Abstract:
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2011.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 42-45).
For the last 30 years, experts have claimed that energy efficiency upgrades in existing buildings can lead to significant reductions in energy use, yet efficiency programs, particularly those geared towards households, have failed to meet expectations. Through interviews with participants of the Community Energy Services program in Minneapolis, Minnesota, I identify the barriers to investing in energy efficiency facing homeowners, even with a cutting-edge program that combines technical and financial assistance and seeks to create neighborhood norms around addressing energy efficiency. I argue that it is important to distinguish between financial and logistical barriers and emotional or psychological barriers. Both are important to convince a homeowner to take action, yet Community Energy Services, like many other programs, focuses too much on the former, while failing to make a compelling emotional argument for the majority of their participants. The Community Energy Services program improves on previous energy efficiency programs by simplifying the process and supporting the homeowner. It provides a promising model that, once strengthened with a more convincing emotional argument for upgrades, could be a breakthrough to significant reductions in energy use.
by Stephanie Stern.
M.C.P.

Abstract:
The European Union faces challenges related to climate change, security of energy supply, and competitiveness of European industries. Energy efficiency indicators are required for monitoring and controlling the effectiveness of policies such as the recently endorsed Energy Efficiency Directive. This thesis aims at assessing whether traditionally used energy efficiency indicators capture the development of energy efficiency in the iron and steel sector. The study is based on results from two statistical methods: a top-down, i.e. Malmquist productivity index, and a bottom-up, i.e. partial least squares regression. The specific energy consumption (the indicator representing the sector within the Odyssee energy efficiency index) was scrutinised together with associated indicators based on economic production using the aforementioned statistical methods. The results demonstrated the specific energy consumption does not capture the characteristics of the value chain of steel products. Therefore, it is not sufficient for capturing the energy efficiency of iron and steel industries. Previous studies suggest using indicators based on economic production (e.g. value added) since they represent the value chain to larger degree. However, the value creation process of companies belonging to larger international groups cannot be estimated reliably. Furthermore, the trends of both types of indicators tend to be highly influenced by structural changes, veiling the actual efficiency development. Energy use statistics published by international organisations were also compared for the Swedish case. The results demonstrated that international organisations use different methodologies for allocating energy use statistics between consumption and transformation sectors. The method has significant implications on the trends observed, if based on openly available statistics. This thesis complements previous research by reviewing implications of traditional energy efficiency indicators based on company data, national statistics or openly available statistics and contributes with insights essential for future efforts towards improving energy efficiency indicators for the steel industry.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This doctoral project was prompted by the endurance of an under-deployment of energy-efficiency technologies and the little academic research analyzing real-life challenges of increasing these technologies' diffusion. The thesis conducts an ex-post impact evaluation of the diffusion of Combined Heat and Power (CHP or cogeneration) in three European Union (EU). As such, the thesis seeks to build the empirical research-base on EE technology deployment and learn lessons for current framework of theoretical interpretation of technological change. In so doing, the thesis builds on alternative economic theories and provides new elements for understanding the enduring under-deployment of cost-effective EE technologies. The impact evaluation of cogeneration diffusion provides les sons for policy makers in increasing the deployment of cost-effective energy-efficiency technologies.

Brown, Amy Michelle. "Improving the Efficiency of Hub Operations in a Less-than-Truckload Distribution Network." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/10131.

