Full textThe intensity of a femtosecond laser pulse is strong enough to free valence electrons from the local potential of their parent atom. Therefore, the laser-matter interaction is highly non-linear which has a significant impact on the energy transfer between pulses and the material. Focusing a femtosecond pulses laser beam results in the precise deposition of energy at the focus through nonlinear absorption mechanisms. This leads to a localised refractive index change and translation of the glass sample through the focussed laser beam allows the inscription of three-dimensional photo-induced structures. The method can be applied to every material on the sole condition of transparency at the wavelength of the laser source. Those characteristics demonstrate the enormous potential of the direct writing method for the fabrication of integrated photonics devices. Further development of this powerful tool necessitates improvements of the inscription process and a better understanding of the response of optical materials to femtosecond pulses. The research project described in this thesis refers to the study of the photo-induced changes and their application to the inscription of photonic components in different types of glass. First, we demonstrated the quasi-periodic self-arrangement of multiple filaments in fused silica through self-focussing of a highly elliptical beam. We enhanced the periodicity of the multiple filaments distribution by inserting a binary phase mask in the beam path. Next, the interaction between femtosecond pulses and fluoride glasses in both repetitive and thermal inscription regime was investigated in details. An exhaustive study of the photosensitivity of Ge-S binary glass followed. In both materials we showed that the morphology and the sign of the refractive index change can be modified through precise adjustment of the exposure conditions, allowing for the direct inscription of low loss optical waveguides. Also, we showed that the response of Ge-S glass is linked with the amount of sulfur present in the glass composition. Ultimately, this thesis conveys an original contribution to the development of the direct inscription method and demonstrates the flexibility of the technique concerning the refractive index modifications of special optical glasses used in the field of optic-photonic.

Full textLaser filaments have unique advantages compared to other traditional methods when it comes to cloud seeding techniques. Till now, laser filament induced condensation has been observed in saturated or super-saturated conditions alone. Filament induced condensation in sub-saturated conditions remains mostly unexplored. We postulate that condensation is possible in sub-saturated conditions if femtosecond laser pulses of high repetition rate capable of generating a turbulence strong enough to contribute to the condensation process are used. To better understand condensation in sub-saturated conditions, an inverted cloud chamber is used. In our findings, we observe mist packets with and without a digital camera, as well as growth of water droplets under the filament, which in turn confirm our hypothesis.

Full textWhen a femtosecond laser beam is tightly focused onto transparent materials, strong field ionization followed by avalanche ionization may occur, and a fraction of laser energy is absorbed and transferred into the lattice resulting in local heating. The temperature within the irradiation zone will rise up to the melting or boiling point depending on the incident pulse fluence and material properties. As a result, either smooth modification, or well-shaped nanogratings or complex damage may occur. Coulomb explosion may also participate in the material removal process. In this thesis, we focus on the nanograting inscription on the surface of fused silica. We measure the pulse fluence which is required to induce surface nanogratings for different pulse-to-pulse spacing, uncover and quantify the incubation effect in the nanograting inscription process, and propose a modified incubation equation (ablation threshold as a function of pulse-topulse spacing). Using a scanning electron microscope, we examine the structural change on the surface induced by the combination of different writing parameters such as the pulse energy/fluence, pulse-to-pulse spacing and the depth of the focused light below the surface. We show the shot-to-shot evolution of nanogrooves in the static case for a small range of pulse fluence, and demonstrate that well-shaped nanogratings can be obtained with pulse fluence slightly above the reduced ablation threshold, and that the width and spacing of the nanogratings depend on the pulse-to-pulse spacing and pulse fluence. In particular, we propose a new model which consists of local intensity distribution and incubation effect. The progressive evolution of new local maxima and in turn the formation of new nanogrooves in pairs (static case) or in a self-replicating way (scanning case) at specific locations is in fact the physical focus behind the nanograting inscription, as is faithfully reproduced by the experiment. No previously reported model has ever been successful in that respect. Finally, we discuss and demonstrate the potential applications in direct writing of a controllable number of nanochannels and large-area nanogratings.

