Full textFire is a major disturbance within Mediterranean ecosystems, but its consequences on land snail communities and their subsequent recolonisation patterns are little studied. The aims of the present study are: (1) to define the short-; middle- and long-term impact of fire on land snail communities, (2) to analyse the consequences of successive fires during a short period of time on malacofaunas, and (3) to reveal the patterns of post-fire recolonisation within these communities. Land snail communities are highly resilient. Although fire induces a drastic reduction of their abundance, species richness is little affected and all the ecological groups are represented within the first post-fire year. Malacofaunas do not show patterns of post-fire succession. In fact, recolonisation patterns are complex and depend on diffuse refuges, located within burned areas and which are due to varying fire severity, but also on the biogeography and history of the sampling sites

Full textRockfalls are a major natural hazard in the French Alps due to their high probability of spatial and temporal occurrence. Forests constitute an efficient nature-based solution to mitigate this hazard while protecting human lives and assets. However, this ecosystem service may be disrupted by others natural hazards such as wildfires likely to be more frequent and intense in the current and future context of climate changes. This PhD thesis proposes to assess the effects of fires on the protection capability of forests against rockfalls in the French Alps.A methodology to evaluate the protection capability of a forest against rockfalls is first developed. It consists in modeling rockfalls propagations on 3886 forest plots taken in the French Alps to calculate three quantitative indicators that assess the reduction of the frequency (BARI), the intensity (MIRI) and the overall reduction (ORPI) of rockfalls due to the presence of a forest. These indicators are used to identify the predominant forest variables for assessing the protective effect: the length of forest along the slope, the basal area and the mean diameter. Forest stands with a heterogeneous distribution of diameters and made up of several tree species generally offer a better protection than monospecific and regular stands, thus underlining the influence of forest diversity. This work shows that coppices have the highest protection capabilities, followed by hight stands dominated by deciduous species and mixed stands; coniferous stands coming last.Spatio-temporal trends in fire weather in the French Alps are investigated over the period 1959-2015 and reveal a major contrast between Southern Alps which experienced a strong increase (in intensity, frequency, duration and seasonality) especially at high elevation, and Northern Alps, where a slight increase at low elevation and no significant trends at high elevation are observed. These results are then used to define three types of fires (winter, summer, and dry summer) for which post-fire tree mortality is studied at the tree and forest stands levels. These analyses show that only summer fires are likely to significantly affect the forest ecosystems, particularly at low elevations where deciduous stands (especially coppice) dominate. The effect of fires on the protection capabilities of forests is assessed by comparing rockfalls propagation simulations without fire to simulations after each type of fire in which the trees with a high post-fire mortality are not taken into account. The ORPI values for each forest plot and fire type are thus calculated and compared to the reference scenario without fire thus making it possible to quantitatively assess the reduction of the protection capabilities. Low elevation stands, subject to warmer and drier climatic conditions, show reductions of the protective effect in the range 60-100%. It mainly concerns coppices and deciduous stands. At high elevation, the reduction is in the range 30- 65%.In conclusion, this PhD thesis proposes an original method to quantify the protection capabilities of a forest against rockfalls before and after a fire and improve the knowledge of these two natural hazards and their associated risks. The multi-hazard analysis conducted at the end of the thesis makes it possible to understand the potential cascading effects in the main forest types and for four bioclimatically homogeneous territories of the French Alps

Full textThe water mist is first characterized without flame : measurements of droplets diameters, droplets density and mass flow rate are performed. Then, the temperature field within the flame is established, without and then with water mist. Absorption fields and diffusion coefficients for two wavelengths are also determined in order to determine the relative contribution of absorption and diffusion processes. The knowledge of these experimental fields allows for the calculation of radiative flux towards the fuel surface with a Discrete Ordinates Method algorithm. Computed radiative flux values are compared with experimental values. Tomographic images of the mist-flame interaction flow are obtained. A PIV treatment of these images allows for the determination of droplets speed fields in order to get a better understanding of the dynamic interaction between the droplets and the flame. The study also shows that the introduction of steam within the flame has a chemical effect