Full text
Abstract:
The less-than-truckload (LTL) industry is highly competitive, with recent average profit margins less than 3%. LTL shipments are routed through a network of service centers and hubs. The performance of the entire LTL distribution network is highly dependent on the speed and accuracy of the hub operations. The focus of this research effort is to improve hub operations in order to reduce costs and increase service performance levels. Specifically, new approaches are investigated for assigning trailers to dock doors and sequencing the unloading of shipments at hubs. This thesis reviews current industry practices and available research literature on hub operations. Solution approaches for the trailer-to-door assignment and freight sequencing problems are presented along with case study results. The main performance measures are bottleneck time, total labor time, and total travel distance. For the trailer-to-door assignment problem, also referred to as the hub layout problem, the three approaches investigated are the original approach, a semi-permanent approach, and a dynamic approach. For the freight sequencing problem, the five approaches evaluated are trailer-at-a-time, trailer-at-a-time with offloading, nearest neighbor within a group, nearest neighbor within a shared group, and nearest neighbor. The approaches are implemented in C++ and analyzed using data from a regional LTL carrier. The case study results indicate that the dynamic layout performs significantly better than the original and semi-permanent layout for total distance, total labor time, and bottleneck time. For total distance and total labor time, the dynamic layout with nearest neighbor sequencing is the preferred approach. For bottleneck time, the dynamic layout with trailer-at-a-time with offloading performs best, while the nearest neighbor sequencing approach performs almost as well. In general, the case study results indicate that a dynamic layout with either a trailer-at-a-time with offloading approach or a nearest neighbor approach offers the largest potential for improvement. The assumptions and results of the hub layout and freight sequencing approaches are further evaluated using a simulation model. The simulation model indicates that a dynamic layout with nearest neighbor sequencing offers the largest potential for improvement in a more realistic environment with probabilistic and dynamic events. The simulation results also indicate that the trailer-at-a-time with offloading approach may need to be modified to account for more realistic dock conditions. In summary, the approaches explored in this research offer significant opportunity to improve hub operations through reducing bottleneck time, total labor time, and total travel distance.
Master of Science

Crauderueff, Robert (Robert Joseph). "Driving equitable demand : early lessons from the BetterBuildings Program to access 'hard-to-reach' communities for energy efficiency building improvements." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/66884.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2011.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 69-73).
Increasing the energy efficiency of low- to moderate-income and minority-occupied households could significantly reduce energy consumption in the United States. Strategies to access these 'hard to reach' households, however, are not well understood. The federal Department of Energy's $486 million BetterBuildings program funds 34 grantees to transform regional energy efficiency markets while accessing households occupied by people of many incomes and ethnicities. This thesis assesses how BetterBuildings programs may access hard-to-reach households by conducting a survey of programs nationally, follow-up interviews, and a case study of Greensboro, North Carolina's program. The survey and interviews indicate that incorporating hard-to-reach households into large-scale pilot projects may enhance efforts to transform energy efficiency markets. Grantees are using financing and grant programs, geographic targeting strategies, and innovative community outreach strategies to access hard-to-reach households. Through examining the case of Greensboro, North Carolina, this thesis argues that policymakers and program managers may increase access to hard-to-reach households by partnering, during program design, with stakeholders who have local knowledge of hard-to-reach households, technical proficiency, and capacity to implement a program targeting these households. Implementation challenges in Greensboro indicate that political support may be necessary to create and sustain access to hard-to-reach households, and grassroots organizations that partner with public agencies may need to develop alternative organizational structures to remain politically active. This thesis recommends that analysts and policymakers identify the conditions under which programs could access low- and moderate-income and minority-occupied households, rather than assume these households are inherently hard-to-reach. Finally, this thesis puts forth a Flexible "D.E.E.P." Equity Framework suggesting that programs could access hard-to-reach households by focusing on the democratic participation of stakeholders with local knowledge, market transformation, economic models, and the importance of place. Programs should evaluate accessibility outcomes, associated energy savings, and the conditions and processes that led to these outcomes.
by Robert Crauderueff.
M.C.P.

Knamiller, C. "The impact of domestic water user cultures on water efficiency interventions in the South East of England : lessons for water demand management." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/5329.

