Abstract:
Purpose – The FNEGE and then EFMD have been interested in defining a methodology that would make it possible to highlight the impact of a business school on its home territory. This has led to the development of the “Business School Impact System” (BSIS), which is introduced in this paper. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is structured as follows. The authors first present the methodological issues of the work that led us to develop the “BSIS” (EFMD, 2014). In a second section, the authors present BSIS in more detail. Findings – Based on the exploratory interviews and the literature review, the authors could first identify three main categories of impact: the financial impact; the impact on the regional community; and the impact on attractiveness and image. Originality/value – The first benefit of BSIS is linked to the creation of an information system on impact. Second, the BSIS process increases the awareness inside the business school regarding the significance of this issue. Third, the authors observe that for numerous members of the business school the question of the impact of their activity gives them a better image of their job, of what they are doing and why they are doing it. Fourth, the BSIS report constitutes a powerful tool for communication with the stakeholders. The final benefit lies in the reviewers’ recommendations on how to improve the impact of the business school.

Abstract:
1. Delay-tuned combination-sensitive neurons (FM-FM neurons) have been discovered in the dorsal and medial divisions of the medial geniculate body (MGB) of the mustached bat (Pteronotus parnellii). In this paper we present evidence for a thalamic origin for FM-FM neurons. Our examination of the response properties of FM-FM neurons indicates that the neural mechanism of delay-tuning depends on coincidence detection and involves an interaction between neural inhibition and excitation. 2. The biosonar pulse (P) and its echo (E) produced and heard by the mustached bat consist of four harmonics; each harmonic contains a constant frequency (CF) component and a frequency modulated (FM) component. Thus the pulse-echo pair contains eight CF components (PCF1-4, ECF1-4) and eight FM components (PFM1-4, EFM1-4). The stimuli used in this study consisted of CF, FM, and CF-FM sounds: paired CF-FM sounds were used to simulate any two harmonics of pulse-echo pairs. The responses of FM-FM neurons in the MGB were recorded extracellularly. We found that FM-FM neurons respond poorly or not at all to single sounds, respond strongly to paired sounds, and are tuned to the frequency and amplitude of each sound of the pair and to the time interval separating them (simulated echo delay). 3. All FM-FM neurons are facilitated by paired FM sounds and most are facilitated by paired CF sounds. Best facilitative frequencies measured with paired CF sounds fall outside the frequency ranges of the CF components of biosonar signals, whereas best facilitative frequencies measured with paired FM sounds fall within the frequency ranges of the FM components of biosonar signals. Thus FM-FM neurons are expected to respond selectively to combinations of FM components in biosonar signals. The FM components of pulse-echo pairs essential to facilitate FM-FM neurons are the FM component of the fundamental of the pulse (PFM1) in combination with the FM component of the second, third, or fourth harmonic of an echo (EFM2, EFM3, EFM4; collectively, EFMn). 4. The frequency combinations to which FM-FM neurons are tuned reflect small deviations from the harmonic relationship such as occurs in combinations of FM components from pulses and Doppler-shifted echoes. Compared with CF/CF neurons, however, FM-FM neurons are broadly tuned to stimulus frequency. Thus FM-FM neurons are Doppler-shift tolerant and relatively unspecialized for processing velocity information in the frequency domain.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract:
Methylation of various components of the translational machinery has been shown to globally affect protein synthesis. Little is currently known about the role of lysine methylation on elongation factors. Here we show that in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the product of the EFM3/YJR129C gene is responsible for the trimethylation of lysine 509 on elongation factor 2. Deletion of EFM3 or of the previously described EFM2 increases sensitivity to antibiotics that target translation and decreases translational fidelity. Furthermore, the amino acid sequences of Efm3 and Efm2, as well as their respective methylation sites on EF2, are conserved in other eukaryotes. These results suggest the importance of lysine methylation modification of EF2 in fine tuning the translational apparatus.

