The primary purpose of the study was to investigate whether takeover markets are allocationally efficient using Tobin's q as the variable which summarizes the investment opportunities of firms. Chapter I presented the purposes, hypotheses, methodology, and limitations of the study. Previous literature has stated that few mergers are successful and many fail to meet the set expectations. This study aims to compare cross-border mergers, between corporations from Sweden and from the United States of America, with in-border mergers between Swedish corporations to explore possible differences in synergy gains. The synergy gains are proxied by abnormal returns 80 trading-days post the merger completion date. The study covers the period from December, 2001, to November, 2010 (a total of 108 months), for which 3 sub-periods (Dec. 2001 to Dec. 2005, Jan. 2006 to Nov. 2010, Dec. 2001 to Nov. 2010) are separated and the related factors are investigated. The empirical findings show that, during the second study period the FHC operate more efficient than the non-FHC.