Full text
Abstract:
The need for a more sustainable approach to water consumption has increasingly gained attention in the last decade. The domestic sector accounts for over half of abstracted water in the UK and, as such, has become a major target for water efficiency interventions. Current research and water efficiency interventions are dominated by a positivist approach, focusing on a limited range of factors that can be quantitatively measured. This thesis questions the dominant approach and argues that a more holistic overview of water efficiency can be achieved through the consideration of socio-technical and behavioural theories. Taking a more constructivist approach, this research draws on four theories from socio-technical and behavioural fields and combines them to create a framework for the analysis of water efficiency interventions. The framework is applied to two case studies, exploring water users' perceptions of water, water supply, personal water use, and their responses to the water efficiency interventions. The case studies were selected to provide examples of current mainstream approaches to water demand management. Research methods used included semi-structured interviews and observation. The research findings support the argument that the current dominant approach to domestic water efficiency interventions is limited and, in some cases, ineffectual. Issues of trust, knowledge, motivation and the relationships between water users and water companies were raised. The thesis concludes that the use of a constructivist perspective could help to provide a more effective approach to understanding and improving water demand management.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT A LESSON FROM THE URBAN GARDEN Jamie Hamblin Purpose: In 2008 the world’s urban population surpassed the rural population; furthermore, the United Nations estimates by 2025 the world’s urban population will increase by about one billion people. Given recent population shifts and the interconnectedness between food and health, this research examines the role of agriculture in addressing urban food insecurity by reviewing urban interventions with a goal of food production. Methods: Using the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework, an adjusted theoretical framework was developed which accounted for negative implications of these interventions as well as sustainability. Ultimately, the framework generated a food security score respective of each project. Using this score, statistical tests were conducted to confirm characteristics of more effective projects. Results: Statistical analysis indicates food security score has a strong correlation with physical, future and social capital (0.72, 0.73 and 0.80 respectively). Food security score has a moderate correlation with duration of project and a strong correlation with number of project components (0.60 and 0.83). Furthermore, mean food security score of projects which used participatory methods was statistically different than mean food security score of projects which did not use participatory methods (p=0.01). Conclusions: Participatory methods prove an important aspect of an urban agricultural intervention. Statistical results affirm urban food insecurity should be addressed through an integrated strategy which considers long-term viability of the project. Food security score, developed for this research, can help identify valuable components of interventions; however, this system is fairly subjective with some limitations.

Abstract:
The utilization and management of blood is an imperative undertaking when considering the cost, risk and limited resources involved. Mountain States Health Alliance, with the guidance and dedication from Dr. Andrew Fletcher and his team, were able to sustain a 20% reduction in blood utilization overall since the inception of the project to present. Mountain States was also able to save approximately $250,000 over a one-year period due to the change in policy and procedure of ordering blood as well as the close and thoughtful monitoring of the entire health system’s blood usage. This change in policy not only produced monetary and resource savings, it also reduced the risk of adverse transfusion reactions and created a more patient-centered approach to supplying and ordering blood for the patients of the health system. As the health care system as a whole is continuously struggling to keep up with demands for more efficient use of resources, this model can be and has been adapted to other resources such as pharmacy and radiology, and will continue to be useful in effecting efficiency across healthcare facilities.

Bardeen, Matthew D. "Lesson from Daisyworld survival of the stable." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.504380.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents findings that suggest that the survival of the fittest is synonymous with the survival of the stable. Richard Dawkins laid out a compelling framework for looking evolution from the perspective of the gene. The Gaia hypothesis and niche construction point to the coevolution of gene and environment. Under the assumption that gene and environment co-evolve it is found that there is strong tendency for a system to seek stable solutions which may or may not optimise the organisms to the environment. It is argued that this thought should be the guiding principle when looking at the evolution of natural and man made systems. The thesis uses the framework of the Daisyworld model developed by Watson and Lovelock to demonstrate these ideas. To this end the original Daisyworld model is analysed and an analytical solution for the equations is provided. The analyses suggest a maximisation of growth rates in an system with evolving albedos. This behaviour is then compared to an two dimensional model of the Daisyworld and the differences are clearly enumerated. Following this an extension is made to the two dimensional model to allow the evolution of mutation rate. The model is then shown not to maximise growth rate, but instead stability. It also shows the evolution of levels of selection higher than the individual or gene and suggests that this is completely compatible with a gene level perspective. It is thus argued that the focus of evolution is not individuals or genes, but rather the systems of which they are a part.