Abstract:
Electrospun fiber mats (EFMs) are highly versatile biomaterials used in a myriad of biomedical applications. Whereas some facets of EFMs are well studied and can be highly tuned (e.g., pore size, fiber diameter, etc.), other features are under characterized. For example, although substrate mechanics have been explored by several groups, most studies rely on Young’s modulus alone as a characterization variable. The influence of fiber mat thickness and the effect of supports are variables that are often not considered when evaluating cell-mechanical response. To assay the role of these features in EFM scaffold design and to improve understanding of scaffold mechanical properties, we designed EFM scaffolds with varying thickness (50–200 µm) and supporting methodologies. EFM scaffolds were comprised of polycaprolactone and were either electrospun directly onto a support, suspended across an annulus (3 or 10 mm inner diameter), or “tension-released” and then suspended across an annulus. Then, single cell spreading (i.e., Feret diameter) was measured in the presence of these different features. Cells were sensitive to EFM thickness and suspended gap diameter. Overall, cell spreading was greatest for 50 µm thick EFMs suspended over a 3 mm gap, which was the smallest thickness and gap investigated. These results are counterintuitive to conventional understanding in mechanobiology, which suggests that stiffer materials, such as thicker, supported EFMs, should elicit greater cell polarization. Additional experiments with 50 µm thick EFMs on polystyrene and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) supports demonstrated that cells can “feel” the support underlying the EFM if it is rigid, similar to previous results in hydrogels. These results also suggest that EFM curvature may play a role in cell response, separate from Young’s modulus, possibly because of internal tension generated. These parameters are not often considered in EFM design and could improve scaffold performance and ultimately patient outcomes.

Abstract:
Elementary Flux Modes (EFMs) are a tool for constraint-based modeling and metabolic network analysis. However, systematic and automated visualization of EFMs, capable of integrating various data types is still a challenge. In this study, we developed an extension for the widely adopted COBRA Toolbox, EFMviz, for analysis and graphical visualization of EFMs as networks of reactions, metabolites and genes. The analysis workflow offers a platform for EFM visualization to improve EFM interpretability by connecting COBRA toolbox with the network analysis and visualization software Cytoscape. The biological applicability of EFMviz is demonstrated in two use cases on medium (Escherichia coli, iAF1260) and large (human, Recon 2.2) genome-scale metabolic models. EFMviz is open-source and integrated into COBRA Toolbox. The analysis workflows used for the two use cases are detailed in the two tutorials provided with EFMviz along with the data used in this study.

Abstract:
The relevance of this study is due to the fact that in conditions of a limited budget, companies face important questions: what system to choose to support their HR cycle; to stop at a boxed solution or to develop their own; how to correctly calculate the costs of implementation and support of the system. Misunderstandings between technology platform developers and consumers may be hidden in the terminology used. When a decision-maker is looking for a system for storing educational content, the choice may not be the most optimal option, but the option that is most popular or has the widest functionality. The article presents the key trends and directions, technologies and solutions that are in the focus of corporate training; identifies the key technological platforms of e-learning in the human capital management system. The empirical basis of the study was the materials of the international consulting companies EFMD, ELearning Inside, Technavio, Metaari. The practical significance of this study lies in revealing the issues that companies face when choosing or creating their training system. The introduction of e-learning technological platforms in the human capital management system will not be easy in any case, but already at the beginning of this path it is necessary to keep the end user in mind.

Abstract:
The relevance of the research is due to the fact that the educational environment of the university is an integral element of the educational process, which is constantly changing, even at a fairly high speed. In this regard, pedagogical design in such conditions concerns not only educational programs, but also the environment itself. The author considers a new category «pedagogical design», defines how the pedagogical designer differs from the methodologist or methodologist; Why is a pedagogical design design mechanism needed? The empirical basis of the study was the data of international studies by Deloitte «Digital Education Survey», Goldman, EFMD, Metaari, Technavio, as well as data from domestic studies by HR-academy and the Sberbank Corporate University. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that the author presents a mechanism for designing the pedagogical design of the educational environment of the university, based on obtaining, comprehending, checking one’s own experience and analyzing best practices. The practical significance of the study lies in the fact that the results obtained will allow educational institutions to structure their work in such a way as to calmly relate to changes, responding to requests from the labor market, while making changes made the training solution the most effective.

Hodge, Toni Ann. "Accreditation of Business Schools: An Explanatory Multiple-Case Study of their Motivations." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Management, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/3755.