Full textWildfires impacting French forests are currently concentrated in the South, especially in the Mediterranean and Aquitaine regions. Climate projections for the 21st century in France question the impact of climate change on wildfire hazard. We focus on two particular issues: the evolution of the fire danger and fire regime in regions already facing frequent wildfires today, and the potential extension of the risk to new regions in the future.Climate change effect was first determined using projections of an empirical fire danger index (FWI) under future climate, computed for five contrasted climatic models under two greenhouse gases emission scenarios. These projections highlight a very strong increase in fire danger levels in the areas already facing wildfires, especially in the Mediterranean, with a very good agreement between climate models. The range of the increase in the North and the West, though existing, is more challenging to quantify, because of climate model uncertainties. This first approach was limited by the ability of FWI to represent fire activity. Therefore, we developed a probabilistic model for fire activity, aiming at projecting fire numbers and burnt areas under future climate. The approach considers that fires result from underlying random processes that determine the occurrence and the fire size based on the FWI and various spatiotemporal factors. The model was fitted following a Bayesian approach using the Promethee database, which records fire observations in the Mediterranean area. Model projections under historical and future conditions demonstrated that FWI projections underestimated projected fire activity increases, mainly due to the non-linearity of the fire-climate relation. Thus, fire danger increases projected in summer in the Mediterranean in 2080 (pessimistic scenario) are considerably lower (25 to 59%) than those for burnt areas (48 to 202%).This approach does not apply to regions where wildfires are currently sparse, and unreliably recorded, especially in Northern France. Yet we extrapolated the model, established over the Mediterranean area, to the rest of Southern France where data were sufficient. Among the difficulties encountered while extrapolating to the national scale, the variation of fuel structure is a critical issue. It was not included in the projections, but its implications are discussed

This study aims to describe the natural state of communities of eight saproxylic beetle families known to be associated with burned forest from a sample done at stump level and in commercial black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill)) stands residual to salvage logging (natural state) from burns of 1995, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010. The study also aims to compare these communities to those found in salvaged black spruce stands distributed in burns of 1995, 2003, 2005 and 2007. Beetles were sampled during summer 2010 and over 6 000 specimens among the eight studied families were captured. In its natural state, four colonization phases have succeeded along the first five postfire years. Saproxylic beetle assemblages were affected by salvage logging for a period of seven years.

Full textDue to the social and political issues about the restoration of burned forests, this work deals with the impact of forest fires on organic and inorganic matters from forested soils collected in Maures Moutains, taking into account the fire temporal recurrence. This studied site was chosen because every year it undergoes an important pressure from wildfire. Among the three main objectives, the first one was to highlight the impact of the fire frequency on the soil quality, studying more precisely the organic matter and some nutrients. Moreover, we wanted to find fire indicators among many elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Finally, we searched to develop a tool for the management and characterization of burned soils using near infrared spectroscopy. The sampling was done for 2 soil layers in 30 sites involving different fire regimes. After the repeatability test of the employed analytical methods, the results show that fires have an impact on soil. Generally, the fires preferentially affect soil surface layers in a qualitative and quantitative way. If the fires have an impact on the soils, it is usually negative because one year after the last event, the soils present losses of the organic pool and nutrients. In addition, some elements could be considered as potential fire indicators in the long term. Comparatively to the elements, the studied PAH with the lowest molecular masses seem to be good fire indicators in the short term. Lastly, this work enabled to validate and envisage the use of a tool for the burned soil management, by the NIR spectroscopy coupled to chemometrics treatments

Full textA better understanding of the dynamic equilibrium between the vegetation and the fire recurrence is useful for Mediterranean ecosystems sustainability. The impacts of fire recurrence on vegetation, its flammability and fire behaviour, have been studied on a 50 years fire history on acidic soils in South-Eastern France (massif des Maures, Var department, France). A vegetation mosaics was described according to fire mosaics. Five classes of fire recurrence were defined, from zero to four fires with different time intervals. Time elapsed since last fire then the number of fires are the most important factors in observed modifications. Species and functional analyses confirm the resilience of most species which have been selected by a long fire history. However, some plant traits are negatively affected by fire recurrence, such as competitive strategy and zoochory. A resilience threshold can be estimated around three to four fires in 50 years. In high maquis, a very structurative species (Erica arborea L. ) dominates the stand and decreases light and space for the other species. Its cover and long life duration entail a decrease in the functional diversity, leading to a slackening in dynamics. Flammability experiments on non-disturbed litters show significant differences between the facies. The most flammable are the high maquis and medium maquis with a high biomass, characterized by very high values of combustibility and vertical propagation ability. Fire behaviour simulations indicate contrasts between low and open formations and high and dense formations. High maquis, medium maquis and cork-oak woodlands on maquis lead to high fire intensity and rate of spread. Fire recurrence mainly impacts on vegetation structure and subsequently fire behaviour. These data are useful to predict the relationships between fire and vegetation in a climatic and disturbance change context