Bean, Christopher B. "James Earl Rudder: A Lesson in Leadership." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2003. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc4371/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is the about the life of Rudder. The emphasis of this work, however, is that Rudder was successful primarily because of his character and leadership style. Much of the study was drawn from primary sources. Secondary sources were also consulted. This thesis opens with a brief Introduction, which discusses the need for this work. Chapter 1 discusses Rudder's life prior to WW II, emphasizing particular characteristics that benefited his leadership ability. Chapter 2 examines the 2nd Ranger Battalion's transformation under Rudder's leadership and guidance. Chapter 3 chronicles the 2nd Ranger Battalion's assault on the Pointe du Hoc battery, ending in December 1944, when Col. Rudder was reassigned to the 109th Infantry Regiment. Moreover, the controversy surrounding the Ranger's mission is also examined in this chapter. Chapter 4 describes Col. Rudder's leadership with the 109th in the Battle of the Bulge. A chapter accounting Rudder's political career and leadership follows. Chapter 6 examines his term as chancellor and president of the Texas A&M University system, until his death in 1970, and the major institutional changes that he enacted during his tenure, which resulted in A&M becoming the respected research university it is today. This significance and recapitulation of Rudder's life and leadership will follow in the Conclusion.

Abstract:
This is a quantitative study which explores the use of Lesson Plans (LPs) in Afghan primary schools. The main objectives of this study were to find out the implementation method of LPs, reasons of applying LPs and teachers’ views on LPs. This study was conducted in three districts (Shekh Ali, Siah Gerd and Shinwari) and Charikar city of Parwan Province and data was collected by questionnaires filled in by 200 language and math teachers (100 male and 100 female). The main findings of the research show that all teachers regardless of sex, education level and teaching experiences claimed that they used LPs in their teaching. A majority of teachers, regardless of sex, education background and years of teaching experience elaborated LPs of their own and did not use the format instructed by Teacher Training Colleges (TTC). Most teachers prepared their LPs one day before and at home. To consider the importance of LP stages the findings show that the majority of both male and female teachers responded to all stages. Through a short glance on reasons of applying LPs we see that 50% of both male and female teachers used LPs to achieve the goal. More experienced teachers didn’t use LPs because of having enough experiences. Important parts of LPs include motivation of students and student activities. The study found that teachers often motivated their students by telling a story or poem. Group work was a common activity. One implication of this study is that the TTC should revise their teaching on LPs since hardly any teacher seems to use these formats.

Abstract:
Lesson study is known as an effective Japanese professional development approach for teachers, since 1999.After that, this approach used dramatically as a way for improving teaching and learning in classroom through many countries and by many researchers. Review the literature of lesson study show that there is one common effort between the researchers to apply this approach. That is to make local model for using this Japanese approach as a localized one to release the unavoidable challenges of applying the method of another educational culture. This paper first reviews the literature on lesson study as a way of teachers\' professional development, which has been conducted since Meiji Period in Japan and is conducting for today\'s teaching in classroom. Then it clarifies how Iranian mathematics teachers encountered with this method. Finally, the finding of this research addresses a general translated model of lesson study that is preferred to apply lesson study for Iranian culture of education.

Saad, Aslina. "A case-based system for lesson plan construction." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/8794.