Full text
Abstract:
The commitment required of a university or business school to gain international accreditation is significant, both in dollar terms and staff time. This thesis seeks to explain the motivations for business schools to seek accreditation with three major accrediting bodies, AACSB International, EFMD and AMBA, using a multiple-case study methodology underpinned by the frameworks of institutional isomorphism, bandwagon pressures and information asymmetry. Interviews were carried out with 17 business school deans; five deans of accredited schools in Europe, five deans of accredited schools in the United States of America and seven business school deans in New Zealand. All the New Zealand schools were either accredited, formally in the process of seeking accreditation or about to enter the application stage. The results provide supporting evidence for the notion that business schools are seeking accreditation in order to achieve legitimacy benefits rather than performance benefits, and that intangible benefits are seen as having more importance than the costs involved with achieving accreditation. It was also found that where the focus is at an international level, accreditation is found to be underpinned by information asymmetries whereby schools are seeking to gain legitimacy by providing signals to the market regarding their quality. At a regional or national level information regarding quality is more well known and, instead, isomorphic and bandwagon pressures become evident as the pathway towards legitimacy. This study will be of value to business school deans in understanding the forces they are being subjected to when considering the value of seeking international accreditation. The results provide an understanding of why, in the absence of a formal business case, a school may consider such a move, or may have entered the process without the hard data that identifies the costs and estimates the benefits in a measurable way. In this regard it will also be of value to all staff of business schools, and of the wider organisation, to understand the phenomenon that is accreditation.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses a variety of techniques based on the atomic force microscope (AFM), and their application to the GaN materials system. In particular, the local conductivity and contact potential of surfaces have been measured using the techniques of Conductive AFM (CAFM) and Surface Potential Electric Force Microscopy (SPEFM), respectively. CAFM studies of GaN surfaces have revealed that prismatic planes around islands and pits on surfaces can lead to enhanced conductivity, which may be related to leakage problems in device applications. With regard to SP-EFM work, the change in surface potential associated with inversion domains on Ga-polar GaN has been imaged, yielding voltage differences up to 90 mV. Given that such inversion domains increase carrier scattering and can degrade device performance, their identification using this technique is important. SP-EFM has also been used to map the local surface potential in the active region of Modulation Doped Field Effect Transistors (MODFET's). This is the first step in a proposed study to investigate the effects of current lag in such devices.

Abstract:

In order to improve the drainage conditions of the several streams located in the Alqueva Multipurpose project, rehabilitation interventions (such as cleaning and reprofiling) are implemented. Little is known about the ecology of this streams, specially the analysis between these interventions' impact and vegetation recovery. Considering the legal requirements of Water Framework Directive, stream rehabilitation effects and overall effectiveness were assessed, and ecological deviations were analyzed between natural and agricultural streams (intervened and not intervened ones). Two types of streams were taken into account, small and large, so as to allow cause-effect relationships. To assess ecological functioning before and after interventions, and also to identify restoration standards between natural and agricultural streams, measurements expressed as categorized variables were performed, as well as statistical tests based on vegetation structure, riparian disturbance and morphological structure variables. The obtained results demonstrated that there are affections in both ecological structure and evolution after small stream reprofiling, as well as small deviations between not intervened and intervened streams and large deviations between agricultural and natural ones. Rehabilitation recommendations for future drainage regarding intervened streams are proposed.

Abstract : Digital Tax Bookkeeping (EFD) is the new tax obligation established in Brazil, by the Ministry of Finance, through the public Digital Bookkeeping System (SPED), which companies must inform to the public agencies all inventory information, movements and inventories related to raw material and finished product, as well as presenting the bill of materials, to be used in the production of finished products. This means all production operations that influence the composition of the tax basis and the amount due to the Income Tax (IRPJ) and Social Contribution on Net Income (CSLL). The initiative presents a great opportunity for companies to share with governments the indicators of eco-efficiency, using the same resources and processes of engineering, production, planning and control and information technology, needed to meet the tax requirements. This study aims to develop a proposal for environmental risk assessment and designate indicators for analysis of environmental performance in the private sector, based on the concept of eco-efficiency and industrial ecology, to generate environmental reports of companies and disclosure to government agencies using the same flow of information adopted on this new tax obligation. This information enables the State to exercise, according to the law, the supervisory functions, encouragement and planning activities in order to ensure the interests and well-being of present and future generations.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the housing and service needs of the poor (slum dwellers) in Bombay and how they are articulated and satisfied. It discusses how the poor perceive the constraints on slum servicing and improvement, their involvement in community organizations, and the role the community and its leaders play in influencing state action. Since housing and servicing issues directly impinge on the interests of politicians and bureaucrats as well as on those of the poor, patterns of provision mirror closely the nature of the relationship between the poor and how political and administrative power operates at various levels. Chapter 1 provides the research aims and objectives while Chapter 2 reviews the literature on community participation. Chapter 3 on Bombay places housing development in context and also serves as background study to the thesis. This research studies three different slum settlements housing migrants to Bombay. Two surveys of these three slum settlements were carried out, involving interviews with 135 households. Chapter 4 describes the characteristics of these households, while chapters 5, 6, and 7 give the arguments of the thesis. It is shown that, despite an established system of representative community organisations and a pro-participation rhetoric in bureaucratic discourse, most slum dwellers are excluded from participating in decision-making. A patron-client relationship exists between politicians, bureaucrats and community leaders, both in determining the community leaders' power as well as the level of services and physical benefits that he/she could win for the slum community. Leaders are generally better educated, better employed, more prosperous and highly motivated than most of their community. The NGO in this study has acted mainly as intermediary between the government and the slum-dwellers.

