Abstract:
For people aged 44 and under, the primary cause of loss of life in the U.S. is not due to heart disease or cancer, but to something as common as injuries (U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1998). As such, injuries kill an average of 142,000 Americans and require an estimated 62.5 billion dollars in medical attention each year (U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1998). This is close to three people dying and over 170 people sustaining a disabling injury every 10 minutes (National Safety Council, 1999). Every year more than 80,000 Americans are permanently disabled as a result of injury to the br

Abstract:
Background: In order to perform cataract surgery, adequate dilatation of the pupil is essential. This is traditionally achieved by preoperative topical mydriatic eye-drops, commonly cyclopentolate and phenylephrine. This routine has several disadvantages. First, the slow penetration through the cornea delays the onset of mydriasis. Second, the limited bioavailability of topically administered substances with significant systemic absorption may increase the risk for systemic side effects. Third, even if good mydriasis is achieved initially with topical mydriatics (TM), the effect tends to wear

We hypothesized that there will be a greater number of adverse events reported for proprietary products than for the individual active ingredients. Additionally, we also wanted to look at the efficacy of the same aforementioned products. We hypothesized that there would be no statistically significant differences in performance betwee

In the first chapter it is discussed the research work entitled “Efficacy and Safety of Biological Treatments of Multiple Sclerosis”. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory, demyelinating disease associated with progressive neurodegeneration which can be seen as a two phase disease: one early acute inflammatory phase and a delayed neurodegenerative phase. However, over time, MS doesn’t follow a fixed pattern and may differ from person to pers

Abstract:
The 4lb/gal (4F) formulation of oxyfluorfen was significantly safer than the 2 lb/gal (2XL) formulation on broccoli when applied at the 2 or 3-leaf stages of growth. At 6 days after treatment of the first application at the cotyledon stage of the broccoli, significant injury to the broccoli ranged from 30 to 66% for all oxyfluorfen treatments. Crop stand reduction did not occur with either formulation. The 4F formulation at 0.25 lb AI/A gave nearly the same weed control as the 2XL formulation at 0.063 lb AI/A. Phenylpropanolamine (PPA), a synthetic sympathomimetic amine, is widely used as a nasal decongestant and as an appetite suppressant. Much controversy exists regarding the efficacy of the drug as an anorectic agent, the related adverse reactions caused by the relatively high doses required for appetite suppression and the potential of this drug for abuse. Whilst numerous studies have been carried out to assess the central and cardiovascular safety of PPA and many investigations have been performed to evaluate efficacy in terms of weight loss in humans, there is a relative paucity of information
