Full textThe WHO 2010 guidelines recommended to treat all HIV-infected children < 2 years of age, and for those < three years, a lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) based antiretroviraltherapy (ART) is recommended. But, less is known about its field implementation and effectiveness in West Africa (WA) settings. Our objective was to document the midterm (25 months) outcomes of the early ART (EART) initiation in West-African HIVinfected infants before the age of two years and its correlates. We assessed thefeasibility of EART; to assess its clinical, immunological, virological outcomes and its tolerance; to assess its simplification by switching to a protease inhibitor-sparingtherapy based on efavirenz (EFV) in virologically suppressed infants; and to describe the HIV drug resistance profile in those with virological failure. Our findings show thatin WA settings, EART is feasible, but access to early infant HIV diagnosis and EART remains too late with a high rate of competing mortality before and after ART initiation.Despite this delay, LPV/r-based EART is well tolerate and effective in mid-term with viral suppression reaching 78% 12-month and 74% at-24-months. In virologically suppressed children, LPV/r-based ART could be simplify with EFV-based ART, but this simplification strategy needs implementation in adherent infants with a closely viralload monitoring. In children with virological failure, resistance analyses highlighted a high frequency of nucleoside and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitorsresistance mutations. It is urgent to develop innovative interventions to improve early HIV-infected infant diagnosis and EART and to strengthen lifelong treatment adherence in WA

Full textThe issue of energy has emerged as one of the greatest challenges facing the mankind. The search is on for finding alternative sources of energy that will replace fossil fuels as the primary source of energy. However, for the foreseeable future, fossil fuels will remain the main source of energy. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to devise methodologies for more rational use of energy in all walks of human life. In the industrial perspective, the deployment of site utility system (generally CHP plants) provides a great potential source for energy savings. However, the management of such type of industrial units is traditionally carried out using sequential three step approach: scheduling of the production plant, estimation of the utility needs of production plant and finally scheduling of the site utility system. In this kind of approach, all the focus is placed on the production plant and the utility system is treated as its subsidiary. To improve the decision-making process, this thesis proposes an integrated approach which addresses this imbalance by carrying out simultaneous and coherent scheduling of batch production plant and site utility system. The proposed methodology relies on discrete time modeling and uses Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP). Moreover, to permit an efficient and generic formulation of various kinds of industrial problems, a new scheduling framework called Extended Resource Task Network (ERTN) has been developed. The ERTN framework (an extension of existing RTN framework) allows for accurate representation and scheduling of any type of production plant and any type of site utility system. The results show that the integrated approach leads to better synchronization between production plant and site utility system. Thereby, the integrated approach leads to significant reduction in energy costs and decrease in harmful gas emissions

Full textThis thesis is interested in accounting practices within SMEs, factors that are able to influence the use of accounting practices, the most developed costs as well as the operational and strategic contribution of these practices within the SMEs while making a comparison with the characteristics of midsize companies. We resorted to the contingency theory to set up our research. We contacted eight companies through several face- to -face interviews, and seventy companies through questioning. We found out that the SMEs characteristics as regards accounting of costs are different. This difference can be explained by three factors: the organization’s size, the product's diversity, and the decentralized structure of the company. Equally, we found out that the operational utility of instruments of accounting costs is looked as the most mannered one by companies that do not use them. However, the perception of the strategic utility do not differ between users and non-users of new methods

Full textAmid growing concerns over global warming, the shipping industry, particularly the cruise ship sector, has come under increased scrutiny. This thesis focuses on harnessing machine learning and operations research to enhance energy efficiency within the industry. The work has focused on two broad aspects of energy efficiency in cruise ships: operational and design energy efficiency. From an operational perspective, the research prioritizes the optimization of the propulsion system, a cruise ship's primary energy consumer. Key contributions include innovative machine learning methodologies for the propulsion system, ensuring real-world applicability through hindcast weather data and a systematic data-splitting approach. Two applications, fluid deadweight management and studying biofouling's impact on propulsion efficiency, are discussed. On the design front, we introduce a Mixed Integer Linear Programming model for cruise ship multi-energy systems, aiming to optimize design and operation concurrently. A bi-objective optimization considering lifecycle costs and greenhouse gas emissions was undertaken, with solutions derived from the epsilon-constraint method and by integrating carbon taxes. Overall, this work underscores the potential of machine learning and operations research inadvancing the cruise ship industry's energy efficiency, laying a foundation for their broader applications in the future