Full textThis work focuses on the study of chirality effects on the structure of cyclic dipeptides built on a diketopiperazine (DKP) ring with residues of identical (LL) or opposite (LD) chirality. The same systems are studied in different environments by means of optical spectroscopy coupled to quantum chemical calculations. The neutral molecules are isolated and cooled down to a few K in a supersonic expansion and characterized by UV and conformer-specific IR laser spectroscopy. The structure of the protonated systems, isolated in an ICR mass spectrometer, is determined by infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy. Last, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) is applied to the solid-state samples. The studied systems possess an aromatic residue, either tyrosine (cyclo Tyr-Pro) or phenylalanine (cyclo Phe-Phe and Phe-His). The LD diastereomer is in most of the cases less stable and more flexible than LL. LL and LD differ from each other by weak interactions like NH…π or CH…π interactions. The most stable conformer usually corresponds to a structure with the aromatic chromophore folded over the DKP ring, the other part being extended. A dramatic effect of chirality is observed for some of the protonated dimers. Last, VCD experiments in the condensed phase show that the crystal phase of LPhe-DPhe formed by solid-state dehydration of the linear dipeptide is chiral due to synchronization of the transient chirality of the monomers

Full textThis study concerned, on one hand, on the radiative and thermal couplings between the millisecond laser annealing and the layout at the surface of bare silicon and, on the other hand, on the influence of this thermal treatment on the physico-chemical properties of the doped polysilicon gate. The millisecond processes have been introduced in the CMOS 45 nm node to enhance doping species activation without any additional diffusion. This kind of ultrashort optical annealing can generate a temperature variation on the chip surface between two zones with different radiative and\or thermal properties. These temperature differences may alter the electrical performances of the devices and, in particular, those of the unsaliced-doped-polysilicon resistances. The development of a numerical model, conjugating the optical and thermal aspects of the laser scanning, allowed demonstrating that these temperature variations could overtake 600°C during an irradiation directly on the layout. On the other hand, this difference can be appreciably reduced (90 %) in the presence of an absorbent layer. Moreover, the revealing of a massive redistribution of doping species inside the polysilicon was connected with the strong segregation in the grain boundaries quantified by STEM EELS and Atom Probe Tomography. Finally, the electrical gains observed in terms of activation have been associated to the grain growth generated by this additional laser step

Full textThe laser facilities designed to realize laser inertial confinement thermonuclear fusion experiments use numerous laser beams in order to meet irradiation symmetry constraints and to deposite enough energy in matter. Unfortunately, the crossing of laser beams in plasmas modifies their propagations. When a beam is propagating in plasmas, it can interact with ion acoustic waves and scatter its energy by stimulated Brillouin scattering. Not only the directions but also the levels of these scatterings are modified when beams are crossing one another in plasmas. This manuscript is about the experimental study of two kinds of multiple-beam modification:- the flexibility of the LULI2000 laser facility (Laboratoire d'Utilisation de Lasers Intenses, Palaiseau, France) enabled us to study crossed-beam energy transfer between two and three beams;- the sixty laser beams available on the OMEGA facility (Laboratory for Laser Energetics, Rochester, United-States) enabled us to observe scattering of collective Brillouin instabilities produced in planar geometries and at the entrance hole of cavities of fusion experiments. These two mecanisms can highly modify the initial laser irradiation by transferring up to 30% of the laser energy between beams and by scattering more than 10% of the laser energy in unusual directions

Full textFiber lasers are robust, reliable and efficient laser sources that also offer an unrivaled beam quality, but most are limited to the specific spectral bands where rare-earth electronic transitions exist. Raman fiber lasers, however, can be operated on virtually any emission wavelength and can be used to bridge the gap between these rare-earth emission bands. Therefore, they could be designed to emit on any wavelength between 2 and 4 m, which would find many applications in the medical, military and spectroscopic fields. Standard silicate fibers cannot be considered for this purpose, due to their limited transparency at wavelengths over 2.2 m. Fluoride and chalcogenide glass fibers are much better suited for this task even though they bring new technical challenges. During our Ph.D. project, Raman lasers based on both fluorozirconate and arsenic trisulphide (As2S3) glass fibers were studied. In fact, we reported the very first experimental Raman cavities based on these materials. First, fluorozirconate Raman cavities emitting around 2.2 m and pumped by a Tm:silica fiber laser were assembled and perfected. Based on an architecture where the Raman and pump laser cavities are nested, we have achieved high output power levels, up to a few watts. We have also demonstrated As2S3 Raman cavities operating directly in the mid-infrared, at 3.34 m. They were pumped by an in-house made erbium doped fluoride fiber laser at 3 m. Due to the high Raman gain of chalcogenide glasses, only a few meters of fiber were required. The behavior of these laser sources was also investigated numerically to find their optimal operating parameters and to identify their limits. The results obtained prove that fiber lasers are well suited for generating a wide range of wavelengths between 2 and 4 um.

