This study aims to develop a path analysis of marketing distribution efficiency of small pelagic fish in the islands, particularly on Ambon Island, and investigate its most significant determinant. Producer price, consumer price, marketing cost and marketing margin are examined as determinants of marketing efficiency. An efficient marketing system provides benefits for business actors involved in the production process, so that their products can reach target consumers. A longer marketing chain results in higher marketing costs, which ultimately determines the end consumer price. The data was

My dissertation contains three essays on short-selling, margin trading, and market efficiency. The first essay uses a unique exogenous event, the introduction of short selling in the Chinese stock market, to examine the direct link between idiosyncratic risk and short selling. Based on Shleifer and Vishny (1997), I hypothesize that idiosyncratic risk deters arbitrageurs with negative information from taking short positions in overvalued stocks. Consequently, the stocks with high idiosyncratic risk are more overvalued at the onset of the introduction of short sale and perform worse in the subse

It has been shown in several cases that casing treatments can improve the surge margin of a compressor. The question that is often left unanswered when designing and optimizing a casing treatment for a given compressor stage is whether the casing treatment can still improve the performance and surge margin when used on an aerodynamically improved rotor. The current work includes the influence of the rotor geometry and casing geometry in the analysis. Several optimizations with equal objectives, to improve surge margin and efficiency, were performed. To design a highly loaded axial transonic compressor several objectives need to be considered simultaneously. From an aerodynamic perspective, one of the major requirements is high efficiency at a specific operating condition where the fuel consumption is of main interest. Furthermore, the compressor needs to have a sufficient stall-margin along the entire flight envelope to ensure a stable operating range. This work is focused on creating an efficient design method which produces a trade-off between high stall margin and high efficiency. The design method is based on an automatic multiobjecti

Abstract Centrifugal compressors for multi-stage industrial applications must have both high efficiency and stable operation over a wide flow range. CFD analyses were used to evaluate the stall margins of candidate impeller designs compared to a baseline semi-inducer design. With this guidance, a new full-inducer impeller was designed with predicted wider operating range and slightly higher peak efficiency. Prototype tests confirmed these predictions. This paper presents predictions from two CFD codes and test results, for both the original and the redesigned impeller, and discusses the applic

This paper explains a method used to detect the presence of impulse noise in a set of scanned documents as a part of OCR preprocessing. As the document set is supposed to be processed in large scale, the primary concern of the noise detection method was efficiency within existing project constraints. Following the nature of noise, the method seeks to detect the presence of noise in document margins. The method works in two stages. First stage is margin detection, based on color spectre analysis. Second stage is noise recognition in margin samples, based on a pixel contrast score. The resulting

This paper quantifies the signaling role of education and measures the associated efficiency losses from asymmetric information. To that end, I model educational attainment and occupational choices in an asymmetric information environment with employer learning and socially productive education. The model highlights how occupational sorting and the pace of employer learning jointly determine the strength of the signaling motive in equilibrium. I estimate the signaling role of education versus human capital by relating differences in employer learning across occupations, which generates variati

The overall objective of this proposal is to understand how realistic strategies for incorporating alternative foods into wheat fields affect the intraguild (IG) interactions of omnivorous and carnivorous predators and their efficacy as biological control agents. Cereal aphids are a primary pest of wheat throughout much of the world. Naturally occurring predator communities consume large quantities of cereal aphids in wheat, and are partitioned into aphid specialists and omnivores. Within wheat fields, the relative abilities of omnivorous and carnivorous predators to reduce cereal aphids depen

What are the welfare implications of markup heterogeneity across firms? In standard monopolistic competition models, such heterogeneity implies inefficiency even in the presence of free entry. We enrich the standard model with heterogeneous firms so that preferences are non-separable in off market time and market consumption and show that this changes the welfare implications of markup heterogeneity. In this context, homogeneity of markups is neither necessary nor sufficient for efficiency. The marginal cost of the marginal firm is weakly inefficiently high when off-market time and market cons

Companies face different effective marginal tax rates on their income. This can be detrimental to allocative efficiency unless taxes offset other distortions in the economy. This paper estimates the effect of tax rate heterogeneity on aggregate productivity in distorted economies with multiple frictions. Using firm-level balance-sheet data and estimates of marginal tax rates, we find that tax heterogeneity reduces total factor productivity by about 3 percent. Our findings highlight the positive correlation between marginal tax rates and other distortions to capital and especially labor. This i

Abstract:
In this paper, It has been addressed this question using firm-level panel data from 12 developing countries. It was also developed a summary index of the efficiency of investment allocation that measures whether, and to what extent, investment funds are going to firms with a higher marginal return to capital. Then it was examined the relationship between this index and various measures of financial liberalization. The results suggested that in the majority of cases financial reform has led to an increase in the efficiency with which investment funds are allocated.

This paper develops a complete decomposition of the change in global welfare in the GTAP model. In particular, this money metric change is broken down into component parts, each of which relates to a quantity change interacting with a distortion in the model. This enables the user to assess, for example, how much of the gains from trade reform are attributable to a given commodity and/or a given region. The commodity and region specific changes in allocative efficiency can be further decomposed by transaction/tax instrument. We find that this greatly facilitates the presentation and analysis o

Urban sustainability requires reducing the environmental footprint of urban mobility. To achieve this goal public transport becomes key due to its lower impact on congestion, pollution, accidents and greenhouse gas emissions as compared to private transport. Thus, encouraging public transport use is a frequent goal among city authorities. For this, they often devote an important fraction of their budget to improve the quality of its service. Many cities subsidize not just the infrastructure for public transport, but also its operation based on (some of) the following reasons. 1. As a second-be

We develop a theory of commodity taxation featuring imperfect competition along with love-of- variety preferences and endogenous firm entry and exit, and we derive new formulas for the efficiency and pass-through of specific and ad valorem taxes. These formulas unify existing canonical ones and feature a new term capturing the effect of variety on consumer surplus. Intuitively, if taxes reduce product varieties in the market, then the impact on social welfare depends on how much consumers value variety. As a proof-of-concept, we use the theoretical formulas to identify love-of variety preferen