Full text
Abstract:
Planning for teaching imposes a significant burden on teachers, as teachers need to prepare different lesson plans for different classes according to various constraints. Statistical evidence shows that lesson planning in the Malaysian context is done in isolation and lesson plan sharing is limited. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether a case-based system can reduce the time teachers spend on constructing lesson plans. A case-based system was designed SmartLP. In this system, a case consists of a problem description and solution pair and an attributevalue representation for the case is used. SmartLP is a synthesis type of CBR system which attempts to create a new solution by combining parts of previous solutions in the adaptation. Five activities in the CBR cycle retrieve, reuse, revise, review and retain are created via three types of design: application, architectural and user interface. The inputs are the requirements and constraints of the curriculum and the student facilities available, and the output is the solution, i.e. appropriate elements of a lesson plan. The retrieval module consists of five types of search advanced search, hierarchical, Boolean, basic and browsing. Solving a problem in this system involves obtaining a problem description, measuring the similarity of the current problem to previous problems stored in a database, retrieving one or more similar cases and attempting to reuse the solution of the retrieved cases, possibly after adaptation. Case adaptation for multiple lesson plans helps teachers to customise the retrieved plan to suit their constraints. This is followed by case revision, which allows users to access and revise their constructed lesson plans in the system. Validation mechanisms, through case verification, ensure that the retained cases are of quality. A formative study was conducted to investigate the effects of SmartLP on performance. The study revealed that all the lesson plans constructed with SmartLP assistance took significantly less time than the control lesson plans constructed without SmartLP assistance, although they might have access to computers and other tools. No significant difference in writing quality, measured by a scoring system, was noticed for the control group, who constructed lesson plans on the same tasks without receiving any assistance. The limitations of SmartLP are indicated and the focus of further research is proposed. Abstract:

With a growing population of English Language Learners in our schools, their specialized classroom needs must be addressed. California state testing shows that English Language Learners (ELL) consistently perform below proficiency as compared to other students who are not English Language Learners. Many times, in response to pressure placed by the state testing requirements, administrators and educators focus on English Language development strategies at the cost of other content areas such as science. The Science and English Learning Development Blended Program is a professional development project that combines English Language Development (ELD) strategies within science lesson plans to address the language needs of English Language Learners through science content. The Blended Program was in place for four years in an urban school district in southern California. During its initial year of implementation, a research study focused on the types of changes teachers made to their science lesson plans as a result of their professional development: all of the changes made had to do with English Language Development and not Science. Implications of this study suggest that at the start of the program changes to support science content were not made because the teachers did not have the science knowledge to be comfortable enough to make changes to address the science portion of the lesson. The data analyzed for this study was collected during the Blended Program's third and fourth year of implementation. The findings show changes which reflect the following themes: science concept acquisition, oral language development, and scaffolding instruction. These themes reflect changes . that address both English Language Development and science. The individuals involved with the Blended Program have now had training for ELD and Science content for three or four years. Results suggest that the training not only equipped the teachers with English Language Development strategies but has also improved teachers science content knowledge and as a result teachers are better equipped to address the science in the lesson.

Wright, Victoria Louise. "An autoethnographic account of giving lesson observation feedback." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2016. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6430/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis asks: what can an autoethnographic approach to research reveal about the relations between power, subject (s) and truth in the context of lesson observation feedback? As a Foucauldian inspired study, the thesis shows how experiences of giving and receiving lesson observation feedback reflect forms of knowledge and ways of being and behaving. The research engages with ongoing debates around the use of lesson observation as a tool to measure the performance of established teachers and as an approach to inform the development of student teachers. The thesis exemplifies a critical and ethically informed approach to a particular encounter: giving observation feedback. The selection, positioning and crafting of autoethnographies and the inclusion of empirical data leads to a reading experience that is continuous and discontinuous. Both the writing and the content of the thesis privilege the place of messy and subjective teacher experience in educational research. This is important as a deliberate stand that resists classification as to what kinds of encounters should be judged more meaningful. It promotes ways of drawing on a range of experiences that both student teachers and established teachers might employ in order to consider an aspect of their work more fully.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The following study investigates teachers’ perception of extramural English (EE) activities as an in-class learning material connected to pupils’ motivation to speak English. We have witnessed during our teacher training program pupils being reluctant towards English speaking activities in school. Consequently, we questioned the use of textbooks as a basis for learning material rather than incorporating pupils’ EE activities they engage in on a voluntary basis into the classroom. Therefore, with this study, we examined two teachers that incorporate EE as a learning material within an English as a foreign language classroom. The results show that an EE teaching practice is likely to endorse pupils’ motivation to speak English, their linguistic confidence, as well as lower speaking anxiety. The results also highlight a teaching concept grounded on familiar contexts to the pupils, but not always involving their EE activities. Therefore, a fusion between EE and areas familiar to the pupils’ resulted in EE as In- Class Activities (EE-ICA) classifications. From these results, EE-ICA could be divided into four categories: Primary EE-ICA, Secondary EE-ICA, Tertiary and non-EE. However, the result imply that lesson tasks based entirely on EE activities may be difficult to achieve and not beneficial for all pupils. Nonetheless, lesson content that involves EE activities the pupils can relate to could be a well-functioning base for increasing pupils’ motivation to speak.