Full textEach beam of a high power laser facility, such as the Laser MégaJoule, is shaped and amplified thanks to hundreds optical components such as amplifier slabs at Brewster’s angle, lenses, mirrors, phase plates, diffraction gratings... Of course, all these components cannot be perfect; there are some defects on their surface. These imperfections appear at each stage of the life of the component, during polishing, coating, or mitigation process or when the component is used on the facility. They have a huge impact on the energy losses delivered on the target and they decrease the resistance of downstream components to intense light. The ISO 10110-7 standard is currently used to specify the visual defects. However, this standard is poorly justified and do not fit a high power laser needs. In this thesis, we are focused on the fratricide effect. Light propagates through a defect, then, some intensity modulations appear along the propagation. The damage law states that high energy density leads to an increase of the damage probability. Firstly, we investigate the characteristic parameters of the defect morphology linked to the formation of downstream << hot spots >>. Then, the link between these typical parameters and the high intensifications are confirmed by experiments on real defects. Secondly, a power criterion is demonstrated to guarantee the linear propagation hypothesis. This criterion is compared to numerical simulations and it is shown how the nonlinear propagation, induced by Kerr effect, can be different between the << hot spot >> formed by a defect and a Gaussian beam. Finally, the results are used to improve the visual defect specification thanks to a better understanding of the fratricide effect

Full textPhotonic Integrated Circuits (PIC) have become key elements to perform broadband transmission and reception functions in optical communication networks. This thesis provides information on hybrid semiconductor lasers (SCL) consisting of an active layer of III-V materials on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate to jointly explode the emitting properties of III-V layers and the numerous advantages offered by Si for on-chip applications. Due to the significant technological developments in electronics, this hybrid approach is well positioned to meet the high volume requirements for short distance transmission and access networks at a lower cost. However, several challengest still exist such as the lack of effective light sources and isolator-free devices. From a monolithic perspective of a PIC hetereogeneous integration, it is essential to ensure that the parasitic reflections that may stem from multiple locations do not affect the stability of the laser. Specifically, III-V hybrid components on Si appear to have many potential sources of reflections that can create centimeter external cavities in addition to those naturally produced inside the fiber in the order of several meters. Therefore, the work presented herein aims at understanding the behavior of III-V/Si SCLs when subjected to a variation of optical feedback, explores the basics aspects of chaotic dynamics, and investigates potential applications suitable for optical telecommunication systems in an attempt to meet the existing an emerging high speed requirements

Full textThis thesis aims at understanding chirality effects on the structure and photoreactivity of biomolecules in the gas phase by combining laser spectroscopy coupled to mass spectrometry and quantum chemical calculations. Comparison between experimental and simulated spectra allows determining the structure of the species under study and understanding their photoreactivity. The first part of this work focuses on the structural differences between the two diastereoisomers of a cyclic dipeptide, cyclo Tyr-Tyr. Only one form is observed when the two residues have different chirality. In this form, one of the aromatic rings is folded over the dipeptide ring and the other one is extended outwards. For the diastereomer with residues of identical chirality, this form coexists with a structure in which the two aromatic rings are in a stacked position, stabilized by hydrogen bond formation. The second part of this thesis deals with the structure and the nature of the excited states of complexes of cinchona alkaloids with sulfuric acid. An important finding is that the complexes are formed by adding the bisulfate ions to doubly-protonated alkaloid. The presence of the bisulfate ion has a protective effect towards photodissociation thanks to the cage effect, which is identical for quinine and its pseudo enantiomer quinidine