Full textThis thesis proposes a modeling approach of an adaptive and iterative data collection process, and a validation tool via operational effectiveness features for equipment. An approach, named "Tropos", established based on the information theory, is developed to modeling and evaluating data collection processes. This is an original approach, which allows synthesizing three features that characterize the effectiveness of a data collection process: 1) data usefulness, 2) process complexity, 3) gain of information by a basic process activity. An original model, based on colored stochastic Petri nets coupled to the Monte Carlo simulation, has also been developed to validate the effectiveness of the data collection process. This model uses as input, stochastic process models of degradation, of failure and of maintenance of equipment components. The input parameters of the models are assumed to be known and obtained from the collected data. The properties of colored stochastic Petri net model are also used to derive the minimum cuts required to assess the equipment condition and operational effectiveness. These properties also allow to treating systems of k/n structures. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is finally illustrated on a multi-source renewable energy production system, by implementing the algorithms of the model under the Silab software environment

Full textToday’s digital transformation has definitely changed the customers practices. In fact, through the new information and communication tools, a customer can at any time create, modify, or cancel an order. These unexpected events have a direct impact on the work organization of the production unit, generating a disruption of the already established schedule. Therefore, a rescheduling process is necessary for efficiently revising the existing schedule, preferably with less movements. In this Ph.D, mathematical models and optimization methods are developed for rescheduling problems, under different types of disruptions, in several machine environments. The performance of the obtained solutions is measured with a new criterion, simultaneously combining the schedule efficiency and stability. The predictive-reactive scheduling strategy has been adopted in this work. It consists, in the predictive phase, to solve a classical scheduling problem minimizing the Total Weighted Waiting Time (TWWT) of the jobs, regarded as the schedule efficiency criterion. After the disruption appearance, the reactive phase starts. It consists in updating the initial problem by modifying its data, then solving the new rescheduling problem with the objective of minimizing the TWWT combined with a stability criterion. The schedule stability is measured with the Total Weighted Completion Time Deviation (TWCTD). This association of criteria is significant, and it can be very helpful in industrial applications, where the job waiting time estimates the duration that the job has waited in front of a workstation. The stability criterion is then used for limiting the deviation from the already established schedule, since this matter generates supplementary costs. This approach has been applied for different machine environments. Firstly, on a single machine, illustrating the case of a single workstation. Secondly, on parallel machines, describing the case of identical workstations. Finally, on a flowshop system where a set of jobs are treated in the same order by a set of machines. The flowshop rescheduling problem is also considered with mixed blocking constraints. These rescheduling problems have firstly been modeled as Mixed Integer Linear Programing (MILP) models. Due to their NP-hard complexity, the resolution is only possible for a limited number of jobs. Thus, heuristic methods have been designed, exploring more jobs in a reasonable time. The proposed methods have been discussed and analyzed, both in terms of solution quality and computing time

Full textRadio frequencies, as currently allocated, are statically managed. Spectrum sharing between commercial users and incumbent users in the Federal bands has been considered by regulators, industry, and academia as a great way to enhance productivity and effectiveness in spectrum use. However, allowing secondary users to share frequency bands with sensitive government incumbent users creates new privacy threats in the form of inference attacks. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to enhance the privacy of the incumbent while allowing secondary access to the spectrum. First, we present a brief description of different sharing regulations and privacy requirements in Federal bands. We also survey the privacy-preserving techniques (i.e., obfuscation) proposed in data mining and publishing to thwart inference attacks. Next, we propose and implement our approach to protect the operational frequency and location of the incumbent operations from inferences. We follow with research on frequency protection using inherent and explicit obfuscation to preserve the incumbent's privacy. Then, we address location protection using trust as the main countermeasure to identify and mitigate an inference risk. Finally, we present a risk-based framework that integrates our work and accommodates other privacy-preserving approaches. This work is supported with models, simulations and results that showcase our work and quantify the importance of evaluating privacy-preserving techniques and analyzing the trade-off between privacy protection and spectrum efficiency