Mynott, John Paul. "A primary head teacher's exploration of lesson study." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/18330.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of a head teacher's experience of Lesson Study. It aims to consider how Lesson Study develops teacher learning through consideration of collaboration, expertise and professional conflict. The methodology embraces the lived experience of introducing a collaborative method of teacher development, Lesson Study into a primary school and exploring its impact. The research is conducted through an exploratory layered method, considering the Lesson Study teams, the whole school and the head teacher's thoughts and reflections on and about Lesson Study. The exploration in this thesis found that Lesson Study is far from breath-takingly simple (Dudley, 2013) and that there are many complexities and variables within each Lesson Study group that need to be considered carefully in order to enhance any opportunity for teacher learning. This thesis describes how these different elements, collaboration, expertise and professional conflict, interacted in two different Lesson Study teams. These findings, are presented alongside the head teacher's reflections. Building on these reflections the thesis starts to articulate how Lesson Study could offer teacher learning opportunities and which elements of school culture, teacher expertise and understanding would need to be developed, honed and considered in order to create an outcome which results in teacher learning. This research provides an exploration how teacher learning may be generated through Lesson Study work. It extends the current literature on teacher learning in Lesson Study by identifying and exploring professional conflict alongside collaboration and expertise. Teacher learning opportunities are not simply created in the context the research took place. It concludes that while teacher learning can be generated through Lesson Study; the conditions and culture of a setting, alongside the skills, knowledge and expertise of the teachers involved in each team are also crucial.

To reach their objectives, the employees innovate through their initiatives, an act called corporate entrepreneurship. There are many ways that corporates can have an entrepreneurial behaviour, such as through the acquisition of another company. When acquiring a different company, a corporation has as its motivation the desire of some new attributes that either complement or will be part of their indicial objectives. After the acquisition, the integration process between the two (or more) partners is often complicated and painful. The aim of this study is to identify; what are the buying motivations, the problems encountered during the merging process of merge between the partners, and the lessons learned by big/medium corporations when acquiring a Start-up. There is a vast amount of literature concerning the acquisition by big corporations but, when talking about the acquisition of start-ups, one discovers an unexplored gap due to a lack of literature on this subject. The results of this study have been collected through in-depth interviews with employees and entrepreneurs that have taken part in the entire process of acquisition of SAMURAI by Momentum and of Save-me by Buscapé. The results are six suggestions of topics that should be taken into consideration by big/medium corporations when taking the decision of acquiring a start-up: (i) The client base of the acquired company should be previously considered; (ii) a closer contact between the management of both companies before the acquisition is crucial; (iii) hiring a consultancy company to advise during the merge process can be primordial; (iv) the entrepreneur has a central importance for the future of the merged firm; (v) the integration mode has to be carefully choice having the (iv) creation of a corporate venture as a great choice to be consider.