Carbon-based structures have played a major role in scientific and technological fields. This is due to the versatility of the element carbon, the pillar of organic chemistry, which can form a variety of structures (about 10 million compounds), besides being a basic constituent of all known life forms. Depending on the conditions, this phenomenal element can occur in several allotropic forms: from an extremely brittle material, such as graphite, so incredibly resistant materials such as diamond, carbon nanotubes and graphene. These graphitic materials have been studied extensively, and present unique properties and great potential for technological applications. Among these materials, graphene currently occupies the most prominent position by having special electronic and mechanical properties. The graphene oxide is a class of graphitic structure consisting essentially of a graphene layer decorated with epoxide and hydroxyl groups on the surface and carboxyl and carbonyl groups on the edges. Its stoichiometry depends strongly on the method of production. In addition the graphene oxide is one of the main routes for obtaining large-scale graphene also it has several interesting properties, which allow, for example, biological applications, since their functional groups make it very reactive, besides being easily dispersed in water. Many issues related to graphene oxide are yet unclear, as also its structure, training procedure and mechanisms of interaction. Thus, the electric force microscopy (EFM) was used as the main tool to study electrostatic properties of a graphene oxide sample obtained by a modified Hummer method. By means of a simplified model, it was possible to develop a method for the analysis of the EFM measurements and so determine the presence and the sign of the net charge of the sample. Furthermore it is possible to clarify the origin of the edge phenomenon observed in EFM experiments.

Abstract:
Abstract With the ever-increasing density and performance of integrated circuits, non-invasive, accurate, and high spatial and temporal resolution electric signal measurement instruments hold the key to performing successful diagnostics and failure analysis. Sampled electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) has the potential for such applications. It provides a noninvasive approach to measuring high frequency internal integrated circuit signals. Previous EFMs operate using a repetitive single-pulse sampling approach and are inherently subject to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) problems when test pattern duty cycle times become large. In this paper we present an innovative technique that uses groups of pulses to improve the SNR of sampled EFM systems. The approach can easily provide more than an order-ofmagnitude improvement to the SNR. The details of the approach are presented.

Abstract:
Externally-fired microturbines (EFMT) yield promising performance in small-scale utilization of biofuels. As in larger gas turbines, the part-load performance of the EFMT is very sensitive to the selected power control method, and in general subject to severe degradation at part load. The control parameters typically include the maximum combustion gas temperature or turbine inlet temperature and the speed of the shaft. At the design point, power generation efficiency can be increased by allowing a fraction of air to bypass the burner and the combustion gas – air heat exchanger. At the same time the heat exchanger size is increased. Therefore, the by-pass flow affects the optimal sizing of the EFMT as well. In this paper, the effect of by-pass flow on the part-load performance of a single-shaft EFMT in combined heat and power generation is analyzed. In the application, the microturbine is operated by the heat demand. The control methods incorporate the use of the maximum combustion gas temperature, the speed of the shaft, and the amount of by-pass air. The focus of the study is to determine the economically optimal control scheme for the engine. The economy model uses the profit flow from the EFMT as a criterion. The results show that the inclusion of the by-pass variation in the control methods can improve the economy of temperature-controlled EFMT at part load but has no benefits when using speed control.

Abstract:
The nature of manufacturing is using information to control energy field in order to convert material into useful configurations, products, and systems. One way to view manufacturing differently is to explore it from the perspective of energy fields. In this paper, the origination and the evolution of Energy Field Manufacturing (EFM) and the concept of a dynamic M-PIE (Material-Process-Information-Energy) model of manufacturing are reviewed. The generality of energy fields and the importance of re-thinking of traditional and non-traditional manufacturing are discussed. Giving a general definition to intelligence, this paper further broadens the methodology of EFM to Intelligent EFM, which incorporates the ability to gather, interpret and use the information in energy fields, materials and systems in a systematic way. This paper further discusses the meaning and tasks of Intelligent EFM research. A systematic approach of energy field integration and optimization is proposed. Finally, representative processes are reviewed to highlight some principles of Intelligent EFM.

Abstract:
Biofuels have a vital role in emerging distributed energy systems. Special interest is focused on heat engines that can utilize biomass by direct combustion, such as externally-fired microturbines (EFMT). This paper considers a case where a natural gas-fired microturbine is converted into an EFMT. In the application the combustion chamber is replaced by a metallic heat exchanger retrofitted into a large biomass-fueled hot water boiler. The hot air that leaves the microturbine is directed into the furnace as preheated combustion air. In the paper, techno-economical optimization is performed for the selected heat exchanger configuration. The optimization is based on maximizing the net present value of the investment. The optimum depends on the cost of the new components and the resulting effect on the overall plant performance. The results show that the energy prices have only a mild impact on the optimum dimensions, although the feasibility of the investment itself depends strongly on the economy parameters. Using the optimized heat exchanger, the performance of the EFMT is predicted under part-load conditions of the boiler.

