitting around 1 J. Ull. The first part presents the laser performance, under high power diode pumping, of new crystals: Yb:GGG, Yb:GdCOB, Yb:BOYS (and Yb:CaBOYS), Yb:SYS and Yb:YSO. The efficiency, tunability and thermal behaviour of these materials is discussed, and illustrated (when possible) by a comparison between materials of similar properties. Thennal effects limit the scaling toward higher powers in most of these materials: a comprehensive study of the se effects is performed in the second part of this thesis. We begin this part by setting the theoretical background necessary to understand thermal and thermomechanical effects in solid state lasers. After a description of the classical techniques employed to investigate thermal effects, we describe the experimental setup we used. It is based on a commercially available Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor, and enables the measurement of the thermallens (including its aberrations) in end-pumped laser, under lasing and nonlasing conditions. We emphasize on the characteristics and limitations of this technique. Thermal lensing measurements are then reported, for the first time, in ytterbium-doped materials. Significant nonradiative effects have been demonstrated, whereas it is generally admitted that such effects are purely absent. We then explain how, thanks to a simple anâlytical model, it is possible to derive the quantum efficiency and the thermo- optical coefficient from these measurements. We also demonstrated the influence of the lasing wavelength on the thermalload, the reduction of thermal effects by the use of composite crystals, as weIl as the major role played by the photoelastic effect in the thermally-induced lens in Yb:GdCOB

Full textThis PHD work is aiming at the development of a pump source for the nanosecond OPCPA of the 10 PW laser Apollon.First, we present the characteristics of the multipetawatt systems and the interest of OPCPA architecture for this type of systems. After detailing its characteristics, we then justify the choice of Yb:CaF2 as active media for the development of the nanosecond OPCPA pump source. We finally end the first chapter by the preliminary design of the pump source which is adapted to the specificities of the Yb:CaF2 crystal. The second chapter begins by the study of thermal lenses and thermal induced depolarization under high-power pumping in function of polarization or crystal orientation. The results allow us to validate the choice of [111] orientation for active media in the frame of high power laser systems. We then focus on ceramics because their mechanical isotropy appears to be interesting for high power systems. We study the ceramics made by wet route synthesis and highlight a strong heating, restricting their utilization. Several hypothesis are then investigated to explain this effect. In the last chapter we finished the design of the pump source with simulations of absorption, gain and energy extraction. We finally detailed the experimental results for two different architectures (regenerative and multipass), using Yb:CaF2 crystals in active mirror configuration

Full textThe influence of thermal effects and solid deformations on the performance of hydrodynamic fixed geometry thrust bearings is analyzed. Previous studies on fixed geometry hydrodynamic thrust bearings combining thermal effects and deformations are scarce. After the presentation of the theory of thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication, we describe the methods of deformation calculations. The thermoelastohydrodynamic (TEHD) study, which takes into account the local thermal effects and the solid deformations, is carried out on an eight pad fixed geometry hydrodynamic thrust bearing. The hydrodynamic pressure and temperature fields are obtained by the mean of the finite difference method and the pad and collar displacement fields are computed using the finite element method. We also take into account the runner deformations in order to solve the TEHD problem. The influence of the operating conditions (applied load and rotation speed) on the various characteristics of the thrust bearing is also analyzed. We showed that mechanical deformations of the runner were found very significant for an accurate prediction of the performance of the thrust bearing

Full textThis thesis takes place in a research project on semi-solid forming of steel, begins in 1998 at ENSAM of Metz with the industrial partner ASCOMETAL CREAS. The aims of these works are to characterise, model, and simulate the semi-solid steel behaviour. During this thesis, several experiments were performed to analyse the influence of some parameters on the behaviour. Three rheological tests were used: compression test, axial filling and radial filling. Thermal effects are first order parameters. These experimental results, coupling with numerical simulations, are analysed to understand the influence of thermal exchanges on the microstructure, particularly on the liquid fraction, and the impact on the global behaviour of the semi-solid slug. This analyse focused on the forming phase but the slug transfer from the heating device to active tools is also took into account. Moreover, the influence of strain rate and steel grade are also studied. With these results, the micromacro modelling of semi-solid materials behaviour in steady-state, purposed by the LPMM during Rouff thesis, is developed. The principal internal variable was modified to introduce the thermal effects and considered a continuous evolution of microstructure instead of an instantaneous one. This model was finally implemented in the finite element software Forge2©, and the first predictive simulations are presented. In addition, this thesis proposes many perspectives, for university research or steel thixoforging industrialisation