Full textIn this thesis, we have developed and characterized a new type of gas phase source of biomolecules which based on non-resonant laser desorption on microdroplets directly under vacuum. This device will eventually allow us to open an original way to study the effects of ionizing radiation on organic molecules from a physical point of view. We will present in detail this device with which we transfered with sucess under vacuum,in a non-destructively way, biomolecules and non-covalent complexes in a mass range of the order of kDa and we assigned them with time-of-ight mass spectrometry. We will show in particular the technical challenges that we had to overcome in order to allow the transfer of microdroplets under vacuum and how by simulation of the spectrometer, we have been able to highly optimize the collection parameters of the desorbed molecular species and the mass resolution of our system, by replacing, in the desorption zone, delayed extraction by a quadrupole electrostatic trap. Finally, we will describe the way in which this device, coupled to a simply charged ion irradiation platform with an energy of the order of the keV, will enable us to characterizeon a molecular scale the damage due to radio-induced radical chemistry mechanisms

Full textOptical fibres tend to replace coaxial cables in many systems of transport and processing of microwave signals. In particular, future generations of radar systems will be equipped with opto-electronic links thus using with profit the advantages of optical fibres (weak weight, size, cost and large bandwidth). In these future radar systems, the linear transposition of microwave information on optical carrier with traditional integrated intensity modulators (such as mach-zehnder) is amplitude-limited. The resulting signal is thus composed of a weak modulated part containing the microwave information and of a strong continuous component which can saturate some of the opto-electronic link components. In this work we studied two non-linear processes in optical fibres allowing selective and dynamic attenuation of the optical carrier only, without any attenuation of the microwave signal. This means an increase of the signal contrast, that is to say an increase of its modulation depth. The first studied effect is stimulated brillouin scattering in optical fibres (including in photonic crystal fibres). The second studied effect is two wave mixing by gain saturation in an amplifying optical fibre. The feasibility of modulation depth increase of the microwave signal by these two techniques respectively has been proven. An increase of the modulation depth of the signal by a factor 10 000 has been demonstrated

Full textThe water mist is first characterized without flame : measurements of droplets diameters, droplets density and mass flow rate are performed. Then, the temperature field within the flame is established, without and then with water mist. Absorption fields and diffusion coefficients for two wavelengths are also determined in order to determine the relative contribution of absorption and diffusion processes. The knowledge of these experimental fields allows for the calculation of radiative flux towards the fuel surface with a Discrete Ordinates Method algorithm. Computed radiative flux values are compared with experimental values. Tomographic images of the mist-flame interaction flow are obtained. A PIV treatment of these images allows for the determination of droplets speed fields in order to get a better understanding of the dynamic interaction between the droplets and the flame. The study also shows that the introduction of steam within the flame has a chemical effect

Full textThe natural radiative space environment is composed by numerously particles in a very large energy spectrum. From an electronics component point of view, it is possible to distinguish cumulative effects and so-called Analog Single Event Transient effects (ASET). Cumulative effects correspond to continuous deterioration of the electrical parameters of the component, due to a low dose rate energy deposition (Total Ionizing Dose: TID) throughout the space mission. ASETs are caused by a single energetic particle crossing a sensitive area of the component inducing a transient voltage pulse that occurs at the output of the application. During ground testing, both effects are studied separately but happen simultaneously in flight. As a result a synergy effect, induced by the combination of the low dose rate energy deposition and the sudden occurrence of an ASET in the device previously irradiated, occurs. A study of dose-ASET synergistic effects is proposed using an accelerated irradiation test technique known as Dose Rate Switching method (DRS) tacking into account the concern of the Enhanced Low Dose Rate Sensitivity (ELDRS). A High Level Model is developed using circuit analysis to predict the synergy effect observed on a three stages operational amplifier. To predict synergy effect, the TID effect is taken into account by varying the model parameters following a variation law deduced from the degradation of the supply current which recorded during usual industrial TID testing. Finally, the Transient Radiation Effects on Electronics (TREE) phenomena induced by a Very High Dose Rate X-ray pulse environment and the dose-TREE synergy effect are then investigated using an X-ray flash facility. The classical ASETs methodology analysis can explain the shapes of transients observed