Full text
Abstract:
The CAP1400 reactor internal is going to use a new component termed the “Even Flow Distributor (EFD)”, instead of the existing flow skirt (FS) design, to help distribute the incoming flow more evenly to the fuel assemblies. To verify the effect of the EFD, a scale model of the reactor and internals was built and hydraulic tests of both the EFD and the FS configurations were conducted. In addition, numerical simulations of the flow fields, using CFD, of both designs were also carried out. From the scale model test results, the overall flow distribution of EFD is better than that of the FS. The core inlet flow distribution taken from the CFD results is slightly better than that from the hydraulic test. The differences between CFD result and test results are less than 3 percent for the most of fuel assemblies, and about 5 percent for a few assemblies. Based on this study, it is concluded that the EFD is a very effective means of controlling core inlet flow distribution in a CAP1400 reactor.

Abstract:
Development, implementation, and evaluation are described of hands-on student experience with complementary CFD educational interface and EFD and uncertainty analysis (UA) for introductory fluid mechanics course and laboratory at The University of Iowa, as part of a three-year National Science Foundation sponsored Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement - Educational Materials Development project. The CFD educational interface is developed in collaboration with faculty partners from Iowa State, Cornell and Howard universities along with industrial partner FLUENT Inc. and designed to teach CFD methodology and procedures through interactive implementation that automates the “CFD process” following a step-by-step approach. Predefined active options for students’ exercises use a hierarchical system both for introductory and advanced levels and encourages individual investigation and learning. Ideally, transition for students would be easy from advanced level to using FLUENT or other industrial CFD code directly. Generalizations of CFD templates for pipe, nozzle, and airfoil flows facilitate their use at different universities with different applications, conditions, and exercise notes. Complementary EFD laboratories are also developed. Classroom and pre-lab lectures and laboratories teach students EFD methodology and UA procedures following a step-by-step approach, which mirrors the “real-life” EFD process. Students use tabletop and modern facilities such as pipe stands and wind tunnels and modern measurement systems, including pressure transducers, pitot probes, load cells, and computer data acquisition systems (Labview) and data reduction. Students implement EFD UA and use EFD data for validation of CFD and AFD results. Students analyze and relate EFD results to fluid physics and classroom lectures. The laboratories constitute 1 credit hour of a four credit hour 1 semester course and include tabletop kinematic viscosity experiment focusing on UA procedures and pipe and airfoil experiments focusing on complementary EFD and CFD for the same geometries and conditions. The evaluation and research plan (created in collaboration with a third party program evaluation center at the University of Iowa), focuses on exact descriptions of the implementations, especially as experienced by the students. Also discussed are conclusions and future work.

Protocol for Monitoring Fish Communities in Small Streams in the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network. National Park Service, April 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2284726.

Full text
Abstract:
Fish communities are an important component of aquatic systems and are good bioindicators of ecosystem health. Land use changes in the Midwest have caused sedimentation, erosion, and nutrient loading that degrades and fragments habitat and impairs water quality. Because most small wadeable streams in the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network (HTLN) have a relatively small area of their watersheds located within park boundaries, these streams are at risk of degradation due to adjacent land use practices and other anthropogenic disturbances. Shifts in the physical and chemical properties of aquatic systems have a dramatic effect on the biotic community. The federally endangered Topeka shiner (Notropis topeka) and other native fishes have declined in population size due to habitat degradation and fragmentation in Midwest streams. By protecting portions of streams on publicly owned lands, national parks may offer refuges for threatened or endangered species and species of conservation concern, as well as other native species. This protocol describes the background, history, justification, methodology, data analysis and data management for long-term fish community monitoring of wadeable streams within nine HTLN parks: Effigy Mounds National Monument (EFMO), George Washington Carver National Monument (GWCA), Herbert Hoover National Historic Site (HEHO), Homestead National Monument of America (HOME), Hot Springs National Park (HOSP), Pea Ridge National Military Park (PERI), Pipestone National Monument (PIPE), Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve (TAPR), and Wilson's Creek national Battlefield (WICR). The objectives of this protocol are to determine the status and long-term trends in fish richness, diversity, abundance, and community composition in small wadeable streams within these nine parks and correlate the long-term community data to overall water quality and habitat condition (DeBacker et al. 2005).
